what i got away from O.O is that theres two different worlds: The "dark world" (an apocalyptic type dimension where theyre fierce like lioness) and the "light world" (as described in the new frontier teaser to be a world where everything we wish for comes true)
We're shown these two concepts separately in the mv but by the end theyre mixed as we see the sign "pick n mixx" lose its "pick" so now we're left with "NMIXX" - the joining of the two worlds, the two concepts, to bring us something new and fresh. The new frontier describes this mixed world AS reality "where hope exists with pain".
O.O represents opened eyes, telling us here and in the lyrics to open our eyes to see this reality where dark and light are mixed. They are saying that a world like the one in the middle section isnt realistic at all and that happiness needs to exist with anguish. The ultimate purpose of their debut is to essentially get us to open our minds to the possibilities of concepts and genres etc.
The two eyes also represent the two different worlds, as we see Jiwoo at the end looking at one O flickering and the other O bright, with the word "N MIXX" under, to reiterate that the worlds become mixed when we open our eyes to face reality.
also notice the wardrobe change:
the beginning they have girl crush clothing, middle section a more brighter style, then at the end they wear plain black but with bright and quirky pendants everywhere to show the mix between the two
so in a way their debut was more like a prologue for whats to come ( like BAE says in verse one, "this is just a teaser" and "coming soon")
ik that people will automatically pass them off as a weird experimental group, judging by what O.O sounds like (and ye i can agree that its rlly abrupt and messy) but like i said its only to set up for their future comebacks, so i highly doubt all their music will be hopping in and out of the worlds, itll be a fresh mix, a new genre, the NMIXX genre
Their purpose is to show us a more progressive world where everyone is able to exist both with happiness AND hardship

i think on my first listen of o.o i was more surprised by the fact that jyp released a sound like that than the actual song, but it ended up growing on me really quickly nonetheless! tho i was too scared to say i liked it, bc this is genuinely the first reaction i’ve seen where someone enjoyed the song; everyone else i’ve seen, whether it be reactors on youtube or the general reaction of fans on social media, have all said it’s a complete mess. so, thank you for giving me a space to share my opinion! safe cave indeed :]

Definitely an interesting debut, that's for sure. I'm a bit mixed on O.O. I really like the middle part of the song when it switches up, but I dont know about the rest of it. I'm going to need to listen to it a lot more to really figure out how I feel about it. I think I definitely like Tank better and I think it probably should be the title track imo. I'm a bit let down since between NiziU, Itzy, and Twice, I love JYP girl groups so I was really looking forward to this and it isnt something I really love, but that's okay. They are going for a very different sound and it may take them a bit to figure things out, but I do see potential there and the girls are definitely talented, so I'm still excited for their future.
I'm in a very small minority who not only loves both these songs ("O.O" edges out "Tank" for me), but also likes them more than the other popular experimental GG releases in recent memory (e.g. Billlie's "Ring x Ring" or Aespa's "Savage"). The fast tempo in "O.O" really works in its favor and complements the frenetic, chaotic feel of the song very well.
Like you, I'm also very curious about what their normal sound is going to be like in the future. I don't know if you ever listened to late 90s/early 00s alt rock and nu-metal, but "Tank" has a vibe that reminds me of a few Limp Bizkit and System of a Down songs, lol.
Yea, I have to agree. When I first heard the song I was caught of guard by the switch up but thats literally the purpose of it and they tied it together really nice in the end. There are other songs in the industry that do something similar and people enjoy those, so I don’t understand the hate this debut song gets but well…
Also I found it fascinating that I’m a big fan of rock too so maybe its just an distinguished taste in music☺️
People massively hate it on Twitter. The problem with kpop stan, they only think competition. Will my fave comeback surpass this or that group ? Will this debut be better than this group debut ? They put their expectations on another dimensions and are always disappointed even when there’s something good in front of them. Not mentioning how JYP groups are always trash talked about, but when it’s they do something amazing everyone weirdly loves them ??aka itzy

I feel like I'm your opposite here, where I'm more like "One of these days there's going to be one of the experimental songs that I actually DO like, and today is not that day" haha. Maybe I'm an old man yelling at clouds (probably am), but I just haven't been able to get on board with the phenomenon of violent mood and tone and tempo switches. The initial surprise of them is quickly replaced for me by asking how I'm supposed to enjoy listening to it again. The thing is, these are clearly incredibly talented members, so I'll check out things in the future for that reason (there are definitely other groups in that same camp). I respect that everybody has their separate tastes and that's great, it's why there's a wide range of music for everybody, but these songs are just a hard pass for me.
This is the trend... I will hopelessly find myself lost trying to grasp what the heck I'm listening to. I hope It's not that I'm getting too old to appreciate the start of the phenomenon that might engulf the k-pop trend still to come. If SM and JYP start doing this shit, soon everyone else might start doing it. If one doesn't like one flavor, why not throw in a few more? like mint-chocolate with strawberry ice-cream? Maybe it will become everyone's most popular taste, or it might be that everyone will pretend to like this trend so as not to look old-school to others, while in fact everyone is hopelessly lost but pretending to understand what's happening.

