I Meditated for 10 Days Nonstop - My Vipassana Retreat Experience (life-changing)

  • Vipassana is a powerful meditation technique that teaches one to be aware of one's bodily sensations from a non-judgmental place. Originally taught by the Buddha over 2500 years ago to aid others to a more harmonious, peaceful, and compassionate life, there are now over 300 retreat centers worldwide of which thousands of students attend each year.
This video portrays my experience of a 10 day vipassana course. It definitely was not easy, but ultimately I feel I have learned a method of meditation that will bring more balance to my mind and make me a better person overall as I continue to practice everyday.

Hey all! This community is designed to foster authentic connection among those on the path of personal and spiritual growth. I strongly believe in the idea of power in numbers. Each week, we will host connection calls designed to cultivate friendships among those seeking growth. There will be other events too on there, such as meditation hour, sharing resources, text chat, etc. The community was created in early April 2024, and I am hoping to have the weekly friendship calls up and running by late April! Your participation in these would be huge! Especially in the beginning stages when the community is just getting off the ground. I hope to see you in there!

We never hear “outside” our selves. Vibration hits our ears and changes to electrical/ chemical sensations. This is then interpreted by our brain. So by taking that out of the 10 days we are left with our monkey mind. Which makes itself know in no uncertain ways. We then become more aware of our lack of silence. This applies to all the senses. By reducing the noise and developing our awarness we hopefully will reduce the monopoly of the inner voice/ verbal and visual imagery on our life.

In the 70s I followed an Indian teacher who had been silent for 30 0r more years. I was young and inspired. I developed a routine of waking at 3am and would meditate for 3 hrs. Then I would go to work. Then at night I would sit for another 2 hrs. I did this for about 3 years. In year two I added a complete silence where I would communicate with a chalk board. This silence went on for 7 months and when I broke the silence, I still maintained silence on Wed and on Sunday. This discipline combined with a vegetarian and chaste life was transforming.

@@WyethSterling To speak of your inner experiences is a sure way for them to come to abrupt stop. That's why I have a spiritual mentor who I can freely talk to for advice. Your question did made me think of my past, street kid at 14, and where and what I've experienced, now a the ripe age of 70. Wouldn't change a thing, including all the hardships. Yet after everything, I'm still a work in progress.

I sent off my application two weeks ago and yesterday received an email saying the enrollment had been filled and I was on the waitlist. My reaction was completely calm and my mind immediately began looking forward to increasing my meditation time at home, practicing more lengthy periods of sitting cross-legged and spending more time in silence. I don't know what the future will be but I plan on packing my bag and being as ready as possible if and when I'm accepted into a Vipassana course. All the best to you in your future endeavours and congratulations on starting your online community. Love & Blessings.

Yes I read the comments. And it is true That there are many paths to Truth. And we are not made in a way so all will go on same path Though our goals are same and one .
Well many years back I did this 10 days course. And it was great .initially tough but gradually we get habituated.I felt peace and calm
But it wasn't my path .Now for almost 15years I am on a different path and am happy to follow it .
Meditation is universal.and we all will reach that goal one day whichever path we travel
Best wishes to all spiritual seekers .

These great teachers dont give teaching of bookish knowledge or forced faith but they have practical realisation of self.

Goenka does give some more “bookish” knowledge during his discourses at these retreats, but you are right the purpose is mostly to serve realization of self which is beyond anything a book can give you

Thank you for the excellent summary of your experience. I knew little about this type of retreat, so I'm very thankful for your honest insight. I'm very similar to you in that my mind jumps around a lot and I'm often reacting vs. acting! I'm definitely going to consider attending one of these retreats. 🙏

he 8th and 9th day of the course are known as Maitri Day, which is dedicated to learning compassion and using the focus gained in the previous 7 days to promote world peace and generate compassion. Although we are all taught to have compassion, it is often not practiced. However, on the 8th and 9th day, you undergo a transformative experience. I still chant the prayer they sing, which doesn’t talk about any god or yourself. The sole focus is on other beings and their well-being. It’s the song of compassion.

Wyeth, I am so impressed by you. What a wonderful, detailed and informative explanation of your experience. I tried a Vipassana retreat in 2019 and only made it until day four. I feel a great amount of regret and failure, and one day may attempt it again. Although, like you said, it's extremely difficult. I'm so happy you got to experience it and for the positive benefits it has given you. Thanks for this video.

Nice experience and very well described. I was interested in somebody other than me taking about Vipassana. Definitely one of the best experience I ever done in my life. Don't know if I would do it again tho, was very difficult to complete it. It opened new realities on my life, I know teach how to meditate to my clients. 10 days is very long in my opinion, 10 min a day would do the work 80% of the time...
Good luck for your channel. Keep going!

    Very thoroughly and chill.
And yes, Vipassana is hard work, but uts totally worth it, imo.
If I would win the lottery, I maybe would even start my own Vipassana centers.
Because here in Germany, it takes so long to get a free place for a retreat.

Your experience was clearly a top-tenth-percentile (at least) success case in trialling the technique. I hope you go back again soon, or perhaps serve on a course - it will be a pleasure to hear your response after a second experience.
I also humbly recommend you strongly consider two hours of meditation per day, or at least two half-hours; you might find that time constraints aren't as solid as they appear.
    Be happy!

Sounds like your on a good path now! This retreat is called a boot camp of meditation it’s not always been beneficial for people. They are researching the negative effects that can happen at Brown University. Cheetah house. Many come back with difficulty. Sounds like your on a good path now! You might not need this retreat. I was sorta talked into my first retreat and looking back I don’t recommend it to people. Don’t discount your own hard work to get where you are now. That’s awesome!! Good luck!

When your back is good !! Try to attempt for the second course by sitting straight by keeping the spine straight!!
You will notice many things !!
The thoughts will be come and go like a passing clouds these thoughts appear when we sit a relax mode !!
These are just Shankaras they come and go and we shouldn't give to power to those thoughts!!
Hope one day in your entire life to reach Moksha !!

Super inspirational dude.. I really resonate with your story because I have a similar background of weed, porn and bad food addictions, which I all quit in the last year. Currently going through a bit of a though time tho and this sounds like something that would really help to be more present in the moment. Something that a lot of people are trying to achieve, but is diffecult to combine with everyday stressors. Even when meditating for a short while everyday... I heard you talking about increased pressure on the chest leading up to the retreat. Is this something that you have regularely? And how is that after the retreat? I'm dealing with that as well.

    • @WyethSterling
      @WyethSterling  8 місяців тому +1

There aren’t too many better things to do to transcend addictive tendencies than taking a 10 day vipassana with intention. If you have strong determination going into the retreat i think this could help you a lot. The pressure in my chest was mostly due to anxiety because I knew it would be an intense retreat. I still get this when I feel very anxious but I don’t feel that level of anxiety often, maybe only a couple of times a year
