Don't let the appearance and vibe of Splatoon confuse you, Splatoon is one of the "sweatiest" shooter games on the market right now, and it's literally the most popular competitive shooter in Japan (in fact it's one of the most popular game series in japan period right now). People get SERIOUS about this game, and while you can casually enjoy it, you can just as easily enjoy it as a hardcore player.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this, but a core theme in Splatoon 3 is Chaos, which they chose to interpret as a city with a MASSIVE melting pot of cultures in it all thriving together, which can be seen in their idols Deep Cut: The japanese styled Shiver, hindi Fry, and Brazilian coded Big Man. You can hear that influence in the 3Mix as it swaps between instruments and styles.

The Squid Sisters are actually cousins, Callie and Marie (like Calamari, aka squid.) They're the granddaughters of Cap'n Cuttlefish, the leader of the Great Turf War (the actual war between Inklings and Octolings.) They're very involved with the story modes of all 3 games, where they're agents (along with you the player) that help against whatever adversary each game has. Outside of the story, they're literally idols, so that's why you get big weeb energy lmao.
In real life, their voice actors are actual singers. Which is also the case for Splat2's Marina and Pearl (Off the Hook) and most likely with the trio in Splat3 (Deep Cut,) though their voice actors are not currently known.

Splatfest is awesome in game, the hub gets completely redecorated and it's set at nighttime, and they play the splatfest theme outdoor concert style. Meanwhile all the other player characters are dancing and jamming.
Splat3 has a lot of worldly influence, particularly stuff like the world cup, so a lot of the music has that Latin flare we've come to expect especially from Shakira's world cup themes.

  • @T_Man
    @T_Man Рік тому +399

Glad you enjoyed this stuff, so, here's some fun facts I guess. They actually get dedicated singers for the characters doing the signing. The idea is that the characters in universe make up a band, and make multiple songs. So they have dedicated Signers for the musicians and all the music made by that in universe band. You'll notice in the 3-mix they added the additional voices of 3 more characters, and those characters have another in universe band that has its own songs, one of then is currently on the list for you to react to actually.
Also, about the lyrics, they are just gibberish, the original recording is just the singers singing the gibberish. You can find accounts of the actors for the squid sisters reading the music they needed to sing and being really bemused. After the fact they add a bunch of post processing to it all to make it sound "squid like" as it were.
Just wait till some of the really weird music from splatoon comes around . . . In like 1.5 years probably, but still, just wait, it gets really wacky and fun.
Also , the first one is not the original at all, the second one is.

But the third is a remix made by Octavio, incorporating his theme and style. And it's co-performed by the villains of the 3rd campaign along with the Squid Sisters, making it a bit of a villain collab. It's quite amazing.

Splatoon quickly turned into 1 of Nintendo's most succesful franchises and is especially big in Japan. Splatoon 3 sold over 10 milion copies, with 6.5 million being sold in Japan alone. It would not be a stretch to say that it is Nintendo's Call of Duty for Japan. When it comes to the gameplay, it is actually a very interesting take on the 3rd person shooter genre. Your team wins by covering the floor with the ink of your team as much as possible, which always has a very bright and vibrant color. It also gives you a tactical advantage as you can fast travel through the ink by diving into it. You can also cover the walls but that does not add to the percentage you covered, but does offer a tactical advantage as you can reach higher ground easier and have a longer range for your shots to cover more ground with ink. So it is a game that does't rely on kill counts but taking out an opponent does help you win as they cannot cover the floor with their team's ink. Naturally it also has multiple other online modes for variety and a story based single player mode. Overal the franchise is a very fun and fresh take on the shooter genre

    • @Aidea._.
      @Aidea._. Рік тому

Rainmaker is my favorite online mode! It's basically reverse capture the flag, where there's an object in the middle that you have to bring to the opponent's base. While inking the ground doesn't earn you points in this mode, it's still a key part of the game because of the tactical advantage it gives you.

I really hope you get to listen to more Deep Cut songs (they're the trio that accompanies Callie and Marie in the 3mix). They're really cool because their group basically is themed around anarchy and chaos, and the way they sort of represent that is by mixing musical styles and creating some really great fusion pieces! For example, their most popular song is called Anarchy Rainbow and is a festival song that takes inspiration from Brazilian, Indian, and Japanese musical styles and mixes them together really well!

