Thanks for putting up this video! I’m a skater from the 80’s and this was such a milestone for us when we finally learned. We didn’t have anyone to teach us (and this was before the internet) so all we could do was watch a Bones Brigade video or Gleaming the Cube, or watch an older skater from our town. And our town had less than 4000 people in it and hardly anyone skated. But when we did witness it it was like magic. It was the way I imagined people felt watching the first airplane fly. It seemed impossible. There was no ramp, no engine, no springs. But skaters could get more air than bmx’ers and they were on flat pavement. It was the holy grail for us - all other tricks were based on it. It was the price of admission for getting radical. We would watch each other to see if any of our ‘pops’ resulted in the tail leaving the ground. “You were airborne dude! Only a couple centimeters, but you were in the air!” The dream of being able to Ollie onto a curb seemed impossible. We spent long sessions working on it. I remember taking a break from watching MacGuyver to go out to my driveway for a weekday late night session. Eventually we all learned, one at a time. I was the first - I had my ‘89 Hawk ‘Claw’ mini and I nailed it one day. My friend Pete was next on his Cab with the ‘Dragon/Bat’ graphic, and then Jeremy. He rode a McGill Snake/Skull with the spoon nose. It was awesome. Seeing the comments on here of groms nailing it just like that - some one their first try - is awesome. And anybody who’s having trouble because they didn’t get it in the first 8 minutes, don’t worry! It took us MONTHS to get it and we practiced every day! Lol And even then, I didn’t have the awesome glue foot style of my skating bud Jeremy (RIP bro). I learned first but he had way better technique. So don’t worry about how fast you learn and skate at your own pace, you’ll get there!
Same. Started in '87, wore out Public Domain, a few of us skated in my town, tutorials like this + the amount of skateparks now makes me a bitter jealous 47 old lol 😂
@@davidcrawford8583 One of my two best friends (and fellow groms) had a brother who was 15 years older and a major organizer in the W Mass skate scene - he ran the annual Skate Camp, worked at the old ‘On Ramp’ skate shop in Hadley, etc. Eventually he got a job with Burton. He grew up in a town called Northampton, right next to where I grew up. It looked like New York by comparison lol. But while we skated every little spot where we lived, he told us about these “legendary” Northampton spots. There was a small concrete drainage ditch on the outskirts (which just got demolished), “the great pyramids” (which were really just some oversized speed bumps) in an alley, a nice little set of stairs, etc. Eventually we got our folks to leave us off in town and we hunted down and skated all these landmarks. This was our idea of a skatepark :) When I see the real skatepark built 10+ years ago in Northampton only minutes from where I live, I think back and just laugh to myself. It’s got one of the best outdoor concrete bowls in the state. I feel like the old WW1 era guys that used to tell us “back in my day, we played kick the can! What are these new skateboard contraptions you got here? How do they work?” Our first ever spot in my little town (Hatfield) was a couple of curbs at an old age home, and the old folks used to come out and watch and try to understand “this new generation” lol.
@@catsooey Totally understand. Not just in skating, but in life, as you get older you turn into those WW1 guys. With skating, in the UK, living in a small village we had very few places to skate. One place was a loading bay undercover which we could get into, that was like Heaven for us. I miss skating so much, I still have my Tony Hawk Birdhouse deck, Venture Trucks and Spitfire 97A's, My daughter is thinking about starting to skate who's 10.
Idk who you are or what kinda of sorcery you did... but thank you so much, thanks to this video I mange to land my 1st ever ollie. This is deffentifly 100% the best ollie video on UA-cam.
i’ve been practicing for 2 days using other tutorials and it was so hard (maybe landed 3 or 4) but when i found this video it just made so much sense and after 20-30 mins i can now ollie successfully nearly every time
Longboarder here. Snapped my cheap longboard doing a trick and decided I prefer doing tricks to cruising. Watching this video as I’m about to order a new skateboard. Got a feeling I’m gonna learn how to Ollie within a week thanks to this video.
@@NeverStopImprovingSB update: got the board today and practiced ollies for around two hours straight after school. It’s absolutely insane but I can now do stationary ollies (still working on consistency). I’ll keep working at it everyday to increase my pop height and also learn to do it while moving. Your videos are a blessing man 👍✨
This actually helped me a lot I had my phone in hand listening to the video while watching and just followed what you did and landed it mid video, thx so much bro.
Not even a minute ago I took a decent fall practicing and my board slid out under my feet and I just sat there for a second and was like “so this is what learning feels like” got back up and kept trying

