I don't know, it would be very insensible in the actual political climate, since there have been a lot of terrorstic acts in the last months, where evil people drove cans into crowds .... So let's not do that.
Here's an idea for an isekai, the truck magically becomes a human after killing the main character of his own isekai and tries to fit into society to atone for his murder.
For some reason that sounds like normal isekai plot. Isekai is my favorite genre but how the isekai actually happens makes no sense 99% of the time. The 1% is just explained enough.
not anime but the greatest isekai ever in my opinion would be muv luv, a visual novel triology that I can't recommend enough. first off, no fantasy world operating on rpg logic here, it''s from high school rom-com mecha vs aliens apocalipse in a parallel world now, emphasis on parallel world since the story makes full use of it's nature as an isekai story and a visual novel setting up this multiverse theory that the main character has to solve even getting to the point of having different instances of the same person in different universes collaborate to achieve stuff or things happening in mecha world influencing how the story plays out in the original one, kind of like Steins;Gate. Also the story doesn't pull any punches, especially in the non censored version, some h scenes are your usual "gotta have some h at the end of the route" stuff but some are just too important to skip and some even hard to watch, not going to spoil stuff but both sexually and not this games know how to make their 18+ rating count, this game will make you feel the traumas of the mc by traumatizing you along with him. speaking of the Mc, he has one of the best believable character arcs in an isekai I can think of, going from asshole ecchi Mc to a good soldier and by the end a goddamn reluctant war hero. the supporting Harem is also very good, kinda tropey at the beginning but most have something behind their character archetipes and even more when you start comparing them with their alter egos from the second universe, all in all it's mostly a great story. since I have written so much about all the great stuff I feel like I should mention some that might turn you off first off, it's a long, long story, each games has hundreds of hours of content to read trough, not to mention that the first two games Extra and Unlimited are mostly an introduction to the final chapter Alternative. the first one especially takes place entirely in the normal world and the Mc is entirely static trought the whole thing, it's mostly there to introduce all the characters and getting to know them as much as possible before going over to Unlimited that thankfully was released bundled along with it. also while the first games let you get to date all the main heroines in Alternative there is only one (rather predictable) true ending, so unless your favorite happens to be her you're in bad luck. the art style is so early two thousands it hurts (those hair designs look sharp enough to cut steel) but in my opinion has aged rather well compared others and in general both character sprites and backgrounds are pleasing to look at, though not particularely special. sorry for leaving you a paragraph but I really love the thing and at this rate it looks like it will remain an hidden gem outside the V.N. comunity
Devil is a part-timer, Re:Creators is people from games and anime come to our world to do heroic stuff, and the Manga „Welcome to Japan, Elf-san“ is about MC and his Elf friend traveling between our world and fantasy world whenever they go to sleep
Young female protagonist trying to adapt to an unfamiliar world with no harem or wish-fulfilment power fantasy. Isekai getting back to the classic roots is a great thing to see.
@@dynamicworlds1 The only problem I have with bookworm is that this adult woman just possessed a random girl and entirely took over her life, and no one seems to have a problem with that. If one of my siblings were randomly possessed by an adult and the sibling part of them that was there before was never seen agian, I wouldn't be super cool with that.
.... and Space Jam, and Digimon, and Spirited Away, and the 1980s Dungeons and Dragons Cartoon. Heck the second half of the original Neverending Story book is an deconstruction of these sorts of stories.... where the nerdy kid who gets transported into the fantasy world he was reading about gets ultimate power and actually turns into a ranging douche canoe who wants to take over the world.
The thing is, for many of them the isekai element could be removed and it would be a normal fantasy series. I agree there are a ton of them, but what helps is since it's just one small element of a series, you can go a lot of different places with it. There's Cooking, Farming, Adventuring, World Domination, SoL, etc. etc.
The problem with the 3rd isekai is that the author doesn’t know what to do with the characters and they’re served to continue the plot. The problem with haha anime in general is when the author has a lack of knowledge on something in the show it REALLY does show
I don't think there's necessarily "too many" it's just that they're all uninteresting, I mean the best part about Isekai is that you can do literally anything and view it through a modern persons eyes, but these shows almost all do the generic "medieval fantasy world type 1" or have plots that don't benefit from being Isekai instead of normal fantasy.
Isekai are nothing special or deep as shonen, especially when the mc has no plot or destiny as a someone who has already born there and he is just there to have a break from reality to make it relatable There are exception like shield hero
I think the issue with isekai is more just that.. Granted it could be cherry picking but you could probably find 15 different generic light novel adaptations for every decent series
I still can't believe that it's the same author from Chivalry of a Failed Knight. I really liked the anime, but not liking prodigies at all. Guess the credits goes to anime staff not the author, both on them with their own means. It's ironic since kemonomichi with Natsume Akatsuki Sensei's writing have great impact as konosuba
If anyone wants to read stuff of the same concept done right, or at least better, “How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom” and “Release that Witch” would be highly recommended.
One thing that really grinds my gears is how this supposed "genius" surgeon operated in a non sterile area, did not address the hypovolemic shock of the patient, and damaged the internal organs by literally shoving a hand in the chest cavity. That "genius" should be in court facing malpractice.
So glad to hear you talk about Ascendance of a Bookworm, I was so sad that got left out of the list. It might not be for everyone with its lack of action but it's just so damn charming.

