Cursive is one of those things that's always really weird to me when it comes to generations because not only did we learn it in school, but I myself learned it early and we actually used it through 6th grade. I still have most of it memorized and can absolutely use it if I needed to, but I usually don't. I'm 25.

I didn't learn cursive, the only bit I know is for my own signature. I am 22. At least in my area, they stopped teaching cursive for around 2-4 years then started back up again but never taught the ones who missed out on it. My nephews are learning cursive, and their Alpha.

I write in mixed cursive and print. Most letters flow faster in cursive and the ones I don't I just write print and seamlessly switch back and forth as needed.
Same! To me it takes too much effort to write cursive capital T’s and F’s the “Proper” way. Also I refuse to do a capital cursive Q. That does not look like a Q; that is a 2. … I’ll also sometimes just switch versions mid-sentence without realizing until I go back and read it later.

This takes me back. We spent third and fourth grade learning cursive and we were expected to write that way for the rest of our time in that school. Even to this day I still prefer to use cursive and it's sad how few people I know still use it

I remember my 7th grade English teacher telling us that we had to practice our cursive because we would have to write all our 8th grade English papers in cursive. The school got a grant for computers that summer, so we all had to type them instead.
There is a short video of someone explaining the mechanics of the quill pen. From there, I realized why penmanship was so important prior to the 20th century. The ink-well pen with metal nib was a game changer. The ballpoint pen made handwriting a breeze and accessible to the masses. The monitor made it obsolete. 😂
In 7th grade (2007) all of my teachers told us, “if your cursive isn’t neat, just print”. I use a hybrid that’s basically print connected like cursive 😂
They taught us cursive in 3rd grade and convinced us that we would be writing in it for the rest of our academic careers from 4th grade all the way up to college lmao

Gen Z here! My dad bought some books that helped you write cursive (like they had sentences you write over to work on your cursive four or five times) so I learned cursive as well, just not at school.
@@SpringNotes You can print out papers with lines you can write over to help with your cursive. That's what helped me as a kid. There are other ways to learn as well, like by looking it up online or from a book in the library and writing in cursive in your notebook.
I only learned my first name in 5th grade because a girl knew cursive and I found it pretty, then my parents taught me my last name so I could sign my state id

My class was the last to learn cursive. We had a freshman friend in high school that we used to pass cursive notes to just to mess with him. He came back the next year having gotten his grandmother to teach him cursive that summer. His handwriting was amazing and he ended up selling hand made holiday cards for $2 a pop until he graduated.

As an in-between-er for gen z and millennials, I was in elementary right before they stopped teaching cursive. I learned in second grade and was told that’s how I’d be writing from now on. Needless to say my handwriting is fittingly in between print and cursive
Pretty much the same here. I learned it in primary school, didn't need to use it in high school anymore, resulted in that weird hybrid. If I write things at work I have to do it in full caps cuz it's the only time that muscle memory doesn't kick in (read: only time people don't struggle reading my handwriting)
I remember when I moved to NJ in fifth grade and was writing in cursive, all the other kids were in awe (I had lived in PA and was taught cursive two years prior). When the teacher saw their reactions to my script, she created a weekly lesson plan to at least help them learn their signatures. As a Gen Z, I prefer cursive.

I have a slab of plastic, metal, and glass that allows me to speak face to face with anyone, like on "Get Smart," and ask a Chinese guy in Beijing to do the maths for me on fivver. LG stopped supporting the calculator app on my phone last year. I make due.
My kid is 13 and he was the same way. He was obsessed with reading and it drove him crazy that there were English letters that he struggled to read. So he asked me to teach him cursive. Now he _can_ write in cursive, even though he doesn’t, and he can definitely sign his name, but the important thing to him is that he can _read_ it. When he was in 3rd grade, they had cursive worksheet that were optional extra credit assignments and most of his classmates didn’t do them. He had amazing grades in English that year because it took him only a minute or two to do each worksheet so he got tons of extra credit, lol.

