      I recommend that you see the first season but this time looking for the mistakes, it's fun because the fights are so good at times that we forget that there are chapters that are very similar to the current season, for example in the final chapter there are parts that they are not understood and they are static images during the first seconds, but as the soundtrack plays its role well we do not notice it, try it...

If you're comparing their shorts then I'd argue they're about the same in terms of quality, though I find the expressions and linework in Looney Tunes much more compelling, seeing as they were made at the same rate. Good Animation is a huge part of why people would watch any animated art. If it doesn't look good then it doesn't attract peoples eye no matter how good it is. Perfect example being one punch man. We all know how good the story is but if the animation sucks (in comparison to the amazing animation the last season had) then it's some cheap cop out. "Does anime need good animation?"
    Short answer: Yes.
    Good animation:
    1. Fits the tone of the story being told.
    2. Logically and clearly conveys what it is attempting to show.
    3. Is aesthetically pleasing and/or interesting.
    4. Is consistent.
    I care about story far more than animation, but I'll drop anything that doesn't follow these four rules.

      You could probably say "is aesthetically pleasing" is _very_ subjective, as opposed to other more objective qualities like consistency and tone. I haven't seen OPM S2 myself yet, so I can't truly give the "eh it's actually okay" argument, but I'm getting the impression that people are shitting on it because it's not _absolutely brilliant_ anymore, and is instead just _good/alright._

      Then you’re probably missing out on a lot of good shows that had low animation budgets. There isn’t any one perfect mindset to have when going about watching anime, and ruling out a series anses on lackluster animation just seems arbitrary to me. If the writing and OST is good, poor animation can be excused. I couldn’t really say the same thing about anime with good animation and bad writing.

  • @miss_bec
    @miss_bec 5 років тому +377

    I think the reason animation quality matters, especially for OPM, is the fact that a lot of the gags from OPM are visually based. A lack of visual quality would mean reduced quality of the gags, which is what I think makes OPM more accessible for newcomers to the world of anime. I haven't watched any OPM S2 yet, so I can't comment on this and make a final opinion on it, but I'm not looking too forward to it.

      I don't understand that point of view. Do you have an example from the first season where the gag would get worse with lower quality in the animation?

  • @fuwariii
    @fuwariii 5 років тому +440

    The thing that puts me off with opm 2 is the directing rather than the animation. The first episode feels rushed.... it seems like they wanted to get to the king stuff(which is the good stuff) without them reintroducing to our main two characters. It doesn’t work in the context of the 4 years hiatus and it doesn’t work when you binged it with the way they ended season 1.

    • @EvyDevy
      @EvyDevy 5 років тому +38

    • @aster3380
      @aster3380 5 років тому +8

      @@EvyDevy Sure it might have been a good first sequel episode, but I feel like having that sort of boring reintroduction of the characters done in a comical way, easing us back into the series by having Saitama and Genos do a mundane, unhero-like task would have been more in tune to the feel of the first series, the feel of which had me watching it in the first place. Having King's story in the first episode (the setting and intro of the series) really creates a much more serious and heavy/melancholic atmosphere and story, which I personally don't appreciate. This sets up the series to be fast-paced and action driven.
      I (yes this is personal, you don't have to agree) was never invested much in the action and exactly where the characters' stories went, but the journey (the very comical twists and turns) that the characters had to navigate, as well as the maybe flexible art style/animation they had, which went from comically serious and detailed to dumb in seconds flawlessly. On the other hand, the new, polished animation makes it harder for them to have flexibility in the art for comical effect, especially if they don't have the experience for it, and the technique like they had in opm 1.

    I think the biggest issue with "bad animation" is when a show used to have MUCH better animation before so the difference in quality is just absolutely jarring. One Punch Man Season 2 is an example for that as well as the most recent Final Season of Attack on Titan.
    I really wish people would have more patience in general so that the products they love come out when they are as good as they can be. But as stated in the video companies just try to keep their brands relevant so they don't even care if the quality and creativity suffers for that.