This guy is a possibly the best youtuber at breaking down tricks.. his methods actually work after you learn his way you obviously need refine it as only a short video but it works. amazing help thank you!
This is a great tutorial. I already knew how to ollie going into watching this so I can't attest to it's effectiveness, but it seems like a great way to teach someone. My method to teach people is; 1. Stand stationary on board. 2. Put all weight on tail, stand there (as in, only back wheels and tail (of the board) on ground.) 3. Go back and forth between those. 4. After a few, stand with all of your weight on the tail, and just practice sliding the side of your front foot along the griptape, towards the front of the board (just to get your body comfortable with that feeling). 5. Slowly combine those steps, and when you feel comfortable add "a jump, straight up in the air". With all of that said, the method in this video seems like it would be way more effective. My method was more so "Learn to ollie in a few hours", lol. The "sliding your foot" helps with learning kickflips (and I guess heelflips, although I've never taught someone how to heelflip like that), as well. Love the message of this channel, hate to see people in the community not supporting everyone, including newbies/aspiring skaters etc. So thanks for helping keep the metaphorical train chuggin.
I cannot thank you enough for this tutorial! Assumed learning it in 8 minutes was greatly exaggerating but with no prior practice I could do a decently high Ollie after 10 minutes
Rmb to learn to slide your foot up the board once you get comfortable with these steps as an advanced tip :D (this vid was really instructional especially that jumping part)
Yes sir! Very important! haha I definitely didn't have enough time left after 8 minutes to go over all of the finer details of getting it perfect, but I really appreciate you guys 'jumping' ;) in and helping out in the comments 🤜🤛
I have been praticing from another youtube channel for a week and i couldnt do it but when i came to you i could do it in 30 minutes thankyou very much
Thanks, it's well done and informative. As far as I can tell, your back foot should not be in contact with the board anymore when the board touches the ground. Your body should already be in the air. Otherwise, your foot just clamps the board to the ground, and prevents ollieing. The ollie also makes a very different sound depending on where your back foot is during the pop. It feels weird/magical, but it seems to be supported by slow-mo videos of ollies.
I cannot thank u anymore. Today I tried it for the first time on carpet (I was holding on to something a little bit) but I managed to land my first Ollie after 4 tries. THANK YOU!!
Father (aged 39) and Son (aged 11) both tried this method today. Managed to get the front wheels quite high. Back wheels came up about 1cm off the ground 😂😂😂 Were both beginners so hoping to make progress!
I'm 41 and I did an ollie once in my life. The I quit skating, and there's been like 10 years since... Thinking about starting over again with the hobby. This video really helped me not just as advice but also as encouragement, so thank you very much for uploading this.
Just got back into skateboarding after a few years, I can drop in and ride okay but my ollies where never consistent, this has helped loads and I'm better than I was already! Thankyou so much dude
I had to write a comment here even though I usually never write anything. Something about this video clicked for me, after about a week of trying to Ollie and getting no where I watched this tutorial twice and after about an hour of practice I did it. Now I can Ollie every time. Thank you so much. I’m 39 years old and I needed this.
I've been tryna learn Ollie for 2 years . I've still haven't learnt it but I'm gonna try using ur video. I must say ur video looks amazing and it's the first time I've seen such a good video on the Ollie cuz everywhere I go they teach it conplicatidly. the best video so far. I will keep u updated on my progress buddy. thanks for sharing such good content!
Justin this is the BEST step by step instructions for learning how to do an Ollie. I really appreciate all your time and effort you put into this video. I haven’t skated in decades and have never done any tricks. So this is going to be awesome! Please keep making these kinds of videos. Thanks again man!
I've watched a bunch of "how to ollie" videos and this one is by far the best! Approaches the technique in a totally different way compared with others I watched. Most of them just explained something along the lines of popping the board, dragging your foot along and jumping all at the same time, which I just couldn't make sense of and work out. I think the others go about it in completely the wrong way, as the act of jumping, lifting the front foot off first as taught here, is really what creates the movement... SO glad I found this video!!
