The Ugly Truth About the SDA View of the Cross

  • From our larger presentation on the SDA Pioneers, we dive into the ugly truth about the Adventist view of the cross and challenge the historical and theological claims that have shaped this controversial doctrine. W.H. Littlejohn, an early SDA pioneer, once argued that sins were not atoned for at Calvary-a claim that stands contrary to biblical teachings on atonement and reconciliation.

    The Gospel of Jesus Christ:
Man is a sinner (Romans 3:23; 1 John 1:8) and our sin has separated us from our Maker (Isaiah 59:2). In His grace, God entered into His own creation in the person of Jesus Christ (John 1:1-14; Col. 1:19), born of a virgin (Matt. 1:23), and lived a perfect and sinless life, fulfilling all the Law’s demands (2 Cor. 5:21; Matt. 5:17), on a mission by God the Father to save sinners from condemnation (John 3:16-18, 6:37-40). He paid the penalty for sin which is death (Romans 6:23) and bore the sins of His people in His body on a cross (1 Peter 2:24), making propitiation by His blood (Romans 3:25). He died, was buried, and resurrected in the same body He died in on the third day for our justification (1 Cor. 15, Romans 4:25; Luke 24:39). By a living faith (James 2:18) in the Person and Work of Jesus (Romans 10:9-10), God graciously declares a person righteous (Romans 4:5), they are reconciled to their Creator (Romans 5:10-11), given Christ’s righteousness in full (Phil. 3:8-9), sealed with the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13), and have peace with God (Romans 5:1). They are born again of the Spirit (1 John 5:1, Titus 3:5), adopted into His family (Eph. 4:5-7), and are granted eternal resurrection life in Jesus Christ (1 John 5:11), set free to do good works that please Him (Eph. 2:10; 1 John 2:3-4). Jesus will physically return one day to judge the living and the dead (1 Peter 4:5; Acts 24:15; John 5:24-5), throwing the wicked out of His Kingdom (Matt. 13:41-3), but His people will be spared from the wrath to come (1 Thess. 1:10) to dwell in union with God forever (Rev. 21:3).

Off topic, but I tell ya, yours, Solberg's & Academy Apologia have slowly become my top 3 favorite channels! 👈😃👍
Significant because, as a "regular" Christian (converted solely by reading the NT), I was definitely resistant to learning about the wiles & weirdness of yet another "Christian" cult (I was already forced to learn about Mormonism due to having a Mormon cousin 👀😳😱🤢🤮), but the more I learn the more I see how vitally important it is to deal promptly & swiftly with the vile & insidious heresies of this sect that has literally slipped under the Christian warning radar to infiltrate the holy flock of God! 😮 Oh how "normal seeming" this sect appears from the outside! With their normal seeming church buildings & their normal seeming preachers intoning their normal seeming sermons in their normal seeming preachy cadences... 👀 Simply diabolical 😥😢😭 It must be met. It must be resisted. It must be exposed. 🙏✝️🧎‍♀️

@@vusimngomezulu2500 HI. Your question is similar to this when a person asks, "Which church is the true church?" he or she is often asking which denomination is correct. Is the true church Baptist? Episcopalian? Pentecostal? It's a good question, but it's important to understand that the church is not a visible building or organization. Rather, the true church is the family of all those who have faith in Jesus Christ and are born again by the power of the Holy Spirit (John 3:3).
The New Testament defines the church in two distinct ways. First, the church comprises all believers. This is often called the universal church. Second, the New Testament also uses the word church in the sense of a local group of believers who meet together to worship God. For example, there is the church at Jerusalem (Acts 8:1), the church at Ephesus (Revelation 2:1), and the church which met in Nympha's house (Colossians 4:15). Together, saved members of local churches are part of the universal church.
Of course, being a member of a Bible-teaching local church is important (Hebrews 10:25). But more important than joining a church is knowing you are born again (2 Corinthians 13:5). No church can save you. Only Jesus saves, by grace through faith in His death and resurrection (Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 10:9-10).

Christ is both the sacrifice and high priest of the true sanctuary as recorded in Hebrews. This would mean Christ would have to fulfill his role in the sanctuary for all atonement to be complete. The Bible is honest here and told us that the earthly sanctuary was made from the pattern of the one in heaven. Why would there be a sanctuary in heaven if God had no purpose for it?

