- Yes Plant Lovers, I can't RESIST an orchid show and sale and a few weekends a go was the Warringal Orchid Society winter show: warringalorchi... So off I went and accidentally bought five plants! It was great to meet so many viewers of the channel so thank you all very much for saying hello and to Kim for giving me some brilliant Maxillaria advice! The fiver plants are:
Dendrobium Colonial Campio x Dendrobium speciosum 'Windermere'
Cymbidium whiteae
Cymbidium tracyanum
Sarcochilus 'Edith'
Maxillaria nigrescens
And if you're in Victoria and you're keen to know when all the orchid shows are, you can find out here: oscov.asn.au/
I have a play list for Australian orchids here: • AUSTRALIAN ORCHID SPEC...
And a Cymbidium care video play list here: • CYMBIDIUM ORCHID CARE
Hi Mathew, I was very involved with society shows & sales years ago and from my experience I very much doubt that society officials would allow an orchid with a virus on their sales table. I could be wrong but also any grower with a conscience wouldn’t sell it anyway. Keep us posted on that gorgeous plant, it would be such a shame if it did end up in the wheelie bin. Thanks for sharing your new orchids.
I tend to agree.....we'll see! Thanks for watching!
🏆Orchid Haul Like button smashed👍
Thank you!
I still haven’t quite forgiven my partner for thinking he’d help some of my orchids, by moving them into a brighter location. My dendrobium speciosum (which had been a gift from a dear friend) turned black that very afternoon.
That particular plant is an absolute beast, and despite the hideous black scorching, it produces the mist astonishing clusters of yellow blooms. I’ve got a wonderfully chubby new growth, and am hoping for a wonderful display.
Sounds brilliant! They do love full sun....it will just look awful...but flower well!
What a great haul of orchids! Your Dendrobium Gippsland is gorgeous, I would love to find one here. (UK)
Great haul! That cymbidium tracyanum is my favorite and price $30 - what a bargain!!!
Congratulations on your haul and 7k subscribers!
Thank you - and thank you!
That dendrobium is absolutely gorgeous! To me, the flowers almost look like they've been sketched from the way the purple blends to the yellow. It does sadly look like it could have a mosaic virus to my untrained eye, although, saying that, I don't think the yellowing is symptomatic of a virus like that and thus sun damage may be a more accurate diagnosis.
Whichever it is, I'd stay vigilant and enjoy those lovely flowers!
Thanks for watching!
What lovely cymbidiums! I have several......adore the flowers. And, I grow "hot" growing varieties here in southeast Florida, USA. Thanks for the info on Maxillaria. I have two lovely plants that haven't bloomed since before COVID. I'll treat them differently now. (We've been having temps in 110 F + for most of the summer here.
Yes - I'm not sure how to achieve both 'cool' and 'plenty of light' in a warm climate in summer!!! I'll try!
Hi there the damage to the leaves is cold damage because it is a hot/cold hybrid it is susceptible to it, it's caused by moisture on the leaves becoming cold enough that the cells in the leaf break down and cause the brown spots so just remove the damaged leaves and it is definitely not a virus so in the winter months keep it in a dry and warm position to help stop the damage in the future good luck and happy growing Mitch.
Interesting! Thanks for watching!
Your first Dendrobium has been registered and so is Dendrobium Gippsland. I am shocked at the size of those blooms, almost always when you add in kingianum or speciosum, the blooms are reduced accordingly so great find. I would agree that the plant is probably not virused, the blooms are clean as are the new growths and the prior growths. It may have a little fungal issue on the older part but that is to be expected if an orchid is grown outdoors.
Thanks for the name! It is a stunner - and for the sun damage reassurance!
Hi Matthew, another great video! The speciosum hybrid is spectacular even if it could be infected. I recently rewatched one of your old vanda/holcoglossum videos where you were looking for cool growing vandas. A suggestion from Howard’s orchids - vanda barnesii (occasionally considered a variety of vanda javierae). I recently acquired a seedling of this and I’m excited to grow it on. Good luck with this den.
Thank you - yes I saw that too!
awesome !! have a good weekend enjoying your plants they are lovely
I will - thank you!
Beautiful colour, the harmony. I start collecting Aus native orchirds, which one should be for a complete novice as me, thanks.
