Dude I'm 59 I've been stuck in the hospital for 4 months fighting a bone infection, I've owned a few boats up in South Jersey. I thought I was the king of do it yourself but you have me beat I Love your content it takes my mind off this bone infection, when I'm healed up I want a Job I'll work for free just to get a taste of the hustle. Keep up the great content
Get well soon! We need all the DIYers we can keep, this guy is exceptional but most folks between his age and mine (33) can't even change their oil. Hell, I know a bunch of folks that don't even know how to cut their own grass.
I’m a diesel boat mechanic on the Chesapeake down in Virginia and we work on stuff like that all the time. If you ever need Cat parts for that thing I suggest Carter Cat. They’re an awesome shop and usually carry just about everything
i can agree cats suck but i love them lol.. not to mention the only time i was there the boat broke down and they were the only ones who had the unusual part and a gasket a few years ago seriously if i member right it was a john or tom or close too lol 4 years ago i did have to crash at the port near broken oar if i member right i seriously cant remember a lot of things off the top but i think thats what i recall i j ow it was off the patapasco river
You’re hysterical. Watching at least one of your videos has become a part of my day. You make daily life seem manageable for everyone in a fun way. Your self deprecation is charming. Thanks for posting Luke.
Yeah same here. I live close enough to go get crabs from him and plan to asap. Unfortunately, crabs for a relatively large family are kind of expensive, so it hasn't happened yet :/ Hopefully around labor day
@@BarbarisII I would buy Luke’s crabs if I could eat them but I’m allergic to crabs. But it’s just fun watching and listening to his adventures. He’s just such a decent person…and funny.
@mikemunhall7399 that's such a shame, sorry you have to deal with that! Crabs and shellfish in general are my favorite food, I can't imagine having to avoid them :/
If you turn the 5 gallon bucket of oil so the spigot is on the high side of the bucket as you pour it, it won't "glug" it will pour out smoothly in a constant stream. It will make it easier to pour with out it making a mess. Works with everything one might pour paint, hydraulic fluid, oil, transmission fluid, ect. Keep up the great work.
I swear, one of these days, this Seabee is gonna just show up and start fixin your shit lol. Your vids make me feel your pain lol. But you doin what you gotta do, much respect for the hustle brother.
Luke your doing a GREAT JOB. For the oil filters they sell a wrench that goes on them with a cloth strap and a 1/2 ratchet or breaker bar. that should make it a little easier on you. take care and keep it up.
Luke,,, you are an awesome young fellow. More young people should have your enthusiasm and work ethic. Do not despaired doing it wrong , we all learn from our mistakes. I applaud your strength.
I've not seen your channel before, one of your videos just popped up randomly, I've got to say, I'm completely blown away by your indomitable spirit & tireless hard working drive! Not many young guys like you around, so much energetic enthusiasm. Very rearly see people who love there jobs. If I had money I'd be helping you out. But I will watch. Thank you
Little tip for doing electrical work, consider picking yourself up a set of Solderstck crimp connectors, if haven’t already heard of them they are essentially crimp connectors with built in low temp solder and shrink wrap all in one so the make awesome weather tight connections. They’re kinda life changing if you do much electrical work like that. Heck you may be able to score a partnership with the as the do help out a lot of automotive UA-camrs. 😬
Hey Luke! Great to see you at it again. Two things I hope will help you are 1) Use your dielectric grease on all exposed copper (like that ground wire that was all oxidized and cooking the contact) and 2) Invest in some "solder seal wire connectors" from companies like TICONN or Kuject for any splicing or connector replacement (VERY handy). You might consider buying some gun oil or just a lightweight oil and wipe down all your tools to slow down the rusting. You could also blacken them, but that would take more time (better, more durable coating though!)
I’ve seen a small brewery use a window AC unit to cool their walk in cooler, it was just a small one, probably a little bigger then your trailer. It worked great kept it below 40 degrees.
Mechanics tip - Find an old leather belt. Get a length of steel pipe of about 18". wrap the filter with the bet and put the pip through the belt between the filter and the belt, then twist the pipe until the belt is tight around the filter and start turning the filter. If it slips twist the pipe more until tighter and repeat until the filter comes loose. I promise its easier than the crappy filter wrench.
Keep it up brother! I feel the same as you in a lot of ways! Started a food truck a little over a year ago. And it has been fun but also very challenging in a lot of areas
I’m grinding it out too You ve been a huge inspiration to me this spring and summer Jim in Chicago Do a video on where you got your work ethic from. Get to work!
While filling it up, spilt it all over this thing, remember your words Luke, spilling a little helps protect from rust. Life of a small businessman Luke shows us firsthand the grind and sacrifice it takes. Keep grinding away Luke.
