It definitely is missing Grant Danasty. Especially the drama where he's in love with Sypha Belnades but she doesn't return the same especially what he does when Sypha and Trevor get married. And not to mention when Death turned Grant into a monster.
Come to think of it, if the show did work in Grant, then that could have made for another neat moment in the finale. During the final episode, Sypha spends days in grief after Trevor has seemingly died, leaving his wife and child behind. The first two seasons could have had Grant developing romantic interests in Sypha, before he sees that she wants Trevor and lets the two go off together. Later in Season 4, Grant could help Alucard defend the castle and be glad to see Trevor and Sypha again. But then, Trevor appears to die sacrificing himself. There could be a scene, where Grant finally admits his feelings for Sypha and even offers to help raise her child. When Trevor turns out to be alive, Grant’s interaction beforehand could potentially add to both the humor and drama. It could be funnier, in that Grant finally admits his feelings and Sypha considers it, only for fate to c*ckblock him immediately. But this could also make it sweeter, in that Sypha knows how Grant has always felt, yet he wants what is best for her nonetheless and celebrates Trevor’s comeback with everyone else.
You could do SO MUCH with a rogue named after one of the royal families of Wallachia. Picture it, "last heir of royal family fakes death, becomes criminal, forms a resistance and fights Count Dracula, only for his resistance to get slaughtered and himself turned into a demon" Both Konami and Ellis seem to have this absolute hatred of Grant, for some reason. I cannot fathom why.
Breaks the spirit, doesn't it? Plus a happy ending to that storyline would have been a good way to get the Belmont name out of the dungheap. Restoring the country's long-lost future king goes a long way, enough to make Trevor and future Belmonts national heroes again.
@@TheDeadmanstrolling Since Netflix bungled it, we'll just have to get by with fanfiction until Konami gets over whatever problem they have with Grant.
I'll even add to this. "After being saved by Trevor and Sypha, Grant joins them, but the experience of being turned into a demon and his fight with Dracula prior has left his confidence shattered. Compared to Alucard, Sypha and Trevor, Grant has to regain his courage and confidence once more seeing as (maybe aside from Alucard) he's the only one who actually fought Dracula and lived." We just wrote a more compelling story for Grant that an overrated writer couldn't be bothered to do.
@@UmisTsukishiro00 Thank you for reminding me of this bit of info. Here's the perfect material should a more faithful adaptation give a damn about adding Grant into the story.
It pissses me off, he's not in because Warren doesn't like this name which is just ridiculous Then they talk about a guy called the pirate of the lands, there's multiple characters who can be Grant Then they make a town of Danesti, I get it it's a reference to the Danesti Family of Wallachia but serious Grant lead a group to fight Dracula but their all slaughtered and he's turned into a monster He's one of the heroes to kill Dracula but just because that nimrod doesn't like his name he's not shown just mention and teased The show is a amazing but I personally like Grant, wanted to see more of him and the Danesti Family if there's still any survivors
Grant DiNasti, the common thief who have his whole family assassinated by Dracula's forces. Who could rise a small army to bravely defiant Dracula himself. Who later was acknowledge by Dracula himself for such feat to the point to be enlisted by force, becoming a demon in the process. Later, to be freed by Trevor/Ralph and becoming his first ally against the hordes from Hell. Yeah, that guy surely isn't main character material. Shout out to Locke from Final Fantasy III/VI. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Adapting Grant out is just one of the reasons the show left me disheartened. Cutting out the cabal of OCs would have left room for him, and taking advantage of the fact he's named after Wallachia's royal family would have made for a cool character arc. Picture it: Last surviving heir to the throne ran away to play pirate, then adventures and new friends convince him to become king. Greta of Danesti was a twist of the knife. She's nothing but a self-insert OC and last second love interest. Seasons 1 and 2 were love letters to the games, 3 and 4 were half-baked fanfics written by two people who forgot to compare notes.
@@prinzadam1302 Yep. Iga also threw out several of Ellis' earlier drafts because of how far off the rails he was trying to go from the original story, as clearly seen in seasons 3 and 4. Ellis also trash talked him in later interviews. Like how big of a pretentious douche do you have to be to trash talk the creator of a franchise that you're writing a show about? 🤣
They butchered the Hector tragic stories, give it to Isaac for the sake of a shitty diversity attempt. It was good, but I feel like watching a story of America in 1700s, not England 1400s
Nice fact about Grant, he was cursed by no one other than Dracula himself, meaning that Grant alone take all his way to the throne room and survived against death without his spiderman powers
No she wasn't. Kevin Kolde and Sam Deats both confirmed it on Twitter when asked several times about it that she had no relevance to Grants character at all... The only reference they confirm is the season 3 comment about the guy that put wheels on his boat.
@@wildrose8053 not really, she is Greta from the city of Danesti, a quite historical city of old time romania; the reference with Danesti and danasty is purely coincidental as the producers never meant to put Grant in the Netflix series
I think Grant would have been an interesting character. I could see him being somewhat overwhelmed by all the weirdness around him, but cracking jokes and giving the other 3 nicknames. Yeah, he'd be a very light-hearted character, but not a complete joke or those annoying characters who only exist to be funny, and perfectly capable of holding his own and adding some insight on humanity, good and bad. I like the idea of Grant being a former criminal who owes Trevor and Sypha a blood oath for saving his life and becomes a more heroic (if still somewhat thieving) character. Just imagine the combination attacks they could do; someone as fast and agile as Grant can easily distract foes for the others, even getting in quick slashes, or riding on Sypha's ice shards as he slices foes around him. I'm still disappointed he only got an offhand mention at the start of Season 3.