Hi! I just wanted to clear up some things for anyone who isn’t familiar with splatoon. Calamari county in the splatoon lore is where the Squid Sisters are from (also the Squid Sisters are cousins). The first song is a traditional Japanese (not Chinese) rendition, but in the lore it is the original Calamari Inkantation. The next one is a cover done by the Squid Sisters. The next one Spicy Calamari inkantation and it is a remix done by the Squid Sisters and DJ Octavio. And the final one, Calamari inkantation 3mix is done by the Squid Sisters, DJ Octavio and the newest idol group, Deep Cut. I hope this is helpful ^^ (If any of the info is wrong please comment so I can fix it 💕)

The large number of people listed for 3Mix is because in addition to the Squid Sisters who performed it in all three games, that version has two other groups involved - the first is DJ octavio, who was the villain in the first two games and appears as the first boss in the third because he and one of the "heroes" of the story mode (a semi-retired former army captain) are both accusing the other of actions that were in fact performed by a third party neither knew of that subsequently attacks both of them and drops everyone down a hole, and who then turns up at the end of the story to help stop said third party, while Deep Cut are the three who appeared in the live version of 3Mix - they had nothing to do with what was going on but have a side hustle of banditry they use to support struggling members of their community, and when they saw a new giant hole in their area they thought "treasure" and went into it, and they decided to start following the Squid Sisters around at the start of the end of the story after one of the Squid Sisters said "You can have the treasure. We're done with it.", and are joining in because why not?

One thing to note is that with the majority of the songs in the Splatoon series, the vocals are not sampled at all. They're sung by actual singers, with their voices put through a filter.
The only exception I can think of is SashiMori, where they do use cut up samples of human speech (unfiltered). The canon explanation for that one is that the in-game artist found recordings of long-extinct human voices and used them to make the two songs in the game. Yes, Splatoon is actually a post-apocalyptic shooter.

  • @coolyeh1017

What is so cool about the Splatoon soundtrack is that the musicians and composers take inspiration from all sorts of genres and cultures. They really do their research and then everything is performed live in a recording studio. Nintendo has published some videos with the voice actors singing and the band playing. The team also created in-game bands and have tidbits of lore (like bands disbanding and coming back, lead singer leaving or having a second job, etc.)
For example, in the 3MIX you hear influences from pop (particularly JPOP), synth, Latin influences (maybe Samba or Latin funk?), Indian, and 19th-century Japanese enka genre.
    JPOP from the Squid sisters
Latin Influences, or particularly Brazillian from Big Man
    Indian from Frye
    Enka music from Shiver
Synth/EDM from an Octopus named Octavio (who is the DJ). Octavio is the leader of the Octarians and their stages involve tons fo remixing and DJ-like style music in all three games.
You could argue the more traditional Japanese-sounding parts of the song are either a reference to the Squid Sister's past or to Shiver since enka music has influences from Japanese folk music.
What is even cooler that the team did their research is that the sea life they are based on is found in their respective areas. Manta Rays are found in Brazillian waters (I think he looks more like a Sting Ray just colored more like a Manta Ray but Sting Rays are also found in Brazillian waters), Callie and Marie are both based on squids found off the coasts of Japan, Frye is suspected to be a Vampire Squid (however not confirmed and there is some debate) which are found in the Indian Ocean, and Shiver is suspected to be a Blanket Octopus (also not confirmed), which are found Japanese waters, particularly the warmer southern parts.
The Squid Sisters (actually cousins) are also canonically from a rural area that is today's Japan hence the more traditional Japanese style in the first clip reviewed (which also shows you the dance moves). They evolved their style as they eventually became more famous and hit their idol status in a more modern city.