Dendrobium kingianum, Dendrobium delicatum and Sarcochilus are all very easy and rewarding as starters - Sarchochilus particularly as they grow and flower fast from seedlings. Dendrobium speciosum is wonderful but can be a bit trickier and can take ten years to flower from a seedling. Good luck!
Wonderful haul! Love the flowers on that speciosum. Such a beautiful color. Thank you for your humor and your knowledge on orchid growing. I disagree with your self description as being a rank armature! Lol
Thanks for watching!
Love your channel. Such great information 🎉
Thanks for watching!
Love that den. It's stunning, the leaf mark looks like sun damage to me, sure it will be fine. Bit jealous actually 😢
Thank you! I think so too!
Great Mathew. I'm running out room .lol
Ah.......well I have killed a few this winter.....
The tracyanym is stunning! In Ohio US that would be an amazing price .
I think it's pretty good here too!! Thanks for watching!
I'm pretty sure you can get the leaf tested to see if it is virused for a pretty moderate fee in Aus or home test kits that are a little bit less effective in that they don't test as many viruses but are good for the ones they do cover.
That tracyanum is insanely gorgeous! Another one for my wishlist!
Thanks for watching!
Nice!! I've joined my local orchid society, went to a meeting and came away with a corpse flower plant, lol! One of the guys was giving it away. Luckily, it's far back in the yard, so if it does bloom, we won't smell it. 🤣 Anyway, thanks for another great video!
There you go! The joys of club membership! Thanks for watching!
In Brisbane I spray all my orchids with fungicide & maybe you could give the Speciosum a spray? A systemic one would kill the fungus to stop spread. It’s certainly a stunning specimen & is worth saving!
If indeed it is a fungus I will! Thanks for watching!
Congratulations on 7k subscribers!!!
Edit: that species cymbidium was so cheap! They were going for $65-80 USD at a recent show in San Francisco. Shows are dangerous, I picked up ahem 17 orchids at that one. They were seedlings though! And rare! And I got some great deals. I regret nothing! Hahahahaa
Thanks for noticing!
I use a copper fungicide on any Dens that have black spots. Good luck. Gorgeous haul
Thanks for watching!
Hello, I'm trying to ID an orchid I have. I'm sure you have it too. It's a miltassia? Yellow/ white lip with a pink center a quite narrow bloom rather spiders like. Thank you
Hmm...I have Miltassia estrelita bolero and Miltassia Lavender kiss 'Lavender Taffy'
@@helloplantlovers maybe not a miltassia then, possibly a brassica. I must have seen it on another channel.
Marvelous haul🤗. My Maxillaria Tenuifolia is 4+ year old and never bloomed😩. I must confess that I made a mistake: I divided it in 3 and learned that they do NOT like to be divided😱😍
Ah...well I'm DETERMINED to get mine to bloom this year!!
🙏
Hi guys I am new to collecting orchids. Can I divide plants when there is a new spike growing approximately 1 inch growth.
Hi there - depends on the orchid, the season where you are, the size of the plant and if it needs it or not! Many questions and no answer I'm afraid!
@helloplantlovers
Heelo sorry for my lack off information. I am in Melbourne, Heidelberg area . There are 11 pseudobulbs with foliage that gave me 3 long spikes of yellow flowers also 12 pseudobulbs that are brown however still firm. My mistake I made was pruning the foliage. Very potbound 25 cm
Sounds like a Cymbidium - hard to tell without seeing it though! This Cymbidium re-potting video might help though: ua-cam.com/video/e5YRwr7fkeE/v-deo.html @@neilwhite3595
@helloplantlovers
Thank you Matthew
Looks like sun damage to me..❤😂🎉
Yes!
Heyo, another awesome vid although been nearly a year since I was watching your videos hope alls been peachy >.< lost some plants an gained some over these 10 months...Suppose I should subscribe *subscribed*
Thanks for watching - yes - life and loss for me too!
I am certain the committee members in charge would have noticed the plant of it was viruses and removed from sale. If not, then you should speak to them to get their act together.
Thanks for watching!
Can you please share your seaweed tonic????? Please 😢
It's an Australian brand called Seasol available in most hardware stores. I'm sure there will be a similar product in other regions.
Thank you Mathew!!!! I'm in California, Los Angeles to be exact 🌻
Sadly I have purchased virused plants from growers and society sales tables. Either the sellers are unfamiliar about orchid viruses or simply don’t care. If you want to know straight away get it tested.
Thanks for watching!
Addicted much mattew? Haha
