I’ve been a part of a street medicine team in Skid Row for a while now. Thank you for sharing the voices of the people. The #1 thing I hear from people is that they just need to talk to somebody. Since being out here in Skid Row, people have asked me “well what causes homelessness?” There’s no answer to that. Of course there can be common themes, but everyone’s story is different, and the circumstances leading them to Skid Row vary- from the woman with a PhD in mathematics, to the family who walked three months from Ecuador to seek a better life for themselves, to the man who was born into homelessness, to those coming out of the justice system after decades being dropped off in a van in Skid Row. Thank you Drew for taking the time to share a glimpse of these stories.

I’ve lived in LA my whole life, Skid Row is one of those things that’s become normalized and sadly gotten worse over the years. I’ve learned that city wants this, because it’s easier to control them in a small area then have them spread out. This isn’t an accident it’s by design.

    • @truther001
      @truther001 3 місяці тому +39

But they ARE spread out all over LA, LA County and continue to grow, grow, grow. Honestly, I believe that services should only be provided to people who have lived and worked and paid taxes for at least 10 years. Everyone else should be given a bus ticket to wherever they came from and that city or state needs to provide for them.

This is all well and great, but why don’t we produce a bustling economy and stop the homeless crisis all together? Get people jobs, actual help for getting off the streets, Attorney General’s that don’t prosecute homeless as criminals for trying to find a place to sleep, like Kamala Harris put into place when she was AG California… if you want even a chance at saving these people, a majority sadly of whom are in my home State of California. Vote for the only sane option, Donald Trump.🇺🇸

But I do wish there was more out there for them when it comes to housing. It isn't enough. Too many people are forced to live on the streets due to their circumstances and it's not right that there isn't more for them.

Somewhere reality hit them hard, they still have a small child inside craving something better. Mental illness, childhood trauma and addiction can all be addressed if the ones that can make things happen would come together and offer them something better. I pray to see change before I die! You picture America 🇺🇸 as the best of best yet we have all this and more than half the population is in prison. It’s like the ones in those positions don’t care bc it’s not effecting them directly. LA has obviously changed so much since I was a kid in the 1960's living north of LA but visiting family all the time.
I live on Vancouver Island now and homelessness and drug addiction are rampant and a lot come from the cities and though the cities won't admit it I have met many who were given a check and transportation to leave the city and relocate to here. I know because I volunteered at our local Food Bank for a few years and got to know a lot of them.

Reasons I love it: I can help people I can listen to people and have people appreciate me and give me reasons to appreciate my life. Reasons I hate it: people aren’t appreciative of the free things they get they want more and more. People have thrown and almost caused me physical harm. I enjoy the connections I’ve made with people and the impact but it’s a job that wears down your mental health so much.

Thank you for showing people the homeless people are people. I live in LA and even in more affluent areas we have homeless encampments. I live near the VA and many of my unhoused neighbors are vets. I found that most just can't afford a place to live, some have mental health issues and some have drug addiction.
They need support and help not shame and to criminalize them. They need access to shower and toilets like the rest of us. Where else in the world are supermarkets locking up soap, detergent, toothpaste, while alcohol is out on the open.
In my experience unhoused people are amazingly kind and share with each other whatever they have.
It's so easy to help donate food if you want to. I've bought extra food on sale like buy one/get one deals or buy 5 for 5 etc
Rather than hoard when things are on sale, keep what you need and donate the rest.
Do what you can and be kind.

As someone who has been a Paramedic for a decade. The homeless are all people just like us. They had one or two speed bumps in life that escalated in a domino effect. We are all one paycheck, one mental health crisis, or one life experience away from being within that population. Please, please respect these people like they are one of us. Look them in the eyes when they say "hi" to you or just smile. The biggest thing they complain to me about is feeling invisible to the rest of the population. I would highly recommend volunteering at a local homeless shelter or any organization that helps this population. it will be okay.
if he doesn't want to hire people then that's his right.
AI is not a monster, if you don't want to use it you don't have to but it's here whether you like it or not.
learn to adapt to it and far in the future people will be laughing at how scared people were of it.

I live in LA and a lot of these people don’t want help. There are many resources such as government funded programs that help with getting jobs or low income housing, shelters.. food stamps, you name it. The only rule is that you have to try, and also that you must be sober. You heard that man, he doesn’t want a job that needs to be done in a timely manner or responsibility in general.. it gives him “anxiety”. Well news flash, it’s apart of life. Working at a job, having responsibilities is apart of being an adult and carrying your own. There are high rise buildings- luxury living apartments that are going up all around LA for the homeless and low income people… while us middle and lower class work our butts of day in and day out to be able to afford the little amount of space we get. I’m tired of the homeless being so entitled. Get up, get sober and get a job… !

Mental health is behind most if not all of these cases. Its a real thing that hinders peoples ability to function. They need therapy which is still largely inaccessable to people. Its very expensive and takes time to see improvement.

If they continue like this, no one will work and keep their system in tact. They need us, the modern day slaves, to keep the machine running. So no, I dont think their agenda is for this to be rampant. It wouldnt benefit them. This is lack of humanity and mismanagement of funds. They dont care about a small percentage, compared to the rest of us, who are homeless.

Hi everyone 😊 I am from germany and i work everyday here with people who needs my help like here in LA. I wish i could help here too. Its really important to help the people there with fresh food or to talk to them. Maybe you can help them only when you talk with them. Or you can bring them fresh water or something for the pets. Like dog/cat/.. food. But the important thing is never to promise them things. Because when you dont do the things you promise, they feel bad and dont trust anyone after that. You guys make everything better for them and you make them smile 😊 thank you for your daily work there. God bless you all ❤ Greetings from germany ❤
