Hi Chuck, you are absolutely adorable, but not to worry, I am 93 years young, but having taken up the brush,, again, after almost 30 years. Am finding it not as easy as it once was, I so enjoy watching you & have picked up many tips from you. You are sooooo good & fun to watch. You make it look so effortless. Thanks for allowing an audience to participate. Please, if you can, set up a cozy corner to paint in, I have to share my space with a computer, organ, sewing table, Entertainment center & often don't feel inspired to paint under these conditions. You're a pal.

Greetings from Australia, I love your relaxed easy going attitude, I've been painting for over 50 years, recently experimenting with fluid paints. My criteria for brushes is if it drops a hair into my painting it's bought a one way ticket to the rubbish bin. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, it's so appreciated and regardless of age or how long painting there is always something new to learn.

I love how he doesn’t force people to paint like him, he encourages people to find their own style by saying try different mediums and different thicknesses. Which makes people find their style whether that is more impressionist, realism, palette knife style or maybe even a combination. That is what the art world needs, with all respect to Chuck Black Art(I actually really like his style of painting I actually take some things from his style and work it into my own) but we don’t need thousands of painters like Chuck Black Art.

Ohhhhh this looks like MY LIFE. so much money invested in art supplies and tons of stuff I no longer use, some stuff I still do. It's crazy the amount of money that goes out the drain with ART Supplies. Ive been doing art since I was a child and I am 50yrs old. So imagine the money and EVEN more crazy when you start to get into REAL ARTIST Quality art supplies. Even student grade is expensive but wait till you start with Golden paints, High quality Oils and Canvanses and Coloured Pencils. Markers. It's all worth it but over time you figure it out. Now I work only with acrylics. Yes, you need to Experiment with A LOT of different mediums, they create different looks and styles, 6:25 like he says "you'll learn something" from anything you try out and you can add all these skills to your tool book of experience. BUT be WARNED, this takes years and years of learning, practice, mixing things, just discovering an art style and even learning what you want to use your talent for will take many many years of dead end jobs and schools and money down the drain in the grave yard of art supplies etc. I went to art school, never found a job in my ART field have worked in tons of jobs, never developed a career with art but Im a good artist and never give up. You can never give up. I do my art privately now but have NOW after 20 years doing this (im way before the year of the internet, instagram etc,) I have found a useful place for my art to grow and as a commercial artist that will actually EARN MONEY and I can develop my work and art style (and not just hide it all under the bed) I am applying these days my art, my talent and my grave yard of art supplies in the commercial art field of colouring books and surface design while still holding down my dead end job. BUT yes, it has taken many many years of tears, suffering and thousands of dollars later in supplies. I have been discouraged many times, but you know, fall down 8 times but you always get back up stronger. That is the way this story always plays out. It plays out like this in most artistic careers and no careers are straight and narrow. it's very rare that happens. Not impossible but very very rare. Good luck to you all. Most importantly do not loose heart. Just enjoy your life and do ART. Doesn't have to be for money or anything. If money comes because you want to live of your art great, if not, no problem, just continue your life, your art and Enjoy your lives.

I am so happy I found you on you tube, Chuck! I am a newbie, started painting last March after I took my Dad's paints and supplies home. He no longer used them and I was interested. I took off and haven't stopped painting, finally I am starting backwards and looking at you tubes to learn. I had to chuckle the other day while watching one of your you tubes and you started to talk about how you pronounce Dagger. I knew immediately, what you were getting at, "don't cha know"! I am from Minnesota but I live in Colorado now. I struggle with the how fast my paint dries. I often think if I were in MN this would not be as big of a problem. It is the number one issue I have. I waste so much paint because of the rapid drying out here.

I didn’t start overcoming my “I’m not good at art” feelings until 50. Almost 6 years later, I’ve played with a lot of different mediums (and still am). I’ll be really into trying a style than get into something else. I feel guilty investing $ then not using them much, but this video helped me reframe this as a learning opportunity instead!

Great vid. So glad to hear/see I'm not the only one doesn't get along with mediums for acrylics. You instruction and advice on fluid acrylics helped me to decide to switch. Also i can completely relate to the broken art at the end. I have been trying to teach myself acrylics over past year and averaging one success to every eight paintings ( birds have been the better ones). Thankful I'm not alone in the failures. Keep up the great work.