I give you this little info, if you know this sorry to be waiting your time, usually you should not start and stop refrigerating equipment without letting the compressor rest for at least 15 minutes. This allows the compressor to equalize the internal pressure, so when you start the compressor it is starting with zero pressure. Hope that makes sense.
Made our Sunday here. Love the channel and love your attitude man, what you leave unsaid notwithstanding, youre a beast man. All the best from me and mine
Don't let anyone tell you different about the old CAT motors you are using. 3208's will run forever if you take care of them. We use them in the oilfield. Also, without all of the ridiculous computer crap they have on the new engines, they are easy to work on. The reason mechanics don't want to work on them is because they cant charge the higher prices.
Their only flaws are in the front of each head they have some plastic clamps that give way and you spill your antifreeze and if your not paying attention overheat ur engine and these clamps are hard to get to . My advice a good oil and temp alarm with a loud buzzer. I don’t think he has one
One law of thermodynamics, as metal gets hot, it expands. So your oil filter threads have expanded and are now constricted against the engine block threads. Try loosening when cold by a 1/8 turn. Then run engine to get hot.
Hi Luke, on my 3208 in my charter boat I break the filters loose before I warm the engine breaking loose. Spin them on until they barely touch start your engine let it warm up and It will come right off.
One suggestion I would have for you- use Never Seize on all of your bolts. I believe they make a salt water formula, I had some many years ago and It was green. The guy that gave me that stuff said they used to use it on underwater connections at the Philadelphia ship yard back in the day. Since I ran out of that stuff I have been using the Copper and Nickle formulas, never have a problem taking stuff apart, it's messy if you get it on you but well worth using, saves a lot of time getting stuff apart. I recently discovered that Harbor Freight carries it. Keep up the good work. Just think you only have about another thirty plus years of fun to look forward to.
U guys kno Y i subscribed and personally praise young luke here, hes a young man already out trying to build his own little empire to provide for himself and his other half. The thing with this new generation of young men is most are not out hustling n bustling to earn that precious dollar. Half of this generation all day are sitting at home playing games or at the pc worrying abt social media than getting a real job to build up that nest egg. The other quarter is either out in the streets every night breaking into ppls houses and stealing cars or destroying other ppls property. Then the remaining quarter is either just too dammmn good to work for someone or they complain about not being paid enuff for there time or are requesting to work less but are expecting to be paid more. Tell ya wat though.. there is nothing harder than being a young entrepreneur. The start is always the most difficult.. getting that rapport and customer base takes time. There is so much choice for ppl to choose from so u have to give customers a good reason why they should part with their money on you. If u have sons n daughters thats young n already know how to fend for themselves and earn there living, your the lucky few.
Pro Tip. Smack a hole in the bottom of the filters with a lady finger or Phillips screwdriver. Direct the oil with a funnel that has a bendy neck. After the oil drains out. Use a grease gun. Put a pump of grease in the hole you made to stop it from leaking. No mess to clean up.
I'm getting ready to go work on my live well pump and a bunch of other stuff. I'll lose a gallon of water in the first 15 minutes. It's 90 degrees out with ridiculous humidity here in Florida. I just sit in that big white tub and bake😂
Luke, I have to applaud you on your hard work. Most people your age don't even want to work or move out of their parents house, you doing all this work at your age is rareity. Keep grinding young man and your grind will only turn into success !
doing good man, even filled the filters and oiled the seals! on the rudder, that thin fibreglass will keep doing that, would plan on getting a glass guy to reinforce it properly sometime in the future ( and i'd want to seriously inspect the rudder log for fatigue from all the years of flexing) and as others pointed out, turning the 5gal bucket around will let the bucket vent, and reduce the glugging, and you can pick up a strap wrench for that rachet, and get some serious leverage on the filters.... keep it up! quickly becoming a favorite channel man, doing good
Hay Luke next time you change the oil make shore you put the oil filter on hand tight, just a good snug, the rubber seal kind of melts to the Aluminum housing when it gets hot. I hope that helps ya. Keep up the good work
Like you are a solid guy! Enjoy your content and you seem like a hard working, genuine guy. Small tip for future, those bolts and nuts you used, you ever think to try using lock washers between the plate and nut? To keep the nut from pulling into the wood. Also try nylon but not sure that will hold up, if not stainless steel maybe. Good luck man!