When it comes to lore, this song is incredibly important. It's an incredibly old folk song (the one you heard at the beginning, which existed storywise long before the Squid Sisters sang it) that has a lot of deep roots in the actions of the characters. Every rendition of it is kind of the bands paying their respects to the song.
Without spoiling too much, I guess, this song is what gives them hope, and brings them together and makes them strive for happiness.
edit: while I'm here still listening I'm not sure if others had mentioned it, but Splatoon has its own in game bands. Squid Sisters did the versions you heard up until 3, which then has the idols from Deep Cut. The reason that sounds so different is because, while Squid Sisters are more traditional Japanese sounding, the 3 members of Deep Cut have different cultural influences in their music and their songs are often a blend of Japanese, Indian, and Brazilian. It's pretty neat!

I love the fusion that 3MIX pulls together. Three music groups are represented:
    - obviously the Squid Sisters, who originally arranged the original Calamari Inkatantion from the theme of Calamari County
    - Deep Cut, a band of three, where one member draws heavy inspiration from Asian culture, and another has some deep Indian ties. For those who haven’t spent enough time listening to the funny squids to be able to tell their voices apart, the Squid Sister (Callie and Marie) are singing at the start, and Deep Cut takes over on the second time through the verse and chorus. (Though it’s different in the live version.)
    - and DJ Octavio, who after being the final boss of the previous two games and the first boss of Splatoon 3, joins forces with the player in the final fight, and is mostly represented in the electronic-sounding lines at the start of the track and in the half-time section.
    A few other small things:
    - Splatoon is definitely successful in the West, but in Nintendo’s home country of Japan, it is _massive._ If I remember right, there were around half a dozen of the live performances between the three games.
    - The reason the second live performance video was mentioning Animal crossing was because that was a combined concert. While there is much less of an emphasis on music in Animal Crossing, the series does have its own in-universe music star in the character K.K. Slider.

Here's a guide to the versions of Calamari Inkantation.
Chorus of calamari county is when the squid sisters were children performing for some kind of talent show.
Calamari Inkantation is the original song and it plays at the end of Splatoon 1.
Spicy Calamari Inkantation is the song that plays at the end of Splatoon 2, it's just a remix of the first one.
Caitlin Koi lyric version is literally just the song above this but with fan lyrics.
Calamari Inkantation 3mix is the song that plays at the end of Splatoon 3 has more than just the squid sisters this time it has DJ Octavio doing what DJs do while also having, Shiver adds some Japanese elements, Fry adds some Hindu elements, and Big Man adds some background vocals.
The other two are just live versions of other songs so I don't need to go over them.

1 focused more on the 90s urban and pop vibes
Since 2 they've gone HAM on the music and styles
Every genre you can think of they got it
Also every game has their idols
Calie and Marie, the Squid Sisters; they tend to be involved in the lore in all the games and Calamari Inkcatation is sort of their main theme
Some remixes add more songs or motifs from them and other game context stuff
    Splatoon 2 has Pearl and Marina, Off The Hook;
They got their own sort of Inkatation-like song called Eeb And Flow-Fly Octo Fly

context, splatoon 1 (the first two) and 2 (the third and fourth) has the squid sisters singing their song. its a very bombastic and energetic feel because its meant to be like a send off while you defeat the final boss (but the squid sisters also have their own songs. Bomb rush blush for callie and tide goes out for marie!)
Splatoon 3 however has the 3 new idols making their own spin along side with callie and marie. 3 is the last few and has much more in the mix that shows a bit of the cultural inspo for each character. (I think shiver is japanese, frye is indian or otherwise middle eastern and big man is... well, i cant actually pin point anything. my best guesses are some form of latino or brazillian/spanish)
Also fun fact, apparently like the animal crossing voices, they do actually speak a language. iirc its edited and HEAVILY mixed japanese, but they have their own alphabet and brands and everything

This isn’t meant as a dig at you at all, but it does put a real smile on my face seeing people realize just how much care and attention is put into Splatoon, and in turn how much care and attention it receives. I only really caught the tail end of TF2’s peak, but a lot of the heart and passion that was in there feels like it’s in Splatoon now; maybe even more, considering how big it is globally. People can just really get behind a cartoon shooter that’s doesn’t take itself too seriously!
I’m not sure if it’s been requested or if it’s already on your radar, but if you thought Calamari Inkantation was different from what you’ve heard from the series, I cannot wait for the day a track from Big Run (Splatoon’s horde mode) comes your way. It gets zany in there REAL quick.

