    Great video. Of course it all depends on how hot it is and how many times you have to pick it up. I have seen it become a vicious circle with the big bikes. You drop it, pick it up, you are winded so you drop it again and so on. Even on smaller bikes we always try to have someone help. Our crew is getting older and backs aren't what they used to be.

    Ha, I was hoping you'd do this after remembering your old video weighing the 1190. All I can say is (as a skinny guy who can deadlift 100kg/225lbs for 5x5 on a good day), lifting my 1190r left me absolutely gasping, and worried I couldn't manage it if she fell in a slightly awkard spot. By contrast when I dropped my T7 for the first time, she was straight up and I didn't even feel out of breath. Game changer if you ride on your own. I actually felt your test goes easy on the 1190 as I think the hard parts were further off the floor during weighing - the effort needed to lift ramps up so quickly in those last few centimetres. That's why the beemer seems so relatively light when actually fallen over, because the pots hold it up - they were very close to the floor on your jackstand weigh machine, meaning you were getting much closer to an actual lift-it-off-floor scenario than with the the parallel / Vtwin bikes.

    Interesting experiment! Some bikes could weigh more but feel less heavy to lift because they carry their weight low (less distance to lift means less work, because w= force*distance). Also, being able to grab a strong hold of the bike minimizes energy leaks, as does the ability to maintain the bike closer to your body while lifting it. I find having a rear luggage rack or grab handles really makes a difference.

    From my point of view, this kind of discussion is absolutely crazy!
    YES! Weight matters! It's the only thing that matters!
    With a light and controllable bike, you won't have to lift that thing day and night, as you simply won't crash that easily!
    200kg plus is not light!
    It hurts to see all these "BMW GSxxxx" videos, where people are talking about "offroading" while going 10-15 km/h on a hardpacked gravel road, crashing the bike constantly and then explaining the right "pick-up technique"......
    For slightly harder terrain, the limit is somewhere around 160kg (mud, big rocky sectios, steep hills).
    There are only 2 bikes that fall into that category: DR 650 SE (discontinued since 2000 in Europe) and KTM 690 Enduro. That's it!
    In Europe, all other bikes were discontinued between 5-15 years ago!
    KLR, WR250/450, DRZ400, TT600, XR650 (never officially sold in Europe).
    Yes, you can go for a Honda CRF300L, but it's really weak.
    If you want to push your bike even further, you need to sacrifice touring capabilities and/or buy a KTM500 EXC.

    • @Nerb1
      @Nerb1  Рік тому

      In one sentence you say that weight is the only thing that matters, then you say a crf300 is weak, then you say a 500 sacrifices touring ability... You cancelled your own arguments.
      In reality, weight does not matter... It is all about the ability of the rider. If all you can handle is a dr650, then just ride that. No one will care, as long as you have fun.
      The T7 is the greatest bike I've ever owned.

    • @inoasdh7618
      @inoasdh7618 Рік тому

      @@Nerb1 Yes, weight matters for how much "fun" riding makes.
      A CRF300 is "quite light", but for me personally, the engine is too soft and weak.
      Had a Beta ALP 4 for some time and did some TET-tours in europe on it. Suspension was too weak, as was the subframe.
      A EXC500 is a beast, reliable, strong, light, but very high. The latter point is one that matters for me, at least as much as weight.
      If the seat is too high, it's sometimes very dodgy in tough terrain! Here, the Beta ALP 4 was great, but the disadvantages were simply not acceptable for my application. :(
      -> So I changed the bike for a DR650 SE.
      It's about the ability of the rider, that's correct! I agree 100%.
      I'm definitely not Pol Tarres.
      I've been driving now for 30 years, all kinds of bikes, onroad, offroad.
      I would say that I don't ride bad, but there is much potential for improvement.
      I struggle with crossing 50cm logs with my DR650, but can do it with a Beta Xtrainer.
      My height is about 1,80m, but even my Xtrainer is lower than stock, because it makes everything so much easier. Getting the front up from standstill and turn 180° on point works well for me, if the bike is low. If it's not, well......
      Got a BMW R1100 GS, too.
      Yes, you can ride "offroad" (gravel roads etc.), but there is simly NO FUN at all in this.
      To toss around such a hefty bike is pointless, again, for me personally. (On the street it drives very well though).
      Again, no offence! This is just my experience and what I like and don't like.

    Wow, never thought about doing such an experiment, well done! But I've also notice something over the years when using an electric weight scale, the weight sensor is normally dedicated to a specific point for its most accuracy. So it is better to use the same point on the scale (maybe centre?) rather than other areas which are too close to the edges, otherwise it can be quite a big tolerance. • @Nerb1
      @Nerb1  3 роки тому +5

      The first 1 foot of your lift is much less weight because the bike weight is being taken by the ground against pegs, crash bars etc.
      I think I will do a video to explain this.

    • @0xsergy
      @0xsergy 3 роки тому

      at least on my bike it kinda 'tripods on the frame, engine case, whatever is sticking out the side so until the tires are touching the ground the lift is super easy, like 20kg tops. once the tires are on the ground is when the fun begins. in soft sand you can also dig out the tire area to make the lift even easier, i've done this on an downhill fall that i had no chance of rotating in the soft sand.

    Don't lift a bike using the handlebars....use the strongest muscles you have...your legs.....place your bum under the seat and push with your legs....that way you will not strain your back.

    • @Nerb1
      @Nerb1  3 роки тому

      Weak muscles from a long leverarm vs strong muscles from a short leverarm. Handlebar with a straight back is my preferred method on an adventure bike which has long handlebars. And, it uses your legs anyway. The backward seat method was borne from bikes with clipons. I find it harder and slower.
      And when someone says "dont", it usually guarantees that I will ;)
