Just a heads up for anyone planning on doing this upgrade. You will need a cutting wheel or some way to cut a small square that extends the hole where the old PSU was so you can access the power switch if installed fans down, or the Plug if installed fans up. Either way you will need to extend the PSU hole in the case.
@thejoe5415what GPU did you end up doing with? Also the power supply..did you mount it fan down or fan up? Any issues? I'm about to dive into a 7040 budget build
might be a little old, but if I wanted to do this can't I just upgrade the case? so upgrading my PSU wouldn't be a problem along with getting better air ventilation?
Hey! Thanks for making this - this was the video that convinced me to finally get into PC gaming. I recreated this build almost exactly, using a 7050 mini, i7 7700, 1660 super, and adding a 1TB M.2 SSD. The largest obstacle for making this work is simply drilling out that flat plate where the PSU sits. Once I cut that out, the 500W system sat in nicely and has plenty of room for cable management. Even with all the extras thrown in, the 7050 closes up no problem and is a perfect “sleeper” gaming pc.
@@Nate-pb9zo for sure. I’ve been playing most games on “balanced” or “medium” settings. @@stolenchaser the Optiplex case extremely easy to work with. You’ll have to cut the plate by the PSU in order to get the PSU to fit correctly, but no other case modifications are needed. As for the GPU - the 7050 can fit a card that’s up to 221mm in length. An 8gb RX580 will just barely fit the space. I’d make sure the 3060 you purchase is less than 221mm.

I got an i7 today that tops at 4.0GHz with turbo for 200. Same model. I got it because I got a swft Radeon 6650xt and realized after that it was a full size gpu. Looked all day on Amazon for a full size tower that was already put together for cheap and this is what I got.
Does the upgraded cpu fan block the memory slots
Question (Pls respond): does PSU fit the same way but upside down? Since you said it make a weird click noise if put the right way. So... if i put the PSU upsidedown i just have get the cord upsidedown right...?
The psu wouldn't work the other way. My guess is that it was intended to be used in a specific orientation.
side ways? (btw thanks for responding)@@RAVisuals
Great video!! Followed the steps and I notice that the fan stays on when optiplex is shutdown. Is the only solution to flip the switch on the PSU to off?
you can fix this in the bios on power settings, i had the same problem :) just go to the power option in bios, and play with it there. i dont remember where it was, but its the gpu fans that will be maxed out i guess.
Is there a better PSU option? The one you installed seems like its poorly built by the Amazon reviews. Im sure that it will work in the short run, but I would like something that would last longer.
I just modified one a few weeks ago by using the cooler master V750 sfx gold and managed to plug an rtx 3060 to it, minor modifications needed to secure it to the case with a couple holes drilled to screw it into place.
@@MarcelinoAzueta a 3060 fits in the 7040??
@@geral3993I have a 3050 optiplex
Its sff so small it will probably fit in.😂
Since the case is covering the psu on/off switch, do you just leave it in the on position?
I have the exact model now and I am thinking of upgrading it... Lets see how this goes... ooh a sub is worth it.
Did you actually mount the cpu with screws or just let it sit in the case?
Which of the 3 cables did you use to plug in the GPU also if I’m using a GTX 1050 Ti do I need a different cable
The msi cards fit like a glove in the MTs. My 3070 with a 1660 super is awesome. I’m m surprised you went with a 6th gen. Just in the last month I got an HP Prodesk for $80 with an i5 8500 and that Opti 3070 i5 9500.for $100. An upgrade to an 8700 or 9700 will be substantially better. I’m ass assuming there was room to just keep the psu switch on, since it was covered by the case? I’m doing this to mine and would really like avoiding g cutting anything if I can.
I really want one of the 8th Gen ones but i haven’t been able to find a good one for under $200 recently. I’ll keep looking though!
@@RAVisuals I found a local pc recycling place for the HP, killer deal. I really like how the Prodesks are rather than this style of Optiplex. With pretty much the same size case they optimized the space much better.
@@RespekfulFungus i was actually thinking of trying those next too! They look like another great way to make a gaming machine