Yeayy!! Finally a reactor who likes O.O. i don't know what are people out there talking about, this song is amazing! And i liked it the first time i heard it, afew days ago Maybe because i'm used to SM experimental songs. Now i'm down the rabbit hole, stanning Nmixx and learning the members names.
It was really experimental and personaly prefer Tank than O.O but the choreo is really cool.
I’m still kind of torn on the debut. I’m pretty pro experimental songs, but I’m not fully sold yet. It’ll probably have to wait a bit for me to listen to it more and make up my mind, coz I can’t tear myself away from StayC’s EP anyway.

Back here after giving more more listens to o.o and I just wanna say I'm already so obsessed-
O.O is truly the first and only time I’ve ever listened to any song, kpop or not, and said “wow, that was… awful.” Im not very critical of songs and I’d say that I’m easy to please but this… this feels like a shamble of potential ideas that could’ve come together into a great musical arrangement but instead just stayed as shambles.
I listened to O.O twice with just the audio and once with the video and my feelings are the same. It’s bad. The music video is gorgeous but it’s such a shame that these girls have worked so hard to debut for something so overwhelming and at the same time underwhelming as this.

I wasn't sure if I liked it whilst watching the MV for the first time, there's just so much going on I kinda got lost in the visuals and didn't properly hear the song itself until I listened to it on it's own and then I had the same reaction you did, I just really enjoyed it, it's very interesting. Definitely prefer Tank over all (that bridge is frickin amazing), but O.O is a great track and I can't wait to hear what comes next from them.

I'm not gonna lie as someone who was hype for debut and likes the "wierd and different music" being put out, this one is a bit too different for me. And i said RING x RING was soty lol. idk why but anyways TANK SLAPS (tho it somehow went harder in the teaser edit lol but hey imma stream tank)
It's because RING X RING musically makes sense (it was my soty too) but O.O doesn't (I'm classically trained). Aespa knew how to make it work because even when the genres changed up the keys stayed relative so after a few listens you could sing along and stay in key.
I really wanted to like this song and I just can't aaahh it's no no no I will just leave it at that and wish them all success

I guess we have to agree to disagree on this one. To me O.O sound like a typical teamwork gone wrong project. A bunch of producers had split the song into segments, each worked on their own part and in the end nobody made sure to check, if they actually fit together. Plus I heard the song about 6 times now and I still can't remember it after 2-3 minutes and I'm thankful for this!

I am barely 20 but I grew up with old music and when it comes to Kpop I have listened to 2nd and 3rd gen more. This new concept will prolly take over Kpop in 3 to 4 years but I just can't listen to this song. This song is about them doing their weird song and winning over ppls heart since the last part is like "How that how that" and "O.O" being us amazed or wowed and NMixx being the name for mixing two different parts at the lat part. U know how they sang "NMIXX" in the middle so I believe it's something like first part "AND MIX"(with) second part= third part

i am so mixed (leaning positive) on this song. i know a lot of people like the middle, cutesy part the best but i’m the opposite. the jarring, aggressive parts are pretty unique and i vibe with it so hard.
ultimately, i would’ve preferred this song without the center part. i totally get that the point was to show a different side but it makes the song a little messy.
Their debut song was a little jarring for me, but I’m gonna give it a few listens to see if it’ll grow on me. I definitely prefer tank! The girls seem super talented though, I’ll have to keep my eye out of them

It’s a whole mess. I’m not usually this critical but to be blunt it’s just bad. I’ve listened to it 3 times and it just gets worse.
I comprehend Nmixx kind of theatrical and musical concept when I heard Dice.
As someone who is all for the experimental songs in KPOP (like BI11LIE is literally my ult and Sticker is a bop argue with the wall) this was a hard one to understand. On first listen I was hooked from the beginning but the switch mid way threw me off the song completely, and after a couple days of avoiding the song (on purpose) I sat down and decided to re-listen to it a couple more times and I've come to this conclusion.
The song flows pretty well without the MV, I'm still not 100% on the switch up but I get that the concept is supportive of it. All in all the song is pretty good, and personally I give it a 7/10 I won't actively look for this, but I won't skip if it randomly shuffles in. Tank on the other hand, is not for me unfortunately I dislike the chorus, and even with that godly bridge it wasn't enough to save the song for me (I won't rank Tank because...yeah)

After watching the video, there was a very strange feeling, I like that now many groups are experimenting with sound. I saw their pre-debut videos and I liked everything, the girls are very charismatic and cool. But I didn’t really like the song yet, there were too many strange transitions and I didn’t remember almost anything in the images of the girls in the video. I think I need to listen more, maybe it takes time.