@@levangiledestroisanges A few days since, I was pleading with the Lord for light in regard to my duty. In the night I dreamed I was in the carriage, driving, sitting at the right hand. Father was in the carriage, seated at my left hand. He was very pale, but calm and composed. “Why Father,” I exclaimed, “I am so happy to have you by my side once more! I have felt that half of me was gone. Father, I saw you die; I saw you buried. Has the Lord pitied me and let you come back to me again, and we work together as we used to?”
He looked very sad. He said, “The Lord knows what is best for you and for me. My work was very dear to me. We have made a mistake. We have responded to urgent invitations of our brethren to attend important meetings. We had not the heart to refuse. These meetings have worn us both more than we were aware. Our good brethren were gratified, but they did not realize that in these meetings we took upon us greater burdens than at our age we could safely carry. They will never know the result of this long-continued strain upon us. God would have had them bear the burdens we have carried for years. Our nervous energies have been continuously taxed, and then our brethren misjudging our motives and not realizing our burdens have wakened the action of the heart. I have made mistakes, the greatest of which was in allowing my sympathies for the people of God to lead me to take work upon me which others should have borne.
“Now, Ellen, calls will be made as they have been, desiring you to attend important meetings, as has been the case in the past. But lay this matter before God and make no response to the most earnest invitations. Your life hangs as it were upon a thread. You must have quiet rest, freedom from all excitement and from all disagreeable areas. We might have done a great deal for years with our pens, on subjects the people need that we have had light upon and can present before them, which others do not have. Thus you can work when your strength returns, as it will, and you can do far more with your pen than with your voice.”
He looked at me appealingly and said, “You will not neglect these cautions, will you, Ellen? Our people will never know under what infirmities we have labored to serve them because our lives were interwoven with the progress of the work, but God knows it all. I regret that I have felt so deeply and labored unreasonably in emergencies, regardless of the laws of life and health. The Lord did not require us to carry so heavy burdens and many of our brethren so few. We ought to have gone to the Pacific Coast before, and devoted our time and energies to writing. Will you do this now? Will you, as your strength returns, take your pen and write out these things we have so long anticipated, and make haste slowly? There is important matter which the people need. Make this your first business. You will have to speak some to the people, but shun the responsibilities which have borne us down.”
“Well,” said I, “James, you are always to stay with me now and we will work together.” Said he, “I stayed in Battle Creek too long. I ought to have gone to California more than one year ago. But I wanted to help the work and institutions at Battle Creek. I have made a mistake. Your heart is tender. You will be inclined to make the same mistakes I have made. Your life can be of use to the cause of God. Oh, those precious subjects the Lord would have had me bring before the people, precious jewels of light!”
I awoke. But this dream seemed so real. Now you can see and understand why I feel no duty to go to Battle Creek for the purpose of shouldering the responsibilities in General Conference. I have no duty to stand in General Conference. The Lord forbids me. That is enough. -Letter 17, 1881.7

What W.H. Littlejohn is arguing is the concept of ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED doctrine that comes from the Devil itself. The blood of Christ remit the sins of the past as well as the present and future sins only if you asked for forgiveness. There is no such thing as sins remitted once and for all of a person’s life . That’s why a Christian life is a continuous battle against sin till that person’s dies. Justification is instantaneous like the thief on the cross, but his life ended there as well that’s why he was forever saved . But for most of us , only those who will endures to the end will be saved.