It's basically the new *Harem, Highschool, Teen* setting of old times. Now, they are just spicing and mixing things up from the last season's Isekai Anime until the genre itself "dries off" and the next fad comes. Rinse and repeat with next fad.
@@sheriffaboubakar9720 There are some great subversions like The World God only Knows and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, though. But the last one doesn't have that element as it's main focus, it just makes... fun of everything, this included.
I mean, the prodigies isn't even a harem anyways, as far as I'm aware, only 2 girls love the mc. Most anime that people themselves lable as harem aren't even fucking harem.
Christ, all of a sudden, an idea for an isekai anime hit me like a ton of bricks. What if there was an isekai about a protagonist that just keeps dying in every new world he goes to, each world is slightly different from the last, and the protag has such an explosive and overly-confident shithead personality that it always gets them into trouble and eventually killed.
The only thing that comes close that I can think of is the LN “Even If I’m Reborn as a Cute Dragon Girl, I Will Still Make a Harem” where the MC has a shitty snobby personality in his previous life as the ruler of a medieval kingdom. So in his next life he is punished over and over again whenever his behavior becomes apparent and never gets what he wants in the process.
What if it ain't just one person, but an entire Heavy Metal band of four? -) Think Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, Dokken, all rolled into one... )) What, their Sex-Drugs-Rock&Roll lifestyle seems like the exact type of thing that would kill them off quite consistently - and yet they absolutely do NOT despair, use magical bulls.t to rock even harder, and soon embark on a Multiverse-Wide Tour banned throughout the Multiverse! ))
In Ascendance of a Bookworm, I really appreciated that after she creates shampoo her family's hair keeps the glisten gained from using it. Edit: It's not often that pancakes play a role in story. 👍
That would be good. Classic style fantasy heroes who had to work for everything he ever achieved taking on a bunch of cookie cutter NEET otaku Isekai protagonists that just had everything handed to them on a silver platter.
I've read two manga where the MC is a gun nut and uses magic of some sort to recreat guns. One is just world domination isekai by with guns. The other is GATE: Thus the JSDF Fought Here but the JSDF is a one man army with a harem.
Here is an example that should clearly show the main problem with your post. ">Four-sided Square That's a redundant statement" "Now now anon There's four-sided objects that aren't squares" Redundant is used when an attribute that can be used in a definition of an object are used in a sentence as an adjective to differentiate it from other of the same object. Other objects sharing that attribute has no relation to the redundancy of the statement. If someone says a round fruit was redundant then the correct way to refute that would be finding a fruit that was not round, instead of finding a round object that is not a fruit.
Juan Ortiz I think the point is that if there are still new isekai that can be considered “enjoyable” and “unique”, the genre still isn’t “too saturated” just yet.
@@phaser4150 Not so sure about that. While their may be enjoyable isekais, many would be better off in other genres or just flat out dont need to be isekais. Also, the shear amount of isekais means that a lot of studios are working on isekais while manga of different genres are being ignored. Look at JC staff's rushed debauchery of OPM season 2 versus their solid adaption of Don machi season 2. Shonen would cause this issue but most shonen are not seasonol. So no, it is not too saturated in the fact that enjoyment can be derived from some isekais. However, the attention the industry has shown towards it is kind of a negative.
LVL 999 Boss I only partially agree with you. There are some isekais that don’t need to be isekais to work (DanMachi is the best example; you could also probably modify Average Abilities as well), but the huge majority of isekais do rely on the “another world” schtick to work. Part of the appeal of isekai is escapism, and how ideas from the normal world and the other world cross over. Taking that aspect out from “Ascendance of a Bookworm” or “Overlord” would fundamentally break these anime. Another thing is that the development of isekai doesn’t necessarily affect the quality of other anime. Sure, it can, but One Punch Man is not one of those. I highly doubt that DanMachi is anywhere close to the main reason for the low quality of OPM S2, considering there are many other (more likely) explanations for its downfall. I do agree that there is a lot of focus on isekai right now, but I don’t think that it is a genre that is only good until a “set amount” have been made. It’s a genre that you have to judge based on each individual work, and not the whole, especially since isekai seems to have entire subgenres of its own (harem, comedy, realistic, slice-of-life, etc.)
I just want an Isekai where a total Chad with top tier charisma and a sympathetic, personable demeanor is summoned to a world full of abject failures, losers, and deadbeats, and goes on a quest to improve the lives of others not because the world will be destroyed by some evil demon lord if he doesn't or whatever, just because he's a cool dude who wants to help others better themselves.
i would reverse the story: Chad Thundercock gets reborn as an average dude and decides to spend his time reaching his physical peak again because he likes the challenge. During the story he becomes an inspiration to others
"Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun" is pretty much an isekai as well, if you consider the demon realm another world. It's a really good show, full of lots of heartfelt and humorous moments
I mean, I think our professional shitbag counted it as isekai on the fall 2k19 season video, I was unpleasantly surprised it did not count as isekai enough to enter this vid.

