    *Safety First: To any concerned viewers out there, please note that safety precautions were used in filming this video and that Ben (the driver) was wearing a GoPro and not holding a phone while driving.
    Okay all, that’s enough left-turn-lecturing! If you remember only ONE thing from today’s video, then please remember to be mindful of “The Big THREE” things when making a left turn:
    - The traffic,
    - The crosswalk with pedestrians,
    - and the traffic lights.
    If you can remember to do that, you’ve won half the battle my friend!
    Until next time my automotive-minded-scholars, from Ben and every driving-loving person here at Drivers Ed Direct - please stay safe out there!

    Left turns are so easy there! In my city we pass over the center of the intersection (on the right side of it) otherwise the cars behind would honk you, it's very crowded in the middle. In your video it's just 1-2 cars from the opposite direction that turn left and all lanes are in same alignment with the opposite ones, it's super easy.

  • @cece826

    I hate going into, intersection i always wait behind line, but then sometime the cars honk me to go but i don't like that thought of being in the middle lol

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  7 місяців тому +13

      Hello and thanks for sharing! We hear you - it can definitely be stressful making these tough left turns! However, when the light turns green and the intersection is clear, it is good to move about a fourth or a third of the way into the intersection so that you are in a good potion to make your turn when a safe opening presents itself. If you remain behind the line, it will make it harder for you to clear the intersection in a timely manner (and frustrate drivers behind you, as you know first hand). Hang in there and keep practicing. It does get easier the more you do it, best of luck!!

      @@DriversEdDirectHELP Plz ❤ so for me light goes green not protected straight green light. Big ole work truck behind the line in front of me cant see into my line so i pull up in middle. And car honks at me when road is empty but i cant see the full lane as im making my left turn from the intersection because of this big truck. Car honk because i wouldnt go. But i just couldnt see. So i was gonna wait until my light turns red then take a peek then make my left turn because of this big truck. Any advice?

    • @Nobodyyy4
      @Nobodyyy4 7 місяців тому

      @@DriversEdDirectalso if it red cars can also run red light so what if i stick my head out window if that truck is blocking me infront of me as i make left hand turn. That will help me have more visibility bwcause i only can see half of the lane before sticking head out window. What do you think? If its tooo much ill just turn into a shop center and go that around that way.

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  7 місяців тому +6

      @@Nobodyyy4 Hello!! That is a tough situation and one that will happen from time to time. First and foremost: never make your turn if you aren't 100% sure it is safe to go. If you can't see clearly, then don't turn until you can - even if someone behind you is honking. With that said, there are things to do to set yourself up for success when a large vehicle across from you is blocking your vision:
      1) When a large truck is across from you, don't go as far into the intersection when you wait for your left turn. This extra space will give you a wider view of the road. Staying a few feet further back will make it easier for you to see.
      2) While you want to stay safely within your lane, position yourself as far left in your lane as safely possible, so that you can tilt your head to the left and see better around the obstacles that are blocking your view.
      If all else fails, just be patient and just wait for the truck that is blocking your view to turn and clear the intersection (as you suggested). Sometimes that’s just how it is and you have to play it safe, even if it means waiting a half a minute and getting honked at. If you guess and go when it’s not safe, you’ll be the one getting into an accident or getting a ticket - not the person behind you that is honking.
      Hope that helps! Please stay safe out there!

    So far, this is the most helpful one I've seen on UA-cam!!! It is better than any other one because it covers many scenarios. It is very unique! Thank you very much! Please consider making more videos with A LOT OF EXAMPLES regarding specific traffic rules like this one (ex., right turn, changing lanes, merging, taking an exit, etc.). I believe that your great content will attract more viewers!

    Excellent video!! As a new driver, even though I learnt through different YT videos, this one clearly explained about certain scenarios which I never saw in other videos properly. 1. Left turn by committing into intersection, and turn during green, yellow and red signal. This clarified lot of my questions. 2. Excellent way of using Center turning lane especially if we couldn't take a complete left run and safely take left turn through the center turning lane. Wow!. May be in a week, I am going for the road test and this video gave me lot of inputs. Thank you so much Ben!!