This is another thought I had, for what they could have done with Grant. Since Grant is sometimes described as a former pirate, he could have a backstory of traveling a lot and coming from a foreign land. So what if “Grant” was his current alias, and he came originally from Japan, the same place as the Chō, one of Dracula’s vampire generals. In a flashback revealing his backstory, Grant could be the one to witness Chō toying with the Samurai warrior and killing him. Because this hypothetical repurposed flashback could be shown in Seasons 1 or 2, it could add some buildup to Chō being slain during the “Bloody Tears” scene. It would especially be a nice payoff, if Grant was the one to finish off Chō.
@@markcobuzzi826 I kinda agree. Maybe not completely with Grant being of Cho's court (though I'm not against it in any regard), but I like the added expansion. And he could easily be juxtaposed to Sumi and Taka; both being slaves to Cho and escaping, but he goes down a different path than Sumi and Taka. God, now I wish they didn't just adapt Castlevania 3 for the first two seasons (12 episodes across 2 seasons, mind you) and focused more on the group traveling to find Dracula, forming that bond before telling their own original story.
I really liked the Netflix series, but as I said in a Reddit thread yesterday, when you really think about it the series is just some extremely elaborate and high budget fanfiction of Castlevania 3 with a bit of Curse of Darkness and a touch of the other games like COTM or SOTN. It's not bad by any means, and I really liked what they did with characters like Trevor and Isaac, but in many things it's Castlevania in name only, and there are some things which do admittedly don't really work that well. Case and point, Alucard spent the entirety of season 3 sad, training some assholes who ended up injuring him and possibly raped him, and that character development was for nothing because out of nowhere Alucard just ended up going back to being the guy he's always been in the final season. The fact that Warren Ellis just refused to include Grant is honestly kind of insulting considering that most of his excuses are either really dumb or easily disproven, and the real kicker is that Grant has always been in desperate need of some character development given that all that we have gotten is some shitty love triangle plot from a bad Wii game everyone in the fandom hates.
I think you did an absolutely perfect summarization of why Grant Danasty should have been included, and how annoying it is that so many original characters were included and not Grant. I think what just genuinely frustrates me is that all these characters to some extent just ended up feeling useless and unnecessary to the storyline, while a character that could have been useful in the storyline was excluded. Personally, I would have much preferred Grant Danasty showing up in Season 4 over Greta of Danesti and teaming up with Alucard. To me while Sam Deats and others on Twitter confirmed Greta of Danesti wasn't supposed to be Grant, I wouldn't be surprised if she was in Warren Ellis' ridiculous mind.
I just think Castlevania Netflix is where you play Curse of darkness but you don't get Grant danasty instead just trevor, alucard and sypha, and you failed to get actual true ending😂
This video is amazing and is right on point. Grant sounds like he could have been to Trevor's team what Sokka was to team avatar. It's really sad that in the end we never got Grant... But who knows; some day we might get a better adaptation or some new piece of media that does more with him. Ya never know.
It's funny you compare him to Sokka because that's exactly how I picture him: A comic relief who talks big game who turns out to be a genius engineer and one of the more insightful character. Only more of an asshole at the start.
He was referred to as “one of the Three Heroes” in judgment and in Symphony of the Night a replica of him fought Alucard along with replicas of both Sypha and Trevor so…Why the hell wasn’t he in the series?
I'm pretty sure Warren wrote two mentions of him out of spite for fans. For casual watchers, an info about a dude, crazy enough to have a whole ass ship on land, sounds like that it is a must be something important later on.
@@jonathanmorris7445 he was never established as a pirate in games. The only exception is a manual for part 3, and even then, in japanese version he's referred as "noble thief".
@@hiddenthunder1395 Not to mention, I think people should heed this one piece of advice from Rudy of Blue, in his extended review of the Resident Evil 2 Remake. If a piece of content from the source material does not make sense in context, then the clearest and often best solution is to re-contextualize it, not cut it. Under those circumstances, completely cutting a noteworthy piece of content out of an adaptation should generally be the last resort. Likewise, even if Grant was established from by all official material as a pirate, who somehow operates in a landlocked Romania, it would not stop an adaptation from changing him into a “noble thief”, a “former pirate” who traveled the world, etc.
@@hiddenthunder1395 He was actually established specifically as an ex pirate captain in the game. The manual isn't an exception, it's the original source material, but most people either don't seem to grasp the full context of how it's written (understandably), or just haven't read the whole story.... If you read further into the established lore for the full context: He was a pirate BEFORE Dracula started taking over the land. Once Grant returned to Wallachia (from the waters), and saw what was going on, he joined with the rebels attempting to fight back against Dracula, which is where the "ex" in ex pirate, and also where the "noble thief" description comes from. Once they were all defeated by Dracula's forces, he was turned into his monster form and put in the clock tower to guard it. Following those events is where Trevor and the rest come into the story. So it's not that he wasn't established as such, it's that the full story isn't told just from the manuals description, which is a common thing in the early Castlevania games. Not trying to start an argument, just clarifying.