  • @EnormousApplePie

    Actually, now that you mentioned it, Attack of Titan is still a really great example of some very nice animation and improving quality per season, rather declining quality.
    *EDIT:*
    I love the attraction that this comment has started and allow me to give some additional opinions. Story wise I haven't really felt an noticeable increase in quality. That doesn't mean it declined. In fact, the story stays strong as it always has been. Some people ridicule the attack on human part of the show, but I think it showed another great aspect of the world, that in the end we are dealing with humans after all. A government/monarchy ruling over its citizens, doing all they must to stay in power is not something you can outrule, as the show tells you. I also personally love the sound quality, it's very, very detailed and makes the world they live in so much more real than that is.

The OPM manga is already beautiful - the only reason I'd feel inclined to watch the anime is if it did something the manga couldn't do... like, say, really good animation. Season 1 of OPM did this, but since it looks like season 2 didn't, I personally don't see a point in watching it. The manga is the better medium for this, in my opinion.
      MP100 is fantastic though. The anime is soooo good.

    This is actually why I, personally speaking, prefer shows that have a simpler art style but more fluid animation, as opposed to the other way around. Don't get me wrong, epic, flashy visuals are always a treat to see. But sometimes I find less is more, and it's about what you do with what you've got that matters, as opposed to the subject (animation) itself.
    Netflix's Hilda is a show I'm semi-obsessed with and is a perfect example of simpler art styles done in a fluid, dynamic way, that enhances the story of child-like wonder and Scandinavian-style mythology. Gurren Laggan is my favourite anime of all time, partly because of its ridiculous visuals and creative giant robot designs, but more so because of its characters. The heart of Gurren Lagann is overcoming impossible odds, and facing any challenge head on, knowing you have your friends to help along the way.
    As you say, animation is only part of what can make an anime (or animation in general) good. It's absolutely possible to thrive on a combination of factors where one aspect falls short.

CGI also makes animation come out faster, and has gotten more detailed over the past 20 years. @LAOK242 5 років тому +111

    Honestly the "meh" animation was expected and it doesn't really bother me much(tho I still wish we got to see what Shingo Natsume and MadHouse could've done with it), my big issue is the pacing, wich is completely off. I went trought a couple of versions on diferent sources just to make sure that I'm not watching some speed up edit, almost everything feels rushed and most scenes don't get any room to breathe or build up.
    The best/worst example probably being Genos using Accelerate for the first time against Sonic, a monstrously badass moment of Genos declaring "You lose." was relegated to a rushed flash of a scene(tho I do agree on the sound quallty in most cases, the "boom" of Genos's movement was perfectly chosen), and overall that's what a lot of it feels like. Its like the show is just ticking of boxes on the "manga did that" list without much thought or reason behind it. They are also missing some amazing shots from the manga that matter more than I think they realize, that is especially noticible in episode's 3 fight between Garo and the tank top band, they missed or underdelivered a bunch of Garou's expressions that make him feel genuinely dangerous and terryfying or how they ditched the shot of Saitama's countless casual faced afterimages smashing past Sonic, wich was one of the funniest scenes in the series so far.
    Its still allright overall, but its really just riding on the quallity of the base material while barerly adding anything from itself. If anyone asks me, 10/10 times I'll recomend the manga over it unlike with the first season where both versions are equally worth a watch/read and stand tall on their own. Oh and one more thing, the music is horribly underwheliming, I can't recall a single theme from S2 so far, nor can I think of a scene where the music was impactfull in any meaningfull way.

JoJo is a great example of this - sure it doesn't have tons of sakuga strong but the direction for the animation especially in JoJo Part 5 is really damn strong (Episode 27,28 being great examples of this). OPM S2 could get way with the lack of sakuga if it can particularly strong direction but it feels ho-hum - like an A1 Pictures adaption.

      I honestly think this is due (at least in part) to the animation. Shortly afterwards you are presented with another tease, resetting the cycle and keeping you excited without ever actually fulfilling your expectations.