Always make sure everything is clear (traffic, pedestrians, bikes, etc) before you start you turn. If the traffic is too heavy, making a right turn instead and going around the block is a great option. Thanks again and please stay safe!

    • @skr0nytbe389
      @skr0nytbe389 4 місяці тому

      Turning on yellow can be done only if we are committed into the intersection right? We have 3 second to clear the intersection. If we start committing into intersection in yellow we shall possibly blocking the traffic right?

    • @tidus7081
      @tidus7081 4 місяці тому

      @@skr0nytbe389 yes but thats the problem with the system. you are forced into these "committed" situations because you are forced to go into the middle of the intersection and wait for an opening. You won't be blocking any traffic. The opposing traffic will wait for you to complete your turn. They are nice people.

    I love this video because I’ve done turns on these same streets so it’s very familiar and very helpful. Balboa/Devonshire, Lassen/Reseda, Reseda/Devonshire (which is a notorious intersection), Nordhoff/Reseda etc. Road test is soon so I’m getting in as much practice as possible. My trouble right now is I tend to accelerate as soon as I come out of the turn. I know I should coast a little after the turn and then out of the turn accelerate up to speed. It’s almost as if my brain is trying to push the car to get out of the way in case the car behind me is trying to bushwhack me. You know these streets, some of these drivers around CSUN are quite aggressive and I have had several race around me as I was going the posted speed limit. They speed past a sign outside a middle or high school marked 25 mph. It’s a fight not to go above the speed limit because they are going above the speed limit.

For your left turns, I completely understand what you are saying, you want to clear that intersection as quickly as possible to avoid any drama. The more you practice, the more you'll be able to get the timing just right, where you clear the intersection as quickly as possible, while still controlling the vehicle smoothly and safely. Let us know how your test goes, and if you haven't seen this test prep video yet, give it a watch! ua-cam.com/video/m7h5bLIIoNI/v-deo.html

    And speaking of left turns-just because the green left turn arrow disappears doesn’t mean you can’t make the turn as long as the regular light is green! You don’t have to stay behind the line and wait for the whole light to cycle just for the arrow to come on! If you’re terrified of the cameras, as long as you’re past the stop line, even if the light changes back to red, it will not pop you. Go into the intersection and wait for opposing traffic to clear then make the turn.

      Hello! On a left turn, you can technically turn into any open lane, as long as it is safe. However, we recommend the lane closest to the middle yellow line because it is usually the safest - in case the cars across from you are turning right and they turn into the other lane. Hope that helps!!

    Can you discuss issues with a car being second in a left turn lane making the left prior to the original car to enter the intersection. I was patiently waiting for safe opportunity to make the left turn as the turning lane light was off. Still green though to go straight. Another driver got impatient and made left behind me cutting me off. Cursing me out like I am one in wrong.

    if you move out a bit to the intersection on a a solid green and it turns yellow when you are waiting does that mean there should always be enough time to make the turn, in other words if it goes yellow the oncoming traffic should be stopping ?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  8 місяців тому +1

      Hello! If the light is going yellow, it is a warning that the light will soon be turning red and that you need to clear the intersection when it is safe. In general, when a light turns yellow, oncoming traffic should never accelerate at all - they SHOULD attempt to slow down and stop if safe. If they are already too close to the intersection to safely stop, then they can continue to coast through the intersection on the yellow light using their momentum (but again, they should not accelerate). Using this approach, oncoming traffic should be able to either safely stop or make the yellow light by coasting, but never have to "run the red light". With that said, not everyone follows the traffic rules, so if you are waiting to make a left turn with your car already in the intersection and the light turns yellow, you must be 100% sure that all oncoming cars are slowing to a stop or have cleared the intersection before you commit to your left turn. Unfortunately, many oncoming cars will see the yellow light and incorrectly accelerate to try and beat the red light, if that makes sense. So please be safe!
      Hope that helps!