4th to 6th class? Do you mean between Year 4 and Year 6. Oh and in my country, we were being taught in Year 2 and 3 how to write in cursive and then in Year 4 the teacher stated that learning cursive was no longer practical for primary school students and will only be taught in high school, but when we got to high school and I asked the English teacher about writing in cursive they said they stopped having that happen in 2015, which was when I was in Year 5, two years before entering high school.
I learned cursive in 3rd grade, some 23 years ago, and I still write pretty much exclusively in cursive, unless I'm writing instructions for someone else... then I write it out in cursive to get what I want down and then transcribe it to print. Printing takes forever though, because I'm not as comfortable using it and have to take my time to make it neat.
2nd Grade back in about 1990. My handwriting has never been great...even my normal penmanship & Cursive for it to be decent has to be done slowly. For the latter I never developed the skill (or patience) for really nice Cursive. Usually I make due with a certain degree of "merely okay" quick writing. THEN there is the rapid wrist flicking of what I tend to call "chicken scratch" penmanship that sometimes even I myself have a hard time reading. This latter form is really only achievable on small paper...3in x 5in being ideal...where I can write as fast as the words develop or even outpace.
I never learned it because all the schools i went didn't bother to teach it at all only time i had a lesson on it was in 11th grade just for one class even then i still dont know how to write or read cursive
Those liars told me that "everything in high school is written in cursive". Now my handwriting involves a lot of my letters being close together and looping into each other; aka, unintelligible.
My son is 11 and he had to sign something recently...but didn't know how. I looked at him and asked "you haven't learned how to sign your name" because I legit thought they would have taught him that by now. He was like "no" which had me very confused as to why they were asking for his signature if they never taught him cursive...I am just going to have to do my best to teach him....I suck at teaching but Imma give it a go.
You might have to go Ultra old school and dot out everything out and have him trace it my aunt was a teacher aide and that's how my cousin and I learned how to write our alphabets are numbers our address and that was before we were four. I taught or tutored so many kids in the same fashion as I gotten older and it helps but if you got carpal tunnel it will kill you

I've modified my print to look like calligraphy. For some reason my cursive also always took longer than my print, so i really havent looked back. Still sign in cursive though

My coworkers were literally talking about this the other day! A college one of them went to pulled her aside to talk cause most of her professors couldn't read her handwriting. She was taught it at a young age but most of her life teachers weren't.

Certain old documents are only in cursive.Yes, the text has been digitalised, but still. If, at one point, no-one who knows cursive were still around and all the books etc. explaining it lost, how would people decipher a newly discovered old piece of writing?
For one thing, cursive writing is a great way for children to practice and improve their fine motor skills. That's why when they begin writing cursive the letters are so poorly formed, but improve so much with practice.
As a Gen Z, I will admit I only know how to sign my name. In my school we were only taught cursive for one year, and that was it, so I mostly forgot everything I learned.
Younger millenial here, and yeah it was the same for us. 2nd grade (like 1998 I think) and the teacher told us we'd probably only use it to sign our name or to read someone else's so we only learned it that year and most people only learned that much and forgot the rest.
I distinctly remember in fourth grade, we had cursive textbooks. My teacher kept reminding us how important it would be in fifth grade and middle/high school. The next year, we cut it out of the curriculum and I never wrote in cursive again except for my signature, which isn't even cursive, just squiggles

I’m a sophomore, I asked every freshman I had in my classes if they can write in cursive or read in cursive, 2 of them could write and read cursive, 12 of them could read cursive and the remaining 16 looked at the page I wrote like it was upside down and backwards
Going into senior year, I can _half-read_ cursive, and my handwriting is a Frankenstein mix of semi-cursive writing and just had print. With reading it, I can make out some words and sentences better than others, and with writing it, usually I write my S’, my E’s, my Y’s and G’s in a cursive font, and some other letters *sometimes.* Having Dysgraphia makes it hard to write well unfortunately, which is why I got a school-issued laptop as part of my IEP, because my writing use to be *_so_*_ bad_ that it was practically impossible to read it properly. It’s *much* better now at least, _so that’s a _*_plus._*
Got my associates last year and I can read cursive almost perfectly... But not individual letters, does that make sense? And as for writing... Forget about it 😅

He gave me and our small class the advice of: the only thing you _need_ to know how to write is your signature. I would say that’s [one of] the most important things I learned last year.