I'm not actually on board the weird and experimental song hype train. Sometimes those songs hit right for me but oftentimes not. With this one I'm kind of sorry it doesn't because I like the middle bright part of the song a lot. I also actually like the instrumentation a lot, even with the switch ups. It just that vocal line and the lyrics. The tone sounds annoying to me and it sounds like they're literally saying "blah blah". The freaky fishy part in Tank has the same issue for me. I hate the topline but I actually love the instrumental. The drums being so heavy and forward but in an almost bigband, theatrical kind of way, is something I think is really unique in kpop, I can't think of an example anyway. I love it and would like more of it. But please no god no not the freaky fishy. It also isn't what I'd think to do with the girls' talent. But you know what, if this is what the people want and enjoy that's fine. There's enough music out there that I do like. It'll be less of a burden on my wallet this way, and perhaps NMIXX will drop something I absolutely adore next time. I also don't like Billlie's ring ring, but snowy night is one of my favorite songs from last year. 11th day as well. So yeah. that.
I wanted to add to this that it's not the switch ups themselves that put me off from O.O it's that I just don't like one of those parts. The vocal/rap line in the opening part is very off-putting for me both in melody and lyrical content. Other then that I'm fine with it.

Seems like I am here the minority. :-) Who actually likes it the way it is. And more than the fishy funny stuff. :-) It sort of sounds like the Loona PTT idea going extremely wild. (The white, or here the colourful, and the dark side... and especially the ending staring part.) It almost looks like they decided to portray another of that "two sides of the coin" story with the O.O "portal" this time. I found it funny. :-) I probably like it because I like both "choruses". :-) And whenever I listen to songs on the go, they all mix into one big flow - sometimes fierce, sometimes slow and dreamy, sometimes joyful. I have no problem with them here mixing it all though they are so opposite and the transitions not what we are used to. I don't mind. I am not an expert, I am not a musician (just basic music education), I look at it from my completely naive listener's perspective. And I enjoy the ride. :-) But please, no fishy fishy. :-))))))

To be completely honest JYP played it too risky for this debut, I personally don’t like it but I don’t hate it, I just think the song is a bit unstructured and has no stable rhythm. It feels like 3 tracks meshed into one. Usually this was similar to Next Lvl, however in that song the transitions are able to mix well creating a fluidity in the song but the O.O transitions are so distinct and aggressive that it can be overwhelming and jarring. However there is no denying these girls are talented, just wished JYP hadn’t wasted their skills on a track like this.

Jinni voice sounds so different from her qualifying video. I thought she had a lower voice. I hate when Jyp force them to sing in that mouse little voice, same way they did to Momo. I hate it, she is gorgeous and my bias though

I tried listening to it again but it's a no for me. The song was confusing and a mess . It would have been much better if they didn't mashed up like three songs into one.
First to second switch was okay but the third one is just unnecessary. They are talented and budget was high, but I dont like the song.

I think any section of this song has the potential to be a banger. That being said, I feel this production is like a chef throwing 10 delicious dishes in one pot and serving me a inedible mess. It’s honestly a little insulting and I feel bad for the girls because their talents deserve better. Also, the song and the video don’t highlight the individual girls. As a debut, it’s such a mistake. 3/10 for me.

tbh, the songS weren't bad but all the songs together in one didn't resonate with how they want it to be. The transitions were not flawless and some of the vocals didn't fit the song. The music video is great tho. It' clear that jype's trying to achieve aespa's next level success but idk if this song will give that to them. I'll wait for nmixx's comeback! Hope they find their own genre that will fit them well.
ALSO, JYPE is apparently claiming that they establish this new "mixing of music genres" type of sound which is EMBARRASSING because SM has been doing it since forever. No wonder the girls got so many comparisons and hate because the company itself is getting bold with false claiming and copying. I feel sorry for the girls.
A lot of people all over social media be it on UA-cam, Tiktok, and Twitter are just shitting on O.O for being experimental. Some of those comments are valid and go into specifics on why they dislike it, but most them are saying that it's straight up trash or the classic "confusing" bandwagon comment. O.O may not be for everyone, but I hope more and more people will be more open minded to what O.O is.
It really reminds me of one of Girl’s Generation’s song. The transition feels the same. I think it is “The Boys” or something like that.
