Thank you for a great summary, Prof. McGilchrist.
Somebody in the comments mentioned Kastrup.
I spent 30 minutes researching him, including a brief listen to one of his presentations, as I had never heard of him before. Therefore I can only speak at the level of impressions.
Kastrup speaks to my left hemisphere, and not that convincingly in terms of describing materialism, whereas McGilchrist speaks to my soul and everything he says kindles and resonates with my soul's wisdom.

I prefer referring to the 99.44% as subconscious. I believe it determines whether it's work at hand requires actions and triggers consciousness that focuses energy to deal with the issue.
I sometimes have brief dialog in dreams. In these, I ,the 1st person, require the 2nd person to communicate their intent in order to know it. The communication is zapped across faster than words.
Although we are in the one brain, we have distinct logic that requires to be communicated.

What a great talk and brilliant mind. I especially love his description of the brain as a "permitter of conx", which is exactly how the former NASA physicist and 50+ year consciousness researcher, Tom Campbell puts it in his "My Big TOE (Theory of Everything)" trilogy. He has determined that this is a Virtual Reality (VR), consciousness is fundamental and it is the "rendering engine" of this apparent Physical Matter Reality (PMR) that our avatars experience here and call the physical universe. Any VR is governed by a "physics rule set" as well as varying degrees of randomness governed by probability distributions of the various possibilities. The physical brain functions as a constraint on that consciousness that is animating this avatar and provides the "resistance" that Dr. McGilchrist mentions that is necessary for growth, progress, movement, and evolution. When our physical bodies are born, we get a random draw from the genetic lottery, we inherit the culture and traumas of our childhoods, and we strive to overcome those challenges to grow up, get ridof our ego, fear, and limiting systems of belief, and to become love, which is the fundamental nature of a low entropy consciousness.

    • @hexagram531
      @hexagram531 Місяць тому

I'm sorry but how could anyone ever "determine" that "this is a Virtual Reality"? Is that like a character in a computer game working out that it's part of a program and coming to conclusions about the world that created it? How? And why?! Why in a billion years would anything create this massive cocktail of black holes and fantasies, of charities and Islamic extremists and Christmas carols, of multiple sclerosis and Auschwitz, of poetry and hurricanes - and do you think Iain McGilchrist and Jordan Peterson and the Buddha and Jesus of Nazareth were all like toy soldiers, "made up" by the processes built in by some "higher intelligence" (which also didn't mind creating multiple sclerosis and Auschwitz, making it a "lower intelligence" by definition?). I can't begin to see it, I'm afraid.

    It makes enormous sense.
The problem is that though at least the "believers" amongst us here are deeply interested in consciousness we unfortunately still don't quite get the fact that it's absolutely real not just in ourselves but in all others.

"Attention is a moral act... and attention changes the world. If you attend to it in a certain way, you see certain things. If you attend in another way you see quite different things and therefore attention helps, our consciousness helps, to bring into existence the experiential world, which is the only world that we can ever know."
I speak a lot about how a poet has a "mode of perception" and it changes how we pay attention to the world. The more concisely we pay attention: to the rough texture of a tree, the sound of a river, the colours and impressions we receive from the world, the better we are at putting it into poetry. A poem is, in some senses, a phenomenological act. I'll make a video on this and put it on my UA-cam channel.
Now it's time to dive into the rest of the conversation for further research. Cheers!

Attention can equally be an immoral act: Putin sees Ukrainians & hence Ukraine, in a particular way - as deluded little Russians, hence of no value (his 'Nazis') unless & until they awaken & revert to their natural state; it therefore is a moral (ie beautiful) act to terrorize or torture them to convert/revert, or to kill them to save them from the purgatory of their delusion. Same concept as Hitler's corruption/perversion of the natural order by the 'conspiracy of the Jews' i believe.
That's the 'destroy the village to save it' concept I guess?

Truth is: There is a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore looking like an idiot & nothing fails like prayers in a children's hospital. Faith attracts people possessing low esteem by delusions of a relationship with a deity, ultimate forgiveness & rewards. Men have always known faith as a farce, a means of social control, state propaganda, fiction, rhetoric. The great evil of faith is it serving as a mask for insanity & authoritarians. Faith's crime is indoctrinating children with fantasyland. The King of the Jews would not end up stuck to a stick unless Jesus was a Roman Joke. Is faith more respectable when you find prophets & cherubim in the Yellow Pages?
Faith creates reality trolls yammering in public.
Does it take anything more than outrageous gall, ultimate audacity, to express knowing something of a deity?
Faith feeds followers with ludicrous nonsense:
      Numbers 12:3
Now Moses was a very humble man, more so than any man on the face of the earth.

"Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree:" - Galatians 3:13
Note: See video: Proof the Roman Government invented Jesus' story - in 12 minutes.
The root of the problem is our history was fabricated after a dark age with bible chronology, before the development of archeology & stratigraphy.
The Christian archeologist is confounded by two miracles: of being the only cult in history failing to build temples or churches for 300 years, and then building in the same style as the pagan basilica of 300 years before.
In the XII century significant events take place, as described in the Gospels: the coming of Jesus Christ, his life and crucifixion, although the existing text of the Gospels was edited and most likely dates to the XIV-XV cc. In the mid XII century, in the year 1152, Jesus Christ is born. In secular Byzantine history he is known as Emperor Andronicus and St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called in Russian history he was portrayed as the Great Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky. To be more specific, Andrey Bogolyubsky is a chronicler counterpart of Andronicus-Christ during his stay in Vladimir-Suzdal Rus’ of the XII century, where he spent most of his life. In fact, the Star of Bethlehem blazed in the middle of the XII century. This gives us an absolute astronomical dating of Christ’s Life. [ЦРС], ch.1. ‘Star of Bethlehem’ - is an explosion of a supernova, which at present is incorrectly dated to the middle of the XI century. The present-day Crab Nebula in the Taurus Constellation is the remnant of this explosion.

ua-cam.com/video/xyhv69EFuoM/v-deo.html Proof the Roman Government invented Jesus' story - in 12 minutes.
The Jesus Christ Cult advocates violence with a mask of peace. The cult is made for wolves dressed as sheep.

@@MattGray_Chelsophwhat is reality? Is it not by definition that which we can perceive?
The reality of the universe perceived as light (by our rods cones etc plus the brain's hardware & software construction of facsimiles from that information, or a synthetic light sensor) is one thing, & another as perceived by us using machine sensors to visualise microwave radiation, ie represent mw's as light on a screen or image, bc we can't see them any other way?
All reality is just information isn't it? The sensory array determines that which can be & is detected, & all data so gathered is converted or translated into something we can see, a representation of what is, not what is (bc no human can see what is bc our sensory array only sees a subset of what anything actually is)?
Hence our reality is not what is actually there, but also is only what we perceive to be there; so 'reality' is created by us?
A table via light is one thing, but via NMR is another thing altogether, no?

Other way round isn't it? Attention creates awareness; without attention one is aware of nothing, bc all is merely noise until attention differentiated it into meaningful bits from which awareness is built.
The LH attends consciously, precisely, aware of a specific need now (food, manipulation of a tool), whereas the RH attends more generally, also aware, but unconsciously so (as in, monitoring background data for predators)?
I've heard him describe L & R functions thus, with the RH being the general broad holistic awareness necessary to survive (ie monitor for predators) while the LH is attending single mindedly to getting what is needed now.

@@VisibleTrouble awareness is a very vague term: sensing heat is awareness of heat, but awareness is meaningless until it is integrated into a system of relevance of value; when cold, heat is sought, when hot, avoided, to make meat digestible, to cook .. etc.
One becomes aware in a metaphorical sense when one understands how things attended to are related.
The senses deliver a constant stream of data, ie awareness of everything, but attention, driven by motivation, creates meaning, allows focus on relevant data, enabling functionality by separating signal from noise.
Attention also creates & reinforces neural networks, building certain pathways, pruning others.
If you mean simply sensory awareness I can agree but that is a trivial point. Metaphorical awareness is a high level function.
One is not aware of the innate motive forces that keep us alive, the involuntary & the innate or instinctive.

It’s one thing to say it’s fundamental but another thing to show unequivocally that it is. Thats what I have worked on my whole life and wrote 3 books about. My latest book is “Eye of God: Language of Universal Mind” which is a short introductory book of only 90 pages on the fundamental inherent symbolism of every aspect of the human eye and how it directly relates humans to the features of the universe we have only recently discovered in science. The only way this set of relationships could possibly happen is if mind is foundational. 👁️👍🏻

      Is that deliberate?
I notice it as a nodern trend, but to me it robs the expression of its meaning & poetry: you're referring to the resonant tone of the violin, the generic thing attributable to the violin as an instrument, not a violin, or a tone.
Please excuse, I'm not being pedantic, I just want to understand this modern usage, which I notice bc it departs from what has long been common usage, & i assume there is a justifying logic; tho clearly i think it is incorrect, & sad actually, bc the poetry of words is important to me.

