6:34 Academia was a way of distancing myself from my feelings
6:52 What has been neglected in your life?
8:16 The shadow is parts of ourselves that we find contradictory/disturbing to our values
8:57 Reluctance to engage with what we have interpsychically active
9:19 We live unlived lives -- step into the magnitude of your own journey
9:49 We rationalize, postpone, blame others, to avoid our shadows
10:53 4 ways in which shadow manifests: 1) Unconsciously in our interactions with others
    11:33 2) Projected onto others
11:58 3) Some people enter their shadows and are possessed by it
12:46 4) Make the shadow conscious to you, but then you have work to do
    14:53 Shadow-work threatens our self-concept
17:07 Some actions done out of codependence, fear of exclusion, or needing approval of others
22:18 Some people live a life where they do things only if they meet certain circumstances
22:26 Many people's basic motives and careers are to please their parents
22:52 What if you realized that your decisions are coming from your 8-year-old self
25:15 Some circumstances activate unconscious energies (trauma, insecurities)
25:40 What am I asking of others that I need to address myself?
25:55 Address your emotional needs yourself and don't dump on others
28:20 Child may internalize being unworthy of love and support,
and won't ask for or expect too much (based off parents' treatment)
30:40 Sometimes we don't speak up due to old stories (beliefs)
31:01 They interrupt the free flow of our adult capacities
32:32 How do I fit in, stay out of harm, and get my needs met?
33:15 Look at your behavioral patterns. Why do you avoid? Why do you feel things are overwhelming?
33:48 Some people marry thinking the partner will take care of / solve things
35:26 Clusters of self-defeating energies (what does it make me do or keep me from doing)
35:38 You have to do what you're afraid of doing. Where are your feelings blocked or stuck?
38:59 Most people don't have permission to have their own life
39:23 What rewards you with inner sense of satisfaction and purpose?
39:40 Sooner or later we have to live in a different way (in order to improve)
41:02 Why are you here? In service to what?
41:36 The shadow is parts of ourselves we don't want to deal with
43:58 The trickster energy overthrows our expectations.
It forces us to look at things and our behavioral patterns in a new way
48:00 The nature of nature is change, but the ego is intimidated by change and ambiguity
50:08 Go with change and embrace it
50:37 Neurosis is when we're allied against nature
52:57 "Not my will but Thine"
53:32 Lift off yourself and others hidden agendas
54:34 Children create stories to help them survive and function,
but they often continue (unconsciously) into adulthood
55:27 What is the force or idea behind my action? Emotional premises drive behavior
58:50 Every day, large choices are up for grabs.
How much of your life is being governed by protective patterns?
59:38 D.W. Winnicott: acquired behaviors, false self, to protect ourselves and get our needs met
1:00:07 Your life is being defined by your old beliefs/patterns which were once helpful but now harmful
1:00:29 Attitudes and behaviors we've depended upon are now standing in the way of our growth/development,
but it's uncomfortable to let them go because they expose our vulnerabilities and fears

Love this guy. Did 6 years of postdoctoral training in psychoanalysis and only recently started reading Hollis. He pretty much sums up what I took away from those 6 years in a couple of his thin, but very insightful books.

If you’ve popped into the comments to decide whether to watch this because you’re *reluctantly ready* to do shadow work, and really commit to it, I’m here to tell you this conversation is a powerful invitation to move forward in spite of your fears or doubts. It will give you a clearer understanding of why shadow work is so important and so worthy - and why it’s our responsibility to ourselves, our loved ones, and the world, to honor this most noble work.
“What you’ve become is now your chief obstacle.” “Where there is a block or where you’re stuck is a summons to courage and accountability.” ~ Dr. Hollis
Thank you Dr. Hollis and Freddy Drabble, for an enlightening, informative, and deeply inspiring discussion. ✨🌱

The best discussion i have heard about the shadow. It might be very fruitful for a duscussion to happen between Iain McGilchrist and Dr Hollis.