Truck camper suggestion for one person operation. Hang camper with ropes and pullies from tree limb or other support. Drive under and lower camper on bed or lift off. If you dont have a tree suitable, build a simple wooden A frame to pull under and just raise or lower your camper with the ropes. God bless.
Hey Luke you should definitely try loosening the filters before you start the engine and warm the oil up!!! They might be easier to loosen up while they are still cold!! Metal does expand when it gets hot so that could be part of the problem when you are trying to take the filters off after you have warmed the oil up!!! Yes I am a mechanic and have had issues before when changing oil that someone else had done the time before I got the job!!!
luke, good move doing ur own work, helps with the bottom line....a couple of suggestions, buy a can of pure teflon grease and use that to pre lube the oil filter gasket and threads on the filter...you will notice a difference the next time u r enjoying urself changing the oil.....also if you turn the 5 gall spout the opposite, even though it sounds odd, you won't have the issue with spills. as a former mechanic this truly will work.......keep up the good work. hope ur pots are loaded with some nice whales....
Anyone that talks smack in your comments either has never had or owned a boat or has way more money then they need keep up the great content and hard work brother
11:52 omg been there so many times. Rotary air compressors have some big friggin fikters and oil air separators that are even bigger. I have moved the equipment trying to get them to budge. They are not fun, i have the home depot strap wrench for one hand and a ½" ratchet drive strap wrench in the other wit a breakerxbar and extension. I have collapsed them many times.
Hey just a tip for next time, pick up a pair of rubber dish gloves to use when dealing with the hot oil. Will keep your hands both clean and cool!! Also next time you go to do a maintenance day write down what you want to do then what those tasks will require. You said people would say do it right the first time and your response was you didn't have time. But you made a trip to the hardware store for supplies and you had planned to fix the rudder support since you already had the braces. It's not that you don't have time it's just that you are being pulled in a million different directions. Maybe just try writing down things with a little more detail a couple times and see if it helps. What's the worst that that will happen, you give it up and go back to flying by the seat if your pants. Love the videos and absolutely respect your hustle and refusel to ever give up.
Hey bro I worked on garbage trucks with big old mechanical Cummins in them, those filters can for sure be a pain in the ass!😂 type in google “breaker bar filter wrench” basically the same as what you got but with a 1/2” drive receiver so you can hook in any length breaker bar you’d like, either that or a chain wrench!! Love the videos bro🤙🏼
When doing electrical stuff that is well above my head I take pictures and use bandages to label stuff. You write on the absorbent part and its unlikely to leave any adhesive residue. I had to replace a 3 phase motor on a hood system on the fly and somehow did it right.
I run Rotella T4 15W-40 in everything I own. My lawnmowers, my old '81 KZ750LTD, my clapped out 2000 Silverado with 278K on the clock of the ol 5.3 Its great oil. Has all the vitamins and nutrients an engine needs.
I have an idea for the truck cap. When you take it off, back under a tree limb and use a chain hoist. Let it hang until you need it back on. Not sure if you tried that before but it's worth a shot. Thats almost as bad as hooking up an auger on a tractor.
Also a large set of channel lock pliers is what we used to remove filters, I know your not a tool guy but the investment at Harbor Freight will make your life easier at least in that case.
Also try using welders gloves for engine work like oil changes. They are cheap enough $10-20 at Harbor Freight and save you from the hand burns. Are you able to use anti-seize on the oil filter threads? A life saver if you are.
Pro tip from a heavy equipment mechanic: When pouring oil out of a 5 gallon bucket, pour it with the spout on the top. It lets air in as the oil comes out, keeping it from making a huge mess. Try it. It works.
Luke, ya know a couple 2x4’s a rope & pulley hooked up to those trees can make that bed cap a lot less of a hassle & yes We all know u like to do it the hard way all the time but maybe just once try the easy way, it’s good motivation!!
I hope this isn't so, but your compressor might dying on your fridge. Perhaps the reason your wiring is getting fried and maybe it was the thermo protector on your compressor kicking it off and later back on. Need to check how many amps it's drawing. Love your videos! Good luck!
I was wondering what you had for power, I love 3208s, when I worked at a boat yard in Deale a bulk of our customers were work/charter boats with old mechanical Cats, Cummins, and MANs. The pleasure boats we'd work on were usually Yanmar, Perkins, Lehman, or Nanni. I hated working on gas shit, especially mercruiser, and eventually strictly only worked on diesel stuff. But unfortunately Maryland put me out of business in 2014 with the self employment tax increase and change in liability insurance regulations. It caused a lot of small shops to close..

