11:35 Curious how the App did not move the Goblin after that attack and slot the Mummy into place. As Zargon I most certainly would have. Seems the AI programming still needs work. Side Note: As a player, I would have stepped back after that failed attack on the Goblin to ensure the Mummy wouldn't have moved in on the scenario I just mentioned. :) Great video though - I thoroughly enjoy your playthroughs! :)
The app AI is not great, which I discussed in my video reviewing the app. It never moves enemies out of the way to let other enemies get through. Against a real opponent, you would continually attack and back off to prevent a musical chairs attack from Zargon, but I've used the app enough now to know that isn't necessary at the moment. Sometime in my playthroughs when Zargon does something particularly dopey, I ignore the move and manually move the monsters around, but it's easier to just let the app get on with it while I am focusing on video creation. But this is one of the reasons why, if they can't improve the AI, I would like the option to override the AI and make the moves on Zargon's behalf, as I would be much tougher on myself.
I’ve watched this video a couple of times want to see what happens next to the lone elf! Can he succeed or will he succumb to the horrors of the Dungeon? I love it! Thank you very entertaining!

So happy you got your copy everywhere has sold out, I'm hoping more comes in stock later. For now I'm playing good game of mind Dragon strike, gotta love that old VHS short film they made to go with it
They sold out the first print run of Frozen Horror too, but they restocked. Mage of the Mirror will be available again. I love Dragon Strike. But it hogs far too much space on my shelf with Dragon Lance and Legend of Zagor.
I love the old classics, but I haven't had much opportunity to play Dragon Strike or Dragon Lance recently. As they are both in my top 50 games of all time, I really I must dust them off again soon. No Discord at the moment, I'm afraid.
Since you rolled so well in defending in the first rooms, an interesting house rule (call it Counter Attack or Riposte) could be that if you completely negate an attack and roll an additional shield (i.e., rolling two Hero Shields on one Monster hit), you get a free immediate attack (essentially you'd get to attack twice on your turn). Also doesn't make sense that you have to roll or take damage while traveling via the trapdoor; now falling into pit trap that spits you out somewhere would make sense. Hypnotic Blaze should be called "Holy Fire of [enter suitably cool Elven name here]", since it's so effective against undead. I'm pretty sure that you would've found the exit door (iron/wood, I forgot which) in that sealed off/dead end section if you took the door from the empty chest/crypt room. Dungeons are weird like that but getting that armor is *really* useful. You also got nothing but love on all except one treasure draw, all those potions (remind me that I need to get more expansions). Just more HeroQuest goodness!
You leave this dungeon by the door you entered. There is no separate exit door. I did check out that corridor in the printed Quest book. Spoiler... There's nowt in it.
Great video. Interesting watching this, my app plays slightly differently. As an example, when you are defending through the door against the goblin and mummy in the second room, after attacking me the goblin will move out the way, allowing the mummy to then follow up with a second attack. So in my app the bad guys move then attack or attack then move (same as heros) to clear the way for other baddies to move in. Does yours do this at all?
@@idristhomas8856 They are constantly refining the app and this is an old video. They have added more options in the menu to give some monsters special abilities like split movement and diagonal attacks. It sounds like you may have those monster options switched on making the goblins more agile.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring yeah those little blighters are nipping around everywhere now ha ha. It has given me some good game play strategy for when I'm Morcar though
The one thing I noticed with the Mage of the Mirror it was missing dice which was included in The Frozen Horror. That was kind of a disappointment. But otherwise the furniture was a good addition.
I think it keeps the expansions similar in size - Frozen Horror had dice and a new character pad, while Mage of the Mirror got the furniture. While new dice are cool, if they put them in every expansion it would be a bit excessive, and would be jacking the price up unnecessarily. My assumption would be if a new expansion takes us to a place that doesn't require too many distinct set dressings, we'll get dice and a pad again.
To be fair, the vintage expansions didn't come with the extra dice, furniture, or quest pads, so they have actually thrown a lot of new stuff into both of the remake versions.
the next expansion will most probably have the "petrol-colored / fancy colored" dice. It's true that we'll end up with more than enough dice. Probably one set for each of the 4 players and one set for zargon, soon enough.
The solo missions are really supposed to be for a new elf starting from scratch, rather than one that has been through several expansions acquiring stuff, but the solo missions are tough so you could try it with a buffed hero and see how it goes.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring thank you looking forward to it I really enjoyed this play through wish I had kept my copy of this game! Instead of selling it at a yard sale! 😢
You chose the trap door but had no clue what to expect in the tunnel. Goblins needs to go back to defense training. The wolf bane potion is always nice and it scares me to get it. If anything, it may be a preview of what you could have faced. Wandering mummy wasn't expecting to run into you. I think in the base game anything that effects mind points like sleep the undead are immune to. I would suspect this rule to carry over to something like hypnotic gaze. I don't know why the app allowed it unless it had to go by the rule on the card or the lack of. I wonder how well a well experienced elf would do in this. I would say someone who went through the base set, Keller's Keep, and Return of the Witch Lord well experienced. That elf probably be a bit OP for the solo but at same time think you would need it for the second solo if memory serves.