I can appreciate the strengths of a show, be critical of its shortcomings, and still thoroughly enjoy it all at the same time. To be fair, some anime are essentially audiobooks (those ones that always have people on the sidelines explaining what is happening- “Impossible! A just blocked B’s Ultimate Attack with one hand! A looks REALLY pissed. He’s glowing now, WTFFFFFFF!”). I do agree that the animation is important, but I’m more concerned with the directorial choices than the “quality” of the animation itself. A good director can find creative ways to suggest more motion than is actually happening, whereas smooth animation can only do so much to redeem a boringly-shot fight scene. Ideally we’d get both creative direction AND good animation, but I’d choose the former if I can only have one.

      As MB was getting at, there's a lot that goes into making a show enjoyable.
      Season two of OPM has ho-hum animation, at best. But even worse, it has bad direction. Voice acting is good, sound design is good, script/story is good, but with bad direction, it simply won't be exciting. (Also, bad pacing and ho-hum music)

Namely because it was the moment that cemented to me that I should never get my hopes up again for this season. I'm trying not to be cynical and admit to nit-picking a few parts, but the mental nadir has made the sakuga moments in later episodes feel far more impactful. Limited as they've been.
    What irritates me the most about season 2 isn't so much the limited animation as the fact they keep leaving stuff out that could be done in limited animation effectively. Like in the Saitama Serious Sidestep technique, they don't actually show Sonic getting hit. At all. And they remove a lot of the moments where there is a denial of buildup, like in the Genos v. Sonic fight where they remove the shot of Genos about to launch his attack into the ground as Sonic goes for the kill.

I've only just started to appreciate animation quality, and I expect it will never be anywhere near as important to me as it is to most otaku.

      Thats the thing. Whats the reason in watching anime if the ANImation isnt at least decent? Anime has to be aesthetically pleasing, in which case, the animation is important. For example, theres currently no reason to watch OPM season 2 when its a literal slideshow. You can experience the story through the superior means which is the manga or even the web novel if what you care about is the story. Murata's work conveys much more detail and motion in every panel than OPM season 2 ever will and its kinda sad

    Animation doesn't have to be perfect, but there's always a minimun threshold. If it's too bad, it can get distracting, although OPM season 2 doesn't reach those levels of terrible.

    Personally, I feel that anime that is adapted from manga without an interesting visual direction like the currently airing OPM S2 just doesn't really attract me as someone that reads the source material.
    As someone that reads the original ONE OPM series, with its distinct less that flattering artwork, I can agree with you that sometimes it is the writing and various other aspects that is more important than the visual aspect. But if it doesn't add to the original experience, like what Yusuke Murata (Fancy manga version of OPM) did with the original OPM material, then it is really hard for me to be onboard of it.
    Especially so when we got striking examples over the years of poorly adapted manga series like Berserk that I can safely say ruined the series to first-time watchers. That being said, OPM S2 is at least good enough for anime watchers, and I guess that's just simply mean it is for a different audience.
    In my opinion, a great anime adaptation should make me want to go read the original source material if I haven't done so already. Like mob psycho, kimetsu no yaiba (I literally binged it to catch up to the latest chapter in a day.) and Attack of Titan.

    I completely disagree the opening statement that animation quality =/= popularity. Violet Evergarden, SAO, AOT, MHA, OPM S1. All popular anime have good animation. Its just a fact of the medium. Even if the series is bad, if it has good animation then it will be popular. If OPM S2 had aired in a vacuum it would be getting 1/4th the views. The only reason OPM S2 is getting lots of positive ratings is because S1 already sold them on the series.

    Now I agree that a show can still be engaging with bad animation but OPM S2 is just so rushed that i can't say it is an example of that, they seem to prioritize getting to the fight scenes and race through dialogue if they don't outright cut it from the show there is no build-up to anything, no dramatic beats, the story is an inconvenience.
    The worst example of bad directing in my opinion is during the tournament when we see the support cast contestants face off against each other while Genos simultaneously deals with the monsters around City C. In the manga a parallel is clearly drawn between each fight (most of which only last a few panels) for example a fat guy body slams his opponent in the contest and then we cut to Genos using a rocket powered stomp to crush a monster. But in the anime they don't inter-cut these scenes and instead they show the fights in the contest one after another and then the Genos fights one after another... I don't know if they thought it would be confusing to do it the way the Manga spelled out but it just seems... Bad.