nevermind it is a work boat
I’m in but like he said…works as good as used 😂😂😂

classic quote from an old salty captain, "if you dont have time to do it right the first time, when will you have time to do it a 2nd time".

Modern day macgyver. You give me hope in a world full of panzees! Masculinity exists! Rock on young blood ❤❤
That filter's been changed as often as i see my therapist
Pro tip: Your therapist has wayyyy deeper darker issues than you do 😂
Yelling while working on an engine is so relatable
The only problem with the noise is that it’s harder for your “coworkers” to know how angry you really are.
You are amazing Luke! You seem to have an answer to every problem. You can fix anything and you are entertaining too. Love your channel Sir!😉

The wire size was correct before you replaced it. It was the burnt out plug causing high amps heating up the wires.

Luke love the channel. Get a belt wrench for the oil filters. Large size. Oil filter will not have a chance with that tool.
Doing great little buddy. Keep it up. Take care of the equipment it'll take care of you

I feel ur pain bradah😂 the reason why the oil filter is hard to take off after u hand tight it, is bcuz the heat expands the metal🤙🏾💯
Luke, When your pouring out of the 5 gallon pale. Start pouring with spout on top it will leave air in .
Use the force Luke!

Get yourself a large channel lock pliers to help you get the filters off. It works great when you get a stuck filter.
doing good man, even filled the filters and oiled the seals! on the rudder, that thin fibreglass will keep doing that, would plan on getting a glass guy to reinforce it properly sometime in the future ( and i'd want to seriously inspect the rudder log for fatigue from all the years of flexing)

Anyone that talks smack in your comments either has never had or owned a boat or has way more money then they need keep up the great content and hard work brother
PRO TIP* Pour with the spout on the top, and the oil won't glug out, making a mess. You have to be able to let air in as oil comes out.
You know it takes some talent to talk to a camera and with no one else to commentary back to you. He has the best sense of humor. God keep him safe.
I love that Permatex dielectric grease, and I do the same thing… get too much on first use! You are not alone
"Thats tighter than a gnats @ss" 😂😂
If you ever need decent size wire for power and negative, just buy jumper cables. They’re a little thick but are very nice and cheap
Never enough time to do it right the first time but there is always plenty of time to fix it when it breaks.
Love the sound affects we all have been there😂
When doing electrical stuff that is well above my head I take pictures and use bandages to label stuff. You write on the absorbent part and its unlikely to leave any adhesive residue. I had to replace a 3 phase motor on a hood system on the fly and somehow did it right.
I run Rotella T4 15W-40 in everything I own. My lawnmowers, my old '81 KZ750LTD, my clapped out 2000 Silverado with 278K on the clock of the ol 5.3
Its great oil.
Flip the bucket so the spout is closer to you and it will pour much better
Luke you always place oil on the filter gasket and never tighten more than hand tight. You’re working too hard! Again! Love your videos!
Thermoking should sponsor your channel!!!
Also a large set of channel lock pliers is what we used to remove filters, I know your not a tool guy but the investment at Harbor Freight will make your life easier at least in that case.
You are smart and hardworking!!
Also try using welders gloves for engine work like oil changes. They are cheap enough $10-20 at Harbor Freight and save you from the hand burns.
Are you able to use anti-seize on the oil filter threads? A life saver if you are.
Pro tip from a heavy equipment mechanic:
When pouring oil out of a 5 gallon bucket, pour it with the spout on the top. It lets air in as the oil comes out, keeping it from making a huge mess. Try it. It works.
Keep it up Luke! You’re the man!
Good luck!
Man, you sure remind me of myself. Love you bro!
If you use some oil on the filter gasket it will make it easier to remove them in the future. Plus they don’t need to be over tightened either.