It's funny, because I had ALMOST actually gone into the fact that it was so refreshing to hear some enthusiasm for Grant when even the Netflix adaptation decided to leave him out when you mentioned him earlier. I even had the same exact thought about the rando Isaac turned into a monster in the desert, eventually leading up to nothing and never being mentioned again. Ah, but I was a naïve Castlevania fan who was mostly just interested in the fact that there even WAS such an adaptation, no matter the Faustian bargains made along the way... Of course, part of it was not wanting to inundate you with my own input when I knew you were already well underway on your own creative endeavor that I wanted to see unfurl as its own independent production... and another part was the combination of not wanting to jinx Grant for yet another season of possible usage (once the Curse of Darkness well had all but dried up?!) and a likewise fear that perhaps anything I might say would age poorly within scant days... --- The one point I'd like to bring up is that Grant is never actually characterized anywhere as a "pirate"... or even a criminal for that matter... ... ...mostly because that would require Konami actually pay him any mind to begin with. Even though his appearance does indeed scream "pirate!" to many a first glance in Dracula's Curse for many casual observers, it's no less apt than calling him a "mummy" because of how he was visualized for Castlevania Judgment. Castlevania III merely bothers to refer to him as an "Acrobat" in its credits, for all THAT's really worth. However, while the localization of his name might be questionable at best... I feel it merits mention that of the two most prominent lineages to frequently compete for power, the Drăculești needs no introduction (despite most people knowing the name for a much less historical and far more literary and largely irrelevant reason) ...but their literal blood feud cousins were in fact the Dănești. An actual, literal blood feud! Vlad the FIRST of Wallachia was even a Dănești, despite the slightly greater prominence of Vlad II ("the Devil") Dracul's own named dynasty, and especially his son, Tepes a.k.a. The Impaler. --- Regardless! I will not protest in the slightest any attempts to bring Grant more into focus... because, well, he's important! More important than Castlevania even has time to get into... in any form! He might not be related to Dracula (even if he probably WAS some cousin, however many times removed!) or the Belmonts, but given that humans kept living after Dracula stopped laying waste to them, Grant would've definitely had to have a hand in it. It sure wasn't Alucard or those foreign interloper "vampire killers," or else the timeline wouldn't be nearly so fuzzy. Thanks for doing your part to Grant up the airwaves just a little bit at a time! --- The only other "minor" note I'd make is that... while I'm not especially unused to such, given that I chose a veritable vowel-salad username long ago... but "YuuGiJoou" actually has two o's in it. Shame that in-video credits are kinda set in stone upon encode and upload... but I would've settled for a footnote and/or link in the description. (Therefore, I greatly appreciate the effort regardless!) (...wait... I never did finish reuploading my stream archive for the playthrough of Curse of Darkness from so long ago, did I? D'oh!)
Actually, he is characterized specifically as an ex pirate captain... And though i haven't seen it confirmed anywhere, the creature Trevor fights in the castle dining room in season 4 looks 100% copy pasted from his character model from Judgement.
To which I see your "actually"... and would sorely like to know *where*... because the only thing perpetuating the idea that he's a "pirate"... is literally everyone else saying it as though it was so, never any original statement of such. It's just a hearsay feedback loop with no beginning or end.
@@YuuGiJoou Or maybe it's the fact that it says so in the games original instruction manual, which is itself an original statement of such and not hearsay.... www. vgmuseum.com/mrp/manual-cv3.htm Page 9
Well, it's something. Thanks for that. It's also riddled with numerous inaccuracies and localization changes that conflict with the actual game's own meager story content, but that was indeed the nature of getting games released internationally. Therefore, I accept this as a primary source of Grant's character assassination. Poor fella never stood a chance... ;P
@@dantevitale5714 What I mean is that while he did do bad things, he had enough sense to realize just how bad things got and attempted to help the heroes.
*SPOILER* I think it was so stupid they made Saint Germain a villain in Season 4. I think it would have been far more interesting having his storyline be him reuniting with his loved one (either Rosaly, Julia, or Aeon as his adopted or bastard daughter/son) meeting the Alchemist, and them becoming time travelers. Also I think it was absolutely dumb that they hyped up his loved one back in season 3, silhouette and all, only for it to turn out to be SURPRISE! another original character!
@@melaniejansen5748 I wouldn't say he was a villain. At most, an antagonist. But I do agree that I wish more was done with Saint Germain. I'm also not all that familiar with the Castlevania series, so I see little different between Netflix-only characters and characters from the games.
