I put a 6600 XT hellhound in mine, I swapped out the 6700 for a 6700K, not much of an upgrade but I'll take whatever I can, now I have Chimera OS installed and use this as a living room gaming PC works great for 1440p60. Completely happy but I just wish I could get faster memory speed they would actually work with the motherboard.
I bought this exact model OptiPlex off of a local community center for practically dirt cheap and stuck in RX 6600 in here and it is seriously one of the best PC building experiences of my life. Great video!
Great video! Thank you so much!
Nicely done!
Just a heads up for anyone planning on doing this upgrade. You will need a cutting wheel or some way to cut a small square that extends the hole where the old PSU was so you can access the power switch if installed fans down, or the Plug if installed fans up. Either way you will need to extend the PSU hole in the case.
Was about to say this, so I'll just reply to boost this comment. Running the same Optiplex as in this video and that is what I wound up having to do in order to upgrade the PSU.
Solid tip!
Great timing. Doing a 7050 tomorrow
It is easy to mod the case so the psu does not choke when venting hot air outside. Did the same thing fits perfectly, but the pcie power for the gpu gets hit and pressed when the case closes. You can either cut a square out of the metal next to the ssd cage or use a 90 adapter to tilt the power plug down. 👍
This is an increible info for my pc, i have an 3040 MT (i5 6500 & DDR3L ram) currenly im using rx 460 and is glad to see how can i upgrade it, specially the psu
Friend, I have the same CPU and I put the RX 580 in it, my only problem for now is getting the adapters and the power supply to cover what it demands. Well, I live in a country where that is very difficult to achieve, however with time I will be able to get what I need. Excellent video, very inspiring. One more follower.
nada mas latino que decirle CPU al case
use two psu's
Awesome, my kind of mods. I have the Optiplex 7060, and yes, that has the 8th gen Intel processor. The advantage with that over the 5000 series is that, generally speaking, Intel 8th gen and newer will natively support Windows 11, without the janky work-arounds. Keep the videos coming.
Please tell me this applies for the Dell 7060 model. I want to go down the same route just my main concern is the Dell 7060 power supply. Is it swappable like this one is shown in the video? Thanks!!!
@@JohnH-ri5zv every PSU is swappable. just buy an ATX psu and 7060 MT. seeing as your a noob i wouldnt bother buying it and choose another pc D:
@@thenewsonatrainwhich one would you recommend then?
I think you should make a follow up video on finishing up the pc, like cutting out part of the back of the case, properly mounting the power supply, and closing up the sidepanel so it could be like a normal system sitting on the desk
Already in the works!
@@RAVisuals Aha, thanks
Thata what I was going to ask. Nice vid thanks
@@RAVisualscan't wait, good stuff man
@@RAVisuals I bought all the things you did to upgrade our optiplex but we're having problems mounting the power supply. How were you able to mount power when the switch and power cable input are on opposite ends. Also, do you have the fan facing the bottom? Facing the bottom seems like its not going to work. THoughts?
Do you remember the temps of the cpu when testing it. And do you think the new cpu cooler is better than the stock one?
I got an i7 today that tops at 4.0GHz with turbo for 200. Same model. I got it because I got a swft Radeon 6650xt and realized after that it was a full size gpu. Looked all day on Amazon for a full size tower that was already put together for cheap and this is what I got.
Great video! This is exactly what I’m looking to do! Would case swapping be worth it to possibly go for a more conventional psu? And also allow for a bigger gpu? Thanks! Also I’d like to see results with a 7060
Great job. I have 8940 which put on a Nuctura fan works great. I wish pwr supply was a standard .Thanks.
yeah, would be awesome to see these with a stronger power supply out of the box. luckily, the mod isn't very hard at all!
Did you actually mount the cpu with screws or just let it sit in the case?
Hey! Thanks for making this - this was the video that convinced me to finally get into PC gaming. I recreated this build almost exactly, using a 7050 mini, i7 7700, 1660 super, and adding a 1TB M.2 SSD.
The largest obstacle for making this work is simply drilling out that flat plate where the PSU sits. Once I cut that out, the 500W system sat in nicely and has plenty of room for cable management. Even with all the extras thrown in, the 7050 closes up no problem and is a perfect “sleeper” gaming pc.
Sweet. can you maybe tell us the average fps you get on some of the games you played ?