@@zomfgroflmao1337 Fuck. I don't really like watching anime anymore but you've got me with two of my absolute favorites, Spice and Wolf and Log Horizon. I have to watch this now, don't I?
".. seven geniuses in their respective fields" My thoughs: "Did they hire seven specialists/scientists to help with that huge demand of knowledge or did they study wikipedia for some years?" Answer: Non of it. They have no idea about anything. Will not watch, am already disapointed
Honestly, it's actually fairly fun to watch. But you absolutely have to be able to ignore that part of your brain that questions too closely where they get the resources from, how they build them, etc. At it's core the series is a power fantasy variant where the MCs are moderately smart about how they approach the situation compared to the average MC. It's in a subgenre of isekai where people ask, what if we went to another world with all of the knowledge on X and just ran with it to it's logical (or illogical) end. Kinda like those two isekai where the MC is a dungeonmaster and uses modern gamer logic to exploit the hell out of the system and build ridiculous dungeons/not-dungeons.
@@aoitamashii thank you. This seams like a solid and non biased review. For me personally, you need to know that this is my favorite thing: a realistic exploitation of knowledge in a fantasy world. The protagonist needs to know and think of things I didn't, which shouldn't be hard because I'm not a specialist but a guy that watches science and engineering videos for fun. Except if it's made by an author that doesn't even care of course. I read too many bad ones to waste even more time with this one. I got enough rather good ones already. Example: "Isekai Tensei Soudouki" (manga)
@TheFandrian I guess you mean Doki Doki Literature Club? Because doki doki is just a Japanese onomatopoeia for heartthrob. Not very frightening on itself...
Before this debate degrades to internet shouting match... "Is it literature?" Has two aspects. Wildly, every printed or written work is literature, in the same way that every scribble is technically art. The question should be is "Is manga a fine literature?" I tend to say yes, but still has a long way to go. It's still a very pulpy media that contains a lot of garbage, with the greatest creation rising to the top. Most of us knows less than 10% of the all mangas, that's how oversaturated the meduim is. So if you a medium by the percentage of quality work, than Manga is not a fine art. If the fact that quality work can represented only by this media is enough of a criteria for you, then I guess the answer is yes...
Like a truck-driver that got reincarnated in another world. He finally realizes the evil he's committed in unleashing all these otaku weirdos on these unsuspecting worlds... so he gets a job as a carriage driver and makes constant laps around town... To make sure the weirdos stay dead.
Yesterday I checked the "most popular" category on Crunchyroll and it was almost entirely by-the-books op protag harem isekai. Never watched an isekai on my account before, so idk if it's just personalized suggestions. But the fact that it's seemingly only become MORE popular really sucks lol
@Tesla-Effect The LN is very good as well, and goes into even more detail about the world. If you like in-depth world building this is a very good thing to use your bookwalker code on...the Average is a better one considering so far as Dominic Noble would put it, this adaptation is in Name Only.
It's amazing!!! I'm am in awe because it's so realistic. The struggles of even having paper as a peasant in that world is so surprising. There's a clear distinction of what the upper and lower class have. Most of the protagonist's community don't read or write. So it tackles the issue of literacy in this anime among with other things. It's really great! (Lol reading is a superpower!)
"Stuck In Another World, But I'm Sick of Isekai So I Decided To Become A Demon Lord, Destroy The Damn Thing, Then Go Home." The Isekai I would make at this point. Or if isekai is going to stick around a return to old school portal fantasy not wrapped up in conforming to stereotypical game tropes.
In another world with my house keys! In another world with my grand piano! In another world with my favorite pencil! In another world with my smartpho- wait
Here's an idea for a horror/comedy/action isekai: an American 20 something is sent to a world based around horror elements, like gothic and other. Along with 5 others, they must work together to fight evil, save people, and get back home. And instead of bei g OP, they must use their skills and wits and determination to overcome their obstacles.
@@jamestomato1744 Something like that, yeah. Though nowadays, I've added two more people (4 guys, 4 gals) and it be like if horror tropes and isekai had a love child that got it on with 80s/90s crazy-ass schlock anime, and their kid got busy with the doom franchise, leading to THAT kid developing humor from "Harley Quinn", a little "South Park" and "Archer" and the TFS abridged works.
I'm glad you finally mentioned Bookworm this time. I regret you didn't add it to your list before either. And season 3 of Spice and Wolf to finish the already finished novel series would be great!
Re: Monster was a guilty pleasure manga of mine that definitely slid into isekai territory. It was really fun seeing the protag getting more and more powerful in different ways but the only thing that made him happy was when his friends discovered how to brew beer.
I'm happy to see Bookworm getting some love. It's my favorite show of the season for sure. We've been lacking in a realistic take on fantasy settings and Bookworm has thus far done it very well. I don't mind your typical overpowered protagonist gets reborn in another world and has an easy time of it stuff, but it's gotten rather boring with just about every isekai doing the same thing. Bookworm changes it up and I love that. And even though we've had hints that Main can use magic, most other isekai would introduce that in the first, maybe second episode, and our protagonist would learn everything instantly and have no real problems ever again.
Well, I like KonoSuba because Kazuma is far from overpowered. Also, his party is technically OP in narrow means, but for the most part are all flawed, broken, and useless. It subverts expectations and is also hilarious. However, I do understand where you're coming from. I love realism in all mediums, so an isekai that is so really gets my blood pumping. Spice and Wolf is definitely one of my top anime that I truly enjoyed.
I really like the anime, but after episode 2 I started reading the manga and the manga is probably the best manga I've read. All the little problems the anime has are gone.
@@jon_with_no_n3065 it's definitely a slow pot boiler. So I fully understand and respect why it's not everyone's thing. I'm also a Librarian and philomath so there is some subjective taste present ;)
I also feel like it would be fun to see an isekai set in a low fantasy setting where all the bog standard isekai protagonists (i.e. NEET otaku gamers) drop like flies from various things (such as infected wound, disease, trying to fight using unsuitable weapons, pissing off nobles) while someone with actually useful knowledge is able to survive and thrive. An isekai about a doctor being transported to another world and having to introduce medical techniques, prevent the spread of the plague, and find ways to get by and improvise without access to modern technology could also be pretty interesting.
