"That heavenly melody" is only what it's referred to in English. The original Japanese refers to the Inkantation like a mantra:
"To hear it is heaven, to sing it is paradise"
The second verse is such a huge hype moment for me because I was expecting it to loop but then all the sudden you hear this entirely new verse with Deep Cut singing. That moment tied together with the visual of Mr. Grizz and Huge Fry battling it out while you ride Octavio’s ship it’s just so exciting
And it feels so “battle in space” imo for some reason

IKR I DIDN'T EXPECT THE "OW" FROM FRYE AND THE "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" FROM SHIVER IT WAS SO GOOD
When I heard that moment I got a fucking adrenaline rush and got scared at the same time.
Fun fact: this version is combining all of Deep Cut's individual motifs and styles from their own songs PLUS DJ Octavio's syth in the background ON TOP OF the original song.
Now if only Off the Hook could've been a part of it

For anyone wondering just how many versions of Calamari Inkantation there are, there are _ in total:
- The final boss of Splatoon 1
- The final boss of Splatoon 2 (this version is known as “Spicy Calamari Inkantation”)
- The secret hidden boss of the Splatoon 2 DLC campaign
(This one has very few changes from the Splatoon 2 version, but is a different version of the song)
- The final boss of Splatoon 3 (known as Calamri Inkantation 3-MIX)
- A special version from the live concerts the Squid Sisters performed in Japan
- A “traditional” version, only available as a bonus track in “Splatune”, the official album for Splatoon 1’s music.
For those who didn’t know, the Squid Sisters didn’t actually write the Inkantation- the original melody was actually a theme song of sorts for a town/city/etc. called Calamari County. The Squid Sisters added their own lyrics and remixes it, and now the sound of the song has broken mass mind control multiple times. (Splatoon lore is crazy. And yes, there are official lyrics to almost all of the idols’ songs. But they aren’t actual words-it’s essentially gibberish written in Japanese.)
Small edit: The secret boss fight of the Splat 2 DLC uses the version of Calamari Inkantation from Splatoon 1 with more reverb, not Splatoon 2. Great list though!
And if you leave him alone long enough, Smallfry would sing the Calamari Inkantation to himself
Starting the song with kick drums is a tradition since the live version: original composers like it so much that they started using it in Spicy CI.
additional note, the inkantation is part of all marine life's DNA. it's quite literally built into them, and the mind control part is only because it causes octolings to see something that isn't propaganda. it's not magical or anything, it's just a song that helps people individualize and realize what they stand for, which ties into splatoons themes of humanity (cause that's what we do!). not to mention the whole "it's all human memories distilled into one song thing" cause that's a whole other can of worms, but it is more than just magically significant.
Don't forget the jingle of the train arriving in the Splatoon 1 main map. Everyone'a favorite version.

What makes me smile is that he looks genuinely taken aback by Big Man joining in . Although I it is surprising to suddenly hear a lower pitch voice in this quartete of high pitch voices
The composer and musicians had to communicate the absurd concept of “all of Earth’s marine life sending you their good vibes” in a song, and they NAILED it. The melody of the backing choir feels epic, yet so positive and encouraging!

Fun fact: Excluding the intro to the song, the reason the Calamari Inkantation is so long this time around is because it has to fit exactly 3 minutes and 33 seconds. (The original is only around 2 minutes, I believe.)

There's been a bit of a theory going on in the comments of 3MIX uploads as well as Wave Goodbye that the ungargled chanting/choir is actually humanity's spirit lending they're power too the song, and an even deeper theory is that the Inkantion is actually an ancient human song that was literally "written into sea creatures DNA" considering the last few Alterna logs. The lore of this song is INSANE
makes sense, the inklings are basically the humans of the post apocalypse since the look so much like human. they made their own language and letters like we did and have the same stuff. and humans know that we cannot go back to the past, we need to evolve and continue to the future. so, I think the souls of humans cheering inklings on or lending their power makes sense since, inklings and octolings are humanities dependents and we help the next generation since they're our future.

The song's pentatonic scale is explained by lore: the song has its origin in a traditional Japanese-style folk song (a recording of it is found in the OST for the first game).
the tresillo is kind of a staple of latin american music so Big Man is probably part of the reason its there lol

I love that Octavio is canonically mixing music together while he fights. Which he is probably also doing for the 3Mix of Calamari Inkantation. Since you're flying in his ship/mix table
Shiver belting out in the later half of the song is honestly what makes half of this so enjoyable for me, usually I think loud adlibs like that can be annoying but Shiver did it justice
A fun tidbit about the chorus in the 3Mix is that its melody is taken directly from Big Man’s Anarchy Rainbow Solo, just further selling how collaborative of an effort this is in-universe
Also, i think it’d be interesting to analyze the spicy calamari inkantation from Splat 2 as that is what the 3 Mix’s opening seems to build off
Saying "That's a long intro!" when you're only 25% through the intro
Yeah, I haven't really listened to it outside of when I was playing the hero mode myself, so I was quite surprised that the intro is so long, and that the tune doesn't necessarily loop either given how long it is.
@@ChristophJakob It helps that the song plays in a section with a strict time limit so they could compose for the entire duration without worrying about needing loop it back.
I understand the tense part, because well, you’re literally on a timer to save the world.
You know, the 3mix probaly goes on for as long as it does becuase this fight (unlike the ones in Sploons 1 and 2, is timed). This phase will ALWAYS be exactly 3 mins, 33 seconds long at most. The track probably wasn't designed to loop at all.
3mix is my favorite so far. It's combining Squid Sisters, Deep Cut, and DJ Octavio (pretty much the main idols that don't have their own cover of Calamari Inkantation now is Off the Hook). It's so fun listening to the song put together with Deep Cut's instruments and style and Octavio's electronic mixing. Another thing that helps with Deep Cut's music is that the actress that does Shiver's vocals is a Japanese folk singer.