@@Nate-pb9zo for sure. I’ve been playing most games on “balanced” or “medium” settings. I’ll list out the numbers below:
-Helldivers 2 @ 55-65fps
-Warzone @ 100-110fps
-Palworld @ 50-60fps
-Apex @ 90-100fps
-Battlefield 2042 @ 50-60fps
That’s pretty much all I’ve played on this build. If you’re someone just looking at getting into PC gaming and having an enjoyable experience on a bit of a budget, I’d recommend this every time.
im going to build a dell optiplex pc. the optiplex i bought has an i5 6500, 16 gb ddr3, and 256 gb ssd with windows 10 pro. im gonna add a 600w power supply, 3060, and hopefully a 512 gb ssd. all in all this will cost $370. i just want to know, is the dell optiplex case easy to build in?
@@smoothkebab the Optiplex case extremely easy to work with. You’ll have to cut the plate by the PSU in order to get the PSU to fit correctly, but no other case modifications are needed.
As for the GPU - the 7050 can fit a card that’s up to 221mm in length. An 8gb RX580 will just barely fit the space. I’d make sure the 3060 you purchase is less than 221mm.
Nice! I definitely enjoy content like this. I built an 7040 with an 570 8gb. My lady currently took it over lol. She wants an mid tier build so she can run some triple A titles. So I'm currently in the market for hardware.
Awesome! Glad you enjoy this stuff!
@@RAVisuals for the 3050, what if you removed the front fan and cut open a hole big enough there for the gpu to pass through? and maybe replace the bottom drive bay with the fan?
Same setup here just 1650 1660 gtx with stock power supply. CPU fan upgrade not required
Great video! Recently i bougth a Dell T3620 with the same cpu and put a RX580 8gb and a 650w certified psu and goes very well, Soon I plan to put an M.2 and 8GB of RAM more for the 16GB!🤗
Heck yeah! Probably does really well at 1080p
I did the apevia sfx and a gtx 1660 super a few months ago on a freebee 7040.
You should try a TFX power supply since its the same dimensions as the original PSU.
Been runnin on an absolutely maxed out 7040.
650w psu, heat pipe style cooler, rtx 2070, 32g ram, m.2 boot drive, 2tb ssd (m.2 in pcie converter in the spare 4x lane) another 2tb sata ssd, case fans on the front in back grills and cut a neat rectangle on the side panel to add two smal fans directly above the cpu.
Poderia me informar onde comprou e quais itens? Estou querendo fazer esse upgrade.
How good does fn run
Could a 850w PSU unit over power my dell optiplex 7050
please answer, what brand to replace the CPU cooling fan with? Is the bolt position the same as the heatsink?
Since the case is covering the psu on/off switch, do you just leave it in the on position?
I have a very large GTX 1060 that's the same length as your RX 6650 that I was able to just barely fit in my OptiPlex 3050 - the power connectors are lower down so you can fit any GPU that actually fits in the case. I'd recommend the Optiplex 30xx series if you want a 7th gen CPU and newer components. Mine was only $81!! The 70xx series is just too hard to mod.
I would love to see a video on the 7060 build. With the i7-8700, that would give you a 6 core / 12 thread system. That would be both good for gaming or a second system for LINUX or something similar at a decent price.
5060 is great to same numbers
@@FunHobbies225 - The power supply might be a little light for a decent gaming build. 260W?
@@rickgrimes931 yea but I’m upgrading it to 500 watts
@@FunHobbies225 Nice, have you ever got around to swapping the power supply out of the Dell 7060? just curious as i have the Dell 7060 too and im looking to do the same thing
Can you please try this setup with the 1660 super? I’m looking to buy the same exact optiplex but just slap a gtx with an adapter if necessary or just swap psu
I would love a 7060 build!
Is it really usable? Will it overheat, because of the lack of space?
Were you able to screw this power supply normally to the Dell's housing?
I have the exact model now and I am thinking of upgrading it... Lets see how this goes... ooh a sub is worth it.
The msi cards fit like a glove in the MTs. My 3070 with a 1660 super is awesome. I’m m surprised you went with a 6th gen. Just in the last month I got an HP Prodesk for $80 with an i5 8500 and that Opti 3070 i5 9500.for $100. An upgrade to an 8700 or 9700 will be substantially better. I’m ass assuming there was room to just keep the psu switch on, since it was covered by the case? I’m doing this to mine and would really like avoiding g cutting anything if I can.
I really want one of the 8th Gen ones but i haven’t been able to find a good one for under $200 recently. I’ll keep looking though!
@@RAVisuals I found a local pc recycling place for the HP, killer deal. I really like how the Prodesks are rather than this style of Optiplex. With pretty much the same size case they optimized the space much better.