First thing that came to mind when I first read your comment was "Cage of Eden" (Manga only idk if there's a light novel, never bothered to check) It has all the elements that you mentioned but maybe toned down and is more on the darker side of things. Basically like Lost(?) where they need to survive and whatnot. If you like Dr. Stone, then I wouldn't recommend this manga enough just be prepared for the gore, violence, and a s*hit-ton of fanservice but the plot twist was just... *speechless Give it a try if you want. Sorry for the comment hijack and have a good day sir!
I personally haven't watched it, however, bookworm is my brother's favorite anime of all time. Average ability on the other hand, probably has the greatest concept for an isekai I've ever heard of, and I will definitely try and find the time to watch it.
You know it's getting bad when even dub actors in one of these shows (yes, I watch dubs, bite me) are saying that isekai are over saturating the market by incorporating it into the dialogue.
Not to mention to many anime to begin with who the hell can keep up their maybe more good anime out there that aren't getting the attention they deserve
@Caio Coelho Even so, the fact we have more isekai both this season and this summer alone than all of 2018, if not on par, or even more isekai than Summer and Fall 2018, is a huge concern. Not to mention, people say Marvel movies are oversaturating Hollywood, so I wouldn't say isekai oversaturating the market is entirely nonexistent or a topic to be dismissed, and I think it's as important to discuss as whether or not Marvel is or isn't ruining Hollywood. IDK about you Caio, but given the circumstances, I don't think either oversaturation or even the overabundance of isekai this summer and even this season is something to undermine or be dismissed out of hand just because YOU think it's something that can be "easily ignored", especially when you factor in shoddy isekai like Isekai Cheat Magician, Arifureta, Master of Ragnarok, Another World With My Smartphone, and others. Not to mention, it's worth mentioning gamers both in and out the UA-cam community, are at least willing to address the oversaturation of microtransactions, while calling out EA, Activision, the ESRB, and recently Bethesda and COD Modern Warfare with their respective controversies, and even trying to get Congress to look into the microtransactions, or "surprise mechanics" as EA likes to put it, while us anime fans can't even decide how much isekai is too much and then do something about it. And people like you with opinions and mindsets like this aren't helping either. Like Geoff said, with the way anime's heading towards, it's only a matter of time before we find ourselves with double, if not triple the isekai we have this season, and it's damn near past time we start waking up and addressing a couple things BEFORE it happens.
feargm No, it’s a pretty fair comparison. Both are over-used cash grabs flooding the market and the consumers are helpless to stop it. For every isekai that gets an anime adaption, that’s one less opportunity for a great yet lesser known light novel/manga to get an adaptation.
@@noahwinns-cromer6914 The comparison to gaming doesn't really fit as for anime it's a simple watch it or don't watch it matter whereas for gaming the whole controversy that called politics to the table is that there's potentially psychologically addictive gambling schemes promoted in games rated for ages 3 and up. It is not about the "oversaturation" of microtransactions but rather the way they are implemented. If it was a cut and dry deal of "pay 2 dollars, get a new weapon" a couple whales will just fork over the money while everyone else will dismiss the game for its pay to win features and move on to the next. I don't think there's too much Isekai. In the end Isekai is merely a setting so it's like saying there's too much Fantasy or too much Comedy. What I think the problem is that Isekai is now being associated with "OP MC in medieval sword and magic World, possibly and probably with harem along the way". So, in my opinion, it's not like we have too much Isekai but rather too much copy&paste stories instead of more original and diverse ideas, even if those ideas are Isekai. One of the big selling points of Isekai is that you have a protagonist with pre-existing values, morals and common sense that is brought into a different world that might have a completely different set of values, morals and common sense, especially when magic is involved. A story could play off the culture shock alone quite a bit. Doesn't have to be medieval sword and magic either. What about a more advanced technological world where scientists are researching black holes and experimenting with worm holes for space travel or something. An experiment could go haywire and result in a temporary connection to another world which causes the MC to move over. No magic or even intend necessary. No need for manipulative organizations and the like. And this is just the base setting so you can go anywhere from there. Have it be a slice-of-life of MC exploring a more futuristic world or maybe a thriller where it was a government research lab and MC becomes a high priority target for organized crime because of his value to their research into worm hole technology (scientists don't have to be bad for that to work either). And you can still throw in magic with all that. What if they managed to integrate magic into technology. They could've build a completely different society based on that to throw of the MC and make it more interesting to watch and explore. That's all still Isekai but varied enough to not overlap with 20 other shows in the same season.
I'm waiting for "Fiancee's Observation Log of the so called Villainess" to get an anime adaptation. I loved the light novel, I am loving the manga and I would hope whoever did the anime would do a great job. I think it's another interesting take on isekai too
@@lmaAsian The Otome Isekai era is coming, my brother, Ascendance of the bookworm is sort of a first step (though I felt it a bit slow, I'll give it a chance later), but Death Flags is our Icebreaker.
I'm genuinely so grateful you brought Ascension of a Bookworm to my attention, I've never seen anyone talk about it, but it's exactly the kind of show I love, I know I'm gonna be religiously watching it as it comes out!
I just love a high quality isekai that has an interesting world and characters, and not recycle plotlines and basic tropes. That's really all there is to it, i think.
I just don't get why they all use the same god damn setting. Like, 'isekai' just means it involves at least one person being sent to another world, you can do so much with that, yet all these shows lock themselves into such a narrow set of tropes, I can't wrap my head around it! I mean, *A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court* and *Alice in Wonderland* are both isekai, yet they have radically different settings that are interesting to explore in their own ways. Why can't my reaction to a new isekai be "Oh boy, I wonder what wondrous new magical land I'll get to explore alongside the main character this time?" instead of "I wonder what single trope out of like 50 that are apparently mandatory they're going to subvert this time." Like, "Oh wow, the chosen hero with overpowered abilities, who is a generic nerdy Japanese highschool student that inexplicably attracts women to him, summoned to a shitty dragonquest ripoff setting with elves, catgirls, and videogame stats to defeat the demon lord is actually... I dunno... edgy this time and is going to join the bad guys! Wow! How original!" I mean, I'm not much of a writer or anything, my prose is sloppy, and I have trouble committing to anything, but at the very least I'm capable of a bare minimum of originality.
