Making DIY Gumdrop Light Decorations With Vacuum Forming | Outdoor Christmas Decorations
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- We wanted to make Gumdrop Light Decorations for our Harbeck Lights Christmas Light Show so we did what any maker would do and build our own gumdrop vacuum forming machine, spent too much money on glitter, cracked our mold, waited for glue to dry and dry and dry, and got amazingly detailed gumdrop lights!
We show how we made our custom negative vacuum forming setup to form over 60 DIY gumdrops by vacuum forming PETG and then decorating them using copious amounts of glitter and glue! We then used color changing LED pixel strips to control the sequencing of the lights. The glitter does a beautiful job of refracting the light and details in the surface making these a great outdoor Christmas decoration idea.
We used Fusion 360 to build our 3d models and then 3d printed them out on the Prusa i3mkIII. We then used these forms as our molds/bucks for vacuum forming these translucent decorations.

Thank for the dyi information
You should sell these…. Cause I really want to buy like 10 of them lol. Even just the plastic part. I can do the glitter and lights
Does each gum drop have their own individual stop lights? Thank you.
You are our kind of people
What worked for glue? Thanks for posting!
Cool idea, took a lot of work and thought to get the final results 👍
Thank you so much! 🙂
i wish they had clear gumdrop shapes like these online. i want to make some gumdrops for christmas but i cant find anything that looks similar to this shape
How much for two?
How much do they cost for final concept
do you have the STL file to 3d print myself?
😍 I love these! What’s the glitter? It looks like it’s large scale and semi-translucent
Thank you! Yes we use a larger scale glitter that looked more chunky! Here's the link www.amazon.com/Floracraft-Color-Fill-Decorative-Accents/dp/B0072F55HE
Sell the molds please
Great job! In the first process, it might have worked to release the plastic by blowing compressed under the inner edge.
Could you share some info on the heat box component of your vacuum forming setup?
Yes for my setup I was trying to keep it as simple as possible so I just used one of those outdoor quartz heaters. I built a little box around it with mdf and then lined the inside with tin foil. The wood box never got hot at all. This setup was easy to store away and did the job well.
I’ve been looking for a good diy light up gumdrop for three years and these are the best by far! I would totally buy them from you guys. Maybe you could make a kit.
Thank you so much!! A diy kit is a great idea for an Etsy listing!
I would buy them too.....you wouldn't have to trim them either
Just buy 10" jumbo plastic eggs. Glue the middle together. Cut the bottom off flat. Use spray adhesive and dump glitter on it.
But do they light up?

@@inspirationalrelaxation6694 Yeah just buy a rgb light bulb pack for like $12 then pendent light extension cords that are for light bulbs. Or you can use RGB push lights with a controller. You can find multi packs for cheap. Use old string lights that don't work as extension cords within your lawn that go from each gumdrop.
Do you sell these if someone wants to order and buy?
Not yet, but considering how we might be able to sell in the future.
Nicely done! Love that you showed what didn't work and tried another way.
Thank you!
I’ve been seeing a lot of comments regarding you selling the molds of gumdrops, do you guys have Etsy account or have thought of selling some of your creations like these gumdrops on Etsy?
That's a good idea! Sorry we don't have an etsy account yet although we might start one soon.
@@HarbeckLights YES PLEASE. I've been looking for these all season! I'm pretty handy with DIY but not THIS awesome!
What was used to simulate the large sugar granules please? Thank you
Hello! We used these for the larger glitter www.amazon.com/Floracraft-Color-Fill-Decorative-Accents/dp/B0072F55HE
I really don't have a mold maker
What LED components did you to light up your gumdrops ? Was it the led light strips kits you see on Amazon?
Yes we just used led strip lights.
@@HarbeckLightsdo you have a link to the ones that you used?
Wow! Great work! I gave up on a Gingerbread themed yard over the gumdrops. You nailed it!
Thank you so much! Much appreciated!! You can do it too!
righhttt. its so hard to find an accurate gumdrop like shape online or in stores theres some good dome like shapes that you can cut shorter but they cost a lot of money for just one so its not worth buying them.
someone recommended chicken waterers in the comments here and even put a link to some theyre cheap and are accurate to gumdrop shapes
❤
Cool
Thanks for the video. I'm curious as to what did you do to secure the props to the base?
I used a clear outdoor silicone to seal them and attach them. This should hold good but if needed I can still remove them if needed to fix anything.
How much as I'm on tight budget but loveee lights I've tried making my own out of plastic bottles . :(
Very intrested
Very pretty!!
Soda bottles! I used soda bottles 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
Very cool looking! It will be fun to see them incorporated in your show!
Thank you! Yes looking forward to Christmas time! I like your show - lots of those big bulbs!!
@@HarbeckLights Thanks! Last year was ground zero for us and I’m still very much learning. I thought the big bulbs were pretty labor intensive until I see you guys making gumdrops from scratch!🤣. Keep up the good work!
How did you attach the LED strips inside the gumdrop?
I attached the strips using a led strip clip and some short screws
Do you by any chance sell the plastic domes? Just the clear plastic domes not decorated.
Sorry not currently selling these although we are looking at ways we could in the future possibly.
I have a brother Andy…
Balloon
Where did you get your supply for plastic and how thick was it?
I used .04” thick since the pull was pretty deep. I got the sheets from EBay
Did you DIY that vacuum mold?
Yes the shape we 3D printed and the rest of it is just a mdf box.
What did you use for the glitter?
Following
We actually used a couple types of glitter. One was called Spectra Glitter and another was a large clear plastic beads that you can find on Amazon.
@@HarbeckLights any more details on these beads? I cannot seem to locate them?
@@MelanieStine-Shannon couldn't find them again either at first. Here's the link www.amazon.com/Floracraft-Color-Fill-Decorative-Accents/dp/B0072F55HE
@@HarbeckLights awesome! Thank you so much! @Jewelsmith and I will be relieved that the search is over.