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH i learned how to do a Ollie in 30 minutes witch makes me SOOOO happy I’ve been trying to do it for like a year now but u thought me how keep up the fantastic work
@@NeverStopImprovingSB i know this is late but i thought u should be sliding ur foot to the nose of the board after the pop? if not pls tell me where the slide is (after the jump/pop) as im trying to learn an ollie
Dude, I'm not sure if you know how helpful this video has been but I'm going to let you know. I just recently picked skateboarding back up as a 26-year-old and I haven't skated since I was 15. I quit because I went through two skateboards ( broke the tail off both of them) and a Year's worth of time, I absolutely could not Ollie. I lived in the country so a skateboard as transportation wasn't a thing. So I gave up, and after watching your videos I was legit popping the board off the ground in a day and now 3 days later I'm doing full blown ollie's. You have revived skating for me. Thank you sir.
thanks a lot! this is the best ollie tutorialever on UA-cam! i landed the first ollie of my lifetime today. i had been praticing for 3 days, may seem more but I only practice for 30-45 mins each day. now I sm able to land 8 out of 10 ollies with both my foot on the board. i have a nickel board btw. I am able to land ollies stationery ollies in grass. Now the next step is stationery ollies on pavements.
It took me 30 mins to do it try to do the each step at least 3 times. Like 1 mins of first step take gap of 30 seconds and do it again do all the steps I never had done a ollie in my life this is the best video on UA-cam you can find but keep practicing until you master it. Thank you so much for making this video
This is honestly the best ollie tutorial I've ever seen. I did my first baby ollie today! Still needs some work but I'm just happy I was able to land one :)
This litterly the most helpful ollie tutorial I've seen Thank you so much, I landed my first ollie within 20 minutes thanks to your video Keep up the great tutorials man 🔥
This is by far the best Ollie video I have seen because it actually shows what to do since all the other videos just say “ok now pop up the board” and I’m here questioning how to do that yet you explain it perfectly
Omg THANK YOU! Landed in grass and with a crack. This is so easy to follow along with and I got it! I’ve been skating like 3 times so it’s really good for beginners!
man, youre the 🐐, i dont know how to do an ollie for like 4 month since i bought my skate, after watch this video, just 2 DAYS LATER, i can do my ollie, huge thanks man✌️
I've been watching this video for some days now and I've finally learned how to do an Ollie because of you! I'm so happy that I can finally do it I have been trying for four months and I learned it in three days because of you. Keep up the good work:)
best ollie tutorial on youtube, this man is a great teacher. so many other videos have way too much emphasis on the ankle moving forwards and not the popping and landing (most important part)
@@NeverStopImprovingSB Agreed (with @SpecialK574 ). The scariest thing about an ollie is being able to land it, so makes sense to learn that bit first, but that didn't come to me until you explained it. Seems like you know how to teach and how to explain things to people who don't already understand what you are explaining. Will let you know how I get on.
That is so fricken cool man! I realized that once you learn the ollie, the whole world opens up in front of you. Like regular curbs, sidewalks, stairsets start looking like massive urban playgrounds made just for us =D
First of all, thank you so much! The reason I couldn’t Ollie was because no other video taught me to lift my front foot first. That deserves a like and a sub!
Hey this helped me so much. I ollied my first day. Something I really need to emphasize and I feel like he should’ve gone more in depth in is the slide!!!! It’s probably like 70 percent of the Ollie and once I started sliding my foot to the nose I got perfect ollies. Next month I will update you on the tricks I can do
Thanks so much! I've been skating for ~3 years and since I'm basically fluent at just skating I wanted to start learning tricks and after 2 months of trying, watching videos , going to the park and watching others I kept getting so close , but I never got it... Turns out I just had to change my jump(front leg first) and now I'm kinda getting it!
Wow. Got my first skateboard yesterday tried to Ollie for 3 hours and never got it. Today I got it in 10 minutes. I like how you never once say to push down on the tail. You just take your front foot off first and let physics do the work.

