Most videos here on UA-cam, turning left there is hardly anyone in front of the instructors, I live in a congested suburban town, can you do MORE when there is many cars in front of you turning left, instead of just being you and maybe another car, because I know we have to decide if we can even put our car into the intersection if it’s to congestion but light is still active green. I’m still not confident on turning left in a left turn lane on a green light with a busy/congested intersection for driving test and for general driving. Thank you very much! My advice for taking a road test: do it somewhere that is relatively rural whether it’s a small town or just a less busy area. I took it in my small hometown and it was very easy but you can go to a nearby small town as well. Hope this helps 😊

Thanks for these videos. I'm not a young new driver but it's been many years since I've driven and the traffic in some areas of my state is really awful. I get so much driving anxiety. Make some more left turn videos!! Intersections seem to be the biggest problems.

Thanks for posting this. I recently had an issue like this at a left turn intersection. Lanes on all four sides going both to and fro. It was not an advanced left though and the middle of the intersection was unusually wide. I got stuck in the middle cos I couldn’t accurately gauge oncoming vehicle albeit a reckless driver that changed lanes at the last minute.

I was recently visiting Florida from UK and was turning left into a shop there was no turning lane or arrow on the signal it was green but I stopped behind the stop line as it was not safe to turn due to oncoming traffic but the guy in the truck behind me who was also turning left was going nuts on his horn what did I do wrong should I of entered the junction I think you call it an un protected turn? Oh my goodness I been watching your vids , for my road test preparation for March 27th. But my biggest concern was the turning left as solid green light, and where do I yeild? At the line or in the intersection. Some instructors in videos said if your already in the intersection ima green light grinding to traffic across from you and might turn red yiur aldewdy legally over the line bc you came in at a green light so that’s not deduction I asked the girl I took a lesson with and she said to stop at the line at green light if I seen On coming traffic, not in intersection so many different things being said but I take your advice and my lesson lady because you both are saying same thing. So this was my biggest concern and I’m soooooo happy you have a whole video on this I’m a mom of two boys and I need to start driving . The woman said the test at the school I’m Doing it at is fairly simple compared to dmv and I don’t have to parallel park only reverse !!!! Yay And yes I had my lessons but I feel like there’s things I needed to to know that don’t get addressed the instructor was overly confident in me I think bc I come across as confident as well. And I am 25 LOL so . Well me and the instructor were talking about life the whole time . And about her relationship ship. I was giving her a lot of advice. And she is 4 years older then me but She was really interested on Mya device I even told her to exchange numbers Anyways Thankyou so much Rick for this video.

Driving should actually minimize the concept of judgement. In other parts of the world all left turns are protected, unlike here in North America. I honestly believe unprotected left turns should be banned.

That was great, Rick, thanks! Made me think: It was absolutely necessary for me to teach my driving students the S maneuver when I lived and worked in Toronto. Here, in Sudbury, Northern Ontario, not so much except for a few problematic intersections. I avoid doing it or teaching it here because other drivers don't expect it as part of their Northern driving experience. They are not familiar with the S maneuver up here, so when an on-coming driver sees me do the jig-jog, it kind of freaks them out a bit because they think I might be proceeding through the intersection right in front of them. You can watch them either start to slow down or veer to their right when I begin the maneuver to the left until they realize I've straightened my wheels out again. It's very useful in high traffic cities though.

Hi I failed my road test for causing obstruction. I was the first car on stop line, had a solid green light but there was lot of oncoming traffic so decided not to enter the intersection as I was sure that there is no gap in the oncoming traffic and I cannot clear when the light is still green. Examiner told me that you must enter the intersection. Once oncoming traffic stops you will have your right of way. What is your opinion on this.

trust me, its not that hard. I mean it depends on what time you take it. If possible, take it in the morning when there is less traffic. If you do this, it will be easier. You have to pick up speed once you are in the acceleration lane and have ur blinker on. Do your shoulder check and mirror check as well than merge when safe. For exiting, decelerate/brake at the posted speed limit
In my province (MB, Canada) you have to establish in an intersection when making a left turn and it's a green light otherwise you fail your exam. You can't stay stopped at the stop lines.
@Smart Drive Test Hi, I just have one doubt. When I pull forward on a green light to turn left and I am looking at my left shoulder and there is a pedestrian there who just started the crossing. Should I wait before the pedestrian covers crosswalks completely on both sides or I can make a turn into the lane as the ped is still in the other lane?
Rick, (i) you cross your hands when making these and right turns. Is this allowed? (ii) shouldn't it always be into the *right* lane, unless the examiner tells us we will subsequently be making a quick left turn again?

