    Culadasa (John Yates, Ph.D.) is a meditation master with over four decades of experience in the Tibetan and Theravadin Buddhist traditions. He taught physiology and neuroscience for many years at the Universities of Calgary and British Columbia. Later, he worked at the forefront of healthcare education and therapeutic massage, serving as the founding director of the West Coast College of Massage Therapy. Culadasa retired from academia in 1996, moving with his wife into an old Apache stronghold in the Arizona wilderness, where they deepened their spiritual practice together. He currently leads the Dharma Treasure Buddhist Sangha in Tucson, Arizona and holds retreats across the United States.
    In addition to teaching meditation, Culadasa is the author of the groundbreaking book, A Physician’s Guide to Therapeutic Massage, which has been through several editions and is still frequently used in classrooms today. He is also a lifelong sitar player and an amateur woodworker, with several hand-carved canoes hanging from the ceiling of his workshop. His wife Nancy and he run Cochise Stronghold Canyon Nature Retreat, a nationally recognized B&B featured in the travel section of The New York Times.
    Culadasa’s aclaimed book, The Mind Illuminated, is the first comprehensive guide to Buddhist meditation for a Western audience. It combines age-old teachings with the latest research in cognitive psychology and neuroscience, providing meditators with step-by-step guidance for every stage of the path - from your very first sit, all the way to mastery of the deepest states of peace and insight. This is the clear, friendly, and in-depth meditation manual that people have been waiting for.

    This man is a true gift to all genuine truth seekers. Deep learning and experience without dogma, grandstanding or an agenda. Everything he describes is verifiable through personal experience. No bullshit, just calm clarity of thought and presentation. His numerous offerings on YT and elsewhere are a beautiful gift to a confused, frantic world. A deep treasure trove of wisdom and extraordinarily clear, patient teaching.

    A brilliant teacher and his great seminal work compiled in his book helped me to get properly on the right path of meditation. That book took me to the correct path and changed my life forever. It’s a great pity the close people he also helped turned on him like rabid dogs near the end of his days.

    This is exactly what I have gone through and therefore find this to be one of the best explanations for meditators ever. I wish I had heard it sooner in that clarity.

      100% agree and I think many who've been serious about meditation for years have gone through this and had the same sort of results trying to talk to other people about it that he mentions in this video. Some of the negative commenters on this video are probably those exact kind of people who want to just delude themselves into believing their half-asleep lazy meditations are "good."

    This concept of keeping your attention anchored on something in order to increase peripheral awareness reminds of trying to make out something in the dark, like looking for stars in a light polluted area for example. If you keep moving your eyes around to look directly at any star as soon as you spot it, they will be dim and difficult to make out. If you let your visual attention rest on a single point and rather use your peripheral vision, your field of view will fill up with stars.

    I bought the book "The mind illuminated" over six months ago; have been meditating regularly since and am currently working on stage 4. This talk by Culadasa, as with all the talks I have watched is totally consistent with the instructions and guidance given in that book. These resources are a wonderful guide and there is the promise of further progress on the path. I believe he is the real deal and the book he co-authored is a wonderful reference to all. For further highly recommended reviews go to the Amazon book website where people have posted their reflections on his work.
    May all be happy.

    55”-ish The purpose of honing one’s powers of concentration is… ironically… to learn how to harness the peripheral awareness. As this skill develops, it then becomes easier to stabilize conscious, focal attention. This is predicated on there being causal reciprocity between the two: Stabilizing one’s focused attention increases the … “field” or “strength”of peripheral awareness… whatever this actually means. I need clarification, I must admit. Sounds like he’s on to something though. At any rate, the logic is that a steady, concentrated attention can be directed inward, which enhances the ability to observe one’s own mind-paving the way towards gaining profound insights. That is the rationale behind mastering the Jhanas. These are not the end in itself, but a valuable means for furthering one’s spiritual growth.

    • @drsr4560
      @drsr4560 2 роки тому

      57”-ish: For Culadasa, mindfulness is the “optimal interaction between attention and peripheral awareness.” Many ways then that sati can be applied and adapted, depending on the context and circumstances.

      The world itself is not an illusion, what this statement means is what you think the world is, is an illusion. The world out there physically is as real as your own being, however the way it is perceived by the mind, getting heavily filtered and putting labels on everything, is what we call 'illusion'.
      Meditation is trying to calm down the mind, to see through the veil of it. Only without its continuous interference would we see the reality as it is.

    I don't mean this to be snarky, but what is the point/purpose of the safron shawl? This fellow is a lay teacher, so is the ochre cloth some sort of affectation?

    • @video108video
      @video108video 7 років тому +1

      That's interesting. I've never heard of the use of a safron shawl to designate a lay teacher in the act of teaching. Which Buddhist school or lineage does this come from?

    • @video108video
      @video108video 7 років тому +1

      +Favian Lininger
      Favian, just as I suspected. I am theravadin buddhist and I have never heard of this in my entire life. I suspect this is being invented just now, with this safron shawl being used as some sort of prop to lend a degree of authority to a western audience who might be a little clueless. While it's not terribly important, it does seem a little silly frankly, that this teacher would resort to affectations to bolster his credability perhaps.

    • @video108video

      So yes favian is correct on the lineages. For me, in particular his clarity of buddhadhamma and the joy he brings, is what gives me confidence in his teachings.

    • @AtacamaHumanoid
      @AtacamaHumanoid 6 років тому +4

      Exactly why nobody can do anything anymore. Someone has to come along and gently or not-so-gently suggest anything and everything you might do is bullshit. You've been Theravadin your whole life and probably never had instruction from anyone other than a totally lay person or a totally non-lay person. It's the smallest thing to designate that he's actually a lineage-holder, not just some guy who claims to know (there are plenty of those). But, he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't, so probably best to just leave the little signifier off. People can Google him and see his lineage. Cynics always will, anyway.