@@RespekfulFungus i was actually thinking of trying those next too! They look like another great way to make a gaming machine
yes please i wanna know if theyre worth to buy
@@RAVisuals
I bought a 7070 MT with a 9th generation i7 for 150 bucks, Now I'm thinking of buying a 6650XT XFX SWFT210, do you think it would be a purchase for this size case?
Is there a better PSU option? The one you installed seems like its poorly built by the Amazon reviews. Im sure that it will work in the short run, but I would like something that would last longer.
I just modified one a few weeks ago by using the cooler master V750 sfx gold and managed to plug an rtx 3060 to it, minor modifications needed to secure it to the case with a couple holes drilled to screw it into place.
hey i have this exact pc and i have an old pc case that i would really like to use with a power supply would i be able to move the motherboard and gpu into that case
There is actually another fan connector on the board but you need to mod the cable because the connector looks like a cd-rom digital audio cable
will that power supply work for a dell optiplex 3060 as well? any help is appreciated!
i feel like if you removed that lower drive bay on the front you could of installed a 120m or 140m fan would be quieter and move alot more air
You can get 460W, 500W and 600W 80plus Gold or Platinum PSU’s for the Dell Optiplex 7000 Mini-Tower Series. They come in the correct proprietary configuration and cost between $80.00 and $150.00usd.
Can you link me a 500 Watt one for my Dell 7060? Thanks!!
Can you get a xenon V3 on that motherboard or a V2?
Do you know if the optiplex 7040 supports the i7-6850K or the i7-6950X ? i Know from a dell thread that it supports the i7 6700k but i want to push it a bit higher and because i found a good price for a i7-6850K
NO SHIT?!
I wonder if you went to 1440p if it would take a load off the cpu a little more
How did you connect the gpu?
Hi mate, any suggestions to upgrade the graphics card in a 7040-SFF Intel core 4 i5-6500 3.2GHz.
Display: Intel HD Graphics 530 1GB.
I want to edit HD videos for youtube.
Cheers.
What’s the next upgrade from the 1650 graphics card? Single fan 1650
What are all of the Graphics Cards that fit inside the Optiplex 7040?
Great video!! Followed the steps and I notice that the fan stays on when optiplex is shutdown. Is the only solution to flip the switch on the PSU to off?
you can fix this in the bios on power settings, i had the same problem :) just go to the power option in bios, and play with it there. i dont remember where it was, but its the gpu fans that will be maxed out i guess.
can i do the same on a 7040 ? Is run the same way or not?
Can you use a pc with the side panel off?
GREAT VIDEO!! subb/liked...My questions please...how much RAM can be integrally-installed on the O7040, please? The most-amount of RAM? Thanks a terabyte!
I'm an old CAD-guy, who uses ActCAD, and that software's pretty-light on PC-resources. 2D-CAD Planwork is like that :-) I'm looking to buy this little PC & use your upgrade for my CAD-work. No weird lighted fans needed, for that! hahahaaa.
Perhaps next time you could expand on the PSU adapter, show the pinout and explain the mysterious bulge hidden under the heat shrink tube. The audience should know what it is and why it's there.
Ok I have a question. I just mounted a PNY GTX 1660 TI (about 9 1/2) card in my 7040 and I also bought this same PSU. Did you have to do some cutting to get the PSU mounted. Mine turns the PSU switch off when you try and screw that middle screw in to mount the PSU? What did you do to mount yours?
That PSU is loose, not even fixed with screws. The cut out for it is like half size.
Can that 660xt work in a Optiplex 3020 in the smaller case? I just inherited one of these office pcs. It’s a i3.
it wouldn't fit in anything smaller than this
I have the 5060 8700 core i7 a great one up to 64gb of RAM full size like yours pretty fast
Can amd graphics be installed?
Hey guys so let me explain i have a cosair 650w psu and it has 24, 6+2 and others so the motherboard i want to connect to has 6pin only? Here is the thing:
1) can i plug the 6pin on the 6+2 that is used for connecting GPUs on the motherboard?
2) psu require the 24 pin to be connected for it to work right?
3) arent i supposed to use 24 to 6 pin addapter? (Im having trouble funding it where i am and ordering is not cheap trust me)
I want to know if i can plug in the 6+2 pin split that i know is used for GPUs to connect to the motherboard, the motherboard is HP EliteDesk 800 G1 MT motherboard since its 6 pin on the mobo.
Can someone give me feedback on this. I want to build a budget pc that gets me 90 frames on like Minecraft with shaders on or games like cod. I know nothing about pc’s, I was wondering if there could be any issues and if there is can I fix it? If I get this I want to upgrade its internal parts, how upgradeable is this? I’ve heard about “bottleneck” and I think I remember the reason being the cpu holding it back. Can I upgrade the cpu in this?