Isekai only for western medieval fantasy. Never set in sci-fi world or other country like japan itself. Japan have lot of folklore, demon, and magical creature but they never make it isekai and only about how those creature survive in the modern world. Also, they would never, ever able to make a Lovecraftian isekai.
I agree wholeheartedly. Also, how about Isekai where the protagonist doesn't get bullshit powers to let them be a mary sue? Like you said, isekai just means being sent to another world, you don't need to give the protagonist super powers n' shit. How about just seeing them having to react to the new world they're in. I mean, I get it, it's because isekai these days is nothing more than wish fulfillment for depressed japanese men rather than about actually exploring the concept. But come on.
@@KhanMann66 Memory cheat? Like, she remembers a lot of seemingly random things that wildly vary from each other? If so, that's just how memory works. If you read something interesting to you, you're gonna remember it, especially if you've read that thing more than once. Which, as a bookworm, is likely something she did frequently. Imagine how boring someone would be, if they only had knowledge in one specific topic. If that's not what you meant, then clarification would be appreciated.
I’m working on an Isekai novel that goes against the grain of a lot of the tropes, and I’m honestly excited to sit down and actually start writing it in June or July. I’m gonna try my best to mix Isekai with a genre I’ve only ever seen mixed with it while tackled in Ecchi, and I’m setting out to prove it can work without being Fucking Gross.
That’s not the mean, either. It’s just half the maximum. Average Abilities is basically what happens when your local deity failed their statistics class.
Yeah Digibro would "have a word" with anyone who enjoys a show even barely outside of his extremely narrow sense of taste. He's the resident angsty hater of the UA-cam anime community.
how about an isekai about a goblin reincarnating as a human in the modern world learning how not to be a feral trash person, while having a secret plan to open a portal so his overlords can take over
I want an Isekai where there is more than one other world, and the villain jumps from world to world causing havoc there, or something. OR the world the protagonist's going to doesn't have magic spells AT ALL, it's actually a *more* technologically advanced world. That'd be p cool too
Still, any story which is based around leveling and increasing stats feels like an isekai. If Naruto had a stat sheet and a list of skills for each character, it would feel like an isekai.
it's rather difficult to get excited for iskeai, not because of the overuse of the trope, but the fact that to date, XD no isekai story is ever done. they are designed as potential eternal cashcows with no endpoint in sight, and abandoned quickly if they dont pull the max numbers all the time every time. they all end on a 12 episodic season of "THERE MIGHT BE MORE WHO KNOWS BUY OUR MERCH , " a bit pet peeve of mine is people demanding that i invest on a story , without actually ever seeing the end, it gives people a free card to write a ruinous ending that undoes the progress and fails to deliver on anything and the worst they get is a bad round of media coverage. not to mention, excessive but not actually meaningful heteronormative, no commitment in relationships cause if the main character picks a girl the rest of the harem breaks apart, no challenge, since challenge requires the possibility of loss and that's a big no no, the same elf girl with blond or green hair that i swear moves between realities like some sort of chaos deity and looming threats we can't subscribe to cause we know for a fact, our main man is safe, he is Jesús reincarnate, he aint dying to no demon lord. XD
From my understanding, Average Abilities is taking a totally different route, compared to the LN and Manga. Apparently the first arc villain didn't even appear in the written works. With that in mind, we could get anything, and reading ahead might not mean much. The pacing in the first episode was awkward, mainly because they were trying to start in medias res, and skimming on the explanation. Bookworm is my favorite show this season. So much, that I'm reading the LN alongside it, knowing that the season will end before it catches up to the book series. At the rate it's going, it'll hit the end of the first book around episode 6 or 7. The worldbuilding is a good change of pace. It stays grounded in reality, but adds just enough otherworldly elements to keep things unexpected. This is seen mostly is the different plants and animals. It's also great when Myne uses these fantasy items for modern conveniences, such as shampoo and pancakes. I haven't seen the last show yet, but when you compared Ringo to Dr. Stone, that brought to mind that Senku is still bound loosely by the restrictions of his environment, and he started from nothing. Every creation of his is built on dozens of hours of hard labor. I unpaused the video, and you pretty much covered that point. You have a bunch of OP protagonists that can pull off bullshit moves, just because they're geniuses in their respective fields. At least it's better than a single character that can do all that.
Fair enough. Personally I don't really care about the genre if the execution of the anime is good or at the very least interesting. I'm not a fan of romcom, but absolutely had a blast with Kaguya-sama after finally watching it a few weeks ago.
Isekai isn't a genre. What it is, is a setting. Or, perhaps more apt a plot device. Isekai come in all different genres and have been around since at least the 80s. They're just so darn convenient by allowing you to hand wave all the fish out of water setup.
Spoiler: there are NO cute girls, the Isekai is a Cyberpunk dystopia, all the women sport military grade cybernetics, all the men have embraced the Disco style, the streets are ruled by ruthless corporate criminals and violent biker gangs, and the planet is on the brink of a global socialist revolution... -)) Oh yeah: and the year is "fifty". When you have so many isekai that somehow going "Oi ik let's take something that's already oversaturated in another genre and make it isekai!" Is a good idea cause the market is already oversaturated and we haven't even finished the 1st gen of the isekai era.
Glad to hear Bookworm is turning out good. When I first heard about it I was really interested, but I tend to wait for episodes to pile up before I start watching, and it's not action so nobody was talking about it, so I really wasn't sure how it was shaping up. Hope those strikes get taken care of, man.
@@N0lta21 Funny thing is, for me, the manga was a bit annoying at the start (well, Main was, refusing to try and adapt to her new conditions, and acting so spoiled). Because chapters took a long time to release, I felt it was going too slow (opinion changed once I bought the actual first volume). In the end, I'm glad I kept reading, and I'm really enjoying the anime.
Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?! or I going turn this world in weebs. Ascendance of a Bookworm or Simples life is good and have real realities is better in an other world
Ascendance of a Bookworm is actually my favorite show of the season, though as I'm reaching chapter 90 of the LN I'll soon will be similarly starved for reading as our heroine.

