Living in New York can be quite expensive so today I go through how much I spend in a typical month from groceries, food, restaurants, transportation, rent and everything in between.

Also, to the gym membership & then also the “renting” with roommates. Over the years, I’ve known a lot of people that paid for the expensive gym membership so they could use the showers & bathrooms in the luxury gyms since it was an upgraded experience compared to their own apartment situation
It is crazy how fast everything adds up. I’m always blown away
$275 per month just for the gym is a lot! 😮
Yeah..that's someone's yearly membership cost lol 🌝
$26 per month at GO GYM in Chiang Mai, Thailand
And Chinadolls is my type 😘🤗
That's because he can afford it and doesn't want to go to a shittier low class gym.
Agreed. I spent only 26 bucks a month for a planet fitness membership.
4000$ for one room is just wild lol
Brett- I beg to differ. Nyc native, 53+ yrs. My rent for my real 1 bedroom in a very desirable part of Manhattan in an amenities bldg is ½ your rent. Remember the avg ny’er doesn’t have 2 terraces on a high floor, high rise bldg.
I agree, I just moved to the east village this month and I pay 2700 for a 1 bedroom that I’m sharing with my gf. When he made the comment that 5700 a month is average for late 20s, early 30s it made me realize this guy clearly came from a good family and doesn’t know what reality is. The average mid 20 year old does not make 100k a year.
It's expensive to live almost anywhere these days. It's getting crazy. So may as well live where you want and just adjust life best you can.
I get paid like 4000 a month... what the actual fuck?! 1500 a month for rent for a 5 bedroom house, 2 bathrooms full basement, full yard. New York sounds horrible considering the prices! That's fuuuck. I get paid 4000 a month and still have enough money to put away 1000$ every 2 weeks in savings
Would you like to share where you live, that would be nice to know?
@@BlkDiesel id also like to know lol
Where do you live?
@truthseekingtroll3575 I live in small town saskacthewan. 🇨🇦
Nothing bad against new York though other then their state government. I'd love to visit eventually, I would just hate to pay them prices!
@@zacharystruble6439 I live in Vancouver. I hate the cost of living here. I'm definitely going to move back to my home city Edmonton one of these days. Prices aren't as good as smalltown/rural Saskatchewan or Alberta but it's better than this shit hole lol
Great video. I know it may seem like a lot but when you factor in how much you're potentially making you're doing fine and within your means. Would be interesting if we saw a video that showcased what you make in a month. Maybe not exact numbers for privacy reasons but showing what a scheduled month of work looks like. Think it cold be great from your fans who are also up and comers to see. Appreciate the content.
That would be so cool.
How did you come to this conclusion? He never talks about how much money he makes. For all we know, he could have absolutely no savings and just make enough money to live month to month.
@@cephinisemodestin3348 he mentioned it a few times In previous videos. He definitely isn’t living paycheck to paycheck. My post wasn’t necessarily about his income but how his schedule is structured to facilitate his income.
New Yorker here.. born n raised in North Jersey but live in midtown. This is very realistic. One of the things I tell everyone is that even making 100k (6 figures) isn't enough to comfortably live in New York. Brett just popped out a modest 5700 per month and 100k after taxes in New York City comes out to about 5500/month. I know people who easily spend 8-15k per month in New York.
No doubt NYC is very pricey! But, what other city in the world has so much to do for everyone? Plus, you really don't need a car! As long as you can get that $150K a year job you are all set! If you can't get that kind of money then I guess you will have roommates! Problem solved.
I thought it was gonna be worse. Don’t live in NYC but you just hear how crazy expensive it is.
This was interesting. I’ve been tabulating my costs for the last 2 years. Went to NYC a few times but Nov 2021 was the only entire uninterrupted month of being there and I spent $3375 - all in, stayed at a room in an Airbnb. Probably not doable anymore in 2023!
