  • UPDATE: The full Tale of Derpla can be found here! :) • THE TALE OF DERPLA - T...
This little baby caique got badly neglected by its parents and the growth was 3-4 weeks delayed. My breeder friend asked my help and we decided to pull the baby to be handfed to save its life. And, if I would manage to grow this baby up, I could keep it. Because handfeeding can cause many problems, I wanted to include bird company as soon as possible. But, it's not always so easy. Caiques are a bit hot tempered and there is a risk that the adult could hurt the baby. So, I took little steps when introducing thes two for each other. Pyro, my adul white-bellied caique, showed only one little sign of aggression when the baby flapped its wings - but in the end, it would seem that this meeting went much better than expected. Take a look. ^^

Thank you for saving that sweet baby parrot! How gentle you are with them both. Lovely to watch the interaction! Good owner = Happy and well adjusted birds.

So fortunate that Pyro chose to accept the chick. Caiques are all or nothing, so it was going to be very good or NOT. I've seen how much that little one grew! Great job raising that baby!

Hi Adwen! Thank you so much! Yeah, I've definitely noticed the same. All or nothing! This autumn Pyro has unfortunately started to behave more aggressively towards Derpla, the baby. Derpla was DNA tested and he is also a male. Every now and then they are ok together, but at the moment they can't be together without monitoring. That's a shame. :/ Then again Pyro tends to be the quee- king of mood swings. Sometimes he just behaves and is all nice. But even a minor thing in routines might make him go all grumpy caique. -__- If you have any tips, I'd be glad to hear. I'm great with cockatiels and basically grew up with them, but I've only had two caiques so I am not an expert on that species. They are so completely different! Anyways, if you are interested, here's the full story of Derpla: ua-cam.com/video/4tZvEKWJVhI/v-deo.html

That is so good on you for making sure the baby had bird contact, not many people realize that handrearing a bird is not cute and should not be done unless the circumstances are special like this, hand rearing them without other parrot contact can cause them to look for mates in humans, not parrots so they get frustrated in us when we groom them even just by plucking pin feathers from the head and neck (you should never touch a mature bird any lower as they have sexual glands under the wings) because we're showing the signs that we want to mate but don't actually start the courtship process, making them turn mean and aggressive, what you've done here is exactly the right thing, with fellow bird contact this little one will hopefully look for birds as mates and not humans, bless your heart.

Shinyhunterlobo and ShinyhunterRaven don't know if you already watched the video showing the baby birds journey but actually by the time she got the baby bird, the baby already knew to mate with birds and not human which is why she took in the birdy ~

Shiny: There are no "sex glands" under the wings. What would they be? Not shown in any anatomy book.

@@KB4QAA uh check again, the erogenous zones of a bird are under the wings by the thighs, the chest, the wings, the back between the wings and the tail, just search up erogenous zones of a bird and that'll tell you every spot you can't and shouldn't touch

I'm just seeing your video, two yrs. after you published it, lol, and I'm glad I did!! I must admit I cried with you when I saw Pyro beginning to preen the baby!!😚🐦 Birds are a reflection of their humans and Pyro is Glowing with love and calmness. My heart warms to see such acceptance! If only us humans were so patient with one another! I'm curious about this Lil duo & I'm now going to look for updates on them. Take care from one bird mommy to another! 🐦❤🐦 I have a pair of Quaker Parrots that I adopted (adults who are Very hand shy 😯 and I'm tirelessly working on that!😓) and 3 Parakeets, 1 adult & 2 toddlers. They're a bright spot in my day!

A bit of a stretch, I know, but some parrots can be attached to their humans like a mate. What if a reason why he started preening the chick is because he assumed it was hers?

Well caiques either kill or accept other birds smaller. It is often advised that if you have one, don't have it around smaller birds much unless you're experienced like this woman.