I had a story for grant in the series trevor Sypha and alucard stumble upon an an old clockwork area with many corpses human and night creature the hear noises and and growls the creature inside is fast and dexterous as it can cling to any surface it used knives and axes as weapons plus was very cunning of it was overwhelmed to strike from a better position After a hard battle syphas magic freed grant from the monster form and when he saw her he fell for her at first sight saying an Angel saved him He was kinda dismissive of trevor and alucard saying something like yeah yeah thanks for helping
Ngl I'm not actually that big of a Castlevania fan, mostly learning some sparse non-Netflix information from outside sources like Smash Bros, news on the Internet, and friends who play Castlevania, but even I knew who Grant was and was thinking some sort of agile bandit or thief would've been cool to see as a part of the main cast. Alas, that's not what happened. I still thoroughly enjoyed the show, but still...kinda sucks that the OCs had more meaningful screentime than Hector, a protagonist of one of the games, who...never even got a fight scene, and I know he can fight, the guy's main armament is a hammer. Characters and powers are so different in the show than in the video games that most fans actually consider them separate from the canon characters and setting, which isn't bad per see, just...different. I'm wary but optimistic on how they're going to portray Richter in the upcoming spinoff series. Kinda weird that they skipped over Simon Belmont, the very first Belmont released by Konami in the first Castlevania, but I like Richter. From what I've seen from video games and such is that Richter is a boastful, dramatic, hammy, yet noble guy who's proud of his lineage and wants to help people and fight evil...and that sounds like a great contrast to Trevor, especially since I think Richter is the first Belmont since Trevor that Alucard would interact with. He's even greatly adept with holy magic, something Trevor explicitly says he's horrible at. I hope they do him justice.
@TruSandwich i have to agree there. Like i know they have to start somewhere, but it also wouldve been cool to get Leon's story too. Like you see how it all begins, and then. We go to Trevor. Where things have changed greatly. And even if Simon and Juste's games arent much in terms of what happens gameplay wise, there's still a story to be told with the characters. (Cant think of the third belmont between trevor and richter, Christopher maybe?) I understand that Richter's full story, if theyre doing both Rondo and Symphony, is really interesting. But skipping so many belmonts I can't excuse. Actually my theory is that they skipped so much so they could still have Alucard.
@TruSandwich Exactly, I really hope its not that Alucard centric. Because I WOULD be very interested if it focused more on Richter, even in the Sotn phase of things. But sadly i have a feeling it will be, especially with Maria
@TruSandwich at my top priority though is Leon and Juste. Mostly because Leon is. Well hes the first Belmont kinda. That and I really need to more stuff on his friend. Trefor Lewellyn I believe? He doesnt even have a wiki page. And then Juste's story is the one before Richter and I like the stuff with Maxim. That and it was my first castlevania game, so theres bias. Not sure what you mean with agenda in s3 and 4, but i will say i did not like what they did with Alucard in s3. Like really? Better ways to show betrayal anyways. Also as the video says, there was no Grant. Shame really. I was really holding out on a sliver of hope at the end of s3, that the weird portal monster would actually be Grant even if it doesnt match up. Like. They have to go and kill it, and then the ending of that episode happens, but then they go back one last time and find this *guy*.
The monster being Grant would have been pretty cool actually, sense his whole thing is that he's been cursed by Dracula. It would have been one hell of an introduction.
@TruSandwich Yeah, thats definitely fair about the anti-god. I did like the story with the bishop, but surely we couldve see how God is good in this series too? Because it seems here hes more direct, or its just because its the 1400s. But I dont mind Alucard being interested in guys, much less anyone. Especially with Sotn, where i believe he ends up with Maria? Thats secondhand knowledge though so. Youre also right about Striga and Morana. I did like them, but they just didnt add anything important, unlike Carmilla and Lenore. Wouldve made a little more sense too if Lenore and Carmilla were more of a diarchy? That might not be the word im thinkingod, but clearky theres meant to be a balance between the two. Yeah, Simon's never been properly animated has he? Closest thing I can think of is He-man from masters of the universe. Like. Not exactly the same obviously ,but decently close. I just really like Juste. And if i remember right, he doesnt even know the Castles dracula's until he encounters Death bout halfway through. Before that its kinda "uh oh, my friend's now a bit fucked up while im searching for my other friend." And Christopher and Soliel. (Solieu?) Honest ythey could do a lot with that, and maybe just start Christopher's series with him defeating Drac sinxe i dont think his game has a... story per say, until Soliel.
I thought they made a small mention of grant in the series. Season 3 wasn’t it? Saint Germain and some other characters made mention of a crazy guy who turned his wagon into a ship? I believe it’s mentioned in the first episode of the 3rd season.
It was an incorrect spelling of Danesti which was the name of a rival family of Vlad the Impaler in real life. If I remember right the two families were Danesti and Draculnesti
Well, historically, it's Drăculeşti ((which is actually a branch of the House of Basarab)), its members are the descendants of Vlad Dracul (the father of Vlad Țepeș) and were considered the bastard line while the Dăneşti were considered the legitimate descendants
I think, if they're going to adapt Simon's story, they'll include Grant since we already established that people from Danesty is a thing and Simon's been Trevor and Sypha's kid in other lore... so... he might end up being a bandit who's from said village and becomes Simon's buddy during their barbarian boat ride arc, I'm guessing...? 🤷♂️
@@ryonintaka7439 The lore of the games doesn't matter one bit to the show's timeline besides the base setting and occasional references, they can change around whatever they please.
@@L337playing Well they did say they were going to stick as close to the lore as possible. Even so, I guarantee you they won't have Grant in Simon's story, lol.
