When I did my photo purge, I took every pic out of their books, shoeboxes, paper sleeves, frames, etc. If I had 12 of the same camping trip, I weeded it down to 3-4. The ones with people and maybe one of the site. Got rid of duplicates, blurred, thumbs, etc.. When I got to the basics, I scanned them, weeding them even further. My criteria was simple: If I smiled when I looked at it, I scanned it, if nothing, it went. I labeled the folders and tossed the pics. Anything super special, I framed and hung. It took a while, but now I feel master of my universe lol

I’ve really enjoyed your videos. Decluttering is a personal thing. Most of us can’t wait to accumulate stuff when we are young. Then at some time we want to shed that responsibility. I’m 78 and I’m having a few health issues. I realized it was time to shed what I could so my son doesn’t have to take it all on. I am currently in the process and your videos have helped me immensely. I’m now a subscriber of yours and cheering you on! My health and strength are being taxed therefore I do what I can every day. Sometimes a drawer and sometimes a whole closet-it depends! Thank you for exposing your feelings and process. It helps me! ❤️😊

I never saw you before and now I’m a subscriber. I love watching decluttering and organizing videos. I used to have snow village houses. I sold them all years ago when I really started decluttering and now I hardly put up anything for Christmas, just very few decorations. It doesn’t take much to make a house look Christmasy, a poinsettia plant, a red throw, a couple of red pillow covers. I have a little tree with my vintage ornaments and it looks very Christmasy without a bunch of stuff. I got to the point with my snow village that it was causing me anxiety because it was so much work, I’m a lot older than you so things are a lot of work. Suggestion on your organization of your village would be to take all the small accessory pieces and put them in a container. You’re gonna have to take them to wherever you set up your village anyway if it’s a different room. To carry all those little boxes you’re going too have to put them in some thing to carry them there anyway so you might as well store all the little accessories in a tote.

Love the decluttering and organizing videos. Love how you go show and talk about each item. Some people do time lapse videos which is useless. Wish we could have seen your decluttering from the start. Great job!

I don’t blame you for keeping the pottery barn chairs and rocker.
I never thought I’d have biological children and I had my daughter at 39!!!!
I really enjoy seeing her use some of my childhood things.
And I’m a minimalist and lost a lot in Katrina. So it isn’t a ton of things.
But once you let things go you can never get them back.
He might not be thinking about kids, and if he got rid of the stuff he probably wouldn’t realize he was missing out on anything if he didn’t get to share these with his kids. But it’s really cool when you get the chance to.

I would have loved those vintage aprons! I have purged several times in recent years and there have been a few regrets. Now I take a little bit longer to decide. Also, my kids were never interested in any of it until recently. As they approach middle age suddenly they are gravitating toward family heirlooms. It feels good to pass some of our families treasures on through the generations. So my point is, be thoughtful. Your son might marry and have children that would appreciate a thing or two passed down to them.

I like decluttering videos. I have decluttered my whole house the past couple years and still keep doing it a couple times a year and buying less now. It feels good to get rid of things. After loosing my only son, i had to go through so much of his stuff. I wanted to keep it all. I kept some and gave some to family and his friends. It was so hard.

Jamie, I felt it when you threw all of the cards in the trash. We had 11 kids in our family, and my mom saved every card she ever got. Hand made, store bought, from every one of us and my dad. And every report card from every kid, from every year. I said I would never do that. When I got a new card for a birthday, I would throw away the previous ones. THEN... my mom passed away 5 years when she was 92. I never liked tattoos, and swore I would never get one. But I want to get one now, and I could beat myself for not saving those cards that were from her. I want a tat with her handwriting where she signed the card, I love you so much, mom, to put on the inside of my wrist where my watch goes. I thought I kept that last card, but can’t find it anywhere. So when you put those cards in the trash, it brought me to tears.

This video actually made me sad. There are much better ways to save the Air Force photo, for example, than a quick scan in a video. There are always generational shifts and by the time we realize we want some tangible items from our parents, they might all be thrown away. I would have kept her son's Christening gown and at least one of her mom's aprons over all the excess Christmas items. If anything, it did remind me to be more mindful when doing my own decluttering.

I just found your channel. I am literally in my basement going through every single thing! ( we are having indoor waterproofing done, snd need a 5 ft clearance around all the outside walls. ). Just before I heard your video, I just repackaged some items I used at my last home, and have never looked at since. (21 yrs later). But I thought it was progress that I put them all together in a single container. As I heard you talking about going through things at your home, I thought ‘ what am I keeping all that stuff for’?? Our local thrift store has a night time building for after hours drop offs. It’s my favorite time to take stuff. I cannot wait until tomorrow, because you made me realize even more stuff should go! I may even have more empty totes when this is all over. Good luck to you AND to me!!