I really think the whole wrist guard recommendation should come with some important additional advice. Because _no_ pad will prevent arms or wrists or elbows from breaking when you assume it can take full impact in a slam and keep everything extended, because you're wearing pads. The reason why knee pads in vert ramps work is because you use them to slide down (and folds legs under you). You don't use them to take full impact either. This is very underrated commentary on using protective gear. Needless to say, wearing a helmet is _always_ a good idea. Keep those limb bend and roll out, don't extend and take the full impact. You'll break bones. Some of the worst slams where you could hit your head, will also come out of nowhere wiping out hard. I'd also recommend beginners to try to land on a board with knees bend very consciously. Maybe even show what happens when you land with one or two extended / stiff legs, because that's usually an instant wipe out. If you land on just the tail or middle of the board with one foot, but have that knee bend / crouched, the board will pretty much never shoot out from under. Last but not least, the key to falling is really trying to 'roll out', making sure the energy from impact isn't taken head on, but gets transferred in ways that don't hurt or damage. Why can experienced skaters take slams down an 8 or 10 stair set? Well, most likely because he or she knows how to 'go with the flow' and roll out of a slam.
@@NeverStopImprovingSB Thanks :D Also, thanks for the video. Even though I got ollies, I'm still improving them every time I skate. So this still helps.
There's a video somewhere of a large cat tumbling and leaping off a cliff, and just walking away. The trick is to turn the fall into a leap so it can be controlled. The Parkour discipline uses this philosophy as well, but that's not how it started out.
bro this gusy jsut taught me how to ollie at midnight in my room after days of not getting it. and i got it not perfectly but rright away while watching this, best tutorial and it never hurts to start from scratch
To any new skaters here there’s a couple things to remember: get comfortable riding your board before you mess with ollies. Once you’re comfortable riding regular, practice riding switch and try to learn how to manual and power slide. I’m not saying you have to completely master those things before trying to Ollie but I promise you will have a much easier time learning how to Ollie once you build confidence riding your board. And also… don’t give up you got this! And ignore the feedback from people in the beginning just think about it as the initiation into the community.
I explained these exercices to my 8 year old and he was able to his first ollie ! Thanks a lot ! Now he just has to practice a bit more and refined the technics.
I don’t think he dose it but if you want to go higher up in the jump then do it this vid is for beginners but slide your foot if you want a higher Ollie