Watching content creators living in NYC in different financial phases with different yet similar lifestyles is so interesting 😊 these types of videos are quite interesting to watch 😀😀
Man opened with ' i spend $275 on gym when it could cost $15' and i instantly dipped lmaooooo
Thanks for keeping it real in this video. I’ve been a student in nyc for 5 years just graduated and am planning on living on a much lower monthly budget. He is right. It is possible. And he is right, his total is much more realistic. Guys nyc is crazy expensive until you move here I don’t wanna be hearing nothing about the prices he is mentioning. It is just plain expensive. The trade off is your personal life is likely to be amazing in nyc, the best people in the world are here. Peace and love always.
Me living in Shanghai with my girlfriend for less than 800 dollars per month including rent, food, transportation, etc... 😂
Shanghai that's why it's cheaper. He's living in New York one of the most expensive city
800 dollars in Shanghai is cheap for Americans, but expensive for someone who lives in Shanghai or any part of china.
Hey Brett .am a big fan from cameroon . You inspire me everyday man
Recently came across your channel, and Ashley love it Man! Your storytelling is on point
Thanks man! appreciate it
Brett is a UA-camr, entrepreneur, and now actor. Respect 🫡
just subbed to you!
It is really enjoyable and educational. The feel good factor of saving. Will be following your channel. Thank you.
The almost 12 bucks for eggs hurts my feelings lol
Fr. In Japan, we got 20 eggs for $2 lol
That's whole foods eggs tho. I'd never buy eggs there. Ever. It feels like robbery
@@anthonymonterosso7472 where at?
@@techhabits. Shizuoka
I literally saw these very same brand of organic eggs in my Walmart in Oregon for $5.66. Like 2 hours ago.
Don't forget what a wise person once said of food, "You can pay the farmer today or pay the doctor tomorrow." Paying more money for healthier food will serve you better in the long run. Medical bills will cost you far more than a grocery bill ever will. You can cure and even treat/prevent almost any chronic illness with a healthy diet. You make super awesome videos keep it up Brett!!
Thanks for the breakdown, I always wondered how much it costs to live in NYC. So almost 6k for the basic necessities like shelter, transportation, food & drinks. I'd be curious to know how much that goes up when you include stuff like clothes, gadgets, haircuts, services, and other occasional purchases. Maybe 10k a month?
Although I don’t have an experience of living in New York but live in a different western city instead, I would still argue that this number is much higher than what it can be. Along with some of the suggestions from the video, having a roommate (or living in a cheaper area), eating out less frequently and tracking your expenses could bring it - I believe - 50% down, or even more. But this of course depends on the lifestyle and preferences, none of which are better or worse, just different for everyone 🙂
Definitely e-bike was my best investment! I lived in another major world city for almost a decade before NY and the subway was way cheaper, nicer and more frequent, so $2.90 seems crazy to me if you're not commuting too far. You can pay off the bike/scooter in less than 2-years if you commute regularly.. and feel way better everyday. Just ride careful!
Finance king and youtuber extraordinaire! Ft. the legend Alexandra Robinson
My monthly coffee expense was crazy too, especially after I started going into the office every day. But in the last month I got the Pret coffee subscription and it's been a game changer. Costs ~$40, and can get up to 5 coffees a day! I'm addicted!
hi Brett! loved the video. i was wondering, especially since you said you are a finance major - at the end of the video you talk how spending almost 6k/month in manhattan is not bad for an adult in their late 20s - how much money could an adult working a high paying job be saving every month..?
I love this video I’m going to make one for my Detroit people. Film it in June. Brett you are the bomb!
Would love one on Detroit and metro Detroit where I'm at. That would be great!
A finance major recommending $275 gym memberships lol. Best advice ever
Clothes, toiletries, cleaning supplies, insurance, haircare, gifts, technology?
Another thing I do is spring clean and make piles of like items. You’ll be surprised how much of everything you have. That you could have saved money on.
Great vid! Actually not bad for a month. Pretty on point with how much it costs to live in NYC (native New Yorker here)..
Love your videos... I enjoy your travel videos and r100 challenge ❤❤❤keep it going and 🎉pls show more of NYC restaurants and night life pls
I make my NYC coffee at home - if I am out I buy from a coffee cart only $2.00 coffee. Pack a lunch & eat in the park.