The Shadow will always be important to discuss because it also has sociological implications in modern-day social issues and "scapegoats". Even the Hegelian idea of the "master/slave" dialectic is basically the Conscious/Shadow. The Master looks at the Slave seeing all the parts of himself he is afraid of and hates. The Slave sees all the contemptible tyranny -- that he has the capacity for within himself -- within the Master.

Incredible interview. I honestly needed to hear this today, it's synchronistic actually. Please please I would love you to have another conversation with Bernardo, the first one was one of the best he's been in. Also, I know this is kind of outside (or maybe not) of your type of interview, but I think it could be quite interesting for you to invite Rupert Spira here.
Anyways, much love and support! Thanks for this 🙏

For having been 4yrs in pscho-analysis, I come to the conclusion 10yrs on that it’s a double edged sword. Yes, I learned alot about myself and my shadows but also learned about my parents, family, friends and relationships. I’ve had to step away to detach and not be constantly overwhelmed by what my environment was. I now feel lonely, spurs of anger and deep sadness. I now have to find a new path, new relationships that would soothe this huge black hole. 😢

It’s hard to understand western psychology sometimes being Asian. Our culture is so heavily focused on the family unit and doing things for the greater good…

It's about creating a healthy balance btwn individualist (Western) verse collective (Asian, Chinese, african) cultures as too much of either is detrimental to being authentic and growth.

This world is all shadows, which is why it is so dif to grasp the full concept of shadow.
Everything around us is shadow. which makes light bringers like Jung to appear as evil. My task is to reveal Jung in his genius but also to esxpose where he has shadow. Jung desires I do so.
Jung desires that someone, ME, carries his touch of gnosis.
Since no one else wants to, it falls on me.
I need another 5 yrs of critical studies in Jung, God willing my health will be restored and I will carryu Jung's torch.
I am against the old Jungains and The New Jungians,
'My task is to bring Jung to light and also to correct his passages where he needs revision, additions.
Like I say 5_ yrs I will be ready to share my encounters with CG.
Yes I have actualencounters, JUng calls this active imagination, But I will retag this as
Active Encounters,, as if we continue to use Imagination,, we can not abbreviate to AI, as that implies artifical intelligence. So AE = Active Encounter
So whenever you see AE, this is the new tag for Jung';s active imagination.
    AE.

This is what an abusive narcissist will tell a target victim to do shadow work. They parrot everyone.
I personally do not need shadow work. I'm a happy woman with hopes and goals to achieve. God assists me.

What is everyone else’s understanding of “how” to integrate the shadow?
We just “grow out” of it?

Understand what the shadow makes you do, and keeps you from doing, and then you have the recipe for growth.

Making an unconscious entity aware of its existence is quite a radical form of introspective psychotherapy, manifesting this unconsciousness as a conscious aware of its own probable malevolence and malfeasance isn’t what I wanted the conversation to evolve into, such a dark dangerous topic should not be taken lightly, how can this be helpful, I love performing but this is quite a different beast. I can’t begin to have a clue on where to be helpful, contrary to everything said why was this conversation a first principal’s topic at all. . Why couldn’t there have been a real man to man discussion on this. Why so much deception and manipulation here between a man and this conversation , Why in gods name was this a first principles awareness and why has this trickster allowed into existence. For all the troubling painful issues to impart on a free spirit this is the worst…..Considering how sensitive they discussed the topic I’m surprised there is a functioning vehicle here for my use. To be clear this isn’t necessary or desirable by way of a conversation. Its just so painful and uncomfortable I don’t know what to do with myself. The topic is stale stagnant and pitiful and should’ve been outlawed. Thank you Rising Son records for the macroscopic conversation , and thanks to my mind for making something out of this real nothingness burger sandwich. Really Should have had a spare set of keys handy. Would’ve been so much more fun.

At risk of sounding like an imbecile, is that from a personal perspective and or an instant reaction? Or can you cite it, because it is so brilliant I can’t help but admire it? Nice one!!

Why are you donating to abused children and women money earned from a movie about men? You're not acknowledging the numerous abused boys who become injured men, plus all the men abused wives and girlfriends as well as by the system in general.