Context on the song(s) you listened to - the three main versions of this - (Second, Third and Fifth videos you watched) are the final boss themes of the first, second and third game's story campaigns. And in each of those case it's sung in universe. And, yes, the live versions are holograms. Nintendo have done a bunch of V-Idol concerts with Splatoon. Vocals for them are prerecorded, one of the singer's has attended one of them as part of the crowd and found herself getting jealous of her character. The last video's Animal Crossing content was 30 minute medlay at the start of the concert. (I think City of Colour is the S1 in-game concert song)
The first one is the original in lore (...OK, quickly. Calamari Inkantation is in universe a traditional folk song from the region Callie and Marie come from. They then did a J-Pop cover of it when went from keeping on winning folk singing contests as kids to going professional. The song is said to be intwined into the DNA of inklings and octolings alike), the second is the 'main' version as it's heard in the first game in it's original context - Boss music for fighting an octopus DJ in a flying mech.
Spicy's in game context is that it's being sung by a mind controlled woman and her sniper sister having shot the mind control shades off of her sister to try and speed up the breaking of the mind control. While you're fighting the same octopus DJ who's now also doing live accompaniment to the singing because like hell is he letting them sing unaccompanied - The show may have gone off script but it's still a show goddamnit. Splatoon is weird.
And someone already explained the broad context of 3-mix. But left out the part where it's used to turn your tiny salmon sidekick into the kaiju salmon who's wrestling the bear in space while you shave it. Oh also you're on a 3:33 time limit before said bear turns Earth into a giant fuzzball. That's not a metaphor. In universe 3-mix is a collab between Deep Cut and the Squid Sisters... And that same aforementioned Octopus DJ.
"Is Splatoon a big deal" - It's probably the biggest New IP Nintendo has done since... Probably Animal Crossing and Smash which both had their origins on the N64. It's much larger in Japan, mind, but globally the third game sold a bit over 10m between September and December 2022.

These songs play during special in game events which is usually a two day weekend concert called Splatfests. However they all also play during the last phase of each game's final boss in story mode. The Splatfests play other songs too and in each game there's a different featured performing group with the Squid Sisters being the stars of the first game. The trio you saw in the last live performance is Deep Cut being the featured idols of Splatoon 3. Which each set of idols have their own unique style of music with 3Mix being a clash between the Sister's style and Deep Cut's.

One of the big things in Splatoon is the Power of Music, which is emphasized so much that the in-game famous musicians have saved their world on a few occasions.
Calamari Inkantation has been shown to actually boost characters' power, as it's diegetically performed during final boss battles.
There's a few really good videos about this (though I can't remember what they're called, probably something like "Importance of music in Splatoon")

As others have implied but not directly stared, the reason this melodu was so heavily requested is because it is hands down the most important song in the Splatoon Universe. Every splatoon OST exists in-universe, with their own bands and everything, and the Calamari Inkantation in particular is an ancient song in-universe with mystical, or even divine properties. It literally inscribes itself into the DNA of every inkling and octoling that hears it, can break people out of hypnotic trances, and even cause the spirits of all marine life to form together to power up a tiny salmonid into a kaiju.

You should totally listen to the different versions of Clickbait, from Splatoon 3! First the demo one (as in, that was the first time the in-universe band C-Side recorded the song), secondly the regular C-side version, then the Big Run lobby theme, and finally the W-3 version of Clickbait.
The first two are, as mentioned, "made" by C-Side: that's the mainstream band in Splatoon 3.
The last two, however, are "made" by the most underground band, W-3. They're a group of salmonids (creatures with a MUCH different culture than the regular inklings and octolings). Their songs feature distorted cello samples and strange time signatures: a good example of that is Chaos Carnival, a song that plays during the extremely unforgiving and chaotic Salmon Run mode and lasts exactly the length of a wave of enemies.
The Big Run events, where salmonids invade the main cities, have quite an apocalyptic atmosphere.

As a background as to why Splatoon 3’s music is so crazy, is because in real life based off of evolution theory, squids and octopus evolve very rapidly. So basically, humans went extinct from nuclear heat death and somehow, all marine animals survived. Over time, the animals started to evolve and ended up looking a lot like humans. Throughout the course of the three games, the cultures within these different species started getting so diverse and almost inhuman, and the music followed along with it. Splatoon 3 is the most experimental vgm soundtrack I’ve ever listened to in my life, and I absolutely recommend it.