@@ryonintaka7439 If they really did say that, either they changed plans or they really suck at it, cause they changed A LOT. I'm pretty sure Trevor and Sypha weren't even born yet when Lisa died, and that is just one of the MAJOR changes they made. Nobody would bat an eye if they made Simon Trevor's son, it's already pretty damn clear that the shows canon is separate from the games' canon.
They did my boys Hector and Gret dirty in the show. Plus i didn't really like the show. To be honest this show was just a misrepresentation of the characters and their storylines and designs. I'm glad that Netflix is going to stop doing the show because The Writer/showrunner sucks and also I heard there's allegations about him so that's why Netflix stopped. I Heard there's like a spin-off or a show set in the same universe with a different showrunner so maybe a good show. Also great well informed video, keep up the great work.
Same here. Once I learned of the behind the scenes drama and why the show was written this way, my hatred for this show flowed without end. The writer is a piece of work, but the showrunner is also a fake fan. I have sympathy for neither. Hector was the worst. The other male characters weren't much better. I have a gut feeling the new show's going to be awful. The problem is Netflix themselves.
If I were to classify the quartet of heroes into classes for DnD 5e: Alucard (Bard, College of Swords) Grant (Rogue, Thief) Trevor (Paladin, Oath of Vengeance) Sypha (Sorcerer, Storm)
Hector's and Isaac's powers are very different in the animated series. With Hector in the games he can basically control spells and manipulate spellcrafting like a forgemaster would a blade, hence the name Devil Forgemaster. In the animated series, the Devil Forgemaster is someone who creates creatures of the Night, individuals that can apparently be born from the union of vampires naturally, but the Devil Forgemaster bypasses the process of procreation to literally create Night Monsters but they're bound to his will as well as the will of the person the forgemaster pledges himself too. So I think if we're changing the powers this drastically, we can do with an interesting personality change.
Ever since Curse of Darkness, something I've always thought would be cool is if Hector were secretly an angel/human hybrid called a Nephil, especially so as the son of an angel of death. That can explain where all his awesome powers comes from. Regardless, what the cartoon did with him was an insult to his game self.
@@UmisTsukishiro00 Um... I disagree, it's not an insult to be drastically different due to the ways in which powers and abilities are changed. I simply just view Castlevania as a cartoon different from Castlevania as a series. Being drastically different is not the same as insulting the original character.
@@voiceofreason467 The Curse of Darkness adapted storyline happened to really disappoint me. I could accept changes to Hector's demeanour, but it feels empty if he doesn't become a champion of humanity or befriend Belmont and co. His personal story barely contributes to the grand scheme.

adaptation? nice joke, if it were really why they keep breaking character and kept using relevant joke/words in our timeline and not their own timeline lol
You're right about breaking character. I don't think the writers knew what to do with any characters, besides maybe Trevor and Sypha, once Dracula was defeated. If season 3 was beating a dead horse, season 4 was lighting the horse on fire.
@@UmisTsukishiro00 EXACTLY. Killing Dracula halfway through the show essentially killed the plot. Don't get me wrong, I LIKE the show, I just think there's too much missed potential to not be a little miffed about. I mean the entire storyline of Isaac amounts to nothing, he never even meets the heroes. Same with Carmilla and her useless sisters. Having 2 plots that don't intersect or relate to one another AT ALL is bad writing. Imagine if in Breaking Bad, the show took breaks from Walter and the main plot to show you the story of some guy named Greg dealing coke on the streets. Then both stories just sort of happen at the same time, the two never meet, and the show just has 2 stories running parallel to each other. That would be fucking retarded. And yet that's exactly what Ellis did.
I guess they left out Grant from the show, because they felt it would have been harder to develop the other three main protagonists trevor, cypher and alucard. Making it a trio of main heroes instead of a foursome, it lets more focus being on them. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for the greater story, like how they removed tom bombadil from lord of the rings movies.
It was actually just the fact that Warren Ellis didn't like the character. He said it in one of his interviews back in season 2. Pretty lame reason....
@@MrOrcshaman Oh I agree. But yea, Warren Ellis is just an arrogant pos in general. Grant was greta of danesti and the bug night creature. He was never really significant enough in the games to warrant an appearance. I think the real crime here....where the peeping eyes bro
He's significant enough since he was helping the war against Dracula and is significant post-Dracula since he planned and helped rebuild Wallachia. He's got a great motivation and that makes him significant enough.
Thank you very much. The history of Grant's neglect is so long, it's actually becomes depressing and hilarious at the same time. Also, it's straight up laughable, that the guy, who wrote vampire viking who loves pig's blood because it gives him diarrhea, would call Grant's character stupid and out of place.
Yeah... I hear ya, dude. And I sympathize. Its such a shame Grant was never in the show. Without a doubt, that was clearly a missed opportunity. But oh well. We just have to work with what we have in some cases.