Great content!!!❤
The cheapest grocery options in Manhattan are Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and if you want to venture outside of the borough, there's a large Target with groceries in Brooklyn. Whole Foods may not seem like a bargain, but when you compare it to small mom and pop bodegas, it's actually quite reasonable, $12 eggs notwithstanding. The thing about Trader Joes is their universal pricing system. The price you pay in Manhattan is the same as what you would pay in any other city where they have outlets. The checkout lines can be long, especially for the stores in Union Square, Chelsea, or UWS, so it's best to shop in pairs. One person gets in line with the cart while the other person shops the store and brings items to the cart.
There is also an Aldi at 117 east side at the east river in the mail. Fabu prices
We usually do Amazon fresh. Delivers all to your doorstep at the time you want, and the total price is like 75% or so compared to whole foods.
His egg example is misleading, because he specifically took expensive eggs off the shelf. You can get the Whole Foods branded eggs for similar prices to Trader Joe’s eggs.
The cheapest lol? These are the most expensive ones in Chicago :).
Your apartment is gorgeous 😊
Ohhh loved seeing cash here
No matter what you spend you gotta have the cash jordan 🥳 and the coffee🧋🔥❤️
4000$ only for one room 😅
In 2000$ you can get a super luxury mansion at rent in my country 🤣
New York City isn't only Manhattan. There are many other boroughs optional if people want to save money.
How do you afford any of this as a student?
You justifying $275 for the gym is insane when there are cheaper options than equinox that still look good.
You can get a gym membership for $26 per montht at GO GYM in Chiang Mai, Thailand
That is almost $70,000 per year. I know you like travel; that would cover you for 5-6 years of amazing adventures around the world.
Wishing you well whatever you do.
I live in the bronx and it’s literally a third world country here. It’s a bit cheaper but still. I live in a rented house with my family and our monthly rent is 3000. Since I’m in college, I only have to pay internet, phone, and gas and electric bill which is usually less than $500. I go to college in Manhattan and during my break, I walk around Manhattan and check out all the buildings. I’d love to live in a condo in Manhattan. But I’m fine paying only $500 a month in my tiny bedroom in a house with parking space.
Invest in your Health. Love Equinox! It’s the Eucalyptus towels for me haha
Okay but have you been to sojo spa club? Amazing Korean spa on the other side of the river. 9 stories. Infinity pool overlooking nyc
I lived in shared apartments for lots of years. But now I want my peace, my privacy, my own space. When I get home from the office, especially in winter all I want is sit on my sofa for half an hour just wearing my underpants and relax..this is a banal example, but there’s quite a few things you can’t do when you have a roommate around. So it’s kinda sad that lots of people are like forced into getting roommates cos they can’t afford a decent studio in midtown 😢
Man I thought Ibiza was expensive til I seen this!! 🤣 Great vid.
In Melbourne the PTV is cumulative but capped
so its 4.40 per trip but it caps out at 14.50 or something havent taken PTV for a while
Never heard if equinox…I wonder whether you use it as a networking/client outlet too as im sure people paying $275 are in a different bracket…along with the better services they offer…
Im going to do a study abroad here fingers crossed but i feel i might live a bit further out of nyc and commute for a bit of balance plus i would like to travel a bit whilst im there so it makes sense live upstate or across the pond in NJ
Thank you for the video ☺️
The way Bret says coffee “CaaowFi” 😂 it’s cute
Having rich parents never hurts either.
Yeah he’s spoiled hipster
No one stopped your parents from becoming rich
@@rodneyhaxle1401 typical yuppie response.
It looks like youre not heeding that Warren Buffett quote you put up at the beginning of the video. If you are a UA-camr and work remotely, to heck with those crazy prices. Live in a small town, spend half of what you spend now and save the rest. You still get to travel all over for work, so you're not missing much in my book.
Great video, Brett! With all the recent inflation, cost of living has been top of mind for lots of people these days.
Yeah let’s go Brandon 🤦🏾♀️
If rent or mortgage was not an issue, then people could easily live a luxurious life in a minimum wage job.
I switched off mentally at nearly $300 for the gym and now watching for fun.
