I don't remember too many people owning Bandai's original DVDs. RLJ Entertainment's (As their former name "Image Entertainment") marketing of Bandai's more obscure anime hadn't helped either. How Image/RLJ would market Bandai's niche anime was to make spots for it to place between runs of more mainstream anime, usually when Universal cablecasted their anime through Syfy, which was subject to regularly being programmed in graveyard hours before an abrupt end in summer 2011. Now most of the anime licensors that Universal/Syfy would sublicense their anime from are gone, save for two licensors (or three since TV Asahi directly supplied Tenjho Tenge), but that's something for another time.
iirc I direct downloaded them one by one from some myfreewebs fansite with a crappy little chatroom, I still remember xx_XX_InuKag_XX_xx being a snob about which fansub was used. The early 00s was... something.
I'd love to see a modern take on Lucky Star, but would hate to see it bastardize into Pop Team Epic with a Lucky Star skin. Unfortunately, the latter is probably more likely.
hazel: I lied. This isn't a video about Lucky Star, it's a video about an experimental variety magazine. Now watch me cook omurice for 6 minutes. Me: Hell yeah I will.
There's a reason I still use a Konata avatar after all these years. Lucky Star is more than just my favorite anime series, it's the series that changed the course of my life all those years ago. From the very first episode, I was instantly captivated by the show's charm, wit, and humor. Finally, there was a series that actually got me and seemed to deal with issues that no other show at that time did. Not issues about saving the world, battling your inner demons, struggling with one's morality, or trying to rationalize the human condition, but "real" issues. Issues that mattered to me. Finding friends, going to school, cramming for tests, having fun, and living life. These characters were more real than any other characters I've ever seen anywhere else. You're not going to know the favorite foods of the characters in most other anime series unless it serves a purpose to the story. The brilliant thing about Lucky Star is... there is no story! Just like life itself! But more importantly, there were two things that Lucky Star did for me that I will always be thankful for. Firstly, it opened my eyes to the fact that there was a whole new world out there for me to explore. I didn't get any of the references, but it made me want to learn. What's this SOS Dan thing Konata keeps talking about? It made me feel like I was losing out by not watching these shows, and boy was I. From Haruhi to Code Geass, my anime repertoire grew from there. I found that anime was my "true calling," and I will always thank this series for leading me down the rabbit hole (in a good way). In addition to anime, it also introduced me to otaku culture. Lucky Star can be seen as a celebration of otaku culture (while still acknowledging and poking fun at its dark side from time to time). While I have gained a much deeper understanding and fuller picture of otaku culture over the next decade with shows (like NHK, Genshiken, Otaku no Video, etc...), books, and journals, Lucky Star is one of the few shows that truly has fun with it and makes it its own. Comiket? That was the first time I heard of it, and I was fascinated by the concept. Imagine my surprise when it was exactly the same as how it was portrayed in the anime when I finally managed to attend Comiket years later. I was living the anime. Lucky Star also introduced me to Japanese culture in general. School trips, New Year's festivities, festivals, customs, school system, etc... Again, I'm not going to claim that it was a totally accurate portrayal of Japanese culture or anything, but it was just as fascinating all the same and spurred me on to learn more by myself. From reflecting my life, it became a slice of my life. I made anime my life's passion. I picked up Japanese, dabbled in freelance translation, and through my intensive course of study in college, made a ton of friends with similar interests who I can say will be with me for life. Now, I have a postgrad degree in Japanese studies and have just passed my JLPT N1. I literally wouldn't be where I am today without this show. While the references in Lucky Star are dated, the characters, anecdotes, and vignettes are just as sincere, timeless, and relevant as they were back then. In our quest to be elitist, intellectual, and analytical, perhaps somewhere along the way, the characters cease being human. Even if Lucky Star is not your cup of tea (watch K-On! for that), if any genre is going to teach us about being human, I think this is the one to do it.