@@insertnamehere1398 speaking of which, I hope someone makes a UA-cam film series that is based off the actual 4 story modes (with more to come with the DLC + future games). I was originally going to do it before I noticed that I had 0 degrees, skills, or experience in animation and am stuck to simple fanfics. But I hope someone does it one day
The reason that this music does not loop is because it has to fill a preset amount of time for the fight. If you do not finish the boss within this time period then you fail. It borrows from the concept of the final boss from the DLC of Splatoon 2, which also used a special song exactly the length of the fight.
Deep Cut did a concert recently, ang it gave us full versions of songs like Clickbait, Hide and Sleek(or Raid under storm and stress, as it was known before this), and, of course, Calamari Inkantation 3MIX! Would love to see you break down these extended cuts!(though, Anarchy Rainbow's isn't anything special. After the track ends it's just a medley of Deep Cut's solos before transitioning back into the chorus).
My absolute favorite part of the song is when Little Buddy joins in. He slayed in his part, singing his little salmon heart WHILE fighting a giant kaiju goop bear in space.
Next time Deep Cut has a concert where they do the Inkantation, Little Buddy better be featured there.
it's kind of tough to tell, but that's actually big man! you can compare that part of the song to smallfry's voice clips :] plus, i don't think little buddy would be able to sing too well while trying to maul a giant space bear lmao

fun fact that most don't realize is that the song has different lyrics in verse one and brings back the original lyrics in a later verse
It's actually crazy how much emotion can be packed into a song with no actual "lyrics". To me, Calamari Incantation (all versions but 3MIX really highlights it with shivers singing) is a desperate plea and call to action like "PLEASE, YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO ME OR WE'RE GONNA DIE" makes me tear up every time I listen to it, as do several other Splatoon songs 🥴
i love the instrumentation of this track because you can hear the combination of Big Mans productions style with DJ Octavios style in there too and it just feels like all of the marine life has come together for this climatic battle and it just so perfect
This piece is so deeply set in my mind I guess that's what happens when a song keeps constantly showing up over seven years
As a brazilian i love when my culture is referenced, the instruments that big man brings to the song give a lot of Carnaval vibes.

Onto more pertinent information: Calimari Inkantation is canonically an ancient melody, with the song "Chorus of Calimari County" providing a traditional Japanese rendition of the piece.
Its literally an ancient heavenly melody.
My favorite part is the clear Brazilian musical influences pulled in for Deep Cut. At times it feels like you're at Festivale.

This has to be one of my favorite rendition of the Inkantation. (I say “one of” because the Splatoon fan music community is absolutely insane-I’ve lost hours just by typing “Splatoon remix” into SoundCloud and just letting it play through all the amazing things people have done with the Splatoon OST. I never knew the Inkatantion mixed so well with Bad Apple….) I love the use of all three groups’ (Deep Cut, Swuid Sisters, and Octavio) themes and styles. Something about that one solo Shiver has just _hits_. And yes, I have spent so much time listening to Splatoon music that I can identify individual characters. I also have well over a thousand hours in the series. Sue me.

This version will hold a special place in my heart. I have, so far, completed the S1, S2, and S3 story campaigns, OE, and SO, including the secret/final-final levels. Right now 3mix does not hold the nostalgia like the original nor spicy but they went off with it, and I love how busy it is while also working with it. The S3 end credits made me cry, just the drama and the release of it in the end was something else.
That choir has the same leitmotif as Big Man's solo during Splatfests

(Considering the goggles for Octarians are simply to enhance sight and sensors my headcanon is that It sets them free from their constant loyalty and gives them innersight).

My favorite part of the Inkantation is that it's actually traditional Japanese Enka music.
If you focus solely on the melody line, this is more obvious, but all the Squid Sisters have done is take a traditional Inkling song, and given it an EDM twist.
This is a really interesting breakdown! Personally I'm a fan of that "lame" spanish type rythm in this song, and also especially how it's used in Anarchy Rainbow. It helps set Deep Cut apart in the universe and gives them a really nice vibe :)
Yeah, that's totally fair! There's nothing wrong with that kind of rhythm either, like at all. For me it sadly always tends to remind me of music that I just can't stand which ruined it a little for me haha.

Hm, I don't see any coverage of *the* Calamari Inktation, the heavenly melody in the hidden scroll isn't exactly the song The Squid Sisters sings, and it's actually a folk song from Calamari County, and it should be somewhere on UA-cam, and I think it's more in line with the scroll version of the scroll

Why is it necessary for you to have footage when you are listening to the in-game OST? (I noticed when you didn't play the lobby terminal theme in your Clickbait analysis). I would assume it has something to do with copyright laws by Nintendo or something. I love your analysis videos by the way!
It's technically not necessary I guess, but I do like to add some after I've recorded both my reaction and the analysis.
Calling the staple of Latin rhythm “lame” is a little harsh don’t you think?
That's solely personal preference though, mainly because where I live you only hear this kind of rhythm in soulless pop music, which is truly a shame.