I remember my uncle put a ton of pressure on me to learn to write in cursive. He's the kind of guy who makes everything sound worse than it is, and I have severe anxiety issues. Eventually it felt as if I couldn't write perfect cursive I would explode. So when I was eventually told that I didn't actually NEED to write in cursive to continue breathing, I wanted to do things I'm probably not allowed to say in a UA-cam shorts comment.

Good cursive is hard to find. No one really writes cursive well, so everything looks like a giant squiggle. With print you can tell what someone wrote even if it’s bad. I think they must’ve removed cursive teaching because kids write so terribly as it is
It was removed from standardized curriculums because it wasn't seen as necessary sometime in the late 2000s. Some schools still teach it but its not a standard anymore. Odd since we all are expected to sign our names in cursive and most peoples notes ive read are in cursive or in mixed cursive.
My class was the last class to learn cursive as part of common core. I was so pissed about it but I kept the practice books and gave them to my sister so she could learn.
We had to PASS penmanship each year when I was in primary school. I still use cursive as a teacher. Kids figure out how to read it after a couple of weeks. 😂

I use a very specific squiggly mark extremely consistently. I don't even sign my name. I was able to catch it due to the simple fact they signed my name in cursive like a normal signature. Hahah
Gen X here. Cursive was the bane of my existence in grades 2-8. I just couldn't write neatly, no matter how much I tried. Even when I did it slow, my penmanship was atrocious, and when I did it fast enough to finish assignment and tests in class, it was borderline illegible. Half my teachers though I just needed more practise, so they'd keep me in at recess to write out lines. The other half thought thought I was lazy and didn't care.

I don’t get why it’s not taught anymore. I get that it can be a little difficult for someone like me who is left handed and am dyslexic with ADHD ❤ that struggled in school SO if I can do it and come out with good penmanship WHY can’t the average right handed neurotypical kid learn it. What’s else is wrong with them? Our Forefathers had amazing penmanship and these issues were present back then with even more obstacles (like writing with quills and ink bottles) dang the average person isn’t going to survive the future.

This takes me back. We spent third and fourth grade learning cursive and we were expected to write that way for the rest of our time in that school. Even to this day I still prefer to use cursive and it's sad how few people I know still use it

I remember my 7th grade English teacher telling us that we had to practice our cursive because we would have to write all our 8th grade English papers in cursive. The school got a grant for computers that summer, so we all had to type them instead.
There is a short video of someone explaining the mechanics of the quill pen. From there, I realized why penmanship was so important prior to the 20th century. The ink-well pen with metal nib was a game changer. The ballpoint pen made handwriting a breeze and accessible to the masses. The monitor made it obsolete. 😂
In 7th grade (2007) all of my teachers told us, “if your cursive isn’t neat, just print”. I use a hybrid that’s basically print connected like cursive 😂

Gen Z here! My dad bought some books that helped you write cursive (like they had sentences you write over to work on your cursive four or five times) so I learned cursive as well, just not at school.
@@SpringNotes You can print out papers with lines you can write over to help with your cursive. That's what helped me as a kid. There are other ways to learn as well, like by looking it up online or from a book in the library and writing in cursive in your notebook.

My class was the last to learn cursive. We had a freshman friend in high school that we used to pass cursive notes to just to mess with him. He came back the next year having gotten his grandmother to teach him cursive that summer. His handwriting was amazing and he ended up selling hand made holiday cards for $2 a pop until he graduated.

I remember when I moved to NJ in fifth grade and was writing in cursive, all the other kids were in awe (I had lived in PA and was taught cursive two years prior). When the teacher saw their reactions to my script, she created a weekly lesson plan to at least help them learn their signatures. As a Gen Z, I prefer cursive.