You managed to structure this video in the same way that the content of the magazine itself is structured. That is a stunning bit of craft film making right there.
i enjoy your content not because i'm very interested in otaku culture, indeed normally i'm quite apathetic, but because i very much enjoy the chill vibes of "neurodivergent person talking about their special interest", so thank you for projecting those chill and neurodivergent vibes and teaching me about a section of history i would otherwise know absolutely nothing about

It's so cool to see you mentioning the candies here. When I heard the news, I went out and bought some in a tin proper. To anyone seeing this: get some while you can because they're SO darn tasty!
At a time when 80% of "new" media is some form of adaptation/sequel/reboot/etc, this return of lucky star is one of the few that feels genuine and I'm so excited
the scanner woes were very relatable. my family’s printer has a scanner and its most fatal flaw is that anything it scans has a large horizontally spanning shadow that is absolutely headache inducing to get rid of through curve editing without messing up the other values in the image also that song in the outro was insane. cant wait for the full version!
Awesome news all around! Lucky Star is the anime that got me into anime, and even after all this time it's still in my top two favorites! I think it's practically criminal that VIZ hasn't printed the old manga volumes yet, and completely absurd that nobody has brought over the last volumes ever. The new spin off sounds amazing, I just turned 31 recently, so reading about Konata being 31 would be particularly a treat!
Ironically it was lucky star anime that started my old 80s jpop obsession that had led me to discovered hundreds of old artists way before plastic love and citypop even was recognized in the west. Lucky star has become such a huge part of my personality that I think I wouldn't like a version of myself without lucky star.
Honestly, the strangest feeling I had around Lucky Star coming back was when I mentioned it to someone else who wasn't _that_ much younger than me, and they had no clue what it was. The idea that one of the first shows that got me into anime in general (and also probably made me a little bit more comfortable with "girlier" things through the inexplicable powers of moe) is over a decade old, and has just kinda rested itself into the past enough that people might not even notice it is so strange. It like, _is_ anime/manga to me, in one of its purest forms.
Was this video purposefully supposed to mimic what that variety magazine had to offer? A little bit of manga, cooking, slice of life, and random thoughts. If so how wonderful and cozy this was.
I can vividly recall raw ripping the 3 part split episodes of the anime so I could then port them onto my ipod and rewatch them during lunch or the way home from school. Lucky Star has such a particular foot print on a specific point of my life and I'm heartened to see how celebrated it's return has been. Besides the point, but I could listen to you compare brands of water purifiers.
i like how 20 minutes into the video i completely forgot what or why i was watching this but just enjoyed the cooking session without any context whatsoever.
I love that they are having her age 31 for that spin off manga, which is how old I am now, idk I just really like that! Especially I got to enjoy the lucky star anime, an anime about high schoolers, as a high schooler, while it was airing. I'm nostalgic for that era of anime in general, waiting each week to pirate the next fan subbed episode, it was something to look forward to in those simpler times. It seemed like most new anime I was watching back then, I start watching them near the end of the school year and got to follow the rest of the season through summer break. Those were also the years when I discovered Vocaloid and Touhou, downloading so much of the music and started my image collections of the characters, that I still have going today, kind of a massive digital hoarder. I guess those years really defined much of my hobbies and interests, and to see a character I enjoyed from those years as having grown up to the same or around the same age as me, like life continued for them as well, that is so nice
I've seen a couple of chapters of a manga called "I Don't Know Much About Garage Kits." It's a little on the risqué side, but it's got a slow pace to it that's weirdly well pulled-off and a subtle, dry sense of humor, so it's pretty nice! Literally just a cute girl (I don't think she's in high school, but she's got a really cute design in a mature sort of way) working on garage kits and talking about the process. It came out in 2021, but it looks like it might be a bi-annual release, so there's probably not a tankobon you can pick up yet and I don't know who publishes it.
Oh! You can dry your chilis! You should dry your chilis! My family has an insane spice tolerance so they like to buy a shit ton of them and leave them out on grated pans or towels to sun-dry in the summer heat. They'll probably turn out spicer but they keep for like, forever in a spice cabinet.