Hello, I have a question why is it that in some intersections when I see the light turn green to go left some cars just go without stopping and in other intersections you have to slowly move up and zig zag like you said and wait for traffic to go
Some intersection will have an advanced green giving left turning traffic priority. 3:25 when you make this left turn as the light turns yellow, if you were made to wait for others cars that go through the yellow light and then have a red light as a result before being able to turn. Would that be a fail ?
These are excellent examples! I am wondering as I live in NY state and on the driver’s test form, one has to stop near the center of the road before making a left turn at an intersection (not a lot of left turn lanes) and was wondering if there are clips or content you’ve made about this or if stopping in the center is just a NY state requirement.
It is still the L turn like shown in this video and I’ve seen people talk about being center is your knees being center with the divider between lanes. I’ve just always felt hesitant about this and it makes my claim of the intersection a bit hesitant.

Can I email you a pic of an intersection I have to do on my test. The cars turning left in one lane block the cars going straight so when I turn left I can’t see the cars coming and sometimes I sit through two or three lights before I even get a chance

Quick question - will the oncoming traffic always have their red when we have the green in a multi lane left turn? I mean are there any situations where multi lanes have to enter the intersection and wait for oncoming traffic to stop?
I have g2 but I frequently face problem turning left. Gets confused where actually it starts. Infact today smashed my left tire on divider. It got punctured and don't know how much damage happened to car it is making sound while going over 50...
I failed my first test recently though it wasnt for messing up this type of turn, oddly i "ran a red light" when the main 2 lanes had that red light despite the turning lane having gone green when i turned, definitely a bit weird to me the reasoning
Can you make a video elaborating on the positions where the 1st car , 2nd and 3rd cars should position in a left turning intersection ( with green and with advanced green both ) please, for the purpose of the road test ? according to the position you are in the line up to turn , it makes a big difference where you wait isn’t it ? For instance I was told when the advanced green is short duration in some places , 2nd car stays behind the cross walk without following the first car and going in to the intersection.. thanks .

when i was driving I was going to approach the traffic light the adance green went away but the normal green traffic light was still there I was getting ready to yield to the oncoming traffic but nobody went so I quickly cleared the intersection
What's the proper procedure when two cars meet at the same time at an intersection from opposite directions but they both want to make left turns. I have always driven far enough into the intersection and turned left after the other car passes by my driver's side. IMPORTANT QUESTION: I just had this happen while practicing driving. What if you are preparing to turn left and you've pulled over the crosswalk, but there are still pedestrians walking across the crosswalk when the light turns yellow??
Realize that this situation rarely, rarely happens. You'll have to make a split second decision owing to the fact that the pedestrians on the cross street are jay-walking. Are you going to stay where you are - and in most cases on a driver's test that would be a fail. And the second option is to go. Know that you own the intersection, and you're going to have to wait for them to clear. If it's that late in the light, I suspect the pedestrian is going to be running because the cross traffic is going to be going shortly. All the best, Cheers Rick
What if we established to make a left turn and have unclear view of incoming traffic due to the front traffic is also established to a left turn and we do not wanted to jigjog to have a better view of incoming traffic?
can not go on yellow. I try to ignore that for now. I had been in middle turn after start on green light and was still behind a car light changed to yellow and the tester said you whent through a red light. . no going on yellow during a test.
If I reached an uncontrolled intersection first and want to make a left turn, I wait for gap in cross traffic. But while I wait a vehicle on the right entered the left turning lane. Who has the right of way ? Me or the one on right which arrived later than me ?
I'm so nervous to do this. There is no adult classes in my area and I have been trying to get help since before the pandemic! Now I'm a mom to twin 18month olds and I am desperate. Most videos here on UA-cam, turning left there is hardly anyone in front of the instructors, I live in a congested suburban town, can you do MORE when there is many cars in front of you turning left, instead of just being you and maybe another car, because I know we have to decide if we can even put our car into the intersection if it’s to congestion but light is still active green. I’m still not confident on turning left in a left turn lane on a green light with a busy/congested intersection for driving test and for general driving.