When he was in 3rd grade, they had cursive worksheet that were optional extra credit assignments and most of his classmates didn’t do them.

Oh and in my country, we were being taught in Year 2 and 3 how to write in cursive and then in Year 4 the teacher stated that learning cursive was no longer practical for primary school students and will only be taught in high school, but when we got to high school and I asked the English teacher about writing in cursive they said they stopped having that happen in 2015, which was when I was in Year 5, two years before entering high school.
I learned cursive in 3rd grade, some 23 years ago, and I still write pretty much exclusively in cursive, unless I'm writing instructions for someone else... then I write it out in cursive to get what I want down and then transcribe it to print. Printing takes forever though, because I'm not as comfortable using it and have to take my time to make it neat.

2nd Grade back in about 1990.
My handwriting has never been great...even my normal penmanship & Cursive for it to be decent has to be done slowly. For the latter I never developed the skill (or patience) for really nice Cursive. Usually I make due with a certain degree of "merely okay" quick writing. THEN there is the rapid wrist flicking of what I tend to call "chicken scratch" penmanship that sometimes even I myself have a hard time reading. This latter form is really only achievable on small paper...3in x 5in being ideal...where I can write as fast as the words develop or even outpace.
I never learned it because all the schools i went didn't bother to teach it at all only time i had a lesson on it was in 11th grade just for one class even then i still dont know how to write or read cursive
also when you buy a house especially you have to sign a shit of papers using cursive is easier on the hand. but yeah using cursive save time

My son is 11 and he had to sign something recently...but didn't know how. I looked at him and asked "you haven't learned how to sign your name" because I legit thought they would have taught him that by now. He was like "no" which had me very confused as to why they were asking for his signature if they never taught him cursive...I am just going to have to do my best to teach him....I suck at teaching but Imma give it a go.
You might have to go Ultra old school and dot out everything out and have him trace it my aunt was a teacher aide and that's how my cousin and I learned how to write our alphabets are numbers our address and that was before we were four. I taught or tutored so many kids in the same fashion as I gotten older and it helps but if you got carpal tunnel it will kill you

I used to have to take my spelling tests to the teacher when we partner graded. No one could read my cursive despite us all spending all of 4th grade learning it, 5th grade being forced to use it, and 6 th grade having the occasional assignment in it. 90% of my writing is in cursive because it's faster than printing. And I think it's prettier, it's the Western version of Eastern calligraphy.

It's one of those things that are easy to learn. Especially if you only want to learn how to read. If you want to learn it, do so. Certain old documents are only in cursive.Yes, the text has been digitalised, but still. If, at one point, no-one who knows cursive were still around and all the books etc. explaining it lost, how would people decipher a newly discovered old piece of writing?
For one thing, cursive writing is a great way for children to practice and improve their fine motor skills. That's why when they begin writing cursive the letters are so poorly formed, but improve so much with practice.
As a Gen Z, I will admit I only know how to sign my name. In my school we were only taught cursive for one year, and that was it, so I mostly forgot everything I learned.
Younger millenial here, and yeah it was the same for us. 2nd grade (like 1998 I think) and the teacher told us we'd probably only use it to sign our name or to read someone else's so we only learned it that year and most people only learned that much and forgot the rest.

Going into senior year, I can _half-read_ cursive, and my handwriting is a Frankenstein mix of semi-cursive writing and just had print. With reading it, I can make out some words and sentences better than others, and with writing it, usually I write my S’, my E’s, my Y’s and G’s in a cursive font, and some other letters *sometimes.*
Having Dysgraphia makes it hard to write well unfortunately, which is why I got a school-issued laptop as part of my IEP, because my writing use to be *_so_*_ bad_ that it was practically impossible to read it properly.
It’s *much* better now at least, _so that’s a _*_plus._*

He gave me and our small class the advice of: the only thing you _need_ to know how to write is your signature. I would say that’s [one of] the most important things I learned last year.

