Oh man. I'm coming to all these discussions late...but holy shit.
Whole-hearted agreement with Zach on most of that.
Additionally: Unless you're ending up with two different signals (not two signals with slightly different EQ shapes...they end up sounding really similar) going to two different destinations (speakers or DIs into a load box, etc.) you don't have "width." Audio width is a characteristic noticed by a listener when two sound signals have enough phase difference that we perceive them as two different sound sources. 40 chorus pedals stacked on top of each other followed by 10 of Rhett's favorite reverbs that give him "width" don't give any width if they're coming out of one speaker. Also, no real useful width if they're coming out of a 4x12 that's receiving one signal to the cabinet. Split one of those reverbs out to another amp and put something additional in either signal chain effecting the time/phase of that signal chain to create a a large enough difference between the 2nd speaker and the 1st speaker and NOW you have stereo.
Rhett's thinking about "Come As You Are" or "Ain't Talking 'Bout Love" when he's thinking about modulation; thick, syrupy, and practically a gimmick. A hint of modulation - like Zach mentions - is SUPER useful for creating a little texture and dimension allowing you to play a simple part that stills adds something to the song. Plus modulation is beautiful on a bass guitar (careful of the low end, kids). Further, why do synths have such a crazy capability to sound SO gigantic? It's not simply because they have resonant filters. Some detuning and the warble it creates (modulation) plus some phase manipulation (modulation) plus those things being effected in real time by control signals like LFOs or ADSR envelopes (modulation)...and you have soundscapes ranging from beautiful to cacophonous ALL stemming from modulation.
    My 4 specific pedals?
    1. Keeley Oxblood Germanium - Klon-inspired but not Klon-y to me. I could totally live with an SD-1 or a TS-9 here, too. I love 'em all. I don't need specific character - I'm not even the same character every day - I just need character and push and something to step up the sonic aggression.
    2. Danelectro Cool Cat Chorus - The big aqua-colored one not the little plastic one. I have this one from a million years ago. It's 18v and it's awesome. AND it's stereo if I wanted to do that (one of the two outputs gets no chorus meaning it creates enough phase and time difference that there's actually width if sent to a second output source and not just a layer of effectively the same sound).
    3. Boss GE-7 - Good as a clean boost. Good as a frequency boost/cut to move toward serving specific roles in songs or manipulating what your amp sees to change the amp's character. Good for help refining something in a tone if some decision before it has created some wonkiness. Love your amp? Learn to love an EQ pedal and you'll get SO MUCH MORE LOVE out of your amp.
    4. Quiet Theory Prelude Delay/Reverb. There are others that do this sort of thing but the Quiet Theory does them both really well.
Rant over. Love the pod/videos. I'm discovering that I need to try the Mythos stuff because Zach keeps speaking to the things I like with reasoning that makes sense to me while seemingly thinking about it differently. I can't wait to try a Mythos pedal with one with the clients in my studio!

A Tubescreamer with low gain and high volume is the sound of a LOT of metal albums from Kill 'em All to Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation. Acting like a TS is just this lame SRV blueslawyer dork pedal is a degree of tunnel vision I find a little baffling. Although I do prefer the Maxon OD9+ which is basically a tubescreamer where you can flip a switch that reduces the midboost.

I feel like if oversimplified Rhett & Zach have the same pedal choices.
    1. A drive stage that colours. So that you know tonally a pedal is on.
    2. A drive stage that adds. Just the amp but louder & more focused.
    3. Movement. Any type of modulation from one of numerous types of effects, set subtle.
    4. Space. Any sort of ambience that aids in enjoyment, more subdued when playing with/for others.
Then it's just a matter of personal preference to find what you need to achieve these essentials.
Mine would be a Fox Tone Machine style fuzz, a Klon-a-like (because they're better then tube screamers at being tube screamers), Dark modulated delay, plate type reverb. The Klon-a-like is at the end of the chain to post drive the wobbly effects into disgusting territory for added tonal versatility.

I think what Rhett is getting at with the Tube Screamer is that if you really love those sparkly/chimey trebles, the TS often saps some of that in a disappointing way. Lots of folks don't like those frequencies and don't miss it with the TS circuit.

My 5 favorite pedals, which isn’t quite the same as must have pedals (even though this does cover a lot of “must have” categories too) are
Source Audio’s overdrives (as all 3? 2? are the same),
    Hx Stomp XL,
    Source Audio Collider,
    Fender Pour Over Envelope Filter,
    Digitech Whammy DT Drop pedal.

  • @Wrylock
    @Wrylock 2 роки тому

    1. Klon(e). It's both a clean boost and an OD, both transparent and colored, and a buffer. So it's basically 5 pedals in one
    2. Tremolo with different modes including harmonic. Even if you don't like wobbly guitar you can always slip some subtle trem effect for some added depth to your sound, or you can get wacky stutter, phase-y harmonic tremolo, timed effects, again like 4-5 pedals in one.
    3. Delay with analog/tape/digital modes. Slapback to tape, to warble-y modulated effects. Again 100 pedals in one.
    4. Reverb again with all the different modes. One size does not fit all with verb. The right reverb will make or break your tone.
    5. If you would have gotten to a 5th I'd have picked a compressor. From sustain, to attack and subtle to squashed. Again something that will make or break your tone in a mix.