The wording in the app was weird though - it said "you have fallen down a trapdoor," which isn't what happened. There is no blanket rule that says undead are immune to anything that uses or tests mind points. There is a specific rule on (for example) the Sleep spell that says it cannot be used on the undead, but there is no such restriction on Hypnotic Blaze, which paralyses the target. The new Deep Sleep elf spell wouldn't work on undead either, as it specifically states the enemy must have from one to three mind points. These solo quests are designed as fun intros for new players, or to allow an elf to level up quickly to reach a comparable level to characters who have been through the core game, so I don't think they are really balanced for an elf who has already been through a lot of adventures. They are very challenging, none-the-less.
You must be a wizard when it comes to shuffling the treasure cards. Three quests of Frozen Horror and this first one and no wandering monsters? On my group’s last hurrah in February we had like three monster cards back to back in the same quest!
I've been lucky there, but I do seem to pull a lot of hazard cards. Last time I played with my group, almost every search popped a monster. I think the only actual treasure we found was 25 gold coins!
I guess it depends on how it would work, whether it's technically mind control and such. The spell states targets are paralysed and I don't think skeletons or zombies are immune to paralysis in D&D.
Having invested in the Warhammer Quest line I won't buy the new HeroQuest as well but still love watching your videos. Regarding the app, it just rolls attack dice for the monsters and not defence dice? I also don't get the logic behind Mummies and Zombies being so tough. Thought you might have risked it at the end and opened that door! ;)
Thanks for watching. The app is very hands off, and it's designed to be as unobtrusive as possible in many ways. It moves the monsters and rolls the attack dice, but when it's a hero's turn you roll the defence dice for any monsters you hit. This means you only have to go back to the app to mark monsters that are dead (although you can track monster wounds in the app as well if you want to), which is actually something I like because I'm not really a fan of using apps. As for the toughness of mummies - HeroQuest is a sort of RPG-lite so I think it's probably take notes from RPG setting where undead enemies can be quite challenging, with all kinds of resistances to physical attacks. HeroQuest is quite simple, so that just gets reflected in the large pool of defence dice.
For what it's worth - I don't think you can actually use the elixir of life on a solo mission. It brings a *dead* hero back to life. Dead heros can't use items. Just my 2 cents.
The rules state you can use a potion when you hit zero hit points. I discussed this in depth in another video. It’s a strange rule. For reference, page 21 - "If a hero's body points reach 0, the hero is considered dead... As a hero, if your body points have been reduced to 0, there are two situations where you can save yourself: If you have in your possession any potion that can restore life to you... you can immediately drink it." So, it's totally fine to drink the Elixir. I don't think it would make a lot of sense for them to give you an artifact in the first of three solo missions that you couldn't use.
I agree with you on this a hero can use a healing potion or spell to restore lost body points when the hero is dying. The Elixir of Life clearly states it restores a dead hero back to life. Therefore a hero that is dying is not yet dead the Elixir of Life won't work according to the rules on the card.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring actually if the hero's body points are 0 they have a final chance to save themselves with a healing potion or spell to restore body points. That means they are not yet dead but are dying. A dead person can't save themselves because they are dead.
@@imalive4u169 This was my line of thinking *BUT* now that I have reread the exact wording of the passage, I have changed my mind. "any potion that can restore life to you" I'll say that it doesn't make a whole lot of logical sense but that is the way it's written and it's consistent with the healing potion rule.
Yeah, the rule is clear. When you hit zero hit points you are dead, but you have one chance to drink a potion that can save you. Elixir of Life would count. They really wouldn't give it to you in a solo quest if you couldn't use it, and it's a specific artifact written into the quest, not a random item pulled out of the treasure deck.
The way the board is used in HeroQuest is pretty ingenious really. Each adventure is only using certain sections of the board, and then through the use of overlays and furniture the shape and purpose of the used areas can be changed. Add in tunnels, the arrangement of the secret traps and doors, and missions where you get teleported all over the place, and many of the missions feel quite different, all while being contained within that fixed play area.
37 minutes of pure undiluted dungeon crawling fun
One of the great joys of HeroQuest is how it distills dungeon-crawling down to the essential experience - kick down doors, kill monsters, take their stuff, and use it to kill more monsters.

Oh, spoiler for that door....
There's nothing behind it.
As a hero, if your body points have been reduced to 0, there are two situations where you can save yourself: If you have in your possession any potion that can restore life to you... you can immediately drink it."
So, it's totally fine to drink the Elixir.
"any potion that can restore life to you"
I'll say that it doesn't make a whole lot of logical sense but that is the way it's written and it's consistent with the healing potion rule.
We need a Ethan and Ethel crossover
They would be unstoppable.
Goblin Slayer!
But not actually a reference to any manga or anime. These goblins are a bit nicer.
Awesome :)
Really wish I had kept my copy of this game! 😭😭
I don't know how u guys could play the same board over n over
The way the board is used in HeroQuest is pretty ingenious really.
It baffles me that those chess guys are always fighting over the same 8x8 featureless battlefield!
@@ColonelSandersLite Indeed, try putting down a flocked hill in the middle of that board.