(English is not my native language...Sorry about that.)
'Our old friend Truck-kun' makes me laugh everytime. Also 'Average Abilities' and 'Bookworm' are on my list- Bookworm sounds like the fantasy slice of life i've been asking for!

GG Yeo there are many of us who , following a lottery win, would be prepared to throw money at someone like Mike Inel (the guy who did the KS act 2 animations) to make that happen. Meantime I might start reminding people it’s KS’s 10th anniversary in just over two years. There’s still enough people around to make something happen even if it’s not as grand as an animation. Also it makes me happy that a non-zero amount of people got the reference.
@@Jayfive276 Honestly, one of my goals is to learn to animate. I want to be able to animate certain sections of KS as I feel like they will be better animated. Like Hanako crying, Rin's breakdown, and Hisao's speech to Emi on the track. (And yes, before you ask, all the sex scenes, especially Hanako's one. I want to try to make that scene even more uncomfortable than it already is, for fun. You can all now throw your money at me now.) Maybe I will learn to animate in two years, just in time for its anniversary. Also happy that there are people who make KS references.
The only reasons why I wouldn't love a KS anime are 1) inter-route continuity gets pretty messy so I get the feeling it would take a biased view no matter what, and 2) Shizune is my favorite and I'm really not looking forward to reigniting the flame wars with a new audience.
oh i was sad when you missed Ascendance of a Bookworm on your fall list. It quickly became my fav manga, which led to me the light novel and there so much more to look forward too =). Hopefully more people will see it.