I'm debating between this RX 6600XT/6650XT or the GTX 1050TI
Which is best and is the 6600 overkill? Please help need advice. Looking to upgrade my optiplex 9020 to make it faster and perform better
No the Rx 5700xt performs better than the Rx 6600xt
Wich is better, Optiplex 7040 or 3070 bro?
Just finished mine up with I7-6700, rx5500xt, 32gb ram, a 512gb nvme, and a 500gb ssd, and a cooler master sfx v550
How’s the 5500xt doing in there?
Only had it for a few days but it’s running really good
How's the PC
Some things are wrong, You are not explaining how to work all the cables of the PSU, also how did you secure the PSU to the case, second the FAN connected to the PSU must be running at full RPM, the noise must be anoying; after that the RAM, the speed of the ram and the limit of speed for DDR4 at 2400Mhz... few important things I guess. But the video has some good info.
Can you do this with dell optiplex 5050
Can you use the 8pin for the GPU power for the motherboard?
I'm worried about that power supply! It looks like you're blocking the power supply's fan. Instead of venting to the outside, it's facing the bottom of the case.
It’s fine. I did this build. Works totally fine mounted upside down.
If you have watch the entire video you know, that he changed the power supply to look with the fan to the top.
yeah my friends ran into this exact issue trying to do this build. they're aiming to use a different power supply as a solution
Question (Pls respond): does PSU fit the same way but upside down? Since you said it make a weird click noise if put the right way. So... if i put the PSU upsidedown i just have get the cord upsidedown right...?
The psu wouldn't work the other way. My guess is that it was intended to be used in a specific orientation.
side ways? (btw thanks for responding)@@RAVisuals
Here's the question

that is really a good optimization but the bottleneck is still gonna make a big issue because of the GPU and CPU gen

youre getting over 100fps but why does it look like its stuttering? is it just recording or its actually that jittery?
It's the bottleneck because the CPU is old
Can someone tell me a case that works with the mother board of the optiplex 7040 mt or the name of the motherboard
That's a difficult one, case swap is a bit too complicated for OEM PC´s, you will have to do modifications to the new case, like hole drilling and stuff like that to secure the board into place, you will also have to forget about the I/O shield and leave that big open space where the peripherals be connected or make a custom one from 3D printing or get creative, there is also the fact that you will have to buy a backplate that fits the holes of the board for the CPU cooler in case you want to keep the stock one, or buy a new one that includes such backplate, because the stock one is screwed directly to the side panel of the original case, so as you can see, there is no such thing like "a case that works with the motherboard of a 7040 mt", if you want to install that board into a new case, you will have to do measurements and read the specifications for each case before buying one that is most "appropriate" to modify.
Does the RTX 4060 Low Profile work well with this Optiplex PC ?
Getting an Rtx 4060LP tomorrow with same specs as him except PSU is stock at 240w. Going to use Sata power for 8 pin I'll let you know how it goes and how bad the bottle neck is.
@@need32scoffee38 did you get this working?
@@tgatesjr yes used it for about a month, cpu im using is a i7 6700, only bottlenecks in high cpu intensive games, would only use a 4060 if you are doing 1440p gaming, anything lower and the cpu will bottleneck quite bad, around 30 percent. You can try to upscale which I've done, you trade lower frames but with zero stutters, psu is holding up just fine.

Apex and lots of othersFPS games (like cod, valorant, cs go, ecc ecc) suffer so much and lose lots of performance if they are not installed in the main SSD.
I have your same specs on a MSI Z170 with a gtx1660, games installed on a crucial p3+ , and I have capped Apex at 200fps because I have a 165hz monitor and is useless having more.
Also I'm noticing your 6700 is not boosting to 4.0 GHz. There is a ton of optimization you can do and lots of performance you are leaving. This is a perfect machine to get on budget on competitive games.
It needs only some more in depth optimization.

hello RA Visuals ive been enjoying your videos a ton and i was wondering if there was a way that you could send that pc out to me so i could use it. I dont have the funds for a pc and i am super interested in gaming. I also want to grow my own youtube channel further so i can make videos just like you. If you can take this into consideration i would appreciate it a ton. Thank you

I just did a similar build for my son with an i5-4690, 16GB of ram, a 1TB 7200 HDD, a 500GB Crucial SSD, a cooler master 650w bronze PSU and a 1050Ti. Under GB£175 for the whole build🤣
