  • An experience engine builder for many years has ran these Mopar magnum heads with very little problems. The solution that he told me for the cracking is you have to catch it before it catches you. There is simple tricks, and tips that hopefully this video will help you with.
This covers all of the mopar magnum platforms of the 360 and 318.
Attitude that, please make sure that your lifter orientation is correct when installing seeing how we are on the top end subject
Make sure that oil hole is facing towards the intake, and not towards the crank

I replaced my heads with a new casted magnum head when I rebuilt my 5.9 in my jeep. Love that 5.9

Your learning kid. I thought about you today and was going to reference you in a video short. It was windy as f and i had to move steel siding panels guess what that was about. Maybe drag coefficients and lift.😂

@@bigwrenchtech I think ya did good actually. Very informative video. I use a die grinder myself and cut a little more off between the valves and walk it back more. Less heat transfer. Most don't know about the lifters oil holes either. Guess how I learned that one. Yup oops

Cool tip. I got a 5.9 I'm about to start building I will try that. If they aren't already cracked! I agree those magnum valve covers are hideous! I plan on using LA covers

So far everything seems to be working accordingly. Yeah I’m not so keen on the valve covers at all.🤣🤣 thank you so much for commenting

Starting in 94 until few weeks ago I’ve owned at least a dozen 5.9 magnum trucks and never had a cracked head or blown head gasket. I’ve r an a lotta NX through two of em and managed to burn the ends off a few dozen plugs never even seen a cracked 5.9 head but Ive never ran em hot

That’s pretty awesome that you never came across any cracks. It’s unfortunately a pretty common thing. Just for fun I googled up cracked magnum heads, and there is a complete breakdown of it.

@@bigwrenchtech I don’t doubt it at all a lot like the slugged up 3.5 v6 failures and terrible doge transmission…. there are volumes of articles and ppl with stories on both failing.
I over seen three major port operations on the east coast and bought about 100 vans between 96-2001 with v6 -5.9 motors.
I’m also a die hard Mopar man never seen first hand anything other than normal wear and tear.
We had a good vehicle maintenance program I set up. I truly believe 99% of the failures were due to running em hot and bad or no maintenance. But that’s just me .

I've only seen the 671 truck heads crack. It seems to be an issue with the induction hardening of the valve seats at the factory. Never seen 044 Jeep heads crack.

Anus'd....LOL Every time you say it I laugh! I haven't used that word since the 90s! LOLOL
Yeah I see the theory behind it. Might as well give it a try, got nothing to loose!

    I'll give it a try.
After getting 12 heads tanked & magged just to have 10 cracked too badly to use....anus'd to use your phrase.
The 2 perfect ones will be for the Barracuda you painted up here.
I noticed new Magnum castings offered already drilled out for LA intake pattern, which may be useful going forward.
On the plus side- have a ton of stainless Magnum 1.92/1.60 valves to use in small chamber 273 heads and some #302 castings....

That’s pretty awesome! I didn’t know you could use those valves in a 273 head. That is some good knowledge my man. so far, the gentleman that taught me that trick I have had no problems with the heads sense.
