Pact with the devil 😂😂😂😂 'I sold my soul for orchids' But Thankyou 😀 no pact, I just seem to have hit upon a combination that can work for most diff types of orchids, in my environment. I get anxiety thinking about when we move house, and having to figure out a whole new set of rules again 😅
Thanks for this timely video Annabel. I am just getting into Paphs and wondered why it was recommended that the media level should be so much higher than most other orchids media level...now I know. Love your videos. 🌞
Thanks Margaret! Yes paphs are a little confusing, 'don't pot your orchid too low into the pot ever, unless it's a paph, then bury it' 😂 there's a fine line too, I feel like burying them in moss or really moisture heavy materials then may cause rot? So I guess if growing in a more moss heavy mix you would want to put more moss in the pot, then top layer it with medium to smaller grade bark? That could work too 🙂
The Orchid Room I’ve started moving some of the big boys and girls to the floor either on pedestals or directly in a beam of grow light. I get some anxiety thinking about what will happen when they all get bigger. I’ll have to get better at giving bits away! It’s a good problem to have though for sure :)
I hope they do great too! Some people find it too dry, another way you can get around that is by burying the bases a little so new roots come out below the dry layer. Good luck! 🙂
The Orchid Room I have separated the smaller leca beads especially for the water loving orchids so the phap will get those. I am working on my Paph at this moment while UA-cam is on 😆, it has really good roots, I am sure it will do fine because I kept it wet all this time.
Smaller LECA also works! I so do not envy you the sorting process 😆 I did this with westland bark recently to get big seramis. Worked out the seramis sinks and bark floats, or the other way I can't remember. Did a lot of soaks, rinses, serving and separation. It worked! But so much time!
@@TheOrchidRoom My old salad spinner broke so I use the container and the basket to wash the leca in, the basket on the bottom has different sizes holes. So I accidentally discovered it is a excellent separator for small beads💪🏼😄. It is so easy for me now .
All my paphs do very well in it, my delenatii's and malipoense are in pretty much pure seramis, no fit throwing and great root growth. They enjoy lots of moisture and inorganic media is naturally airy. I also have high humidity, warmer temps and good air movement.
yeah, I watched a newbie repot a Paph and they put it to one side of the pot, in too large of bark (just bark) and too high in the pot. I commented that they really need to center it, the plant needs to be lower in the pot and they might want to add some sphagnum to retain moisture. Apparently they found my comment offensive based on the response I got. I mean, how dare someone with experience suggest that they've made a mistake? Well, two months later the plant had lost all of the new roots because they were trying to grow in air, all of the old roots because the mix was too airy and dry and the new growth was failing. Three months later and it was all but dead. I did let them know I tried to warn them. Well, I wasn't quite that nice.
Ah no, that's a shame they couldn't take your advice, I think lots of people make that mistake thinking about how they would pot phals- not realising that there is slightly different set of rules with paphs. Even the ones that are less terrestrial seem to grow in heavy leaf litter? Which must be quite mulchy. I'm not sure about the cliff growing ones, constant trickling down cliffs maybe? None of them seem to enjoy drying out much! Hopefully the person learned (the hard way) now 🙂 Even if advice given doesn't fit with how you grow, there's always something to learn! Hopefully they take that away! I do wonder about how people cope with those climbing paph/phrag species, it put me off getting a micranthum, I saw a few posts about it being a climber! I only have a few paphs... well, this one, a malipoense, a hybrid seedling and two delenatii, so I'm still learning about them! So far so good, but I would like to maybe try some of the other mottled leaf types soon 🤞
@@TheOrchidRoom That person didn't learn, last I saw they had killed another Paph. If you don't want to take the advice, or think it isn't right for you, there is no need to be nasty. Am I right? Yeah, I don't know how you would handle a Phrag bessae. Well, that isn't true, I have an idea that would be something to try with a climber but it is rather complicated. Unrelated but the division of Den thyrsiflorum I bought just arrived. Probably two years from blooming but for $10, I'm not complaining.
Yeah of course, absolutely no need to get nasty with anyone on here, especially when you are just trying to help them! Having said that, I did have one person tell me it was so terrible watching me torture my orchids, and another person telling me to 'shut up and get to the point' on an update video, but that's cool, they don't need to watch then 😂 It's one of the reasons I always appreciate comments that say things in a kind way, which you always do. UA-cam is really invaluable for the person making the videos to get new ideas from others to help them, as much as the people watching. Like an online orchid club! I wonder for the climbers, about some sort of self-watering diagonal inorganic mount coming out of the pot.... I recently rigged something up for a pteroceras longicalcareum (that I shoved on cork when I got it, and subsequently neglected because I fail with mounts!) with some pvc tube and a foam mount from this swedish company that makes synthic....placed in a pot then filled around with lava rock. Gonna have to let that one dry between watering though, or it will get too wet against the stem, but it works fully as self watering. So I can just give a little water with my pump sprayer once a week and the mount sucks it up from the pot.... had to get a little creative recently 😅 Ooh thyrsiflorum! I'm really getting into these dendrobiums. I started off being like, I don't need those cane type or fancy dendrobiums, and then Nina gave me the keikis and now I'm hooked 😂 $10 is a bargain, maybe it will even surprise you and give you a few early blooms!
@@TheOrchidRoom your idea on the climbers in similar to what I was thinking. My thought was a piece of slate in a reservoir of water with one of those desktop fountain pumps to move water from the reservoir to the top of the rock to let it seep down. I think some type of moss would need to be attached to the slate, though. And a t-fitting would probably be necessary at the top of the tubing from the pump to allow a slow flow down the slate and the excess just running back to the reservoir. The water trickling sound in the grow room would be soothing to boot.
I think originally this was a vegetable serving spoon or something, we got given it when we moved in and I quickly pinched it for orchid use 😂 Thanks Jane, and thanks for the tip about the gravel! 🙂💗
Hi there! Thanks for this video. I have the same hybrid phaph and it just finished blooming. The pedals fell off and to has something that looks like a seed pod on it. It looks like yours has the same. Is it a seed pod? If so, can I propagate with the seeds?
I swear, everything you touch turns to gold. You have a real talent, or maybe you made a pact with the devil, lol.
What a root system!
Pact with the devil 😂😂😂😂

Wow, thats 1 huge, beautiful paph, you definately have a wonderful knack with orchids.
Thanks! 🙂 I'm hoping it keeps getting bigger 🙂 The orchids do all the work though, I'm just their devoted slave 😂🤦♀️

Thanks so much for your advice Annabel 🌞
Nice set up , those roots look happy, and I love the freckles on the leaves!
Thanks Anne! It does have cute leaves doesn't it, wonder if there is some mottled leaf paph way back in it's parentage!
Thanks for the video, quite helpful for my first paph.
It’s HUGE!
Thankyou! I secretly want it to grow into a Vanda, but then, space, but then, it's foliage is so pretty!

Wow it’s huge , love it . You have very skilled hands
Thanks 🙂💗
Love how beautiful and clean this Paph looks, most of my orchids are now in SH In leca, my two Paph will be converted tomorrow, can’t wait.

My paphs would through a fit in that mix! So glad you’ve found something that works for you

Awesome video. That is quite a large large paph...I need to use a spoon like that cuz I am very messy when I repot... Thank you Annabelle.

You should not repot it.
