  • This week Plant Lovers, a flower spike I have been watching with BATED breath to see what would emerge! The plant is a Paphiopedilum hybrid seedling I bought about three years ago in my initial flush of orchid-mania during Covid, which languished and I basically gave up on! You'll have to watch to watch the video to find out what my accidental tough love care was that ended with this fabulous flower! In this video I'll go through the light, water, potting, fertilising, temperature and humidity requirements of this hybrid which is a cross between Paphiopedilum Western Sky 'Snow Cloud', Paphiopedilum Turban and Paphiopedilum Spicerianum.
    The two books I mention in this video are: Asian Orchids by Teoh Eng-Soon and Orchids at Kew by Joyce Stewart.

    My grandmother and my aunt used clay pots all the time and that's where I get it from but since I started watching your UA-cam channel.. I too use clay pots now to put my orchids in. I did some decorated ones where was paint or glaze on the outside and terracotta on the inside raw. Another words and I thank you. I think they're going to be much happier❤😂🎉 God bless

    That orchid resembles a dog. I just brought my first Sydney orchid. A bright yellow flower. It was very exciting to have come cross the last plant in a native nursery

    You should see Donald Sutherland in Mr. Harrigan's Phone. He has a whole conservatory of orchids in this film.

    Hi Matthew, did you get to check out the OSCOV Orchid spectacular in Skye ? I went yesterday, lots of orchids on show from clubs across Vic and a huge area to buy a variety of orchids. It was mad lol, I saw lots of Paphs and noticed the beautiful mottled leaves, but had thought they maybe too complex for my amateur experience. Might give them ago at a later time.
    On the way home, we stopped at Collectors corner, wow, what a shop ! I did come home with two cascading Cymbidium seedlings :)

    I can’t wait to get my first Paph, I’ll be looking at the spring orchid shows over the coming month 😊 thank you for sharing your experience so far. I love how you mix up their environment and chuck the outside haha so relatable. It’s so exciting when they thrive outside!

    Hi Matthew. Love your channel. Such great information and very much enjoy your style! As an aside from the marvellous orchids, what is the plant with the long two toned leaves in the background please?

      Its a Schismatoglottis - needs CONSTANT watering which I often don't give it!!😐

    Hi Matthew! New glasses? Very nice. My multi floral which was an established plant when I bought for $50 two years ago is putting out a flower spike, beyond excited. My first paph bloom and first bloom on this plant.

    I have one speckled warm growing paph. here in Brisbane. I’ve had it in the shade house & it flowered then grew 2 new plantlets. Then I noticed the leaves were too pale, dry & twisted!! I brought it inside with my phals. at a north facing window. It’s continued to flower again. Also I’ve seen growers chop tiny bits of moss into their bark mix. Maybe paphs. may do well in that mix - slightly moist, free draining?

      @helloplantlovers  11 місяців тому

      It depends on the Paph and your conditions really, but your version of free draining and moisture retentive will be perfect.

    Beautiful, I can see the spicerianum in this orchid . I have the spicerianum spiking currently.

  • @michaelmccarthy4077

    I think being half spicerianum it would benefit from your conditions there. In its native habitat, the summers are generally quite warm, humid and wet and the winters are significantly cooler and drier.

    Mathew, i recieved a large paph that came with dry and very hard roots. No visible hairs. How would you recommend i rehydrate it?
    Thanks

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  8 місяців тому

      Oohhh I'm not sure other than just pot it up and give it a good soak with a Seasol or another seaweed based tonic in dilution. Good luck!!

      @@helloplantlovers what I did was soak for an hour in cal mag and Kelp max. About 50 ppm each, next day repeat. Let sit and hour then flush several times. It's just starting to come around. It has a 16" span with two mature growths. Time Will tell. Thanks