For the record, as a Lucky Star stan, I would 1000% watch a 12 hour Lucky Star video from you and play it on repeat indefinitely. This brought so much joy to my heart, my dream of completing my lucky star manga collection with 9 and 10 feels 1% less like a pipe dream now lol. 😂😭🥺

Ty: "I'm not into otaku culture or anything but..." Me: "I'd like to first state that many people claiming to be otaku are actually weebs. Weebs are sweaty neckbeards like Hei and Rev while otaku are classy individuals like Hazel. You see, otaku take baths. They also respect the rights of others and enjoy manga/anime. Otaku do not use slurs like "trap" to refer to anime characters. Weebs do. Weebs are disgusting and are typically the first thing that comes to mind when talking about an anime's fanbase. Please do not conflate weebs to otaku. Otaku are good people. Weebs are filthy swine."
Man lucky star really sends me back. It sends me back to like that early 2010s internet and the really interesting time of the transition from small internet boards like 4chan, also less insane ones, to youtube, reddit, Twitter and the other big main social sites.
this is such a nice video, i don’t think i’ve felt so happy just watching a youtube video in so long. lucky star was my first ever anime and i still rewatch it bi-annually 10 years later. seeing another fan of it so happy and excited really made my entire week ! i also loved your cooking segment so much, it makes me want to cook omurice too !!
Honestly one of the best videos I’ve watched all year. Work was pretty rough today and this was exactly what I needed. I absolutely adore Lucky Star, it was the anime to get me back into anime (It also has Tsukasa Hiiragi), and seeing the manga get to continue again with a new spin off on the way in a magazine with an Urusei Yatsura 2022 article and an ad for Sonic Frontiers is so freaking cool to me. I loved how you went into detail about what the magazine is like, the other manga that’s in it, how you got it and the process of getting the magazine pages scanned, And then you incorporated a cooking video in here! I loved that, and I’m glad the dish came out good. If you made another video like this one when the May volume of the magazine comes out I wouldn’t mind at all! I didn’t know a video about a magazine could be this fun! Thank you so much for this video and I hope I’m not being too weird 🙏
Listening to you gush over things you love is always a joy and I will never tire of it. ♥ Also, if you incorporated more cooking into your videos, I would not be mad AT ALL. As I, too, love to cook, when the spark hits me.
I just wanna say I love watching your videos, I don’t know a lot about the things you talk about, but I love watching videos of people talk about their niche interests
I'm so excited for Lucky Star to come back! It was my go-to "cozy for the season" anime whenever I needed a pick me up, haha. I apologize if you get this question a lot, but do you know Japanese? I'm fairly new to your channel and appreciate the effort that goes in each of your videos. I'm hoping to teach myself Japanese someday
As a comic artist who will listen to video essays while drawing for hours on end, i would HAPPILY sit through a 12 hour Lucky Star video. Love your work, Hazel. :)
Hi Hazel! I was wondering why your video on Vlad Love suddenly disappeared? That was one of my favorite videos on your channel, and I can't seem to find it anymore.
I forgot that this was a video about Lucky Star and the manga magazine its being published in now when you started making the Omurice which unironically looks pretty good
I know it was only the intro to the video but, I can unironically sit here and listen to Hazel talk about tinned fruit snacks for hours lmfao. Keep up the great work Hazel.

i keep coming back, that outro song has brainrotted me ever since I watched this like a month and a half ago free me from this curse release the song or so help me ill wait patiently
The dopamine rush that Lucky Star's return sends me as someone who got into anime through lucky star uploads on youtube ten years ago is unreal.

Me: "I'd like to first state that many people claiming to be otaku are actually weebs.
@@Hauntaku What?
Man lucky star really sends me back. It sends me back to like that early 2010s internet and the really interesting time of the transition from small internet boards like 4chan, also less insane ones, to youtube, reddit, Twitter and the other big main social sites.