Zvex Fuzz Factory -> Sonuus Voluum -> Digitech Whammy DT -> Orion Effekte Kafka Reverb.
If a multi-effect unit is allowed, I'd replace the Kafka with the HX Stomp XL in a parallel loop for reverb and delay and extra modulation (Otherwise the Voluum is a fantastic tremolo that goes from soft analog tremolo through rhythmic tremolo patterns and all the way to ring modulation)

I gigged with a band the last Saturday night with my Fender Pro Jr. my Paisley DLX and a boss Rv 6. My rig kept up with a $2000 Fuchs 15 Watt. That's what he said it originally cost anyway. We were at a back yard party and using a small PA. So we were trying to keep it on the quieter side. I was really happy with that tiny rig.
My point is I've really switched to like 2 stage drives and on my acoustic board I've acquired Source Audio Collider and and a boss MD-200 so I can get a lot more effects out of one pedal.

Bought and moved on several fuzzes, tried to love them but the only one I kept was a Big Muff, and only really love the Big Muff if (wait for it) I stack a TS in front of it with the TS gain on low to slightly reign in the Muff. Zac's also 100% right about the original, he had just the right hate for the circuit to improve it like Jamie with the Plumes. But generally I have Rhett's taste in amps and the K's are way better than TS unless your TS gets some brightnin' up (like the Plumes)

My four pedals would be: two gain stages, some 'special' effect (modulation, filter, or pitch), and something spatial (delay, reverb, or a pedal with both)
I think the choice of what types of gain stages will vary wildly based on genre and rig - that could be a fuzz and an OD, a middy OD and flatter OD, a boost and a distortion, etc.
Then there's a special effect that you use sparingly in a set to take your base tone into another dimension - be that a phaser, chorus, univibe, tremolo, wah, octave pedal, or perhaps even more experimental stuff.
Spatial effect is pretty self-explanatory and up to the individual's taste/genre/rig.
My specific board would be a tonebender style fuzz that cleans up well, a klon style drive for solos, a magnatone style vibrato for modulation, and an analog delay for spatial stuff, all into my Carr Rambler set just past the edge of breakup with a little bit of spring reverb (tube bias tremolo also in the amp, footswitch right by the board).

Must have pedals for me -
Fuzz - Tone Bender family especially MK1/MK3

I agree with Zach. A Tubescreamer can be very versatile, especially in a mix. I run mine with the gain low volume at unity and tone above 2 o'clock, and it just sounds great and cuts well without being pokey. PAF-style and a Marshall'esque clean channel (Victory Super Kraken).

Where would you place something like the lpd 68 drive between the tube screamer and bluesbreaker circuit? I have all 3 but since I got the lpd rarely use the others. For my ears and amp I find the tube screamer too mid heavy but also find the bluesbreaker circuit to not have enough mids for my liking. I also find some overdrives too bass heavy and like how you can cut or add bass on the lpd. Why don’t more overdrives have a bass control to cut or add bass? I find it extremely useful for different guitars and playing at home by yourself with more bass or playing in a mix with less bass. Keep up the good content, I really like the episodes where you have opposing views and debate the merits of each. Thanks.

I’ve heard you guys argue about ts a lot and i feel like it’s crazy you guys have yet to mention (zach kind of did here) probably the most classic use, more so then the Stevie thing. Hard rock and metal players love ts’ to tighten up their amp. I love it cause I can turn my plexi into a jcm800, it does the jcm800 thing really well too.

As far as overdrives go, the Ibanez mostortion can be the best of both worlds. I can't recommend the Cascade Hosstortion highly enough. It's perfectly balanced in terms of distortion and compression (compression being a factor that AAAALLLWWAAYYYSSS gets neglected when discussing the topic of "transparent" overdrives) which makes it sound *and feel* transparent more than anything else I've tried. The fact that it has controls for lows, mids, and highs might be unfair. Just get one, though. And for people who are fuzz uninitiated, I feel like the Jordan Boss Tone is sort of a chameleon, but it's still exciting. I like the Bearfoot Gnarwahl quite a bit, but some day I'm going to make the best variant and call it the "green bomb." If you get both references, I love you. if you don't, i still love you.

If you’re trying to have the over drive act on the amp, why is it not the last pedal in the chain? Isn’t it quite likely that the pedals that follow are going to eat the extra gain?

Rhett, tsk tsk, you dared dunk on the King of Tone :-P. Kidding aside, I just got mine for Christmas last year and I love it and think it lives up to the hype more or less. I also love my Maxon OD-9. No false dichotomies necessary here, I can enjoy all the offerings from both pedals :-). I will say I generally agreed more with Zach on this though. Fuzz is cool but I think a tube screamer is more versatile. Never owned a separate reverb pedal, just whatever is in the amp, but I have two delays I love (Boss DD-5 and Maxon AD-999). I haven’t had a chorus pedal for some years but I should get one again. Anyway, thanks for the fun episode!
