He makes you feel on the same level with him and not feel too intimidated even though you have just walked into the same room as the greatest thing on strings.
You are missing the point of why people like him. Its not just his playin..... Its his presence. Hes such a humble, polite, intelligent person. Who in such light has done nothing his whole life but play guitar. And hes happy simply for that.
+Daniel Ferreira de Araujo That's true. PG is also an amazing teacher. While Govan teaches little nuances like getting the pitches and the sound right, Paul is awesome when it comes to rhythms and licks.
guthrie has a better understanding of music, he will turn you into virtuoso.., but paul is the guy who you want to jam with all day long, and have a happy life and also big smile every day Lol
the lesson I see here is that he loves what he's doing, even when talking basic theory to these beginners. i've seen this with other masters as well, in music and other arts. when even the beginning is still fresh for them, it never gets old and there is always something new to learn. reminds me of zen koan... "in the beginner's mind, there are many possibilities, in the expert's there are few."
I bet one day with Guthrie would provide enough knowledge that I could go the rest of my life trying to master and comprehend what was taught. Amazingly gifted educator.
yeah. if you're looking for someone of similar inspiration guthrie is a maniac. ive probably watched all his youtube videos. they are unbelievable, every genre
Mr. Guthrie, you are very kind and generous person for sharing this with us. Not many people do that despite the fact that they can or could have. Thank you very much. World need teachers like you in all the fields.
hes the best ive seen so far.. and ive seen a lot. guitar playing is like art.. there is no best. but he can do more than any other guitar player ive ever heard or seen. his overall knowledge of music, his control over the instrument, his versatility. not to mention his tech skills are unmatched. he's the best in my eyes.
What a complete legend you are (true legends are always humble and never really realise how great they are). I wish we grew up in the same street as you so we would be old friends,
Jeez - you've got one of the best guitarists in the world explaining the most important facet of music and there's a load of ars*eholes noodling in the background. What's the best thing they expected to happen? For Guthrie to stop and say "Wow, play that again! That's brilliant! You're ace! Lets start a band together, I sure could learn a lot from you!" *Shameless name-drop coming up...* When I had a lesson with Paul Gilbert, I forgot I was even holding a guitar.
If you’ve studied theory he’s not saying anything that you haven’t learned already. But what he is doing is describing it in a way, and brilliantly I might add, that makes it all make sense. It’s a great way of thinking about it all. The colors and flavors of intervals.
Just in case you're still curious, Guthrie was teaching at BIMM (Brighton Institute of Modern Music) until recently, but I've heard from someone (that was at this very clinic!) that he's ceasing teaching there as of this year. I can't say that with certainty obviously, but it was what I heard.
@satric75 Each scale has its own mood when played. That is the point of this demonstration. Notes don't work in isolation, they only have character when combined with other notes. He says himself in the video that the theory is useless in itself but only has a function to create and describe moods.
Guthrie can give you spots of advice here and there, especially in his downloadable Jamtracks transcriptions and commentary, but you need to practice and learn. Bit of advice, avoid the youtube community when learning guitar. Ego and guitar do not mix. UA-camrs, content creators and commenters, are so full of themselves that you will never learn. Find a professional like Guthrie and read. Ignore the rest.
When he was demonstrating the phrygian dominant (5th mode of the harmonic minor scale, that is, a minor scale with a sharp 7th.) scale? It does have an eastern vibe to it. It's a combination of the dominant 7th, major 3rd and flat 2nd that give it 1: a "bluesy" sound (from the dominant), 2: an eerie sound from the flat 2nd, 3: a happy sound from the major 3rd. Put them together and you get that beautifully eerie, suspiciously happy scale which is used so much, from metal to pink floyd to classical.
@Kent Horvath no I am Indian. And in my country he is given the title of mahatma which loosely translates to great man as well as Father of nation. Ignorant much?
the numbers correspond to the notes of the scale. Instead of calling the 1st note of the C major scale a C, the 2nd note D, the 3rd E...and so on (they continue sequentially, In C Major it would be C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C). You just use numbers. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C and then repeats. It gets more involved than this but this answers your question. Search for Major Scale Theory on guitar and you will find tons of help on You Tube.
The third designates whether a scale is major or minor and Phrygian Dominant has a major third. You can play the E Phrygian Dominant mode over an E major chord.
Is there a slow way to get into music theory and understanding it better? I can play guitar, but I can't read music. I just copy what other people do and sometimes improvise on it. I only know the major scale and pentatonic scale. I use them with some success, but to understand all of the neck is my goal. Knowing some small things is enough to get by as a rock/blues guitar player, but it doesn't help for other genres.
So many great guitar players, but Few just absolutely Blow-my-Mind. I think about: Alan Holdsworth, Al DiMeola, Tommy Emmanuel (to name a few) - but Guthrie is just a Freak-Show - he is so Diverse and Scary-Good. Love this guy. Phenomenal Guitar Player.
@Kaenanthebarbarian This is very very remedial music theory all below grade 5. Go and learn it :) you would be suprised at how simple it is once you get over the learning curve.
eh... i usually do thats whats funny about this.. lol but hes become my biggest influence over the past couple years.. but it happened fast. he can just do everything that everyone else i love does but A LOT more.. and his playing is always so tasty but its like the taste keeps changing. i cant get enough. he needs to make another album already. can u suggest any other guitar players to me? im always on the look out.
why does everyone hate Guthrie? saying stop worshipping an all that, he is probably alot better then most as he can play pretty much anything. but just because you like his stuff an think he is talented, doesnt suggest he is worshipped??? i like some of his stuff, some of the things he does is very very good, other stuff, i dont like, but what he is talking about in this video is very appropriate and informative. il never understand people on youtube.. chair experts. individuality people!
That's just because of the multiple notes on one string, which can in ways emulate the slide sound. Also Derek Trucks has many Eastern inspirations such as Ali Akbar Khan, U. Shrinivas, Brij Bhushan Kabra, etc. and all that major stuff he was playing is straight out of Eastern influence-esque playing.
Maybe some of them are trying to figure out what he was teaching with their own instruments lol? Is that not the point of a lesson or did I miss something in the years of learning music?
"You can't just noodle away while he's speaking to everyone with his immaculate Oxford English" If they weren't meant to play, they wouldn't have their guitars.
no the major 3rd dosent make it a major mode, Phrygian is a minor scale with a flat 2nd, Phrygian Dominant is a minor scale with a flat 2nd and a major 3rd, if you say phrygian dominant is a major scale then it would have to have a flat 2nd and a flat 6th, which isnt correct, its like Aeolian Dominant, Aeolian Dominant is a minor scale with a major 3rd, but even though it has a major 3rd it dosent matter the hint is in the name like aeolian and phrygian, both minor, major 3rd just adds quality
Don't misunderstand me, I completely agree. He is absolutely amazing but I posted my comment in response to some comments specifically referencing his technical skill. Some of the comments went on to talk about how they could never achieve such a level of technical skill but I think that with the right practice any technique is achievable by anyone.
so...a very basic, 3 chord song based on the C major scale, as described by Guthrie using the 1, 3, and 5 chords would use the chords C, E, and G. Strum those for a measure each and you can hear the relationship of the chords. The sound will be sort of happy and upbeat.
In that case, I repent, I confess - I will fast for three days and rise again on the mixolydian
@@BernieHolland-w4l 😂😂😂😂
it's more like :
people come for his playing
and stay for his personality
and also his playing
no we are not we already know that, nobody is missing any point here.
I think Guthrie should do a whole album of Indian classical music. I love it!
*Rare footage of Jesus teaching his deciples the guitar*
Demonstrating his divine powers on an instrument beautifully crafted by Joseph to a specification by the Holy Ghost, to an order by God the Father

