    I got my Caique Ollie 18yrs ago, he was 4 months old. He certainly doesn't hanker for another bird friend. My husband and I along with our 2 shelties are his flock. He walks on the floor, climbs on the dogs for extra leverage as they are not good flyers since they are top of the rainforest feeders, making them great climbers. When I come home from work I put him over the bin in the kitchen and he does his poopy, then he hangs out either on my head or shoulder as I prepare dinner. He has often waded through my cereal without his waders, hung out on the edge of my dish at dinner time and in the evening after he helps me do the washing up he relaxes with me. Sometimes we only watch tv, sometimes we quilt and sometimes we do tidy ups etc. Yes, there are a few poopy stops in between all this, and some snacking for him. then later in the night about an hour before my bedtime he will fall asleep on my chest, just wander over, drop down, put his little claw over his beak and fall asleep. I help him do his preening, and he has some gob smacking kisses. These little guys are totally AWESOME!!!

He is very in tune with me, he licks my tears if I cry, that would be because they are salty, he is very well behaved if I am not well and he goes to bed at night without a cover. I love him like I would a child.

      @olygarcia5943 5 років тому

      Cassuttus Tshirt when your bird hit maturity at 3 to 4 years old. Does it become more territorial and attached to just one person? I’m planning on buying one as a family pet but all the people I meet at a bird shops discourages from buying one because of their wild nature. All my kids are teen agers already. They say they can turn on you and become wilder when they hit maturity at 3 or 4 years old. Did you experience that with your birds?

    • @Snookfly
      @Snookfly 4 роки тому

      @@olygarcia5943 - Hello, Oly. We have a male white belly, and he's about 5 now. He's a blast, but is definitely a "headstrong" animal, and commonly tests his boundaries. We've had birds before, and know how to handle his tests. It's important that if you have one inclined to test you, that you handle him in the proper way for him to always know he is not the alpha animal, or he will potentially become bossy / "aggressive" (just their way of exerting their dominance). You can't let them think that they are the boss (like many kinds of animals). I've heard and antecdotally seen female caiques are less dominant and easier to handle. Generally speaking, they are "perpetual 2 yr olds", that really require much attention. They will bond strongly with you and others in the family - probably having a favorite, but wanting to be with everyone at the same time (they seem to like "the flock" being together) . I highly recommend getting a hatchling to strengthen that bond, although it requires a frequent feeding schedule with an eyedropper (possibly every 4 hrs? I forget). I'd have to say they are probably not good for a first time bird owner, as they can get quite "fiesty" when they mature, which some equate with being aggressive /mean/unfriendly, but it's not really - just doing what birds do to determine their "pecking order" to see who is the boss. In summary, they are a real joy and laugh-out-loud funny, but sometimes a test of your patience as well. Good luck!

    • @cassuttustshirt4949
      @cassuttustshirt4949 4 роки тому

      @@rashasarandah1695 Larry Cohen's post is on point, and says a lot of things I would have said. And if the kids are old enough to know how to handle and treat the bird, they should be fine with kids. Some birds tend to bond to one person, caiques bond with a family. You are their 'flock'. Another thing I'd like to add is that they NEED attention and people around. They are so, so social. Anyway, take all this with a grain of salt, it is all anecdotal from living with a single caique for 15 or so years now. Like people, they all have different personalities.

      As for price, we got ours from a small but reputable breeder in the Portland area for 500 each. • @MangoKiwiCaiques
      @MangoKiwiCaiques  7 років тому

      Bilquis Wadoodi - We decided on females after doing some research and conversing with a couple local parrot stores and our parrot breeder. Our understanding was that females might prove to be more docile over time, with less potential for aggression. I don't know if that's true, but it was our thinking.
      We chose to go with two females instead of a male / female pair to help avoid potential nesting and/or mating concerns. Again, that was our personal choice, but I think that is a fair point to consider. Good luck with your pair! Let us know what you decided.
      Oh, as for the Java tree... I don't recall exactly the price. We bought it new from a local parrot store. I'm guessing it was somewhere in the 200-300 dollar range, but sorry I don't recall exactly. It was expensive, but we really liked the shape of it. They love it and still use it every single day. It has held up well.

    • @MangoKiwiCaiques
      @MangoKiwiCaiques  7 років тому

      That's a tough call... We decided not to get a male and female to avoid any issues with mating. And we were concerned that two males might have more issues with aggression. That's why we settled on two females. So in your case, I'm not sure. I think maybe I would go with a female. But we're not experts on this matter. I would probably speak with someone or research it a bit. We'll be interested to hear what you decided. But I do agree with the idea of a play mate. They are so energetic, they really need a companion that can keep up with their energy level.