Cyberpunk isekai? -) American 1970's isekai? -))
not anime but the greatest isekai ever in my opinion would be muv luv, a visual novel triology that I can't recommend enough. first off, no fantasy world operating on rpg logic here, it''s from high school rom-com mecha vs aliens apocalipse in a parallel world now, emphasis on parallel world since the story makes full use of it's nature as an isekai story and a visual novel setting up this multiverse theory that the main character has to solve even getting to the point of having different instances of the same person in different universes collaborate to achieve stuff or things happening in mecha world influencing how the story plays out in the original one, kind of like Steins;Gate. Also the story doesn't pull any punches, especially in the non censored version, some h scenes are your usual "gotta have some h at the end of the route" stuff but some are just too important to skip and some even hard to watch, not going to spoil stuff but both sexually and not this games know how to make their 18+ rating count, this game will make you feel the traumas of the mc by traumatizing you along with him.
speaking of the Mc, he has one of the best believable character arcs in an isekai I can think of, going from asshole ecchi Mc to a good soldier and by the end a goddamn reluctant war hero. the supporting Harem is also very good, kinda tropey at the beginning but most have something behind their character archetipes and even more when you start comparing them with their alter egos from the second universe, all in all it's mostly a great story.
since I have written so much about all the great stuff I feel like I should mention some that might turn you off
first off, it's a long, long story, each games has hundreds of hours of content to read trough, not to mention that the first two games Extra and Unlimited are mostly an introduction to the final chapter Alternative.
the first one especially takes place entirely in the normal world and the Mc is entirely static trought the whole thing, it's mostly there to introduce all the characters and getting to know them as much as possible before going over to Unlimited that thankfully was released bundled along with it. also while the first games let you get to date all the main heroines in Alternative there is only one (rather predictable) true ending, so unless your favorite happens to be her you're in bad luck. the art style is so early two thousands it hurts (those hair designs look sharp enough to cut steel) but in my opinion has aged rather well compared others and in general both character sprites and backgrounds are pleasing to look at, though not particularely special.
sorry for leaving you a paragraph but I really love the thing and at this rate it looks like it will remain an hidden gem outside the V.N. comunity

