Absolutely. I argue that far too many people forget about how legendary Britain once was with gaming. To many, this era might as well of not happened. An absolute shame that many will just mention Nintendo and Sega. Sinclair revolutionised Britain in 1982 with 16k/48k, a massive era indeed. I do my best to make these systems as relevant as I can.
I played the spectrum version to death. It didn't have the silly directional attacking controls the arcade had which returned for double dragon 2. Interestingly the in game music didn't work on the spectrum plus 3. Also the 48k version didn't have the throw move only the 128k
The ZX Spectrum version of this game was a classic and this is a good pick for best conversion. I had all three Renegade titles as a kid, including the very weird Renegade 3, which I didn't like so much!
I first played it, well, the Japanese version, Nekketsu kouha Kunio-kun, in 2010s on a Famiclone a friend got. It aged SO WELL, easily my fav 8-bit game. The best attack is running punch/tackle to ground pound, and of course, throwing people off platforms, for everything else, JUMP KICK like a dragon! xD Also the bright neon lights on later levels and white yakuza outfit of Kunio look much better than this... brown guy on blue train platform? This series is so good in general, I highly recommend playing all of their sports games (not just Super Dodgeball) and Double Dragon / River City games are also good. Tecmos is long gone, but the Shantae devs, WayForward, are keeping this series alive!
You could have the best looking game in the world with the prettiest graphics and it won't mean a darn thing if the gameplay is trash. I was pleasantly surprised you put the Spectrum version on top.
Why wouldn't I? If a game plays better, it wins regardless of the platform. No bias, but I would prefer a micro game to win out of consoles, and in this case, Renegade is a firm favourite on the Speccy.
I’m really surprised you chose ZX Spectrum but I agree the gameplay is good like the arcade despite the color palette. Now the first time I played Renegade was in the 80’s on an arcade cabinet at a Mexican restaurant. I did spend like $2 and almost beat the game but my parents told me it was time to go home. Later on, I played the NES port at my best friend’s house. We had lots of fun with the version taking turns until we beat the game. In my adulthood years, I played it on MAME by downloading the emulator and arcade ROM of Renegade on my PC. FINALLY, I beat the game!!! 😊😊😊😊😊😊
I used to have the plosive popping sound problem like you have in this video and the best tip anyone gave me was to talk over the microphone instead of into it. I positioned it like you see presenters doing on TV where they hold it by their chest and the popping went straight away 😊I've only just found your channel and love your videos, I'm sure you'll continue to grow and do well in 2025 and beyond 🎉
Now when I understand the Kunio franchise, watching or playing Renegade is almost impossible for me. When you "understand" the Japanese Arcade version (the one with the white suits in it), the story behind it, seen it's cutscenes and ending, and played the NES sequel (River City Ransom), the SNES sequel (Shodai Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun) and got into River City Girls Zero, River City Ransom: Underground, River City Girls and River City Girls 2... This is such a fantastic game series... And the "Renegade" we got feels like basically a gutted sprite-swap. :D
played the cpc version to death! many times getting to the last level only for the tape not to load!😁😁 was a secret key combo to turn back on the red blood if i remember!
The Spectrum port still holds very well to this day. Game play is fantastic, and its controls are very intuitive and responsive. Graphics are well detailed and have a unique style of its own.
I remember playing this at the arcade when it came out. I loved the arcade marquee and the Boss waiting to fight you was so cool. I never saw an arcade game like this before. Unfortunately it wasn’t in my arcade for a long time. It was in and then gone. I don’t think it did well. Double Dragon when it came out did the opposite it did really well for the arcade owners.
i agree that it was difficult to choose between the first two versions of the game! I prefer the cpc one cause it is so colourful and playable too. I have played the spectrum version as well and it is so good too but just i little bit worse than the cpc! What a game that was back in the day although i was more a target renegade fan! In any case...happy new year! :)

Renegade is an absolute doozer game and still one of my favourites that i still play today, I have never been able to complete it tho. If anyone has completed this I would be happy to buy you a pint. Nicely done Jamie another great review
I really enjoy Jamie's series of ranking these ports, however, it can come across formulaic. 8 bit versions lowest, followed by the ST, master system, topped by the amiga with some more obscure games systems floating around. This is why I think the renegade review is the best. A bit of bias as it was one of my first games on the spectrum, but Jamie seems to have considered overall gameplay, not just arcade accuracy. The imaginative, interpretative capabilities combined with programming and graphic application on limited systems is something that making judgements upon is, I think, more interesting than straightforward assessment of arcade accuracy. Great stuff with this video.
@JustJamie1983 I am 8:49 in the video... WHAT THE ... NO! IT IS NOT POSSIBLE!!! NO SPECTRUM OR AMSTARD YET??? THEY ARE NEAR THE TOP??? Controls on the Amstrad also relied on Joystick and keyboard, but you could redefine and use Keyboard alone on both Amstrad and Spectrum... The biggest thing holding back the Amiga was the ST existing. It's the usual Lazy ST port on the Amiga hence why it's slightly less responsive. If programmed probably using the Blitter and other hardware it could and should had been the best version out of all these ports, also having better music on the ST when the Amiga's sound chip can run circles around it is a joke. At least the C64 version was smooth because it used the hardware available.
