In e4m1 you get 12 Rockets to deal with...5 or 6 Barons of hell and hitscanners shooting through the wall while you can't. And no medikits. ffs... Even TNT gives you chainsaws to Pick these hitscanners around the corners...but here...fuck this map

I’ve only beaten E1M3 on Nightmare! twice, both of which being on the BFG Edition without turbo pinkies, etc. To this day I’ve never been able to beat it on true Nightmare.

I wonder why Spiderdemon has once again classed as F tier. I think this might be ironically because of her high health - she has too much health to really be used in a normal level, so she is only good as a boss monster.
But as a boss monster, she is really boring - because her attack is hitscan and she is huge and slow, entire fight consists of standing behind cover, and only peeking out to shoot at her - something that you can't do with Cyberdemon without risking lethal splash damage.
Arachnotron is genuinely a fixed and useful version of Spiderdemon - smaller for more mobility, less health means you can put several of those in a level without making played dump their entire ammo, and automatic chaingun replaced with automatic plasmagun means dodging their attacks is more exciting.
I think another aspect that not a lot of people talk about is the Spiderdemon's sheer size. She is by far the widest enemy in the game, and while the Cybie is taller, that doesn't really mean anything in vanilla Doom game mechanics, so she's just easier to hit than him. This also means that the places she can be placed are very limited, even more than the Cyberdemon. The Cybie pops up 5? times throughout all of Ultimate Doom, while the Spidey only pops up twice, both as final boss appearances. To add insult to injury, she also (for some reason) has quite a bit less health than he does, 2500 vs. 4000. *In addition*, she's also much easier to stunlock in my experience, and more prone to infighting likely because of the hitscan armament. All this, combined with free BFG, contributes to a vastly underwhelming final boss for both the original Doom and Ultimate Doom.

Strange how the mid boss is on the highest tier while the final boss is in the lowest one, but yeah, the Spider Mastermind is quite easy to kill in all her appearances.
It doesn't help that she has more surrounding monsters to infight with than just Lost Souls, and can't kill them as fast with her only attack. I wonder how it would go if she had whatever her magic attack was going to be, or the Arch-vile's as a substitute.

From the original my personal favorite enemy was always the Baron of Hell. They always looked so cool as a kid and the green fire ball made them even cooler.

I remember thinking that, except as the final episode boss of The Shores of Hell, the Cyberdemon is more of a puzzle boss than a real tough enemy. He's terrible if you try to face him head on, but every level where he's not the final boss of the episode, the level provides you a shortcut to beating it easily, such as an invincibility powerup and a BFG or a telefrag opportunity.
Although it seems on Nightmare, that gets screwed up on E4M6.
It's amazing how two extra bullets can turn an enemy from pathetic to lethal.

Would you ever consider doing a video detailing the differences between source ports? At the beginning of this video you spoke of things GZDoom had removed from the engine. I'm curious to know how different they actually are. I'm sure I heard John Romero saying in some commentary that he uses GZDoom and I can't remember exactly what he said, but it was something along the lines of it being very faithful to the original game, the only real difference being the hardware rendering. Or perhaps Romero is mistaken and just doesn't know enough of the details?
That's on my to-do list.

Small question (with a potential long reply): why is GZDoom considered impure? You mentioned "engine quirks", but to me that's very non-specific. I would be very keen on a video going through the different PC ports and their... ummm... impurities (and whether they are accepted for official runs). :)
Agreed, I would also like to hear more detailed explanation.
Essentially the original games are full of bugs and weird behaviour, weird collisions, things partially or fully clipping, etc. GZDoom heavily modifies how the game runs, and 'fixes' a lot of these quirks.
Oh, and it changes monster hitboxes so theyre easier to punch.
As Morinor said, ZDoom and its variants change a lot of vanilla Doom's quirks, such as collision detection (if you've ever tried to chainsaw a mancubus or spiderdemon in vanilla Doom, you know how broken it can be), random number generation, the knockback from explosions (in vanilla Doom explosions only push things horizontally even if they come from a vertical angle, like a rocket fired from below), movement bugs like wallrunning, etc. More things than I know, and certainly too many to list here.
These were changed for various reasons, but this tends to happen when a feature gets rewritten to make things more flexible for modders. Some of these changes can be enabled/disabled with compatibility flags but others cannot.
In general, ZDoom is kind of its own thing and doesn't aim for demo compatibility with vanilla, even with "Doom (strict)" compatibility settings (which is more to fix maps that break with normal ZDoom settings than it is to create identical behavior). In fact it uses a separate demo format from vanilla Doom, so a demo recorded in ZDoom cannot be played in vanilla Doom and vice versa. Demo compatibility between versions of ZDoom is also not the best, so to play back a ZDoom demo you may need the same version with which it was recorded.
For recording "official" demos you generally want to use vanilla Doom, Chocolate/Crispy Doom, or PrBoom+ (with the appropriate -complevel setting). These place much emphasis on maintaining vanilla behavior and demo compatibility. Boom changes some behavior from vanilla, such as how many lost souls pain elementals can spawn, but PrBoom's complevel option lets you choose the version of Doom whose behavior you want to emulate, so demos recorded with it will often be done with certain standard complevels such as -complevel 2 (Doom 1.9/Doom II) and -complevel 9 (Boom 2.02).
Try to shoot a rocket into group of cacos in GZDoom and in PRBoom. This is one of the most outrageous things in GZDoom when you love (like me) playing maps that are all about managing groups of monsters. There are many videos about this and similar issues with GZDoom and the like vs. any true vanilla source port.