I bought a 7070 MT with a 9th generation i7 for 150 bucks, Now I'm thinking of buying a 6650XT XFX SWFT210, do you think it would be a purchase for this size case?
What are all of the Graphics Cards that fit inside the Optiplex 7040?
please answer, what brand to replace the CPU cooling fan with? Is the bolt position the same as the heatsink?
I have a 7050 and would love to upgrade the graphics card. Not sure what this particular Optiplex can take.
Does this way work for also installing a GPU on a 7060/7070 using a different PSU and the two adapter cables
hey i have this exact pc and i have an old pc case that i would really like to use with a power supply would i be able to move the motherboard and gpu into that case
where do you buy the pc?
eBay!
There is actually another fan connector on the board but you need to mod the cable because the connector looks like a cd-rom digital audio cable
will that power supply work for a dell optiplex 3060 as well? any help is appreciated!
Can you get a xenon V3 on that motherboard or a V2?
Thanks. Great explications. Im goona to remastered my opti 7040 to gamming pc with 580rx .
I have a very large GTX 1060 that's the same length as your RX 6650 that I was able to just barely fit in my OptiPlex 3050 - the power connectors are lower down so you can fit any GPU that actually fits in the case. I'd recommend the Optiplex 30xx series if you want a 7th gen CPU and newer components. Mine was only $81!! The 70xx series is just too hard to mod.
Would this PSU work in a HP Victus? AMD version?
Hey guys so let me explain i have a cosair 650w psu and it has 24, 6+2 and others so the motherboard i want to connect to has 6pin only? Here is the thing:
1) can i plug the 6pin on the 6+2 that is used for connecting GPUs on the motherboard?
2) psu require the 24 pin to be connected for it to work right?
3) arent i supposed to use 24 to 6 pin addapter? (Im having trouble funding it where i am and ordering is not cheap trust me)
I want to know if i can plug in the 6+2 pin split that i know is used for GPUs to connect to the motherboard, the motherboard is HP EliteDesk 800 G1 MT motherboard since its 6 pin on the mobo.
Will the power supply in the video work with a dell optiplex 7050?
What’s the next upgrade from the 1650 graphics card? Single fan 1650
can u please help me i have dell optiplex 3020 tower version i5 4590 and 12 gb ram firstly i wanted to upgrade my r7 240 gpu to rx580 but comp tech said my mothercard is not compatible and my psu is not enough is any good suggested gpu without i need upgrade my motherboard and psu
I'm wondering if a 3050 would work instead of a 6650xt ik the 6650xt is better, but I own a 3050 6gb vram from a friend's old rig, and I'm wondering if it could run 1080p 120 fps in a triple a game like fortnite?
watch the video
I wonder if you went to 1440p if it would take a load off the cpu a little more
Can you use a pc with the side panel off?
Can someone give me feedback on this. I want to build a budget pc that gets me 90 frames on like Minecraft with shaders on or games like cod. I know nothing about pc’s, I was wondering if there could be any issues and if there is can I fix it? If I get this I want to upgrade its internal parts, how upgradeable is this? I’ve heard about “bottleneck” and I think I remember the reason being the cpu holding it back. Can I upgrade the cpu in this?
Great video! Recently i bougth a Dell T3620 with the same cpu and put a RX580 8gb and a 650w certified psu and goes very well, Soon I plan to put an M.2 and 8GB of RAM more for the 16GB!🤗
Heck yeah! Probably does really well at 1080p
Ok I have a question. I just mounted a PNY GTX 1660 TI (about 9 1/2) card in my 7040 and I also bought this same PSU. Did you have to do some cutting to get the PSU mounted. Mine turns the PSU switch off when you try and screw that middle screw in to mount the PSU? What did you do to mount yours?
That PSU is loose, not even fixed with screws. The cut out for it is like half size.
How did you connect the gpu?
Great upgrade help
hello wha about the chip tpm 2.0
You should try a TFX power supply since its the same dimensions as the original PSU.
Do you know if the optiplex 7040 supports the i7-6850K or the i7-6950X ? i Know from a dell thread that it supports the i7 6700k but i want to push it a bit higher and because i found a good price for a i7-6850K
NO SHIT?!
can i do the same on a 7040 ? Is run the same way or not?

Great job. I have 8940 which put on a Nuctura fan works great. I wish pwr supply was a standard .Thanks.
yeah, would be awesome to see these with a stronger power supply out of the box. luckily, the mod isn't very hard at all!
I am not sure why but after changing the power supply to the one recommended, my computer started giving me this flashing amber light :(
he actually measures it :p
Good work cheap pc😁
I would love a 7060 build!
Can you please try this setup with the 1660 super? I’m looking to buy the same exact optiplex but just slap a gtx with an adapter if necessary or just swap psu

youre getting over 100fps but why does it look like its stuttering? is it just recording or its actually that jittery?
It's the bottleneck because the CPU is old
I did everything right and now it powers on and then powers off 4 seconds later can someone help me
7040 7050 max I recommend is a GTX1660 Super RTX 2060 or RX 5000 series the last of the pcie gen 3x cards unfortunately 😢 7060 7070 still only pcie 3 but 6 core+ can run a pcie 4 card up to 70% potential max fps
Won't the 2070 be too much if you just have it with stock psu

Does the RTX 4060 Low Profile work well with this Optiplex PC ?
Getting an Rtx 4060LP tomorrow with same specs as him except PSU is stock at 240w. Going to use Sata power for 8 pin I'll let you know how it goes and how bad the bottle neck is.
@@need32scoffee38 did you get this working?
@@tgatesjr yes used it for about a month, cpu im using is a i7 6700, only bottlenecks in high cpu intensive games, would only use a 4060 if you are doing 1440p gaming, anything lower and the cpu will bottleneck quite bad, around 30 percent. You can try to upscale which I've done, you trade lower frames but with zero stutters, psu is holding up just fine.

Here's the question
My nephew just recently purchased a Dell computer
Used server workstation PC
It’s a dell precision T7600
The video card that was in it was the MSI 1070 and with that side panel it was able to close
For temporary GPU I gave him my Asus RX5500xt
And found out that case will not close
What GPU do you recommend for that particular case and not the MSI or any other brand of the gtx1070
He is thinking about removing the brace approximately 3 inches where the GPU sits

I just did a similar build for my son with an i5-4690, 16GB of ram, a 1TB 7200 HDD, a 500GB Crucial SSD, a cooler master 650w bronze PSU and a 1050Ti. Under GB£175 for the whole build🤣
Why not just change the case for $50? Would that not save a lot of time and then make everything universally applicable? Also make more room for more fans and cooler.