This is not entirely related to the video but what I found interesting is that Alucard is like the Jotaro of Castlevania or vice versa. They both appear in almost every sequel after their appearance and they’re always depicted as sort of mentor or guid the the main character of the sequels. idk this is probably just me.
for what it's worth...glad they didn't put him in.....he would have been comic relief character, probably voiced by kevin Hart. It would have been a mockery
I diagree with Netflixvania been a good adaptation and I think it is mediocre show by itself. The worst thing about is that all the questionable and radical changes, the flat and boring OCs and all the built up, it amount to nothing in season 4. Take out all that has to do with Hector, Issac, Carmilla and sisters and hell the entire season 3 and I'm pretty sure we would have a better show. But no Warren Ellis wanted another post-modern "masterpiece" to elevated his ego. He just spitted on the fans.

Also Greta had nothing to do with Grant. Closest we get was that crazy girl from Targowiszte, who dual wielded knives.
@@mrakimov1611 Hardly, even though he had little to no agenda or personality in games only thing similliar is that Greta's name starts with G, and she is from Danesti village, so she would be called Greta of Danesti in some instances - which is still only a presumption. Goals - Grant Goal was to take revenge for his family on Dracula. Role? Not only did Greta not worked with whole team, so it's hard to compare roles between her and in game Grant, but also she serves as Alucard's love interest which Grant never did to my knowledge. Not to mention Grant being explictly referenced in season 3, therefore already establishing his position in series world. As much as I would love to see whole team on screen sadly Greta is not it, and any resemblence to beloved character is purely incidental. Which is damn shame, but hey, it can still be your headcanon that she is. I personally see that shorthaired girl with knives from Targowishce as Grant equivalent due to displayed hgh level and agility along with weapon of choice being the same.
There's already too many protagonists in the show (and the schedule for it's ending was clearly tight so the last season kinda rushed everyone's plot to the end while it could've easily been another season) and there's truly no reason for more, like, sure he could've been there but there's not much reason to do that, it would just make the plot unnecessarily more heavy
Given how Warren Ellis and Netflix butchered everything else, perhaps leaving Grant out was an act of mercy. If only they could have done the same for Hector, Isaac, the shoehorned woke garbage and trying to turn this show into the poor man's Game Of Thrones.
@@StriderKyanzaki wait, you can? I remember Grant => Sypha => get to castle and Grant => Alucard => get to castle. I don’t remember a route where you meet all three.
I think I'll make a video explaining how greta could be the gender bent version of grant. Makes sense cause the name greta is the female counterpart of grant. Along with her having no last name, but she claimed she was from danasty. Sound familiar?
@@martinreveco3179 Kevin Kolde, one of the executive producers of the show, confirmed on Twitter when asked about it several times that she has no relevance to Grants character at all. The only confirmed reference to Grant in the show was the "Pirate of the Road" comment in season 3.
This video was great. Solid points. I just wish you had waited a little longer since we finally for the Netflix adaptation of Grant in season 4 (Greta). Oh well, just means you get to make a follow up! Anyways, as I said, great work!
She's not a reference to Grant though. The producers confirmed it on Twitter and also said the only reference to him was the Pirate of the Roads comment in season 3.
@@ryonintaka7439 ah yes, Greta of Danesti, not at all a reference to Grant Danasty. I read that interview as well. When the terrible show staff fail us, God steps in.
I still wonder if Dracula can transform into a demon monster in this series. But yeah, Warren did indeed make some of the characters better while he absolutely butchered the rest of them. Looking at you, Hector. 👀
Seems to me, making Trevor Belmont a crude drunk slowly making his way back up to becoming a roguish hero overwrites whatever role Grant Danasty would have played in the story and team dynamic. If Grant were added in, you'd have to split up Trevor's rogue hero shtick between him and Grant, leaving Grant to be the hard-to-like rogue and Trevor to play a more straightforward hero; he can't be too world-weary otherwise he'd cut into Alucard's brooding time. He also can't be too noble, as that might take away from Sypha's initial naivete. It would dilute the character interactions and also what they contribute to the story. Not saying it's impossible to pull off, just that reducing the main party to three tightens the focus.
@@markcobuzzi826 you seriously should become a writer friend that was golden
Wasn't that only in CV Judgment? That storyline isn’t really canon to the original Grant.
You could do SO MUCH with a rogue named after one of the royal families of Wallachia. Picture it, "last heir of royal family fakes death, becomes criminal, forms a resistance and fights Count Dracula, only for his resistance to get slaughtered and himself turned into a demon"
Both Konami and Ellis seem to have this absolute hatred of Grant, for some reason.
@@UmisTsukishiro00 oh I didn't even think of that. Talk about lost opportunities!
Compared to Alucard, Sypha and Trevor, Grant has to regain his courage and confidence once more seeing as (maybe aside from Alucard) he's the only one who actually fought Dracula and lived."
We just wrote a more compelling story for Grant that an overrated writer couldn't be bothered to do.
@@UmisTsukishiro00 Thank you for reminding me of this bit of info. Here's the perfect material should a more faithful adaptation give a damn about adding Grant into the story.
It pissses me off, he's not in because Warren doesn't like this name which is just ridiculous
Then they talk about a guy called the pirate of the lands, there's multiple characters who can be Grant
Then they make a town of Danesti, I get it it's a reference to the Danesti Family of Wallachia but serious Grant lead a group to fight Dracula but their all slaughtered and he's turned into a monster
He's one of the heroes to kill Dracula but just because that nimrod doesn't like his name he's not shown just mention and teased
The show is a amazing but I personally like Grant, wanted to see more of him and the Danesti Family if there's still any survivors
💯 Spot on. Just re-watched the first 2 seasons. Its ridiculous how much of a difference there is.