@@samuelbongcayao3733 Do you believe in the eternal security of the believer (OSAS). Its a Biblical doctrine to believe.
If" one is truly saved, then he or she is always saved, eternally secure in the everlasting arms of God. This does NOT give anyone a license to sin (Romans 3:31). However, there's no such thing as a believer who doesn't sin every day, in one form or another. Christians at best are people, and people at best are sinners.
Most professed "Christians" nowadays have never been saved. They have churchianity without Christianity.
They worship God falsely, not having truth (John 4:24), or the Spirit which only a born-again Christian can possess. The teaching of "Once Saved, Always Saved" frustrates many people, because they misunderstand it to mean that a person can believe on Jesus and live in gross immorality at the same time, with no remorse, no conviction. Nothing could be further from the truth of God's Word! Hebrews 16:5-8 plainly teaches that God chastises His children when they sin. And carefully notice that they DO SIN, which is why God must chastise them.
"Once Saved, Always Saved" only applies to those who truly have been born-again. No believer can ever lose what was not theirs to give in the first place. Salvation is of God alone (John 1:12,13). Man's part is simply to trust upon the Lord Jesus Christ to have his or her sins forgiven. Some people may prefer to say, "If Saved, Always Saved." But in essence, both statement are equivalent. The big concern here is to examine your heart and ask yourself, "Am I a born-again Christian?"
Are you saved? If you are enjoying living in sin, with no guilt before God, and you don't see yourself as a hell-deserving rotten sinner, then you've not saved my friend. Repentance brings about a change of mind concerning one's sins. Although forsaking one's sins is NOT a part of saving-faith; coming before God as a guilty sinner in need of forgiveness most certainly is. We are sinners and Jesus is the Savior.

God being Omniscient , knows exactly as to who will be saved and those who will be lost even before He created the world. Their number cannot changed , because God can never be wrong. But His being omniscient does not predetermined a person’s saved or lost status. God simply knows the choices a person makes either to accept Jesus and follow him or accept and later on reject Jesus Christ and not follow him. So it would be presumptuous for a person to say with certainty that ; HE IS SAVED ! Because as Prophet Jeremiah said “ The heart is deceitful above all things, who can KNOW it “ . 17:9 . Our assurance is in Christ Jesus who shed his blood for us and is determined to saved us. We are still on the battlefield and we falter or sinned as often as we are , and the blood of Jesus Christ is always fresh to cleanse us. You are trying to interpret Adventist doctrine through your own theology (mindset, particularly) which is why you can't understand it.
“Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?”
    - Psalms 77:13 (KJV)
Salvation is not an event. It is a process. Just as salvation is progressive and a process, so we must walk with Jesus through the sanctuary.
When Christ began his ministry, it was pointed out by John the Baptist, "Behold the Lamb of God". John was not merely making an observation, but was pointing out that salvation depended on accepting that role that Jesus portrayed in the sanctuary service. Any other understanding would be a false gospel.
The blood of Christ initiated atonement. And also when atonement is received, atonement is complete, in so far as it is sufficient for the time in which it is received. But as a process, atonement has not yet been completed. For the believer, at any time, the need for atonement can be satisfied, - complete, and yet at the same time not complet-ed, for salvation is a journey.
Only as Christ leads us through the sanctuary can our atonement be completed. As it was for the believer, so it was for the church corporate. The leaders of the church must also follow Christ through his sanctuary.
To follow Christ through the sanctuary, meant that the believer, and the church corporate must hold on to the scripture as the sole authority, and bear witness to the truth, and maintain his communion with God, in prayer. This was of course, the meaning of the table of show bread, the candlesticks, and the altar of incense. As Christ revealed the light, so the reformers must lead their congregations in the same light. The believer continues to receive atonement as they continue to receive the light.
As they receive more light, their need of Christ as a sin bearer continues. His atonement on the cross is still needed, for the light reveals the defects in character that must be atoned for.
The final stage of atonement in the individual believers life, and in the church as a whole, is the receiving of the Law, not merely in part, but as it is revealed to them in its fullness by Christ himself, the Law being the representation of his character. (And more light is revealed as we walk in the light). To honor any other Christ is to honour a false gospel.
The law must not just be received, but must become part of the believer, as one who reflects Christ's image. Only as this true understanding and impartation of Christ's character becomes reality, only then can the sanctuary itself be vindicated for the role that it plays in the believer's life. When this happens, then it can be said that the whole of Christ's character has been imparted to the believer, just as the whole sanctuary represented the whole character of Christ.
Sacrificial atonement began with the Lamb of God. The ceremonial atonement (or the Day of Atonement), is the crowning symbol of the individual believer receiving full atonement, and also the church corporate as the church receives the full meaning of the Law (as in 1844), and purges all that is false from itself, honouring Christ in all his fullness, as it has now becomes apparent to them. And this is the judgment, the determining of all who are the true followers of Christ, and who are not.
To follow any other Christ, or to refuse to follow Christ through the sanctuary, is to follow a false gospel.