I remember my uncle put a ton of pressure on me to learn to write in cursive. He's the kind of guy who makes everything sound worse than it is, and I have severe anxiety issues. Eventually it felt as if I couldn't write perfect cursive I would explode.
So when I was eventually told that I didn't actually NEED to write in cursive to continue breathing, I wanted to do things I'm probably not allowed to say in a UA-cam shorts comment.

Good cursive is hard to find. No one really writes cursive well, so everything looks like a giant squiggle. With print you can tell what someone wrote even if it’s bad. I think they must’ve removed cursive teaching because kids write so terribly as it is
I had a college accounting teacher that said she only writes in cursive so we’ll need to know how to read it😆; not a problem.

I was learning Cursive in school but as we were learning it they just stopped teaching us suddenly, i dont know why
It was removed from standardized curriculums because it wasn't seen as necessary sometime in the late 2000s. Some schools still teach it but its not a standard anymore. Odd since we all are expected to sign our names in cursive and most peoples notes ive read are in cursive or in mixed cursive.
We started learning cursive in 4th and then the teacher got in trouble for teaching it to us 💀
I feel so old. My third month of third grade I had to write my first book report in cursive.
My class was the last class to learn cursive as part of common core. I was so pissed about it but I kept the practice books and gave them to my sister so she could learn.

As a Gen Alpha, my normal handwriting is a mix of cursive and normal hand writing. I also know how to do normal cursive alone, too.
We had to PASS penmanship each year when I was in primary school. I still use cursive as a teacher. Kids figure out how to read it after a couple of weeks. 😂

I was held back a year (way back in the 70’s or was it early 80’s?…I’d have to look) for a D in penmanship! I had trouble keeping m & n straight.

Cursive and having my own signature helped me get back stolen irs funds during the pandemic. I love that my name is long & complicated because that's how we caught them. 😅😂 Sad case for them.
I use a very specific squiggly mark extremely consistently. I don't even sign my name. I was able to catch it due to the simple fact they signed my name in cursive like a normal signature. Hahah
Gen X here. Cursive was the bane of my existence in grades 2-8. I just couldn't write neatly, no matter how much I tried. Even when I did it slow, my penmanship was atrocious, and when I did it fast enough to finish assignment and tests in class, it was borderline illegible. Half my teachers though I just needed more practise, so they'd keep me in at recess to write out lines. The other half thought thought I was lazy and didn't care.

I actually don’t see how difficult cursive is. I thought it was easy, didn’t know it was literal hell for some people 😅. I write in cursive because it’s relaxing for me, and I’m Gen Z 😂!
I think that's fucked to keep you from having recess to further stress your child self out by instead of having a break from the school they just give you more school everybody else is getting a break. I'm surprised they didn't have you bring your lunch to the classroom so they can continue "teaching"
Same, no matter how hard I tried to write in cursive it was always garbage. I regularly got detention over it because my teacher thought I was just being lazy.
I'm a millennial. I remember learning cursive in 3rd grade. I don't use cursive now. The only time I use cursive is to sign my name.

am 22, it never stuck with me, i can read it just fine but my hands can't wright it. its the same as me being able to do an algebra question in my head and get the right answer but not able to put it on paper
29, I write in mixed cursive and print. Most letters flow faster in cursive and for the ones that don't I write them in print and switch back and forth as needed pretty seamlessly
I’m 21 and my writing was completely destroyed when I was forced to learn cursive and even now I can’t use block letters anymore it’s been so irrevertably drilled into me
I don’t get why it’s not taught anymore. I get that it can be a little difficult for someone like me who is left handed and am dyslexic with ADHD ❤ that struggled in school SO if I can do it and come out with good penmanship WHY can’t the average right handed neurotypical kid learn it. What’s else is wrong with them? Our Forefathers had amazing penmanship and these issues were present back then with even more obstacles (like writing with quills and ink bottles) dang the average person isn’t going to survive the future.