My advice for taking a road test: do it somewhere that is relatively rural whether it’s a small town or just a less busy area. I took it in my small hometown and it was very easy but you can go to a nearby small town as well. Hope this helps 😊

Thanks for posting this. I recently had an issue like this at a left turn intersection. Lanes on all four sides going both to and fro. It was not an advanced left though and the middle of the intersection was unusually wide. I got stuck in the middle cos I couldn’t accurately gauge oncoming vehicle albeit a reckless driver that changed lanes at the last minute.

I was recently visiting Florida from UK and was turning left into a shop there was no turning lane or arrow on the signal it was green but I stopped behind the stop line as it was not safe to turn due to oncoming traffic but the guy in the truck behind me who was also turning left was going nuts on his horn what did I do wrong should I of entered the junction I think you call it an un protected turn?

Oh my goodness I been watching your vids , for my road test preparation for March 27th. But my biggest concern was the turning left as solid green light, and where do I yeild? At the line or in the intersection. Some instructors in videos said if your already in the intersection ima green light grinding to traffic across from you and might turn red yiur aldewdy legally over the line bc you came in at a green light so that’s not deduction I asked the girl I took a lesson with and she said to stop at the line at green light if I seen
On coming traffic, not in intersection so many different things being said but I take your advice and my lesson lady because you both are saying same thing. Doing it at is fairly simple compared to dmv and I don’t have to parallel park only reverse !!!! Yay

Driving should actually minimize the concept of judgement. In other parts of the world all left turns are protected, unlike here in North America. I honestly believe unprotected left turns should be banned.

That was great, Rick, thanks! Made me think: It was absolutely necessary for me to teach my driving students the S maneuver when I lived and worked in Toronto. Here, in Sudbury, Northern Ontario, not so much except for a few problematic intersections. I avoid doing it or teaching it here because other drivers don't expect it as part of their Northern driving experience. They are not familiar with the S maneuver up here, so when an on-coming driver sees me do the jig-jog, it kind of freaks them out a bit because they think I might be proceeding through the intersection right in front of them. You can watch them either start to slow down or veer to their right when I begin the maneuver to the left until they realize I've straightened my wheels out again. It's very useful in high traffic cities though.

Hi I failed my road test for causing obstruction. I was the first car on stop line, had a solid green light but there was lot of oncoming traffic so decided not to enter the intersection as I was sure that there is no gap in the oncoming traffic and I cannot clear when the light is still green. Examiner told me that you must enter the intersection. Once oncoming traffic stops you will have your right of way. What is your opinion on this.

trust me, its not that hard. I mean it depends on what time you take it. If possible, take it in the morning when there is less traffic. If you do this, it will be easier. You have to pick up speed once you are in the acceleration lane and have ur blinker on. Do your shoulder check and mirror check as well than merge when safe. For exiting, decelerate/brake at the posted speed limit

In my province (MB, Canada) you have to establish in an intersection when making a left turn and it's a green light otherwise you fail your exam. You can't stay stopped at the stop lines.
@Smart Drive Test Hi, I just have one doubt. When I pull forward on a green light to turn left and I am looking at my left shoulder and there is a pedestrian there who just started the crossing. Should I wait before the pedestrian covers crosswalks completely on both sides or I can make a turn into the lane as the ped is still in the other lane?
Rick, (i) you cross your hands when making these and right turns. Is this allowed? (ii) shouldn't it always be into the *right* lane, unless the examiner tells us we will subsequently be making a quick left turn again?

