  • This is a story about a kid and a milling machines' hapless encounter with ebay's siren song. How does the new vise check out?
    Not that great, but also not that bad.
    Vise break-down & mill vise chat. I get into inspection & measurement: specifically checking squareness in the home shop.

    Community college Metrology instructor chiming in with a pedantic nitpick/GD&T observation: The flatness inspection not only assumed the granite was flat, but also the bottom of the vice is perfectly flat and perfectly parallel to the inspected surface. Legally, a parallelism check was done, not flatness. Without a CMM or a granite with a hole for an indicator, you would need to get the vice up on jacks or shims and start tweaking out the error if you truly wanted to inspect Flatness. It's exercises like these that really drive home the differences in GD&T controls for students.
    Love your videos and sense of humor, TOT, please feel free to wave me off as one of those crazy quality control road blocks. Also, a Mitutoyo straightness master was around 5k last time I got one for my lab, and that's without a reference block.

      Assuming flatness of the plate, or at least a stable reference, wouldn't it be more accurate to keep the plate from moving and find the flatness mathematically?
      Isn't flatness independent of how canted one way or another it is, just whether it could in principle be tilted to be flat- i.e. it lies In plane.
      If the table was flat but not level, would still work, lack of flatness would ruin everything.
      Weird chicken and egg problem right there, I guess that's what the 3 plate lapping thing was for?
      If you took multiple measurements all over the piece then you could fit some kind of linear model to that, and then do a good was of fit measure(R^2 or something) to get the linearity of the surface, and hence its flatness.

    Oh I bought a vice off eBay, £50, 9" when I was really just starting out. What that thing needed was something next to it for scale, like a house... Being 6ft 9" I can lift it, about the height of the back of a van, once. And it makes the performance difference when in the van, down hill it seems quicker, breaks caused a large bang if applied hard although the van struggles to stop a few football fields further than it used to, hills also seem to be considerably longer. I worked out that the reason for the vans breaking issues was that the vice's mass was affecting space time.
    The point of this rant, don't buy things on eBay with out knowing the actual size of it. In this case 9" meant a vice that was about 2 and a half foot long, and able to cause cold fusion if dropped.

      I can beat that. I bought a bank of three six inch vices on eBay. I naively assumed that they were simply bolted to a plate but it turned out that they were manufactured as a trio of vices with a common base. We had to use a fork-lift to get it into the boot of my old Jag and I was relieved to get home without needing new springs. At my end, I had to use an engine hoist to get the gang of vices out of the boot and into the workshop. It should fit on my mill, but would make the table ridiculously heavy. I've been advised to cut the thing up and make it into three 6" vices - but that seems a shame. I simply cleaned it up and put it in a corner of the workshop until I can find a use for it. I wondered why no-one else bid on a set of three machine vices for £50. Now I understand...

      Not entirely, when you're machining to .001" (about .0254mm exactly) this vice could give some very slight errors, but if you're machining to .0001 (.00254mm) then it would be rubbish. For a milling machine like TOT has, he isn't likely to be chasing tenths or microns, but if you have an actual real CNC mill and you're making parts as a business, this thing is very likely to be garbage and isn't nearly good enough for the work, if you need high precision that is.

    • @JoshuaNicoll
      @JoshuaNicoll 3 роки тому

      @Jeremy Raab rare for manual but not unheard of for certain parts when it comes to CNC, its more common in very technical parts that can't be ground or lapped afterwards

    Just a quick one. When checking for perpendicularity, rather than using a ball bearing or fitting the "bumper" to the base, just turn the main rod over so that the ball end is down, as that is what it's there for.

    Fyi the ball on the top of your adjusting rod on your surface gauge is actually what you were supposed to use at squareness check you just flip your rof around do the ball is in the groove of the base and you press that up against your square block. Which creates your pivot point.

      I've been in the same position, but reversed. I went through the whole rigamarole of making a 3d printed wind turbine that was all metric, and it turns out the bearing it uses is a bastard to get here. Either you pay 30 bucks for shipping or it takes two months.