Deep cut (the group in 3mix) mixes traditional Japanese, Indian, and Brazilian together and sounds super festive. There's also dedf1sh, who's music is mostly down tempo house. Off the Hook is a more western style pop duo with some rapping. You also have The Bottom Feeders, which is a celtic rock band. There's Chirpy Chips which is chiptune rock. Quirky? you have no idea. There are some weird songs like alterna mission 8 (bang bing) where its like a weird acapella beatbox melody two octives lower than it has any right to be, chaos carvinal (which is on the list) that repeats notes over and over with varying tempo and stuttering, #$@%^ Dudes Be #$@%^ Sleepin which is garbled squid talk over metal, or tentacular circus which is literally 90% sampled sound effects and 10% banjo.
Most are absolutely gonna be jpop, rock, ska, or electronica influenced, the coop mode is all fiddles, but they can get weird with it

Splatoon takes place about 10,000 years after humanity wiped itself out due to having FIVE world wars. All mammals went extinct except for a single cat named Judd who has special powers, and was cryogenically frozen and given an immortality syrum, and now he just vibes with all the fish people. Society in Splatoon is full of all types of hyper advanced species of sea life that made its way onto land, but everything mostly revolves around Inklings and Octolings, aka Squids and Octopods. The youths of Splatoon are obsessed with punk culture and playing sports involving weapons that shoot the ink Inklings and Octolings produce in their bodies. The game is mainly multiplayer but there's also 1 or 2 singleplayer modes that MASSIVELY flesh out the world with compelling stories and cool lore. It's pretty neat I love Splatoon :)

  • @zenehac

Very quick explanation of splatoon lore that probably doesnt give spoilers!
Extinction of humanity, Great turf war between Inklings and Octarians, Octarians lost so they are on underground domes I think it was called? (English is not my first language btw!) that humans used to try to survive as there was war before the extinction, now basically, inklings and octolings hate each other before the events of splatoon 3 or even less, so they are racist to each other most likely.
The Calamari Inkantantion was a song that was played in splatoon 1, being the first version of it, splatoon 2, being the spicy version, and splatoon 3 being the 3MIX, Both on splatoon 1 and 2 was placed on octarian territory, also played at the final bosses. The song hit so hard that it etched into the octarian's souls and made them seem both sides, both of the inklings and octarians, and well, some managed to escape, and now are integrated into society.
Btw, none of them are really bad guys, as in the end they just want to survive.

I’m sure someone has mentioned it before but with every new iteration of the song in the games - I think even for the concerts - the vocals are re-recorded. Since this was your first time listening I could see how it all just sounds like the same voice samples. But the song has grown with the characters for the past 8 years! It’s both an important song within the lore of the game, and to us Splatoon fans!
It was really cool to watch someone’s first experience listening to all the iterations of Calamari Inkantation. Yknow, I've memorized the official lyrics to the Calamari Inkantation, (the gibberish ones, not Kaitlin Koi's unofficial ones) but only to the original. The 3MIX one, i don't have the heart to, because of the human vocals in the back (yes, its implied that they're human vocals echoing from Alterna, even though we're 12k years extinct by now.) It's their song, their cultures, now, and i know my place in 3MIX. It's supporting them from the back as a final farewell.
Oh, and btw a lot of people end up curious about this and I have the answer, so the promo character's names on the video at 16:37 are Veronika (the yellow-toned one) Hiro (violet) and AnemoneNo1 (pink). The names in S3 are closer to usernames as it's apparently been canonized that they use nicknames in battle now, I just omitted the capitalisations and extra letters in the first two kid's names. They come up pretty frequently along with another six characters who form the game's promo group of eight (two teams of four.) they've actually got a lot of personality if you look into it, and the manga has its own slightly different versions of them too. Although due to their position in the manga's storyline it does portray a solid percentage of them as a little meaner than they are in the games and generally just kind of jerks, especially Anemone, who's named 8-Bit there. One of them gets a redemption arc (sort of) but not the others.