When you pop an ollie, the board orients itself with how your shoulders are rotated, so you need to focus on keeping your shoulders straight when during the whole trick

Yup
i’ve been practicing for 2 days using other tutorials and it was so hard (maybe landed 3 or 4) but when i found this video it just made so much sense and after 20-30 mins i can now ollie successfully nearly every time
Also make sure you’re comfortable on your board! It’s much harder to learn without having correct level/technique.

@Milla H good shit bro, hope you progress jus stick with it it's all about time and effort fr
@Milla H great! it's good to have someone to give you tips
Longboarder here. Snapped my cheap longboard doing a trick and decided I prefer doing tricks to cruising. Watching this video as I’m about to order a new skateboard. Got a feeling I’m gonna learn how to Ollie within a week thanks to this video.
It's going to work! It's all about having the right mindset 👍

My method to teach people is;
1. Stand stationary on board.
2. Put all weight on tail, stand there (as in, only back wheels and tail (of the board) on ground.)
That is truly insanity 🤯
Rmb to learn to slide your foot up the board once you get comfortable with these steps as an advanced tip :D (this vid was really instructional especially that jumping part)
Yes sir! Very important! haha I definitely didn't have enough time left after 8 minutes to go over all of the finer details of getting it perfect, but I really appreciate you guys 'jumping' ;) in and helping out in the comments 🤜🤛
I have been praticing from another youtube channel for a week and i couldnt do it but when i came to you i could do it in 30 minutes thankyou very much
That is incredible!
Worked so well and unexpectedly, I missed realizing I accomplished my first Ollie until my friend started shouting "u did it!". 😁 Thanks!!!
These observations are spot on sir!
Thank you bro these were my biggest issues
I cannot thank u anymore. Today I tried it for the first time on carpet (I was holding on to something a little bit) but I managed to land my first Ollie after 4 tries. THANK YOU!!
That's what's up! Nice job, keep going dude!! 🛹
Very cool, I'm glad to hear your story!
That is fricken awesome man, way to stick with it and nice work getting your ollies down. What's next on your list if you don't mind me asking?
I've been tryna learn Ollie for 2 years . I've still haven't learnt it but I'm gonna try using ur video. I must say ur video looks amazing and it's the first time I've seen such a good video on the Ollie cuz everywhere I go they teach it conplicatidly. the best video so far. I will keep u updated on my progress buddy. thanks for sharing such good content!
YO THIS IS GOOODDDD the tip of just lifting front foot instead of just popping helped immensely
Justin this is the BEST step by step instructions for learning how to do an Ollie. I really appreciate all your time and effort you put into this video. I haven’t skated in decades and have never done any tricks. So this is going to be awesome! Please keep making these kinds of videos. Thanks again man!
I appreciate all the love and the fact that you re-typed all this out! Awesome work 👌
I've watched a bunch of "how to ollie" videos and this one is by far the best!
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH i learned how to do a Ollie in 30 minutes witch makes me SOOOO happy I’ve been trying to do it for like a year now but u thought me how keep up the fantastic work
Awesome job! 🤘🤘
That is so epic dude, rock on 💪
Thank you man I finally got my first Ollie down I feel amazing now
That is fricken awesome dude, stay frosty!
thanks a lot! this is the best ollie tutorialever on UA-cam! i landed the first ollie of my lifetime today. i had been praticing for 3 days, may seem more but I only practice for 30-45 mins each day. now I sm able to land 8 out of 10 ollies with both my foot on the board. i have a nickel board btw. I am able to land ollies stationery ollies in grass. Now the next step is stationery ollies on pavements.
I finally landed my first ollie yesterday with this tutorial! Thank you so much for making this video 🙌
This is ONLY THE BEGINNING!! Haha yes let's GOO!!
It took me 30 mins to do it try to do the each step at least 3 times. best ollie tutorial on youtube, this man is a great teacher. so many other videos have way too much emphasis on the ankle moving forwards and not the popping and landing (most important part)
You are so nice to say these things, thank you!!
The part about jumping on the board was very helpful! It definitely helped me get closer to doing my first ollie!
the emphasis on the jump seriously helped, I've finally been able to do it, I'm 23 and I've been skating for like 3 years now 😭😭😭

Haha you ROCK! Thank you so much XD
A lot of other tutorials didn’t show to jump with your front foot first, this helped a bunch.
I remember watching your older video on how to Ollie 8 months ago and now Im able to jump onto stuff!
That is so fricken cool man! I realized that once you learn the ollie, the whole world opens up in front of you. Like regular curbs, sidewalks, stairsets start looking like massive urban playgrounds made just for us =D

Hey this helped me so much. I ollied my first day. Something I really need to emphasize and I feel like he should’ve gone more in depth in is the slide!!!!
This is brilliantly stated!

What’s manual and power slide 😅
I explained these exercices to my 8 year old and he was able to his first ollie ! Thanks a lot ! Now he just has to practice a bit more and refined the technics.

When you pop an ollie, the board orients itself with how your shoulders are rotated, so you need to focus on keeping your shoulders straight when during the whole trick