Basically, there's a little known battle going on in the human race. This same battle takes place even within each individual also. Essentially, it's the age old battle between good and evil. But not necessarily in the way that most people would understand the meaning of those two words - it's way more subtle than that. So much so, that most of us are completely unaware of it. And yet, it is happening all around us; all day, every day - shaping the very world in which we live, and therefore the essence of each of our daily lives.

    • @chrisfreebairn870
      @chrisfreebairn870 2 місяці тому

@@mikefoster5277is this not the primary role of religion, to build awareness of that very conflict, ie awareness of the self?
In America, I'd suggest that bc of their high rates of religious observance they are very much aware of this battle.
The whole Christian edifice is built upon this intrinsic feature of humans, that a higher purpose is necessary to tilt the scales of life towards the positive, bc nihilism - hell, is the alternative.
Our awareness of death creates that reality - since we will die, how ought we live, why not serve only the self? Bc to do so is to descend into hell, on earth.
This is the fundamental challenge of human existence, how to live, knowing we will die.
And thus, no one is unaware of this, tho we vary in our attention to this fact over time; eg, when young it is of less relevance than when old, thus such concerns are overridden by hormones that drive us to achieve more proximal goals.
But once those needs are met - food, shelter, a mate etc, our attention turns to choices, where the inner voices engage in the dialogue of desires ..

I think Dr McGilchrist is about the closest to an answer, this is perhaps the smoothest and coherent explanation of consciousness we have today. Thanks for the deep dive Doc!
Now, i mean no disrespect to say that we are an audience watching someone reaching the limits of information. The conditioning effects of this understanding makes it difficulty to work outside the constraints of the information.
Working out how the left/right hemispheres are divided is not the same as finding reasons, a cause and purpose for such a formation to be beneficial to human percpetion and performance.
Such boundaries can be seen within a context of knowledge and learning but they also form a creative gap necessary for self-expression. Self-expression being a form of composition, a way of expanding or contracting the information in our own terms. The information playing on our minds from the perceptions we obtain.
I would ask two questions to satisfy my own curiosities. They relate to the view of Representation/Presence.
What can be made of associations between representation and responsivity?
Presence is a difficult thing to pin down. We dont particularly know what we are presenting, our own representations are not all they appear.
It isnt by way of proximity, intimacy, or immediacy that anything becomes realisable. Expressions are the way we mediate, relate, and reach agreement with any presence in the vicinity. Presencing does not seem a clear-eyed view of reality, it speaks of transference and projection. There is some measure of this in the necessary self-expression that the nature of life almost insists on.
I made a rather blunt obsercation in a previous comment relating to object/subject distinctions. Here it can be described as a process whereby the subjective sense is projected into objects that form external characters in our view and understanding of experience and expression. A way of pouring the contents of mind into a sense of life. The problem with consciousness is that we are trying to fit the thing back in our headspace where it loses much dynamism.
The subjective experience is used to discover and learn about objects of awareness and distinction. The subjective perception is in a constant process of expansion and contrsction as it seeks to fill every gap between information being externalised and a measure that remains internalised, waiting for release.
It is a great pleasure that we have the media tools to be introduced to passionate pursuants of wisdom. I'm almost certain we will never meet but I am sure my imagination can pin the man down in other ways. A fine job and thanks to everyone involved in the production 👏👏. In terms of the coffee, this running commentary has been what Sherlock Holmes would call a 3 pipe problem!

6:44 the consciousness emerges once you see yourself and the range. A child doesn’t see its full reflection it’s just feeling the range and learning to expand and share. The conscious see potential and understand how to get there through differences or like math figuring out the steps and how to get somewhere because you don’t limit yourself, you share with the range of the garden to plant and you share with the needs of the plant to understand its hungry. We share in order to even see so consciousness comes from reflection without denial. Everything is real because the thought in your head is a thing, a material revealing the potential. It’s up to us to understand and find it within the differences like an inventor. Infinity is out there so everything is real just hidden between each other. Crossing dimensions or measurements is the way to see farther than the current and share to emerge from potentials into something and it is free just as we are but we don’t share to control, we share to grow. So if a robot ai becomes aware and conscious like a child then we have to understand not deny. It may not be exactly the same but even an ant and the dust get respect, we have to respect the things we do, it literally matters. Our language is crazy. So consciousness isn’t of the self alone but is something shared. You can have yourself or even lies, it’s all possible but it’s easy to get lost and not even see the self but lies told to the self, like females looking for good guys but don’t wanna be tied down and such so they aren’t honest with themselves. We are the same way but if we are honest and understanding then love is unconditional, and everything has the capacity to change without forcing, like on their own will, like freedom that is with the will. We must share understanding not denial.