Her name is Greta of dynasty
Yup
@@wildrose8053 not really, she is Greta from the city of Danesti, a quite historical city of old time romania; the reference with Danesti and danasty is purely coincidental as the producers never meant to put Grant in the Netflix series
The music at the end was totally worth it.
He always struck me as a character like Polnareff from Part 3 of Jojo, so this could work
I really liked the Netflix series, but as I said in a Reddit thread yesterday, when you really think about it the series is just some extremely elaborate and high budget fanfiction of Castlevania 3 with a bit of Curse of Darkness and a touch of the other games like COTM or SOTN.
Oof. Accurate.
This is so underated.
This deserves more views
He was referred to as “one of the Three Heroes” in judgment and in Symphony of the Night a replica of him fought Alucard along with replicas of both Sypha and Trevor so…Why the hell wasn’t he in the series?
They reference him in season 3 as the "Pirate of the Roads" implying that he does exist, but isn't a big part of the story
I'm pretty sure Warren wrote two mentions of him out of spite for fans. For casual watchers, an info about a dude, crazy enough to have a whole ass ship on land, sounds like that it is a must be something important later on.
It is kind of odd too since Grand is a pirate... in a land locked country like Walachia
@@jonathanmorris7445 he was never established as a pirate in games. The only exception is a manual for part 3, and even then, in japanese version he's referred as "noble thief".
@@hiddenthunder1395
Not to mention, I think people should heed this one piece of advice from Rudy of Blue, in his extended review of the Resident Evil 2 Remake.
Ironic that he said trying to put Grant in the series would ruin the story when he did a great job of doing that himself in season 4.
---
The one point I'd like to bring up is that Grant is never actually characterized anywhere as a "pirate"... or even a criminal for that matter... ... ...mostly because that would require Konami actually pay him any mind to begin with.
---
Regardless!
---
The only other "minor" note I'd make is that... while I'm not especially unused to such, given that I chose a veritable vowel-salad username long ago... but "YuuGiJoou" actually has two o's in it. Shame that in-video credits are kinda set in stone upon encode and upload... but I would've settled for a footnote and/or link in the description. (Therefore, I greatly appreciate the effort regardless!)
(...wait... I never did finish reuploading my stream archive for the playthrough of Curse of Darkness from so long ago, did I? D'oh!)
I appreciate the kindness and critique, as well as your support. Grant needs more love.
Thanks again for letting me borrow footage.

Well, it's something. Thanks for that. It's also riddled with numerous inaccuracies and localization changes that conflict with the actual game's own meager story content, but that was indeed the nature of getting games released internationally.
Therefore, I accept this as a primary source of Grant's character assassination. Poor fella never stood a chance... ;P
I really like grant from the fighting game when I was a kid, and was upset we didn't get him in the show

If i was the head of Castlevania Show i would hire you on the spot
This video is so well cut. And brings up a great point. Long live grant.
They tried having him in the show, but he kept climbing the walls out of the shot
Just another reason this show should have ended after season 2. Reduced to nothing but a garbage fire with my favorite game franchises name on it.
(Cant think of the third belmont between trevor and richter, Christopher maybe?)
I understand that Richter's full story, if theyre doing both Rondo and Symphony, is really interesting.
Before that its kinda "uh oh, my friend's now a bit fucked up while im searching for my other friend."
And Christopher and Soliel. (Solieu?) Honest ythey could do a lot with that, and maybe just start Christopher's series with him defeating Drac sinxe i dont think his game has a... story per say, until Soliel.
he was only mention but never shown in Castlevania Netflix
Isaac: What is your name, captain?
Grant DaNasty: Name? haha [REDACTED] God knows, forgot it long ago.
I was hoping he would appear in the reboot but since the reboot is featuring Richter and Maria, I guess it’s not going to happen
Highly doubt it. Simon is 5 generations after Trevor in the canon, so having Grant there would make no sense.
It would be better if it's someone whose related to Grant

Trevor (Paladin, Oath of Vengeance)
Sypha (Sorcerer, Storm)
I stop watching on season 2 or 1 and just seems strange with out certain charactors, grant can turn into giant and walk on walls
Grant can make a comeback remember Dracula and maria is still alive but they should do a branchoff to sotn before sotn happens
@@UmisTsukishiro00 His personal story for all intents and purposes leads to the direct resurrection of Dracula, almost ending the world and ends up putting a shit ton of pressure on Syfa, Alucard and Trevor. Not sure why you think his personal story doesn't contribute to the grand scheme.
adaptation? nice joke, if it were really why they keep breaking character and kept using relevant joke/words in our timeline and not their own timeline lol
I heard Hammer is related to Grant from what i heard.
@@ryonintaka7439 oh.. Well okay then. Its not like castlevania 3 had any real deep characterization so I don't get what he hated about him.
@@MrOrcshaman Oh I agree. But yea, Warren Ellis is just an arrogant pos in general. Part of it was likely that he was butthurt because his scripts were thrown out by the franchise creator for being so bad and off topic from the main story.