great seeing one of your favorite guitarist enjoying the video of another favorite guitarist. :)
For real?? I would sell everything I own for a lesson with Guthrie.. So cool!!
He's a great musician and a great teacher, just like mr. Paul Gilbert. I really admire them.
+Daniel Ferreira de Araujo That's true. PG is also an amazing teacher. While Govan teaches little nuances like getting the pitches and the sound right, Paul is awesome when it comes to rhythms and licks.
Probably my top 2 favorite players and biggest influences.

He made his guitar sound like a sitar. Dudes amazing
Guthrie mixed Lydian modes and minor scales in 1:03...
what a great man he is..
thx for the video..
it really helps me expand my licks knowledge..
This guy have the fury of stevie ray vaughan, the speed of malmsteen, and the jazz fusion like allan holdsworth in his hands, guthrie is a beast
Amazing glow in his eyes when he talks about music. Really inspirational when someone loves and is being pasionate about what he loves...
Such an Indian tune there. I'm sure Guthries's been practicing some Indian Raagas back home. :)
Osho Shakti V.M bhatt is the man guthrie listens to!
+istanbul beyefendisi i'm sure he listens to all music
Osho Shakti One of the things I admire about Guthrie is his ability to feel music.
And I'm sure he did one pretty well with his fingers!
Osho Shakti ya! Those slides definitely turned the scale into our raagas 😄

I could be all day watching Guthrie playing and teaching.
I've watched my fingers learn to do some pretty amazing things over time. Muscle memory is powerful.
I agree muscle memory is a part of getting better at guitar.
This finally clicked for me a couple of weeks ago.
Hugely important.
Guthrie's way of explaining music theory is brilliantly clear.
WOW. this is Indian classical music right there! the phrasing and everything!