Jamie. There are NO RULES “. It’s your home, your life. Personally, I have absolutely no regrets for holding on to certain items, especially the ones in good shape. I have six grandchildren now between the ages of 20 and 7. Believe me that “One-day” will come Grandma 👵… lol and they have been passed on a couple of times; still a few are still in good shape… It would be wonderful to keep them in the family, and they each have their own story behind them. That’s when I think things are special as far as memorabilia.😊 also you are doing a great job. You go step-by-step and one item at a time.. it will all flow together. Remember your aim is to be authentic to who you really are.😊🙋‍♀️💕

Great video! We are slowly going through my grandparents things. They both grew up during the Great depression and they saved everything. In their storage building we found boxes full of bank statements and receipts of everything that they had ever bought. Their parents did the same thing and my grandparent's saved all of their stuff as well. I have been going through their pictures and I gave away a lot to my Aunts, Uncles, and my cousins, but I am still left with a lot of the older family photos and a lot of the duplicates. Hoping to eventually sort them some more and put them in Scrapbooks. Keep up the awesome work.

Hi Deb, your situation sounds just like what I'm working on. I've been in my home, in South Australia, for around 45 years, and when my husband died nearly 2 years ago I started the big declutter. I am moving into a retirement village with a place half the size, so an awful lot must go. I think my craft room will be the most difficult. Good luck, Christine 🐨🐨🐨🐨🐨

I am 76 and have walls full of totes with photos, birthday cards, schoolwork from my 3 children's lives, and previous 40-50 years ftom my Mum's trunk. I have 30+ photo albums of my daughter and 2 sons that I need to scan and split up 3 ways. They are not interested in helping nor do they particularly care about most of it. Even at that I still feel guilty getting rid of it. After watching your 2 shows on how to declutter I think I can do it and I'm going to give it a try starting early next week I'm gonna' pick a day to begin And mentally prepare myself to gird my guilty feelings and possibility of regret. I know in my heart of heart so it's I leave it for them they'll just come through with the bold oz or don't put into a goodwill trailer!

I love your honesty and your videos. What I find isn't mentioned enough with clutter videos is the feelings behind why we buy so much to begin with. I think it often comes from anxiety and stuffing our feelings. It's just another form of addiction, which is to avoid feelings. I so recognize that with myself with the buying of so much stuff through the years. I now face my feelings, no matter how painful, (especially forms of anxiety & grief) and only keep things I love. It's made a difference. 🙂

I have just found your channel. We are about the same age and I love your rock tees. sounds like you are learning a lot about yourself these days!
I don't know your situation but I'm watching you drag all that Christmas stuff out and talk about how much you love it. I wonder if it has occurred to you (if you have space) to just set it up all year. If you are empty nesters you may have a child's room available. Or a guest room. Would you enjoy it in your office space? Keep it out and mess with it all year and when Christmas rolls around you can set up little scenes around the house pulling from your collection.
Rod Stewart is dear to me. You may know he has a scale model railroad that he built himself over the years...its probably very similar to your village in many ways including the sprawl and the way it needs to be displayed. it takes up 2 floors of his home. Of course he has more room probably but the point is he enjoys it year round and he has prioritized it by incorporating it into his space.
In your situation you may be able to keep all those pieces out if you scale back another ways. Take a look at the more flexible spaces, see if you can scale them back to be less so there's room to add your village.

    • @lethiapage4767
      @lethiapage4767 2 місяці тому

If you don't want to do that.... Look at all hose green bins full of square boxes of similar size. You can shelve them outside the bins and save that strategy for the small stuff, the landscaping stuff. Set up shelves on wheels. Store the shelves one behind the other.
Ext cords that are only used with the village should stay with the village.

I think the whole world is going to come out from under consumerism.
I’ve downsized 3 times. The only thing I really enjoy is my garden and kitchen stuff. I don’t purchase anything without thoughtful consideration as to whether or not it will be used and enjoyed. Also if I bring something in, I get rid of something.
I took pictures of keepsakes and got rid of them.

What is the obsession with Christmas? Never understood that. Get rid of it at least most. Give the stuff away. Its insane to have that much for a holiday

WOW! The Christmas Village stuff you kept is CRAP! The photos and “ school days” stuff you trashed at least has historical value! Christmas Village garbage is Chinese mass produced as has no value because of its volume. When you come to your senses you will regret your choices. Decluttering is a good idea, but keep the memories not the junk!

I agree with you! When she finally sees this stuff is not really important, she will be much farther along on her journey. But no one can convince anyone else of what possessions should not bring them joy, so leave her alone about this. Let her have joy wherever she can find it.
Instead, celebrate with her the things she has let go. I suspect this Christmas Village stuff will go in the third or fourth round of decluttering. As you get down to fewer and fewer possessions, you start to look at each one more critically. She is only now just learning to flex her declutter muscles.