He actually never played the games, and also refused to when asked to do so by the franchise creator, and then trash talked him in later videos. What kind of person trash talks the creator of a franchise they're writing a show about?? Lol.
I'll see if I can find those videos. They're a master class on how to be a douchebag 🤣
@@ryonintaka7439 wait, the creator of Castlevania (the games) didn't like his scripts? Can I get the source?
@@TheDeadmanstrolling He rejected several drafts earlier in the writing process. Ellis said it in one of his interviews talking about it. Just look up interviews with him and you'll find it eventually.
poor Grant, i could understand the logic of why he sadly got left behind
but i would never say that is right or just that he wasn't included in this beautiful majestic Castlevania adaptation
much love Grant Danasty you will always be as iconic and memorable to me as the mighty Trevor Belmont and Sypha
Grant was greta of danesti and the bug night creature. He was never really significant enough in the games to warrant an appearance. I think the real crime here....where the peeping eyes bro
Do you mean significant storywise or gameplay wise?
He was not Greta. The producers confirmed it on Twitter....and wtf are you smoking to say that the fly creature could have been him? 🤣
Probably helps that apparently Iga is a Jojo fan judging by the numerous references from his vania games
for what it's worth...glad they didn't put him in.....he would have been comic relief character, probably voiced by kevin Hart. It would have been a mockery
3:40 the hector scene was funny asf. But honestly I also agree with dracula but the characters arent me they are real people.
I felt like the priest who got his eye whipped out by Trevor was a reference to Grant in the series.
How is that a reference? I haven't played the games so I don't know.
There is no reason to think that at all, lol. The only reference they confirmed was the comment in season 3 about the guy that put wheels on his boat.
4:42 There s(he) is
They actually aren’t the same person despite their names being similar
Bloody Tears on kazoo 💀💀💀💀
Grant got done dirty. He will always be my #1
The show is siding with Dracula because the show written by awful people.
Agreed, their depiction of the Church is disgusting.
@@LordMegatron818
Even the cartoonishly evil depiction of the Church was less evil than Dracula. Was I supposed to feel sad about a guy who only figured out his wife didn't want genocide after his 2nd filicide attempt? I would respect him more if he admit that it was purely HIS revenge.
This bothers me to no end.
Netflixvania just felt so...incomplete.
Grant was literally THE FIRST CHARACTER you chose to recruit in the game. WTF
* Alucard + Greta of Danasti
= Grant Danasti (?!)
** Imagine, if Trevor and Sypha had twins, a trained monster hunter male and a magically inclined female.
Together with Greta and Alucard's son, Grant Celsius (or Kelvin, as middle name) Danasti (Alucard did not allow him to take the Tepeş name); are the new trio of Hunters of the Night.
If Castlevania ever gets a new season, then I really want this to be the case. But the current showrunner just doesn't like Grant as a character, so it won't happen if hes at the helm
Loved this video!
Maybe Grant will appear in the Next Castlevania Series about Richter Belmont, I Know Grant does not Belong in that Era but the Netflix Castlevania Universe is separate from the Game Universes.
Maybe a reference that he was one of Isaac's crew or something till he was changed. That would've give a bit of honor though the story board creator would doubt it.😮💨🤞
That ending tho 💀
Finallllllllllllyyyy someone mentions grant -_-
Such a disappointment to the Vet. Castlevania fans
So no portrait of ruin call out for grant 0.0 the shame
Facts. Wtf is going on with grant?
What if in a sequel series Grant is a decendent of Greta Denasti. There's no way to directly adapt any of the games anymore so I mean, it would totally make sense.
The original adaptation was supposed to be a movie, not a show so thats theactual reason why grant wasnt adapted
Iga is the one who side lined him
I believe Greta (Alucard's love interest) to be Grant DaNasty seeing as shes the chief of Danesti village.
It’s not her, it’s confirmed many times that they are not the same person nor is she based off of him
This did not age well.
Actually, we do kinda get him in season 4.
@@mrakimov1611 No we don't. In season 3 writer just rubs his balls against fans faces with further mocking Grant and teasing him. In Season 4 there is village called Danestia and character named Greta, but showrunners already said this was unintentional (they based name of the village of real life village in Romania). Also Greta had nothing to do with Grant. Closest we get was that crazy girl from Targowiszte, who dual wielded knives.
@@AdamMichalMarkowski Greta and Grant do have similar personality, goals and role.
@@AdamMichalMarkowski cmon dude. Grant Danasty, Greta of Danesti. They definitely knew what they were doing.
It was based on castlevania 3 so I'd you take the path to get alucard you don't get grant if I recall. It's been a while since I've played
you could, you could do it where you meet all three of them (Grant, Sypha, and Alucard)
Good stuff
2:26 maybe...maybe if they didnt shoehorn the woke shit in,they could have put Grant somewhere instead?
This is what helped bring this show down for me.

The only good changed character is Isaac. Trevor and the rest are garbage
Yeah hector trying to resurect dracula is the most asining thing ever
I dislike many plots of Netflix castlevania but imagine if it was produced by HBO 😁
Or have grant be the sokka of the group, normal dude, comic relief with tactical intelligence who represents the normal side of humanity
@@joezuru3753 That would've been a nice take, too.