"To learn more, consult your local library!"
this is such a nice video, i don’t think i’ve felt so happy just watching a youtube video in so long. lucky star was my first ever anime and i still rewatch it bi-annually 10 years later. seeing another fan of it so happy and excited really made my entire week ! i also loved your cooking segment so much, it makes me want to cook omurice too !!
That is one Lucky Star. This is big news for Out of Touch Thursdays.
LUCKY STAR IS BACK?? LETS GOOOOOO
Okay I'm very hyped forvthat secret new song of yours at the end there, almost as much i am for the 12 hour lucky star video...
I D E M A N D the song starting at 31:03 be released. I'll do whatever you want
It’s Hazel’s own music! It’s on her bandcamp:
smiling broadly - patterns of behavior
Listening to you gush over things you love is always a joy and I will never tire of it. ♥
Also, if you incorporated more cooking into your videos, I would not be mad AT ALL. As I, too, love to cook, when the spark hits me.
ANOTHER NEW HAZEL VIDEO THIS QUICKLY? I’M CRYING
gotta say, i love how you bombard us with so many trivias and info i wouldnt even find otherwise. Good content ngl
Hazel video dropping = good day, and even with great news
I just wanna say I love watching your videos, I don’t know a lot about the things you talk about, but I love watching videos of people talk about their niche interests
nichijou is also back which is worth mentioning.
Hyacinth?!
Whoever did that scan is doing gods work. Also congrats on getting a good scanner!
Me: That outro music went kinda hard, I wonder what it is?
Song list: _31:03__ ???? - ????_
ikr? So annoying.
its so good to see someone talk about cooking and take price into account in the slightest
Knowing that Hazel loves cooking and process-focused manga I simply have to know if she’s read Ryoko Kui’s “Dungeon Meshi”
A true Christmas gift; hazel’s videos to sit with some hot chocolate and getting very comfy. So excited for the return of lucky star ❤
Hazel is back, baby. Edit, I got my tape. Wonderful album.
Also damn, the phrase "connective tissue" is used a lot in hazel's spoken content
Fun fact: It actually got a german dub recently.
I've never seen lucky star but I would watch a 12-hour hazel video about it
mangadex user here! will try to fix those issues with the series 😉
Pausing in the middle of video about Lucky Star to cut to a bit where you teach your audience a cute recipe is 100% Lucky Star vibes
Hi Hazel! I was wondering why your video on Vlad Love suddenly disappeared? That was one of my favorite videos on your channel, and I can't seem to find it anymore.
the groypers we're right to bring back the lucky star memes, they knew something
I forgot that this was a video about Lucky Star and the manga magazine its being published in now when you started making the Omurice which unironically looks pretty good
I love how this video is a variety of things besides it being a Lucky Star video and I love that.
i deadass rewatched lucky star two days ago,, what’s going on??
A hazel's 12 hours Lucky Star video would make me the happiest person on earth
my neurons are lighting up like a Christmas tree
Hazel once again killing it with the song choices. This video may as well have been a 30 minute ad for that final track.
“Look forward to it!”
YOU DROPPED A NEW TWINKLE PARK SONG AT THE END????????? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I think this is the closest to a slice of life "video essay" ive ever seen :3 i love it
I know it was only the intro to the video but, I can unironically sit here and listen to Hazel talk about tinned fruit snacks for hours lmfao. Keep up the great work Hazel.
hazel you could narrate anything and throw it in my slop bowl and i would devour it i s2g - ur cooking segment was SUCH a delight and so r u thank u for the lovely video!!!
I can't wait for Hazel to be the Cybershell of Lucky Star
I feel like I could listen to Hazel talk about anything for any amount of time
i keep coming back, that outro song has brainrotted me ever since I watched this like a month and a half ago
free me from this curse

new music just dropped, that song is on it.
It was well worth the wait god dammit
Hazel's videos literally only get better, how is it possible