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  День тому

      Hello! Here's a quick tip for making left turns at solid green or flashing yellow lights:
      No Stop Needed: You don’t have to stop at the limit line before entering the intersection. If the road is clear of cars and pedestrians, you can smoothly make your left turn without stopping. Always remember to check for traffic.
      Here’s my usual approach to a left turn (though it might vary based on the situation):
      1 - Signal: Turn on your left signal.
      2 - Check your mirrors
      3 - Blind-Spot Check: Look over your left shoulder to check your blind spot and the sidewalk before moving into the left-turn lane.
      4- Scan the Intersection: As you approach, scan the intersection quickly: look left-right-left.
      5 - Make the Turn: If everything is clear, make your turn.
      6 - Stop if Needed: If you need to stop for an obstacle, keep scanning while you wait.
      7 - Final Check: Before turning, look over your left shoulder again and quickly check left-right-left to ensure it's safe.
      Hope this helps!

    @25:13, what is the right course of action if the light turns red and you have already inched out but the oncoming traffic is queuing up too?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  8 місяців тому +2

      Hello, great question! If the light turns red and you have already entered the intersection (either fully or partially), you are required to make your turn when it is safe and clear. If there are oncoming cars still coming (running the red light), you wait for them to clear and then make your turn when safe. Cross-traffic from the sides should wait for you to clear the intersection before they go on their green light. Just make sure it is 100% safe before your turn, but definitely make the turn... if you do not turn you will be blocking the crosswalk or intersection.
      Hope that helps!

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  3 місяці тому +1

      Hello! The oncoming traffic going straight would have the right-of-way. Also, you want to be aware of vehicles across from you that are turning right - they should turn into the rightmost lane, leaving your the left lane open to turn into, but you never know what the other vehicle might do. In that particular example, you can see that we had a lot of cars across from us who made last second moves or didn't use their turn signals. We had to assume they might go straight, so that is why we were patient and yielded to them until we were certain it was safe to make the turn. Hope that helps!

    My biggest problem is always thinking I’m too close to my left traffic lines, so I give myself space but then I’m too close to the right turn. What should I do?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  8 місяців тому +3

      Hello! It's natural to feel like you're too close to the left lane lines with the oncoming traffic being so close to you - it can be intimidating! The reality is, even if you visually feel like you are on the left lane line, if you were to open your door you'd see you have 1-2 feet of space between your car and the left lane line. A little trick you can do to line yourself up while driving is this: Your left front bumper or headlight should visually look like it is intersecting or "eating" the left lane line. Just make sure you use quick glances when checking this reference and don't lose sight of the most important thing, which is the traffic ahead of you.
      Hope that helps!

      Hello! You can do it, have confidence in your abilities and just do your best. Before any right turn, always SMOG (*S*ignal, *M*irror, *O*ver the Shoulder, *G*o) - you actually do this before every lane change and especially before turning right and left. Always check your mirrors and over your shoulder for traffic and pedestrians before turning.
      Also, you want to check left-right-left before entering ANY intersection, whether you are turning or not. You will usually do this left-right-left after you SMOG as described above

      Hello! When you are already in the intersection when the light turns from yellow to red, you are obligated to clear the intersection when safe. If you don't make the turn in that situation after the light turns red, you will be left sitting in the intersection, blocking the crosswalk and potentially cross traffic - which is both illegal and dangerous. Hope that helps!

      Ah yes, the dreaded "honks and fingers" - well put. You may get a few more of those while you are still learning when it is safe to go, but that's OK! I'll gladly take a few unkind hand gestures in exchange for staying safe and not making a dangerous turn out of peer pressure. As time goes and the more confident you get, the better your timing will become and fewer impatient drivers will honk at you. Also, the majority of people on the road are actually very patient and courteous, and won't mind waiting a few extra seconds for safety's sake. Thankfully, most people remember that they too were learning to drive once, so they'll gladly exercise a little patience. For those who don't and are giving you the "honks and fingers", there's not much you can do but ignore them the best you can and don't engage them. Take care of yourself and your own safety first and never feel pressured to make a maneuver if you don't think it is safe.
