    Matti, you are reviewing a budget camera but your sample footage is smooth, please share if you were handheld or using some of your professional gear to smooth out the tracking motion, ie. where the camera was moving with the subject. Please fill me in, thanks.

    Great video! but the Panasonic G7 is by far the best budget mirrorless! 4k 24fps, 1080p at 60fps and a mic input all for a similar price and often even a little cheaper! :)

    Hey man, I just wanted to thank you for your videos in general. I think you do a fantastic job and always appreciate your attitude and your down to earth outlook on life. It's easy for me to get a bit obsessed with gear, so you help me slow that down a little and think more about creativity than obsessing over gear so much. You have a beautiful family btw. I think that God is blessing you and your work. Thanks again.

      TravelFeels That would be a good one to review then for budget cameras. I simply don’t use 4k on my LUMIX G7 and find myself picking up my G7X more often than not. I just love the image Canon produces straight out of the box.

      Fathering, yup, the 200D has better AF, external mic input, and the screen flips out sideways so it is out of the way of a hotshoe mounted mic.

    Thanks for this review. Even though its nearly a year later, it served me well. I need something small and serviceable to take in my boat with me, other than a GoPro, for shooting discussion/education segments and B roll, as well as something with a microphone input. This seems like it will do the trick, and, at the current price tag, I won't feel AS upset if I manage to get it wet or damaged somehow. Thanks again Matti!

    Kinda underwhelmed by the M10. Kinda cool for it's form factor (sensor, swappable lenses etc.) but I think for an all-round vlogging camera from Canon, the G7x II is the one to go for.

    The lack of audio input is a killer for a camera like that. Good audio is so important that it would be a waste of an investment to get something that doesn’t allow you to plug a good mic into

  • @aaronfletcher9590
    @aaronfletcher9590 6 років тому +2

    Matti... ask your friend at Canon to send you the SL2. It uses EF-S and EF lens, as opposed to the EF-M mount on the mirrorless bodies. So you can take the lenses with you when you upgrade. It shoots 1080p @ 60 fps. It's small, but not as small as this one. But has a fully articulated flip out screen and a mic input. So some of the things you didn't like about this camera are resolved with the SL2. I'd love to hear your take on how it compares with the bigger more expensive cameras in Canon's lineup.

    • @lfmoliveira1
      @lfmoliveira1 6 років тому +2

      1080p is good for the next few years. But if you wanna future proof your videos, you gotta do 4K. As there is no future proofing of vlogs...

    • @Verdoux007
      @Verdoux007 6 років тому +40

      Future proofing is such a silly concept. I like how different decades have different looking footage and if the content is good, it really doesn't matter if it's super high resolution.

    I own one of these cameras and use it often currently because I’m on a long trip and couldn’t bring my 80D. There are some critical limitations to this camera. First the auto focus is slow and often takes a long time to find the focus, sometimes just failing and I have to help it by focusing manually. Secondly it’s limited to 1080p at 25 FPS (shooting in PAL). Audio is poor and you get crazy wind noise outside. There is no way to connect and external mic so I use a clip on recording to my iPhone.

      Thats awesome dude, I wouldn't say its the best budget camera for filmmaking out there, but If it works for you then that's great. I've been using the d3300 for the last year and a half and have been struggling with trying to get cinematic results. I was always getting gear lust for insane cameras like the 1DX II, and I didn't think I could get beautiful B roll without 4k or 120fps. Recently though, I've learned that its not about the camera, but the artist (and you can get great slowmo with 60fps too!). Good luck with your new rig man!

    Dude it's a great budget camera, especially when you compare it to things like the T5i or anything lower. Same sensor size, good color codec, same recording size options for 30p, 24p & 60p as the T5i. If just starting out, it's definitely a proper buy. Especially because you could save on buying this and then use the extra money for things like a zoom H1 or something for better audio. Overall, worth it if you are starting out and learning your ways around it.

    I bought the 6D2 after you said it was really good, don't worry I don't regret it and like it a lot. I don't know if you have tried it, but Canon M6 is a great little camera, it has the flip up screen, mic input and has a higher pixel count than the M10, oh and it has Dual Pixel AF!

    • @mfreeman313
      @mfreeman313 5 років тому

      @@fatheringautism I have the original EOS-M and the G7. Use the G7 as a B camera now but if I had to go back to my beginning days and choose it'd be the one. You've got the guts of a GH4 with a few extra tricks thrown in versus the guts of a Rebel. And if you know how to set it up and which lenses to use the G7 is a really solid performer. The Canon needs more help to shine, which admittedly it can do. They're both good, don't get me wrong, but for most purposes the Panny is out in front.

    Hey Matt, I just looked and I think you might have gotten the mount incorrect. The M series only take the EF-M mount not an EF-S. You have to have the adapter to mount EF-S and EF. The EF-M mount is smaller than the EF-S.

    I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the Canon M6, same form factor as the M10 but it has 1080p 60, dual pixel auto focus and a mic in jack. The only thing that turns me off about it is the flip up display vs the flip out. Canon really needs to ditch the flip up display and go with the flip out on the M line the flip out offers so many more options when it comes to viewing angles. I also wish Canon had more options in wide fast glass for the M series.