Yes you are so right that it is good to be curious and experiment - but it is also expensive so good to listen to experiences from other artists - especially of course to artist you like - i totally agree with your experiences with different Golden Acrylics. I definitely prefer heavy body and the fluids - but nice to Exchange experiences

Dude, the whole point of following you on these teaching videos, is to not only to learn how paint with this type medium, but get ahead of the learning curve. Every part of what you teach is a experiment for us and we learn every single time. The purpose of watching an experienced person is so you don't have stumble over the obstacles. In today's economy, learning this way, from Videos is the way to go before you invest money into supplies that you will end up put a side for what ever reason. I bet you wish, you had someone like you to learn from when you started out.

Thank you Chuck for sharing this I really feel it was a a learning experience for me. Maybe because I’m less experienced trying to figure out what to put on an empty canvas is daunting sometimes but then also once I have an idea it is time to figure out what paints which brushes do what and how well and you explaining it’s okay to trial and error because it is a growing experience made it feel like my next painting won’t feel so complicated! I really appreciated your tips and candor!!

Hi Chuck...this video really helped me learn a great deal about paints and textures. I never thought of using the canvas rolls to make my own surface. I am a new self taught artist and I also have begun using the Golden liquid acrylic blends. I love them. I also noticed that I use the same blue hues that you have been using as well. I also struggled a bit with finding the right brushes and learned now that there are cheap brushes out there as well as expensive that do the same job. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with artists like myself and happy painting.

enjoyed watching this i have tried many different paints over the years and ended up using system 3 well i did before i gave up painting, but you have whetted my appetite to start again. the one thing i found was just using water if you are not careful you can over water your paint and break down the polyma which then makes the paint lift and not stick down so i tend to use mediums to mix my colours as this adds polyma which strengthens the paint. brushes yes i am the same just use the cheap ones ive tried hand made and dont get any better results. thanks for sharing and keep on painting these wonderful pieces.

I've never tried oil over acrylic, but I'm going to!! I found a set of oil paints for a really cheap price (like $5) at a garage sale, thinking they were acrylic, so I never used them. I just found you and am so glad I did. Thank you for sharing. Could you demo how you cover your board with the canvas from start to finish.

Your suggestions on trying different media is great. If I had not tried pastels and later oils, I would not be loving the painting process as I am now. I had watercolours and acrylics, but I wasn't in love with them. I've also realised that I prefer pastel pencils to coloured pencils and watercolour pencils over watercolour paints. Next on my list of media to try are alcohol markers, water-soluble graphite, and conte crayons.

+Maria Rev awesome that's so great to hear! Glad that I can be of some help. I couldn't agree with you more, trying and testing is the only way that I learned what I love and that fuels my progress as an artist

Nice to see you use fairly affordable art supplies that are available where I live. I watch tutorials on youtube as I'm just starting off painting and they always stress buying the good quality stuff and the brands they use are pretty expensive where I live (because they're imported). I figure there's nothing wrong using the cheap stuff to start off with. I figure it's not what you have it's how you use it 🤭 Love your videos because they are very encouraging.

I like this video, I never took any art classes and am self taught, it gave me great idea's on some paints to try in the future. As far as the studio goes I have a room just for my art and have the same thing with brushes, I do not by expensive and I try different one until I find something that works for me. I love your work and have learned a lot thanks for sharing.

Great video. When I was teaching emergency medicine, I always told my students to know what your equipment and medication are capable of coming rather than what your protocols tell you do. The same applies to painting and everything in life. Just because a brush is labeled for oils doesn't mean you can't use it with acrylics. Like you said, try using new things. Keep notes on how they work and use it to your advantage and enjoy the adventure.

I love Dayler Rowney, Tilkon, excallent. I like a stiffer top and soft tip which I use lightly or heavily. I love filbert brushes and Dagger because you can get loads of effects with just these two. I use plastic pots with lids, brilliant if you have bits of paint you want to keep from your canvas, no waste then you can mix them up to make lovely colours in the pots. I keep chewing a gum pots with snap tops free from my husband brilliant for mixing paint and to keep the paint wet, when you want to make that cupped or take that lengthy phone call. Small gift jam pots brilliant to. I love the soft body paints too, Golden liquitex and Atilier. I use some heavy body Dayler though.
