- On this week’s Monday Match Analysis, Gill Gross previews and predicts the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, where the top-8 will do battle on the quickest conditions on tour. The Green Group features Novak Djokovic, Holger Rune, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner, while the Red Group has Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev. We’ll also cover Ugo Humbert’s title in Metz and Adrian Mannarino’s perfect ending in Sofia.

If you can't tell by the 1 billion comments, I made a mistake and said Novak was in an ATP Finals draught. Last year slipped my mind in the moment. He had been in one until winning last year.

Unlike you to forget. Djokovic was a winner last year and 5-0 at that.
He won last 5 ATP finals titles without defeat. From 2012-2015 he went 19-0, plus one WO. And 5-0 last year.

Djokovic is the defending champion tho. He won in 2022.
Novak won the ATP final last year, so not much of a drought. But prior to 2022, he hadn't won it since 2015.
Full year since he won it. If he only wins 1 Slam it's considered a below average year

Agree that Djokovic wins this, but I think that he will go undefeated in the round robin and take home the full fifteen hundred. He will lift two trophies, ATP WTF and the year end Number One.

Gill, do you think ATP Finals should switch locations quicker than about every 10 years? Because if conditions stay the same for 10 years, they suit some players much better than others. Should they switch locations/conditions every 3 years or so?
It was 10 yrs at London now its only 5 yrs. After 2026 its a new location

Outstanding job on the preview of round robin! Of course, Medvedev having already qualified and lacking focus in the 3rd match, Sinner surpassed the already optimistic expectations, and Tsitsipas dropped out. Medvedev defeating Sinner in 3 makes sense last week (before the Nole boost of confidence) and you got Djokovic in 2 vs Alcaraz. Very competent!
Gasquet should have got a mention in the oldies but goldies title winners talk!
Think Novak wins his group winning against Rune, Stef & Yannick. Think the Sinner v Rune match should be rokin'. Novak 3-0, Yannick 2-1, Rune 1-2, Stef 0-3. Think Meddy & Rublev play in SF's. Carlos could get there but not sure he's fit & healthy enough. Meddy 2-1, Rublev 2-1 w/Meddy losing to Sasha but beating Carlos & Andre. Sasha 1-2 beating Meddy. Carlos 1-2 beating Sasha.. Novak beats Rublev and then Sinner again in Finals. Sinner beats Meddy and loses to Nole. Thanx Gill. Best, Milan.

either way, these are pretty fair predictions. really hoping for one of rublev, sinner, or rune to pull the upset even though the obvious pick here is to go for djokovic.
i think alcaraz is going to struggle more than anyone here by his standards. he's been the worst player here post us open and is the worst on indoor hard court by quite a bit

i mean, rune has probably been significantly worse but yeah. Sinner is really the one poised to make the leap of an upset us to be had.
Zverev and Rune have been worse post-USO than Alcaraz. Only reason people think Alcaraz has been horrible is because of the Djokovic fanboys acting like he’s having the single worst stretch of tennis ever fathomed.

@@choide19 alcaraz has higher standards than rune. people expect more out of him. you can't put a two time slam champion and someone with only one masters at the same level of expectation. and even then, i wouldn't say significantly worse. rune made semis in basel and quarters in paris where he put up a fight against djokovic whereas alcaraz got smoked by safiullin. his level has been higher than alcaraz's. rune is in better form at the moment and SIGNIFICANTLY better than alcaraz on indoor hard court because he actually has a big title there.
In the end these were very close predictions! The only major difference was Sinner beat Meddy, but the 2 set finals was even predicted.
Overall good predictions, Gill. Basically, you missed Alcaraz beating Medvedev in the RR (in a not very meaningful match for Med) and Sinner beating Medvedev in the SF.

@@dantesvaljean1868 I am not stuck in the past I just love a good tennis match with my preferences being Carlos; Rune; Sinner; Shelton Zverev Ruud; Felix Auger Aliassime and Fils.
Pretty good predictions, I'd wager Carlos will stay behind Medvedev and Rublev, who have been playing great lately.

I will disagree on two points. I don't think Rublev can win anything and he goes out 0-3 and I think Alcaraz is done for the season and he goes out 1-2 imo in the round robin since he has not had a chance to gain momentum for months now and seems to really fumble in these conditions oddly despite doing amazing on grass this year
Rublev just outplayed Zverev recently and he’s got a thick chance against Carlos given both players’ forms
And Rublev beat Medvedev last year at Atp finals...Anything is possible...I remember last year people saying Ruud is the worst players for Atp finals and i also remebber everyone saying the same in 2021 but he went to the semis in 2021 and final in 2022...@@marchvertochko0056
MY PICKS: Holger to final odds 12 - Holger advance through group odds 4.50 ....Sinner to final odds 3,20 to cover if Holger doesnt pass group stage.
Meddy went 0-3 in ATP FINALS twice now.. it's not a fluke really.
It was a fluke indeed, he served for a match in two matches against Stef and Novak and lost all the matches in the 3rd set tie break

Interesting matchup between Novak and Rune. Rune has had a disappointing year and the breakthrough we all thought would happen, didn’t but he did play Novak tough in Paris.
Rune has a game that bothers Novak which is evident in Paris especially but Novak is the best ever at making adjustments and with the high of the Paris title and an incredible year, Novak enters Turing relatively fresh and confident and I think he’ll be a little more free in stepping off the gas. Novak in straight sets.

Although possible, in the history of this event I don't think anyone made semis with 1-2 round robin record.
Thought the same until having checked the records: 2016 Nishikori and 2006 Nalbandian.

The only thing that will stop Djokovic is injury or fatigued. These conditions are tailor made for Novak.
I think Red group is pretty open because if Djokovic beats Rune ( and I think he will because he beat him in Paris when he had stomach issue), than Alcaraz will know that his chance to become nb1 is now mathematically zero, and I think that will affect him so he may lose his first match with Zverev. Also, Rublev can beat Medvedev and Medvedev can beat anybody. That's why I'm way more interested to see who will go to semi from there. Green group is pretty clear. Novak is fixing his form for Devis Cup. And now I believe he is healthy. Rune and Tsitsipas are also good but I think Sinner will beat them both.
