    the lesson I see here is that he loves what he's doing, even when talking basic theory to these beginners. i've seen this with other masters as well, in music and other arts. when even the beginning is still fresh for them, it never gets old and there is always something new to learn. reminds me of zen koan... "in the beginner's mind, there are many possibilities, in the expert's there are few."

      When he was demonstrating the phrygian dominant (5th mode of the harmonic minor scale, that is, a minor scale with a sharp 7th.) scale? It does have an eastern vibe to it. It's a combination of the dominant 7th, major 3rd and flat 2nd that give it 1: a "bluesy" sound (from the dominant), 2: an eerie sound from the flat 2nd, 3: a happy sound from the major 3rd. Put them together and you get that beautifully eerie, suspiciously happy scale which is used so much, from metal to pink floyd to classical.

    If you’ve studied theory he’s not saying anything that you haven’t learned already. But what he is doing is describing it in a way, and brilliantly I might add, that makes it all make sense. It’s a great way of thinking about it all. The colors and flavors of intervals.

    Jeez - you've got one of the best guitarists in the world explaining the most important facet of music and there's a load of ars*eholes noodling in the background. What's the best thing they expected to happen? For Guthrie to stop and say "Wow, play that again! That's brilliant! You're ace! Lets start a band together, I sure could learn a lot from you!" *Shameless name-drop coming up...* When I had a lesson with Paul Gilbert, I forgot I was even holding a guitar.

      Guthrie can give you spots of advice here and there, especially in his downloadable Jamtracks transcriptions and commentary, but you need to practice and learn. Bit of advice, avoid the youtube community when learning guitar. Ego and guitar do not mix. UA-camrs, content creators and commenters, are so full of themselves that you will never learn. Find a professional like Guthrie and read. Ignore the rest.

    the numbers correspond to the notes of the scale. Instead of calling the 1st note of the C major scale a C, the 2nd note D, the 3rd E...and so on (they continue sequentially, In C Major it would be C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C). You just use numbers.
    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1
    C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C and then repeats.
    It gets more involved than this but this answers your question.
    Search for Major Scale Theory on guitar and you will find tons of help on You Tube.

    so...a very basic, 3 chord song based on the C major scale, as described by Guthrie using the 1, 3, and 5 chords would use the chords C, E, and G. Strum those for a measure each and you can hear the relationship of the chords. The sound will be sort of happy and upbeat.

  • @joesatriani1200rulez
    @joesatriani1200rulez 12 років тому

    the presence of a major 3rd and a abscence of a minor 3rd does give a major tonality, but in phrygian dominant youve got a minor 6th, and a minor 2nd, that semitone placement from the root note say E to F is complete minor, then youve got the major 3rd. So it actually indicates both minor major as it can outline an E minor as well as Major, cause Eminormajor7 works. What the fuck, phrygian dominant can be looked at many ways, but phrygian is minor scale with flat2nd, phryg dom= flat2nd, maj3rd

  • @joesatriani1200rulez
    @joesatriani1200rulez 12 років тому

    no the major 3rd dosent make it a major mode, Phrygian is a minor scale with a flat 2nd, Phrygian Dominant is a minor scale with a flat 2nd and a major 3rd, if you say phrygian dominant is a major scale then it would have to have a flat 2nd and a flat 6th, which isnt correct, its like Aeolian Dominant, Aeolian Dominant is a minor scale with a major 3rd, but even though it has a major 3rd it dosent matter the hint is in the name like aeolian and phrygian, both minor, major 3rd just adds quality

  • @joesatriani1200rulez
    @joesatriani1200rulez 12 років тому

    No its not, Phrygian is a Minor mode, Phrygian Dominant is just Phrygian with a Major3rd, although it has a resolution to a major/7th chord with its extensions its still really a Minor Mode, and the 5th mode of Harmonic Minor

      … How do you know they were men ? Even if they were they may identify as something else…

      That's called droning, you're suppose to do that when discussing the major scale so that you can hear the different modes much more clearly.
      Its a part of the lesson rofl.

      @Deathshuck 8 років тому

      azzans Being in an environment where you're constantly distracted by noise is counter-productive to when you're supposed to be learning modes and notes. The only right way to learn them is in a focused space where you can internalize all the information correctly. Taking a piece of music or scale and putting it into practice. This is a clusterfuck.

      Your are saying the really presumptuously, while I was some drawn to the lesson that could not even tell if the other guys were playing C notes or dancing macarena in the background, Lol

    Some of these comments are 14 years old. Who knew what he’d go on to achieve; playing lead with Hans Zimmer as one example. Talent shines.

    Why do they interrupt them with explanations and stuff? If you know what he's talking about, good for you. Just shut up and don't interrupt Guthrie.

    "no the major 3rd dosent make it a major mode." Wait what? The presence of a major 3rd and absence of a minor 3rd automatically indicates a predominantly major tonality, with the addition of b7 it should be noted that the Phrygian dominant scale closer resembles a mixolydian scale than a either a minor or major scale. "Phrygian Dominant is a minor scale with a flat 2nd and a major 3rd." Err, no. Its a mixolydian scale with a b2 and b13 and can be used over a 7, 7+5, or 7b9 chord. Crazy fools...

    @LukeAir2008 Um you mean Bb right? C7 is CEGBb. Making it an A# would not make it a C7 chord.