@@ivarfiske1913 Not so sure, more people might have owned an Amiga without the ST, the price may have stayed higher for longer without the competition and there might have been somewhat less games at first, but at least they'd be made specifically for the Amiga taking advantage of it's hardware more like the C64. Thank f*** the Spectrum didn't have a 6502/6510 processor running a bit faster or we'd had seen masses of crappy Spectrum ports on the C64.
@pjcnet The Amiga 1000 was very expensive. Close to nobody bought it. Its sales equals the Oric at 200 000 to 300 000. Only 256 kB memory included. Later, when the Amiga 500 was launched and larger numbers shipped, the Amiga would have been better off with no ST ports
It's 2024 and Amiga fanboys are still whining about ST existing and being cheaper than their overengineered early 80s game console pretending to be a computer.
yeah great job they did with the Speccy port. I didnt even realise there was an Apple II version until years later.. wouldnt have played it anyway by the looks of it : ) Amstrad version looks great too.
Your Apple II emulator colours are inverse, characters should be orange and white and background blue, the original hardware used a exploit/hack of the composite signal to produce colour from what was from the computer's POV a mono output
Renegade is the Godfather of modern beat em ups and to this day it still hasn't beat in certain regards(the right/left attack was amazing). For me NONE of the ports did this game justice, and the fact this game has gone so long without its proper due is rather sad. This game needs a reboot, remake, or just to be included in a best of collection. And yes, back in the day, I could finish this game on one quarter, as me and my friends played it all the time.
The C64 version was decent IF you had he right set up. You needed a joystick with good suction cup feet and a smooth surfaced table. That way the two buttoned approach was spot on. Otherwise, it was a nightmare. I'd easily have all the "big 3" 8-bit Micros in the top 3 ahead of the console versions.
Never even heard of the ZX Spectrum until I started watching these videos. Personally, I wouldn't have ranked it so high because of the graphics. It's also interesting - Master System port is better than the NES port when head to head; that seems to almost always be the case. Too bad it never really caught on (in the US anyway) like the NES did.
Actually the SMS in this case is using sprites and not background tiles, as evidenced by the smooth moving of the characters and the presence of flicker...
Modern day equivalents of Renegade would be One Finger Death Punch and Kung Fury: The Game. One Finger Death Punch being the better of the two, as it has a better balance with enemies and isn't as punishing if you mess up a bit.
When we had a Spectrum this was probably our best game as it was brilliant. When we had a C64 I hated it the C64 is so bad for it's controls I just used to go to the walls and back kick the enemies.
Totally agree about the Master System version. I recall it got a horrible review in Sega Power which savaged the graphics - which I personally find lovely and busy and colourful (possibly a little too colourful for such a gritty game, but still damn good) - and drew a negative comparison with Double Dragon, which certainly looks OK on the SMS but not as good (being flickery as all hell, and everyone having tiny legs).
100% speccy version. But gotta say I was impressed with the amstrad version. didn't see it back in the day. only one friend had an amstrad and he was a bit of a walk away. local friends had speccy's. I has a zx81 unfortunately. nowadays I aways play the Mame version.
I thought the C64 version was ok once you got used to it but the Speccy version of this and it's sequel were incredible. And Ocean/Imagine were smart to end the series on top and not milk it for a third game
Boo, CPC should have won😂 I did expect it to be very high on the list as this was my favourite fighting game on the cpc back in the day. Just goes to show how good the cpc was in the right hands.
@@ivarfiske1913 and that is why it is HIS opinion. Technically speaking, the zx has better defined gfx, just a tad faster gameplay, better sound and a much bigger play area. Play both back to back and see the difference
@@jimkrom Computer & VideoGames wrote that Renegade clearly was the best on the Amstrad CPC. Clash of the Titans in Games TM magazine crowned the Amstrad CPC version too. Renegade is best on the Amstrad CPC. In addition Renegade has been remade on the Amstrad CPC and Enterprise with smooth scrolling and additional moves. Both excellent versions You are entitled to YOUR opinion. It doesn't make it right
@JustJamie1983 True, true. Me and my mates did have an interesting play session once, where one would control movement and another one did the fight moves. Didn't get very far but it was a good laugh 😆
Always feel sorry for the C64 when it comes to beat 'em ups. Because of how sprites work, they're always going to be very blocky and a max of 4 characters on the screen at once...
If you are ranking the ports according to being the closest to the arcade original, there's no way a monocrome game should be placed #1. It is plainly wrong.
@JustJamie1983 yes, that is because is fun and the game mechanics are similar to the arcade. But IMHO, graphics and sound are too different to be considered #1.
