something i never hear anyone but me point out is that; when you pop the board, your back foot should shove behind you so the board gets just a little bit less momentum than your body, which will help the friction of the board stay in contact with your front foot and give a really good bone-out feel
I've seen this in action on videos before and I feel like nobody mentions it. I think it is something that people tend to overlook because its "just part of the technique"
@@caesurabreak3528it's important to pop "backwards" a tiny bit, as this motion helps counteract the forwards slide that moves your board more out in front of you. If that happens, your board feels less connected to you, and you're naturally going to have lower Ollie's since you can't properly stay over your board or level it out nice enough or simply use that slide to get your Ollie a tad higher
Ollies are the foundation for nearly all tricks, including for snowboarding, surfing, kiteboarding and wing foiling. Thanks for explaining it in simple terms. This is an excellent video short.
Jonny you start at Step 1: pop, but step 1 should be: jump first, when your weight is off the deck and your back foot starts to leave the tail, then pop by pushing your toes to the ground using the rear ankle. I see so many beginners try to pop while still standing on the board, which is useless. Let me know what you think?
One thing I noticed that makes my Ollie's a lot cleaner is that there is a slight roll forward before you pop your board. It helps quite a lot for some reason to do that little wind up for me at least.
It’s because you push the board forward the direction you’re rolling when you pop an Ollie. That’s what makes it scary to beginners. Feels like you’ll slip out backwards
@@stpedro-ht9ng so as far as body mechanics and skateboard physics you think I'm on the right track to making my Ollie's better? Cuz some people say that it's better to pop back if you know what I mean but I'm still learning so I'm not so sure.
@@superiorlongboards yup the right idea isn't really leaning back but having your back straightened out the whole way. It isn't leaning in either direction but it tends to feel like leaning back because your weight is usually on your front foot.
Hardest step for newbs like me is the crucial step of committing to getting mint that back foot on without fear of rolling out. After riding for years and taking my share of spills… I’m finally getting closer and closer. I’ve been “skating” for years, but I’m barely getting interested in tricks. I’m comfy cruising but I’m still getting over that fear of being in the air and gambling my ankles 😂 by the end of this year I’ll have em down
Now the hardest thing is for years all I have known is Ollie variations so my back foot is TOO trained to never come off the board completely. Good luck to me learning flip tricks as I can never commit 😭
definitely this. When I started, I couldn't figure out why my ollies would end with the nose turning about 45 degrees making me unable to ride out of it. Turns out I had a bad habit of my shoulders facing more in the direction I was rolling instead of being square with the board/my feet
Day 3 of coming back to skating after 12 year hiatus the first day I landed a shuv it, kick flip, back side some manual and some Ollie’s since then I have built a manual pad ,grind rail and a bank 😂😂😂 I’m hooked again bad I almost got a 3 flip today and damn are my hamstrings sore
Ollie’ing by tapping the tip led me to bad habits that I later had to unlearn. I recommend against doing that. Learning to scoop the board when popping it, trying to get it as vertical as possible while keeping your back foot near the concave is better advice because it gives better control (and later when you learn tricks, it’ll be that much more simple to control the board, especially on rotational tricks). The placement of my front foot determines how high, much spin, or rotation I get, but my back foot basically stays in the same spot around the concave. Also, be aware if youre making the board lean forward or backward, it should be as flat as possible when you pop it, think of it as if there were water on it and you wanted to keep it as level as possible to not let any of the water spill. Lots of beginners lean forward/backward because their balance is off, especially when they pop because they do not go straight up and down and tend to lean forward and distribute their weight over their toes which makes their board lean forward and causes flat as pops or the board to turn when they pop it.
It took me a long time too. Now i can kickflip and pop shuv easily, and i can ollie over three boards stacked sideways. All i did was practice. You got this man.
Find a good coach. Somebody at the park who k ows what they are doing and can probably help you. Ask lots of people for help. Skate a lot. You'll figure it out. It's all technique. You need to pop and jump at the same time and stay over your skateboard. The sliding motion doesn't exactly make your board go "higher". Instead, the sliding motion actually levels your board out by bringing the tail in the air, so that you don't "rocket ship ollie". Stay over your board, and just pop hard and jump at the same time, and stay over your board. Do it a million times. Cheers mate. (Pop straight down, and keep the ball of your foot centered in the middle of the tail)
This clip popped up in my feed. Couldn't see who the skater was, but then i saw the mountain in the background and was like "ah, it's Johnny Giger" xD.
I’ve been practicing my Ollie’s for only 2 days now and I think I’ve failed like 57 times already, so maybe this video will help me do it the right way lol XD
Tip: you don't have to place you're foot in the middle in some cases this might make things harder to land. The more higher you want to olllie the more back you're front foot should be (I usually place my foot right on the second set of the front bolts.)
The important tip that Johnny didn't say, is that YOU SHOULD BEND YOUR BACK FOOT IN YOUR STOMACH AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, and then press your front foot down while flicking it forward.
bro i’ve been trying this for like 2 days and i’m so fucking angry at myself for not being perfect at it, when I literally have been practicing for 2 days, i know it’s stupid and i know i’m just making my progress slower but i’m just PISSED I hate being a perfectionist

Impossible when I slide my feet forward whenever I jump in my skateboard moves away from me. If I try to jump forward, my skateboard goes back so it’s impossible.
For some reason when i ollie my backfoot never stays on the back of the board and always moves up the board towards my front foot. Is this normal because when i watch videos of people ollie their backfoot stays in place
by far the best skateboard trick
It's basically every trick at some point. Kickflip, etc. use it for sure
The kickflip is technically called the "Ollie kickflip"
Tell me more
Literally. Gelfand & Tatum hitting the FS and BS versions in a bowl changed skating forever. Rodney took it to the street and the rest is history.

@skullface691 100%. I started to get magnetic feeling ollies after i started emphasizing the back foot moving backwards motion.
This. I am still learning proper ollies and that tiny little “roll back” seems to be the key. I could never put it into words. Thanks.
