Went here back in 2000 and stayed in all 3 cabins, it was a great experience! Check out the bottomless pit and the last leg of the hike is pretty sweet, grass meadows and big tree canopies. A bit taxing on the legs but worth it!

We couldn't get the cabins the several times we tried. We had to bring extra gear to backpack and camped in the Holua campground. A few years later we joined our Haiku Maui friends one night at Paliku and one night at Holua. Both trips were unforgettable. The silver swords are remarkable as is the quail. Try not lighting a fire-remember you are backpacking & climate change doesn't need a fire in this day and age. We brought the top part of our camping stove from home and had to really look to find a butane canister. Lovely shot of the fog coming in the gap.

I will be visiting Maui for the first time in Feb'23 and would really love to backpack the same trail. I will be travelling solo; is the entire trail properly marked and easy to follow? Thanks in advance!

Yes the trail is properly marked. It's actually multiple trails starting on Sliding Sands and connecting to Halemau'u. I wrote several guides about the crater but check the one - Hiking sliding sands trail for all the details. They are linked in the description of the video! Have fun!

how long did it take you guys to reach the cabin and how long did take you on the way back

From the trailhead at the summit it takes about 4 hours to make it to this cabin. On the way up & out of the crater about 3 hours. Factor in extra time for the hitchhike back to your vehicle (assuming you only have one) and the several hours it takes to drive to the summit.
Jess wrote a detailed post about the Haleakala cabins with all the specifics that is linked in the description if you need more information!

This is so helpful, a few friends and I are going in September. How cold did it get at night?

Awesome, your'e going to love it. It got very cold outside but the wood fire stove was enough to keep us tasty and warm inside the cabin.
