    When i turned 50 I turned to swimming to keep moving after rheumatoid arthritis began to take its toll on my regular weights and martial arts routine. Swimming in ice cold water or the ocean in the winter has improved my health & overall joint pain immensely. Swimming can also be a great zen gateway for learning to meditate as it can focus your breathing when that ice cold burn hits you during the swim.

      Yes! That's so awesome to hear.
      I've become a river rat, and swim in rivers with my under water mp3 player, and just rock out. It's the purest form of meditation I know. I go for hours.
      Keep it going!

    I had basically no visible muscle through middle school, despite being one of the top in my grade for cross country. Then, in 7th grade, I join a winter swimming team with the high school. I knew so little about competitive swimming they basically have to teach me how to swim all over again. I wasn't going too well, and almost quit in the first 4 or so weeks. But then, I started to get the form right on stuff. Then I had rapid, daily improvement. I went from not even being able to do the butterfly to being able to do two laps consecutively in just a week. Needless to say, I go the most improved award, and when I went back to running, everyone immediately brought up how I was kinda jacked, which I hadn't really noticed. Swimming does a lot, so if any of you have spare time in the summer or winter, join a swim team or club. I could deadlift 200 at 13 with no prior attempts, all because of good ol' winter swimming. Though the water was like, 68 degrees F because the water heater was always half broken...

All I can say is that I'm the most fit I've ever been in my life, and If I keep this up there is no reason to slowly degrade as I approach my "older" years. I've never heard of any of these injuries lol. I don't doubt that they exist, but in my 7 or so years of swimming 3-6 times a week to a reasonable level as a kid/teenager I can't think of a single time anybody I swam with ever got injured doing so. The closest I can think of is myself being on and off hurt in the groin area by the breaststroke kick (never serious, it really only impacted me swimming breaststroke and only slightly lol), but then I'm unusually inflexible and I never knew anybody else have this issue. For reference, I once couldn't sit on a quad bike when I was around a friend's house. I wasn't injured in any way at the time, it just had a very wide seat and I couldn't make that angle. I was barely able to play a game of cricket without picking up some sort of minor (or sometimes major) injury, but swimming was "smooth sailing" (sorry 🤣).
    I guess this is why I'm so "veiny". At ~30% BF% I can easily track multiple veins all the way from my hands to my mid chest in any lighting. I never knew. Thanks.
    P.S. Freestyle isn't the name of a stroke. The stroke you were referencing is front crawl. Freestyle simply means "you can use any legal stroke", and obviously everybody swims front crawl.

      There are some pools that use saltwater or ionizers so there isn't a need for chlorine, but they are few and far between unfortunately. I know some people who try to protect themselves from the chlorine with a spray bottle with vitamin c in it, because it neutralizes chlorine it comes into contact with. They spray it on then put an oil like coconut oil on over it. But it's a lot of work.

I was very sedentary as a teenager so it's hard for me to get that hip flexibility but I'm trying to strengthen and increase flexibility in the adductors and hip flexors. I find it very hard to find proper stretching exercises or training programs for treating swimmers' knee or breaststroke knee even though it should be such a common issue, I would appreciate it if anyone can recommend :)

      Exercises that are forcing the muscle to contract while in the lengthened position will be most beneficial for increasing flexibility as well as pain. Exercises like Cossack squats (more of a contraction) and Seated pancakes (more of a stretch) will help improve flexibility in the adductors. Exercises like a trying to go as low as you can in the front splits and holding that position isometrically (more of a contraction), gradually going lower over time, and a couch stretch (more of a stretch) paired together should improve hip flexor flexibility.

    I was just wondering about this. There's these two sisters I know that are both my size or smaller and are both lean and athletic, the smaller and younger of the two quite muscular. Despite their somewhat inconsistent diet, they are really healthy and fast in the water, and have been taking many summers off to swim daily. Last timeI swam with them, the older one wanted to race. Knowing how much experience she had in the water, I reluctantly agreed. Sure enough, we raced and even with me going all out she still won by a second or so.
    Edit: I swam again with her a day ago, and she relayed to me how she was half impressed half irritated that I could keep up with her considering how much work she's put into swim meets and such.

    I will say, the aquatic ape hypothesis is thoroughly debunked, even though humans do coincidentally have the adaptations mentioned here. Also, the dive reflex is present in most/all mammals, not just humans.

      Taken individually, many of these traits can be explained away. All taken together though, it does entice the curiosity. And while I don't outright believe the theory is true, I also don't believe academics claiming it's been debunked. I've lived long enough already to see academics dismiss theories out of hand as quackery, only to eat their words a few decades later. I doubt we will ever know, and it probably doesn't matter anyway. Just entertaining food for thought.

      That's better than a pool too, you don't get the chlorine exposure. Though there are some pools now that use salt or ionizers instead of chlorine. They seem few and far between though.

    The only point to note is that there is no impact with swimming, the body is always supported. Bones adapt and become stronger with the right amount of impact. I believe the same can be said for cyclists. Other than that swimming is perfect. Amazing sketches by the way!

    What about swimming in chlorine?

    • @moversodyssey
      @moversodyssey  Місяць тому +2

      Too much chlorine can be an issue. It can irritate the skin and eyes and can even have an effect on testosterone. Only way around it is to swim in natural bodies of water or in the salt water pools that don't use chlorine.

    • @ryan_54

      @@moversodyssey what about 1 day per week swimming in a chlorine pool? Would this lower testosterone?

    • @moversodyssey
      @moversodyssey  Місяць тому +4

      @@ryan_54 I can't find any research on mild exposure unfortunately. All the research I found was on people using a chlorinated pool 3 times a week or more.
      You can protect yourself to a degree though. Vitamin c neutralizes chlorine. And you can apply oil to the skin as a protective barrier to reduce chlorine absorption.
      The routine would look like this..
      Take a vitamin c supplement just before swimming and spray some vitamin c on your skin (1 teaspoon of powdered vitamin c in a small spray bottle of distilled water works), then apply an oil (coconut oil is a great option) to your skin.
      After swimming be sure to shower off.
      You can check around and see if there are any chlorine free pools in your area. They aren't as common but some pools use salt water and some use water ionizers.