NICe so badass you get around on a bike. Tho idk how I feel about something you don’t have to pedal being classified as a “bike”.
Comparing prices in whole foods vs my country, the one thing that surprised me was Ben & Jerry ice cream being only 7$ while here it's 8Eur. Otherwise like milk or eggs are double or tripple the price there
$4100 for a studio is ridiculous, I only pay a quarter of that for a new 3bdr house on 1/2 an acre . 7.50 for a coffee? Try .50 for a Keurig mug of Joe. Over $5600 a month to live in a crime ridden city, not good. Watch out for yourself on the subway it could be your last ride but at least it's the cheapest thing on your list. Be safe and hopefully you don't become a statistic.
Hey hey do you have coffee sachets in NY where you can just buy a coffee sachet and add hot water and sugar and be ready to drink?
Not bad as I would have thought. I spend more in Seattle. NYC here we come!
8:42 rocking the sidetalkNYC hoodie i see
I've always wanted to get my hands on a super73
How safe is it parking your bike around the city? Ever had your tires jacked?
WOW. Transit in NYC costs way less than ours in Toronto, and we pay by distance too. 😢😢
Is the rent extortionate in Toronto as well ?
@@danielcostello4064 oh yeah, and getting worse.
Smart man too the land lord part. Knowing he might just boost your rent up a little bit higher now lol
Also because you live in an upscale neighborhood. Same in LA if you live in Beverly hills.. Santa Monica..
I come to Thailand regularly for a few months stay and spend $2,000 pm for everything, except my flight. N.Y has definitely gone off the rails with these prices.
Early
Appreciate the support, Jillian 😎
You should try how much $100 will get you in Kentucky!
The money is crazy ,I wish I could even earn half of that in a month and not in 2 year period😭
Heeey it’s Cash Jordon!!!!
So, after watching hundreds of videos of "how much it costs no live in NY" I finally got it: I can live in NY easy, I don't drink coffee.
My Nespresso machine was only $250 and totally worth it
I love your videos
I kinda feel sorry for those who live in NYC. I pay 300 € for 2 two bedroom house, 4k for one bedroom house is simply insane. I live in Portugal so If I were to move to a new place I'd say currently I would have to pay atleast 600€ for the same type of house (I live close to the capital) but still, it's nowhere close to that price tag.
👋Hiii Brett Big Fan I love all your videos.
Stack sats before it’s too late
You spent 3 times the average salary in my city😭🙏 (I live in Rome) personally I think it’s crazy but at the same time it amazes me so many ppl can afford that in nyc
Brother, I go to Sams club and get 60 egg count carton for $8 bucks and some change. Yikes.
Cool video
Thank you Will 😎
The prices at Whole Foods were...nice
Theoretically, if you wanted to afford his rent and spend no more than 30% of your income (suggested) you would need to make 130k annually before taxes 😮
3:50 whoa over $4,000 for a one bedroom In Manhattan wow 😮 I agree ☝️ with what Jordan says you want to get a roommate to save money 💵 on rent
As someone that lives in Bangalore, the prices I’ve seen in this video here today is absolutely blowing my fucking mind
11$ for eggs ? Are they from the same chickens that work for KFC ?
🤣
Is New York chocked 🗽
If you were my landlord watching this lmao … landlord has left the chat
Holy jeebus that’s a lot of money
I see bret i like the video!!
I’m sure there are cheaper grocery options, and less eating out or cheaper spots.
“A coffee maker ad disguised”
I spend that much in south Texas right on the border! Probably even more
When the video starts off with "as a finance major" you know this isn't necessarily the experience of your average New Yorker lmao.
how much is you making per month?
My current total mobthly expense is $200 max in south africa . $5000 p/m for cost of living is mind blowing to me , but then again its a developed country so standard of living must be costly too.
6k$ for a living. In my country you can live on 1k with your partner and feel good. I definitely have a space for extending my borders
Hello friend how are U. How perfect your vidio. Enjoy your beautiful day with delicious coffe.god bless U. Hope U always happy and goid healthy
And it's the financial major docks that made that place unaffordable
