Dimebag chose passion over lust. Even if you don't like the music he played, you have to respect the man.
Fun fact: Dimebag had a guitar in his bathroom, so he could write music even when he was on the throne.
''I have a guitar in my bathroom, that's why my riffs are the shit'' - Dimebag Darrell.

Interesting that so many of the greatest were so attached to their guitars like it was an appendage, to the point of sleeping with them. So sad to hear the tragic details and wishing all the best to the others going forward.

i was so incredibly lucky to run into Rita at the bar i worked at and she invited my friend and I to go meet Dimebag at Baby Dolls in Arlington. They had it open past hours for him and the people with him. He then said follow me to my house, so my friend and I and some Ft. Worth minor league hockey players went to his house. everybody hung out drinking until about 2AM and left. He had no problem with us staying to just hang out. He was such an incredibly generous human being. My friend passed out, so Dime and I just drank, listened to music and shot the shit until about 10AM the next morning. They were making Reinventing the Steel at the time and he would play me selections and he genuinely wanted to know my opinion on them (that felt like such an honor). He had to show off his 2 pitchforks that came out of the ceiling that would blow smoke out of their tips. I know everybody says this but it is so true, Dimebag was a beautiful person that made the world a better place and some asshole took him from us. RIP Dime, I love you brother

Being in high school in the early 90s and discovering Metal bands for the first time was just insane.. Priest came out with Painkiller, Overkill came out with Horrorscope, Slayer came out with Seasons, Megadeth came out with Rust, and of course Pantera came out with Cowboys.. The music was just phenomenal back then..

Ive always said I grew up in the wrong decade(Born '96.. lol. At least my ole man has always been a headbanger & he was stuck in the '80s for a long time with his mullet and long hair lol.) But I'm VERY thankful for the internet. The access to music and other information today is hardly comparable to 25 years ago.

Dime and Phil are both juggernauts in their own right. But what really made Pantera possible and doesn't always get as much credit as it deserves was the tightest fucking rhythm section metal has ever seen. A lot of people don't understand how hard it is to play Pantera's "power groove" style metal, unlike a lot of metal music there are more empty spaces that must stay empty and then there are spaces that must be filled, timing is of the utmost importance and if it's off by a half beat the whole thing could derail. Dimebag's virtuoso guitar playing and Phil's versatile vocals are rarely missed by anyone but what's always stood out to me when listening to Pantera is how impeccably Vinnie & Rex laid down the rythms that Dime & Phil were able to soar so high over.

Thanks. Good job summing that up. Like starting a fire, good music needs to breathe. Space to allow for time and impact between beats. A negative aspect of a lot of metal is like a nervous need to fill all the space. Creating needless musical claustrophobia.
      Thank God for Pantera.

When Cowboys came out, I was in high school. For whatever reason my alarm rest to 4am and was set for the radio. for 3 days, I woke up to Gates. Then I started searching to find out who it was because they didn't always say who it was.
So it took about 3 weeks to find the band name.

You hit the nail perfect. They stayed metal, stayed loyal to their fans and friends. That's hard to find when people "make it" in the music bizz. They had a way of tapping into teen angst that no one had before, plus they never acted like they were better because of fame. That alone was appealing in itself. Very rare to find. Spent real time with fans. Nobody does that.

I miss these guys so much...with their music I can safely say ( as can many others) without this band in my life I would not be here...music is less richer for not having Dime and Vinnie in it anymore....the greatest....many have tried but no one will ever match what Dime could do on a guitar....the only thing that could kill Pantera was sadly Pantera....
Fly high brothers Abbot you are truly missed by so many...your influence will last a life time💔💔😥😥😥

If Phil had just gotten the back procedure done there is no telling where Pantera could have gone in term of heights. He seems very self pride driven in terms of working really hard. That's what happened when labels stopped pushing bands and promoting EDM. Bands are expensive. Once CD sales dried up, it was cheaper to put a 20 year old DJ in a station wagon on tour than it was to pay for tour support for big productions like a band needs. Once those tunes are on the radio, kids listen. Fast forward a decade or so, and new artists are trying to emulate their heroes, few of which use real instrumentation. Sad really, but as always, follow the money.

Terry Glaze sounds kinda generic but overall the tunes are as good as plenty of major-label stuff from the same era -- Dokken, Scorpions, Quiet Riot. The lead-off track, "All Over Tonight." coulda been a minor hit single and Diamond Darrell is tearin' up that fretboard like it owes him money. Plus, the band members were in their late teens or early 20s when they recorded this album and they did everything with their own talent and some local help. Definitely way above average.

Even back during their early days, they had a heavy edge that was far away from the other "glam metal" bands of the day. I can listen to the pre-Cowboys stuff any day!
BTW, the Pantera car was made by DeTomasso, and had a Ford V8 engine. It was NOT a Ford! LoL

Bottom line was that Phil chose dope over Pantera. I know what it's like to be addicted. Phil was probably so embarrassed because even though he said after his overdose that he wouldn had the willpower to shut the door on his Heroin use, I'm sorry but it just doesn't work that way. You can tell what a dark place he was in just by the way he looked. I'm so glad that he made it out of it alive. I've lost so many friends to herion, including my Fiance of 13 years. I'm sorry I never got to hear Damage Plan play live. Pantera is still my favorite band. R.I.P Brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul Abbott. RE-SPECT 👊 I hope there's a special place in Hell for people like Nathan Gail.