">Four-sided Square
That's a redundant statement"
"Now now anon
There's four-sided objects that aren't squares"
Redundant is used when an attribute that can be used in a definition of an object are used in a sentence as an adjective to differentiate it from other of the same object. Other objects sharing that attribute has no relation to the redundancy of the statement.
If someone says a round fruit was redundant then the correct way to refute that would be finding a fruit that was not round, instead of finding a round object that is not a fruit.

Isekai is Fantasy, so...

I just saw this title and thought, “this is so true”.
"Except the world's greatest politician, who hasn't done anything." - IE: he actually fits his description.
Yesterday I checked the "most popular" category on Crunchyroll and it was almost entirely by-the-books op protag harem isekai. Never watched an isekai on my account before, so idk if it's just personalized suggestions. But the fact that it's seemingly only become MORE popular really sucks lol
ascendance of a bookworm looks really interesting, I'm gonna have to check that out
Do it!

I can not wait for that girl look like the naruto character rippe off
Seconding the LN recommendation. I've started reading it to a nine-year-old recently and she's kinda obsessed with it now.

You got the long title down, all you need now is anime studio to adapt it

"Hardscrabble Woman in King Louis XIV's Court"

Here's an idea for a horror/comedy/action isekai: an American 20 something is sent to a world based around horror elements, like gothic and other. Along with 5 others, they must work together to fight evil, save people, and get back home. And instead of bei g OP, they must use their skills and wits and determination to overcome their obstacles.
So...an isekai dead by daylight?
@@jamestomato1744 Something like that, yeah. Though nowadays, I've added two more people (4 guys, 4 gals) and it be like if horror tropes and isekai had a love child that got it on with 80s/90s crazy-ass schlock anime, and their kid got busy with the doom franchise, leading to THAT kid developing humor from "Harley Quinn", a little "South Park" and "Archer" and the TFS abridged works.
So Ravenloft as an isekai? I'm hip.
High School Prodigies is the kind of show that will probably have an abridged series that’s way better than the original
There's one called "how a realist hero rebuilds the kingdom" or something like that. It'll get an anime eventually
Yeah, most trashy isekai series treat the medieval fantasy world as some sort of heaven with no real problems and everyone is nice to MC.
I hope Bookworm gets the attention it deserves. In four episodes it's threatening to become my favorite standard isekai of all time.
12:53 well that just sounds like a danganronpa rippoff. Except they don't kill each other.
Ascendance of a Bookworm is AMAZING!! One of my favorite shows ever.
I really like the anime, but after episode 2 I started reading the manga and the manga is probably the best manga I've read. All the little problems the anime has are gone.
@@zomfgroflmao1337 I´ll read the manga or the light novel as soon as I complete the anime!
On the back of the first episode I picked up all three currently published LN. Burnt through them in a weekend. The series only gets better!!!
That’s so crazy to me. I found it unbelievably boring and dropped it at ep 3.
First thing that came to mind when I first read your comment was "Cage of Eden" (Manga only idk if there's a light novel, never bothered to check)
It has all the elements that you mentioned but maybe toned down and is more on the darker side of things. Basically like Lost(?) where they need to survive and whatnot. If you like Dr. Stone, then I wouldn't recommend this manga enough just be prepared for the gore, violence, and a s*hit-ton of fanservice but the plot twist was just... *speechless
Give it a try if you want. Sorry for the comment hijack and have a good day sir!
I personally haven't watched it, however, bookworm is my brother's favorite anime of all time. Average ability on the other hand, probably has the greatest concept for an isekai I've ever heard of, and I will definitely try and find the time to watch it.
That Time John Lennon Got Reincarnated as a Virtual Sim-Racing Driver Who Looks Like The Stig
*bites hastily*
I think it's another interesting take on isekai too
Lol how many isekai are there with "Villainess" in the title
@@LimeyLassen Quite a lot. The "whole reincarnated into an otome game" genre seems really popular with ladies (as in, most of them are shojou).
Bakarina's anime needs to succeed if we want to get adaptations for other otome isekais like Fiancee Observation Log

Wow! How original!"
I mean, I'm not much of a writer or anything, my prose is sloppy, and I have trouble committing to anything, but at the very least I'm capable of a bare minimum of originality.
I want an isekai where an MC is transported into Cyberpunk kinda setting or something futuristic
Hadi Ferlan that’s actually disappointing, isekai has the potential to be so much more
Honestly man. The settings from Isekai are so generic. Also, for them going to another world, there is usually very little worldbuilding.
Isekai, more like Ise-why are there so many? ...
Ha ha ha I'll be here all week.
Lol
Ascendence of a Bookworm is probably one of the best anime in the past few seasons.
Her modern memory cheat does get annoying at times.
@@KhanMann66
Memory cheat?

Yeah Digibro would "have a word" with anyone who enjoys a show even barely outside of his extremely narrow sense of taste. He's the resident angsty hater of the UA-cam anime community.
Digibro's definition of bad is very loose, and he often complains about things that are non-issues; he's the Jim Sterling of anime.

Just dropping in my one cent.
Danmachi is NOT an Isekai.
Yh ppl seem to forget that cus I has tons of generic isekai themes
Still, any story which is based around leveling and increasing stats feels like an isekai. If Naruto had a stat sheet and a list of skills for each character, it would feel like an isekai.
Me: *reads the title and has not even pressed play yet “Never has a truer word been spoken, sir.”
it's rather difficult to get excited for iskeai, not because of the overuse of the trope, but the fact that to date, XD no isekai story is ever done. they are designed as potential eternal cashcows with no endpoint in sight, and abandoned quickly if they dont pull the max numbers all the time every time. they all end on a 12 episodic season of "THERE MIGHT BE MORE WHO KNOWS BUY OUR MERCH , " a bit pet peeve of mine is people demanding that i invest on a story , without actually ever seeing the end, it gives people a free card to write a ruinous ending that undoes the progress and fails to deliver on anything and the worst they get is a bad round of media coverage.
not to mention, excessive but not actually meaningful heteronormative, no commitment in relationships cause if the main character picks a girl the rest of the harem breaks apart, no challenge, since challenge requires the possibility of loss and that's a big no no, the same elf girl with blond or green hair that i swear moves between realities like some sort of chaos deity and looming threats we can't subscribe to cause we know for a fact, our main man is safe, he is Jesús reincarnate, he aint dying to no demon lord.
Nobody:
Otakus: *TRucK-kUN!*
Isekai is just another genre, it would be like expecting rom coms to go away.
That's a good point.
Fair enough. Personally I don't really care about the genre if the execution of the anime is good or at the very least interesting. I'm not a fan of romcom, but absolutely had a blast with Kaguya-sama after finally watching it a few weeks ago.
Rom coms are trash
Isekai isn't a genre. What it is, is a setting. Or, perhaps more apt a plot device. Isekai come in all different genres and have been around since at least the 80s. They're just so darn convenient by allowing you to hand wave all the fish out of water setup.
That thumbnail is amazing. And I for one welcome our new Isekia overlords

@@Jayfive276
Honestly, one of my goals is to learn to animate.
You can all now throw your money at me now.)
Maybe I will learn to animate in two years, just in time for its anniversary.