In Oregon, you may turn on a red arrow light from a 1 way to a one way after you have stopped!
I have a question. In the left hand turn if the light is not a green arrow but is a solid green that always means yield to on coming traffic. Basically what I'm wondering is there ever any lights that Are green Where you have complete right of way, or should I always Yieled to a solid green light. During the test,for left turn,do we have to wait for the front way to b clear? If the vehicle infront if us is also waiting and blocking out view?or shall we proceeed by creeping a little and if the way is clear than complete the intersection?
Hello, I have a question why is it that in some intersections when I see the light turn green to go left some cars just go without stopping and in other intersections you have to slowly move up and zig zag like you said and wait for traffic to go
Some intersection will have an advanced green giving left turning traffic priority. 3:25 when you make this left turn as the light turns yellow, if you were made to wait for others cars that go through the yellow light and then have a red light as a result before being able to turn. Would that be a fail ?

These are excellent examples! I am wondering as I live in NY state and on the driver’s test form, one has to stop near the center of the road before making a left turn at an intersection (not a lot of left turn lanes) and was wondering if there are clips or content you’ve made about this or if stopping in the center is just a NY state requirement.
It is still the L turn like shown in this video and I’ve seen people talk about being center is your knees being center with the divider between lanes. I’ve just always felt hesitant about this and it makes my claim of the intersection a bit hesitant.

It helped me alot with my driving fear .These past days I got out of my comfort zone and drove further .I been watching your videos every night .I pray I passed my driving test !!! Can I email you a pic of an intersection I have to do on my test. The cars turning left in one lane block the cars going straight so when I turn left I can’t see the cars coming and sometimes I sit through two or three lights before I even get a chance

Quick question - will the oncoming traffic always have their red when we have the green in a multi lane left turn? I mean are there any situations where multi lanes have to enter the intersection and wait for oncoming traffic to stop?
I have g2 but I frequently face problem turning left.
Gets confused where actually it starts.
Infact today smashed my left tire on divider.
It got punctured and don't know how much damage happened to car it is making sound while going over 50...
I failed my first test recently though it wasnt for messing up this type of turn, oddly i "ran a red light" when the main 2 lanes had that red light despite the turning lane having gone green when i turned, definitely a bit weird to me the reasoning
Can you make a video elaborating on the positions where the 1st car , 2nd and 3rd cars should position in a left turning intersection ( with green and with advanced green both ) please, for the purpose of the road test ?
according to the position you are in the line up to turn , it makes a big difference where you wait isn’t it ?
For instance I was told when the advanced green is short duration in some places , 2nd car stays behind the cross walk without following the first car and going in to the intersection..

when i was driving I was going to approach the traffic light the adance green went away but the normal green traffic light was still there I was getting ready to yield to the oncoming traffic but nobody went so I quickly cleared the intersection
What's the proper procedure when two cars meet at the same time at an intersection from opposite directions but they both want to make left turns. I have always driven far enough into the intersection and turned left after the other car passes by my driver's side. But lately I'm noticing that the opposing left turners stop in the middle of the road and wait for me to turn left in FRONT of them. This seems crazy to me.

IMPORTANT QUESTION: I just had this happen while practicing driving. What if you are preparing to turn left and you've pulled over the crosswalk, but there are still pedestrians walking across the crosswalk when the light turns yellow??

Realize that this situation rarely, rarely happens. You'll have to make a split second decision owing to the fact that the pedestrians on the cross street are jay-walking. Are you going to stay where you are - and in most cases on a driver's test that would be a fail. And the second option is to go. Know that you own the intersection, and you're going to have to wait for them to clear. If it's that late in the light, I suspect the pedestrian is going to be running because the cross traffic is going to be going shortly. All the best, Cheers Rick

What if we established to make a left turn and have unclear view of incoming traffic due to the front traffic is also established to a left turn and we do not wanted to jigjog to have a better view of incoming traffic?

can not go on yellow. I try to ignore that for now. I had been in middle turn after start on green light and was still behind a car light changed to yellow and the tester said you whent through a red light. . no going on yellow during a test.