If I'm, being perfectly honest, ZDoom seems to make everything way more versatile (I mean, what's the point of having a flying monster that can't fly over other monsters?) - BUT, that being said, I completely understand now how it warps the original experience.

Being forced to fight to progress is an interesting observation about Doom 1. It's almost like the game is well-paced! As much as people talk shit about Sandy's level design, I love his maps and am glad for his contribution.
Hi again guys! Just wanted to update you on my "all dooms nightmare run" since i dont really have anyone else to share it with and you inspired me to do it in the first place. Gotten through ultimate doom (ep 1-4), sigil, doom 2, no rest for the living, master levels for doom 2, tnt evilution, plutonia experiment, doom 3, doom 3 ressurection of evil, doom 3 lost mission on nightmare and now there's only doom '16 ultra-nightmare mode left. If anyone's curious i based my runs of classic dooms either on decino/peter runs or zero master (+few levels i made up my own routes since for example there is no nightmare run of tnt map32 etc.). The hardest level in classic dooms on nightmare in my opinion is either vivisection from no rest for the living or express elevator to hell from master levels. Doom 3 nightmare mode was a joke in comparison lol. Great video as always, hope you keep them coming!

First and foremost, your Doom coverage is second to none. I do have a couple minor critiques that I would like to share. I find that Imp's fireballs are very easy to dodge if you watch their hands. Once they go into their fire animation you have a split second to move before he let's it fly. It doesn't matter which wah you strafe as long as you do before the shot flies. Pinkies are another incredibly easy monster to deal with. First, alert them with your chainsaw. Then back into either a doorway or a corner of a room. Put your back against where the walls join and they will funnel single file into your chainsaw. Both of these tricks work on any setting even with fast demons. Chaingunners are the bane of my existence. One might be easy but two will chew you up in a second. Love this channel!

I'd swap the Caco and Baron, and personally think the Cyberdemon is D/C tier, but otherwise this list is great! Solid reasoning for everything even the placements I disagree with

E4m1 is easily the hardest official map of any doom game, even harder than map32 of Plutonia
E4M2 I personally consider harder than E4M1

I know that's wrong because E4M2 is harder than E4M1, and then Peter already mentioned TNT map 9. And map 32 isn't even the hardest Plutonia map, that map gives you a BFG and tons of cells and Megashperes. It may be full of brutal monsters, and you may die a few times by catching some unlucky rockets, but it's relatively easy since you can BFG to win.
@@mjc0961 I think E4m1 is harder for me because of the resources you get. There's pretty much no health on the map meaning if you take alot of hits early you have to restart. How tight and small the map it. The The strongest weapon you get is the rocket launcher, at least e4m2 gives you a plasma gun for barons. That's just what makes the level extremely hard for me is just how perfectly you have to play, e4m2 just have more resources thus more chances to mess up. While on e4m1 you must play perfect to win

SS Cyberdemon just because of one single level? When Demons and Shotgunners gives you hard time in rest of the game.
Imo I still consider Shotgunners as most dangerous enemies on nightmare difficulty. It's difficult to predict their respawn tick and it takes instantly around 30 hp.
But still, your DooM explanations videos are pleasure to watch.
Tier list is based on beating every level on nightmare. E4M6 is the hardest level of them all because of the extra shenanigans and detours you're forced to do to successfully beat the cyberdemon.
@@decino I feel like at that point it's an argument of preference. Whether highest impact in a single level or highest impact throughout the game is more important to you. I still find it supremely unfair that the Cybie is in the highest tier while the Spidey is in the lowest. Honestly, what was id thinking with her enemy design and encounter design?

If you want to beat every Ultimate Doom level on nightmare E4M6 will be the toughest map to beat. The entire strategy revolves around that pesky cyberdemon.
That single encounter was enough to make E4M6 the last level of Ultimate Doom to ever be beaten on Nightmare. That level is HARD.