Slap a 11-22 on it and you have yourself a very nice mini vlogging camera that you can do slowmo b roll with.

I asked because my background is in fashion design/ graphics. There are a lot of trend that happens... sometimes the old comes back, a few months ago they started bringing back the Polaroid but modern... My question I guess does it also appear in film making, if people started to use film then could this happen in the video/photorgaphy world?

    You will need an external mike and recorder to record decent audio in the wind. How to fit a mic in the hotshoe and see the flip up screen ? Better off with the 200D as it has an external mic input, and the screen flips out side ways, ie, not clashing with hotshoe mounted lights or mics.

    I'll make the assumption that there was a reason behind this but it feels a little like they're forcing people who own, depend on, and respect Canon to buy an additional set of lenses.

    • @mattih
      @mattih  6 років тому +1

      Yea they are much smalller lenses so that might have to do something with it

    • @billymurphy6910
      @billymurphy6910 6 років тому

      TravelFeels they don't have much when it comes to wider aperture though. Just seems limited for higher end stuff unlike Sony's mirrorless line... ya know?
      And the adapters make the lenses massive on the mirrorless system lol

    • @genjii931
      @genjii931 6 років тому +1

      The thing about DSLR and mirrorless design is that the flange distance (the distance between the lens mount surface and the surface of the image sensor) is much larger on a DSLR (to make room for the mirror getting out of the way when taking a shot). If you were able to physically mount a DSLR lens on a mirrorless camera, the DSLR lens is designed to focus much farther back than the sensor is positioned inside a mirrorless camera, so they are physically incompatible
      This, however, is why it's possible to make adapters to put DSLR lenses on mirrorless cameras - the flange distance difference means you can fit an adapter in there to manage the physical mount difference (including electronic connections on the fancier ones) and have the image focus on the correct spot.
      It also makes focal reducers like the Metabones Speedbooster and others possible - they are adapters that convert lenses for DSLRs with larger-size sensors for use with mirrorless cameras with smaller-size sensors to focus more light onto the smaller sensor - thus gaining back a wider angle of view - and increasing maximum aperture. A very nice win!
      THe other option which no camera maker has yet done is to make a mirrorless camera that's physically just as deep as their DSLR so it has the same flange distance, and can thus use their existing lenses without an adapter. Rumor has it this *might* be Canon's wacky mirrorless plan for their upcoming full-frame mirrorless camera, but we'll see. I call this wacky because it means the camera would be unnecessarily larger.

      genjii931 Thank you! That's a very helpful description because I was looking this up and everything you mentioned at once is spread in bits and pieces all over Google lol.
      That makes sense when you describe the physical limitations in design and how to make this happen you would need a bigger body altogether eliminating one of the mirrorless systems biggest advantages of small size. 👍👍

      I did - very good value for the money. I bought a package on Amazon for about $500. Also, there are LOTS of tutorials on YT for that camera since its so popular. When I upgrade I'm going to Canon, but at the $500 price point I think its the best deal out there. Does not have an audio input, so if you're using it for blogging you'll need an external external recording device. Also, the kit lens is crap - as with all cameras at that price. Get a 50mm prime lens. I got a Nikkor manual lens for about $100 which is really cheap for the quality, which is very very good.

    Great stuff. However, you were actually wrong about the mount. Canon EF-S mounts support all EF lenses. For an example, you can mount a Canon L series EF lens on a camera with an EF-S mount. On the other way around, you can't use EF-S lenses on EF mounted cameras.

    I’m just starting out vlogging and went for a Canon G7X mk3 compact. It’s a cracking stills camera and takes great video, has the flippy up screen and a mic input. I considered the Osmo Pocket (not great for vlogging and didn’t want the bag of expensive necessary accessories) and Canon M50 (i already have a Nikon Pro SLR for stills and didn’t want a second interchangeable lens outfit). I concluded that the G7X iii is a great travel companion for stills (when I couldn’t bring my SLR) and video, especially with a Rode VideoMicro mic.

    So it's basically not a tiny cinematic beast of a camera but it's an ok vlogging camera even though the sound sucks. Nice clickbait title. This Camera is around $600. For around $400 you can get a lot more features in the Lumix gx85 which has nice colors, stabilization, 4k and changeable lenses. The 12-32 kit lens is also pretty wide. The built in mic also pickups a great deal of ambient surrounding sounds, which can desirable for travel videos. External recorder can be had for $80.
    Infact you could put together a pretty awesome kit for around $1000 with it, if you ebay
    GX85 - $350
    Phantom 3 4K - $400
    Zoom H1 - $80
    Comica shotgun or Lav - $35
    Handheld Stabalizer < $100

    Panasonic g7! The kit lens will give you a 85mm equivalent that will get you shallow depth of field. Then get one of the cheap 25mm 1.8 and you got bokeh for days. Not to mention it has a mic input, full articulating screen, great control layout and better video options (60p and 4k at 24p and 30p). Not the best for vlogging but if your trying to do more traditional narrative work it's such a good deal. And you get a really competent stills camera too.