I do agree that the ZX Spectrum port is masterful, but I don't think it's the best one. I'd rank the Master System as the 1st place, NES as the 2nd (the only one really made by Technos, by the way), ZX Spectrum the 3rd and Amstrad CPC the 4th. In my playing experience, those are the ones I felt as the best versions.
Ah, this explains why Kunio-kun games were so great on Famicom, they were done by OG arcade developer, I love their choice to use SD sprites for limitations, and there's SO MUCH FUN playing their sports games!
@@JustJamie1983 yeah man, one of the first games i ever played on my spectrum i can vividly remember when i had a c64 being disappointed with the c64s version of the game afer playing the crap out of it on my spectrum
I dont think ANYTHING could have beat the ZX 128k version, it was a work of art and that extra shoulder throw move made it truly the best and all implemented to just 1 fire button, genius programming, that goes for Target Renegade too, large characters and seriously playable.
The one game I played so so much on my spectrum...I actually prefer it to the arcade by miles.. the knee to the balls sound was superb... My number 1 game on the Speccy by miles.. Have finished it but it was biblically hard. 48k version with no music was my preferred version. WSX OP keys, X being fire. Good list as always 👍🏼

Loved this game on the speccy when I was a kid.

Speccy a very close second

CPC version is awesome, but just like, Chase HQ, RoboCop, Target Renegade it comes second to the Speccy
@@jimkrom
According to Jamie, Robocop is better on the Amstrad CPC
@@ivarfiske1913 and that is why it is HIS opinion. Technically speaking, the zx has better defined gfx, just a tad faster gameplay, better sound and a much bigger play area. Play both back to back and see the difference
@jimkrom of course I don't mind opinions. I welcome them. It's when opinions turn to insults.
@@jimkrom
Computer & VideoGames wrote that Renegade clearly was the best on the Amstrad CPC.
Clash of the Titans in Games TM magazine crowned the Amstrad CPC version too. Renegade is best on the Amstrad CPC.
In addition Renegade has been remade on the Amstrad CPC and Enterprise with smooth scrolling and additional moves. Both excellent versions
You are entitled to YOUR opinion. It doesn't make it right
I always played the C64 version with 2 joysticks, one for walking and the other for fighting 😅
But yeah, Speccy and the CPC win this one.
I mean. The C64 version ain't bad it's just a messy setup.
@JustJamie1983 True, true.
WHIPLASH PUNK!
Arcade wins.
Great to see the Speccy get real recognition. Spot on. Spectrum royally here...although personally i could barely get off level one.
To be fair. It is a tough game.
If you are ranking the ports according to being the closest to the arcade original, there's no way a monocrome game should be placed #1. It is plainly wrong.
And you have heard me speak and hear why this is right?
@JustJamie1983 yes, that is because is fun and the game mechanics are similar to the arcade. But IMHO, graphics and sound are too different to be considered #1.
I do agree that the ZX Spectrum port is masterful, but I don't think it's the best one. I'd rank the Master System as the 1st place, NES as the 2nd (the only one really made by Technos, by the way), ZX Spectrum the 3rd and Amstrad CPC the 4th. In my playing experience, those are the ones I felt as the best versions.
Hey, thanks for your feedback.
Ah, this explains why Kunio-kun games were so great on Famicom, they were done by OG arcade developer, I love their choice to use SD sprites for limitations, and there's SO MUCH FUN playing their sports games!
@KasumiRINA Yes, absolutely! Great remembrance of Technos' SD game creations!
i first played renegade on zx spectrum i love it still play the speccy version today on emu 🥰
An absolute blast to play.
Totally agreed with your rankings, the Speccy version is brilliant.
Thank you. It's certainly was 😀
@@JustJamie1983 yeah man, one of the first games i ever played on my spectrum
i can vividly remember when i had a c64 being disappointed with the c64s version of the game afer playing the crap out of it on my spectrum
I dont think ANYTHING could have beat the ZX 128k version, it was a work of art and that extra shoulder throw move made it truly the best and all implemented to just 1 fire button, genius programming, that goes for Target Renegade too, large characters and seriously playable.
Totally agree.
100%
Finally we agree, the Slectrum version is the best 👍
Glad to hear about that.
Speccy version is by far the best. It also had the best version of Target Renegade which was a better game.
😀
The one game I played so so much on my spectrum...I actually prefer it to the arcade by miles.. the knee to the balls sound was superb...
My number 1 game on the Speccy by miles.. Have finished it but it was biblically hard.
48k version with no music was my preferred version.
WSX OP keys, X being fire.
Good list as always 👍🏼
Oddly enough. I kinda prefer too.
@@JustJamie1983 when you're 8 (1988).. this game eats away at your time like a stick of rock.
Level 4 though, whole new level of hard.
Absolutely terrible audio quality.
Thanks for your comment.
Have you done midnight resistance yet?
Not yet but my playlist for ports is Pinned.
