- In this video, I test the Sony FE 50mm 1.8 Video Autofocus Performance to see if this budget 50mm lens is any good for video projects or not. I should mention that I've updated my Sony FE 50mm F/1.8 lens to the latest firmware which is .03 for this lens. The Camera which I used for this test was the Sony A7III which again is on the newest firmware 4.0.

as a general unwritten rule, all 50mm f1.8 are awesome. have fast AF and moderately sharp and Sony FE 50mm 1.8 fits in the reputation too. awesome content man. I hope one day old DSLRs like my camera (6D MII) receive an update to support eye tracing....
Yeah most nifty fifties have good autofocus but the Sony Fe 50mm had a bad autofocus performance when it was released! but with the latest firmware which sony released for this lens, The Autofocus performance changed drastically and became very good! You missed out on another thing. its the cheapest full frame lens for many brands
Have this lens as well, it's great, but a bit noisy (mechanical focus noise) and a little slow at times, but for the price?! It's an absolute steal for how sharp the photos turn up!
Yeah I totally agree with you! it's a bit noisy but the sharpness of it is really good and somehow close to the Zeiss 55mm 1.8! It's really awesome for the price! 😅 Thanks for watching!

Thank you for the video! I've heard the autofocus is quite loud(noise) on this lens. Is that true? I'm going to use it in a recording studio where the sensetive microphones are always on:)
My pleasure! Yes the Motor noise is present , but if your microphones are far from the camera you won't hear it.
I know this video is old but it’s hard to hear the audio test because of how loud your environment is. I’m finding that besides the loud shift when focus changes dramatically, it also sort of has a constant soft clicking if I’m doing just a talking head video, as if it’s making micro adjustments but still pretty noticeable on the footage within a quiet room. have you experienced this?

Thanks so much! really well done.. Is it normal that on my A7sii it doesn't lock the focus like yours? it ALWAYS goes back and forth to find it. I'm in af-c and the slight movement makes it "breathe", can phase detection AF make this big difference? would I benefit e.g. a sony 24-70 g master or it is better to switch the body like to a A7III and keep the 50mm for now?

Yes, sold the a7sII and got an a7IV, the 50mm is fine on the newer camera that has a completely different AF tech@@slashedbeauty

Yes this lens is noisy and it's natural! It works fine and there is nothing wrong with it!

this angle seems awfully wide for the 50mm. I think I am doing something wrong because my video and images were heavily cropped. Any tips?
I didn't get what you mean by awfully wide , the intro of the video is with 24mm lens and then I switched to 50mm for the test
Bro , i test it with a6000, but if you shoot a video with af-s or af-c , you hear always "annoying noise", it disappears only when you press a button to focus manually, or when using MF, is that normal with this lens?
Yes this lens doesn't have a silent focusing and you will hear a slight noise whenever it's changing the focus

we don't know the exact release date for the Sony A7 IV yet ! If you are not in a hurry, you can wait for the new Sony A7 IV , but If you want a camera now, Sony A7 III is still one the best cameras in the market in that price and you will get a lot of good features! A lot of Professional Photographers and Filmmakers are still using the Sony A7III for their projects and the results are awesome! As you said that you are a musician , I think that It would completely fulfill your needs! but again if you aren't in a hurry ,You can wait more! Thanks for your comment.
I have an A7 III too and I wish I'd have the autofocus capabilities of the newer Sony cameras. The A7C does have it and would recommend it instead, makes a world of difference + it has software stabilization.
I have a 50mm 1.8 lens for my sony a7c. It makes alot of noise when changing focus. Do you notice this with your lens?
It's natural with this lens! It makes a little bit of noise unfortunately!

Hi dude, unfortunately I haven't heard anything about this problem! Maybe the contact points of the lens are dirty and can't communicate with the camera!

Yeah As far as I know this is an old update, you check the sony website for exact release date
You shoot the same video with the 85mm lens so that we know how focused 85mm is.

Hello, No it's not dude , You need a wider lens like 24mm, 20mm or even 16mm for vlogging! If you use an APS-C camera, then I would recommend you to get a 16mm lens, but for full frame cameras, 20mm and 24mm would be ok too! Good luck
