DUDE i agree. why is everyone hating this song? i think it's my favorite song they've done in years. it's weird and unique and ben's backup vocals are great. not a typical melody line.
David Reme im guilty of not even liking the whole album at first..then after like a 3rd time listening to the whole album..finally got into it..it may just be a different tone to what foo is usually releasing..but this album is a gem in its own right and I love all the songs as each song just feels like a continuation to the next!
David Reme got to listen to it on long road travels! it basically what i think the group embedded to the album with their inspiration of getting different styles from different places..but if you listen to it when your on the road it feels like a soundtrack to the actual travel and it just blows my mind!!
i'm a 65 year old gal who caught the last episode of "Sonic Highways" on TV and I gotta tell ya, I love this song!!!! The lyrics are so great and I can relate to them. I will be sure and follow you guys from now on! Have always loved Seattle and it's vibrant music scene......keep it coming guys!!!! All the best!
This and I Am a River are superb album closers. The whole album is quality. I think Foo Fighters are the greatest rock band for the past quarter of a century.
*Most* UA-cam commentators know nothing about music, only comment by impulse and forget that their personal opinion is not fact. Maybe if you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad, It could be the greatest song in the world and you might not connect to it. This is a fucking amazing song from an amazing album.
Maybe your personal opinion is the one that's a little bias and based more on fanboy love than fact, Maybe you're the one who knows nothing of music. Maybe, Tiago it's time to broaden your musical horizons a little, because this song, and ultimately this album is objectively really....really bad. Amazing? This is so far from amazing it's not even funny...
Tyron Rex opinion is always biased, that's what distinguishes opinion from fact. I didn' say my opinion was fact, but rather that this song isn't really deserving of such negativity. It has classic weird melodies from The Colour And The Shape era. Just because it doesn't convey any emotional connection to you doesn't make it bad. And don't worry my musical horizons cover lots of genres from old school hardcore, punk, metal, classic rock to country, pop, lounge music and electronica. The question is, what did you expect the record to be? Wasting Light 2.0?
I expected well crafted, well thought out, engaging, hook-laiden tracks with insightful, relevant lyrics and original ideas I expected the concept of the band traveling the country, immersing themselves in local scenes and history whilst recording the songs to be reflected in the songwriting and the music. The songs are totally irrelevant to the series other than the fact that he's thrown a few random, out of context quotes into the lyrics and used a guest artist here and there. Also, if you're going to write 6 or 7 minute songs it helps if they're actually engaging, In a poor attempt at clever songwriting Grohl's simply increased the snooze factor and further alienated the listener with static melodies and re-hashed riffs. Lazily written power pop, bundled up in a cheesy gimmick is not a recipe for a great album. We all know Dave can write a great album but he's fucked up majorly on this attempt, it's a shame really.
Well, most of what you expected I could find in this record. I found the hooks, the melodies, the well crafted progressions. Yes, some songs didn't grabbed me immediately, but after careful listening I fell for them. Sure, the songs don't reflect the sound of each city, except maybe for Washington and Seattle, but as they stated, they weren't out to create a country song, a blues song, a psychedelic song, etc... Plus, they also mentioned they had rough versions of these songs before they arrived at each city. From that, I basically expected to learn the history from the TV series and whatever influence the enviroment had on the band to be less recognizable to the listeners. Only they know what the enviroment did for the songs.
The first time I heard this album, this song jumped out at me as the best. Still love hearing this one. Best of You is officially my second favorite FF song behind this one now.
I love the concept of Sonic highways it makes me want to gas my truck up and head off into the desert. This may be my new Dark Side of the Moon. Those with expectations are often disappointed with new things but artists love to travel outside the lines of people pleasing and do what they like. You can hear that beating along these sonic highways.
As much as I love the Foo's, you can never compare Sonic Highways to Dark side of The Moon, DSOM is a once in a lifetime album, that has yet to be re-created IMO. But Sonic Highways is still great :)
Steven Darkknight | Madden 15 and MLB The Show 14 Videos! Um, it would be really boring to recreate dark side of the moon. Grohl and the Foo's have a great idea here!
+Steven Darkknight | Madden 15 and MLB The Show 14 Video No problem brother. Hope your sonic highways are rollin' loud & proud. Only time will tell how this album fares against the best of all time but im digging today. Peace
So far, it seems like the people who dislike this record are all up in arms because they can't have a wank-fest to a typical cookie-cutter Foo Fighters single on this album because there simply isn't one. This album pushes so many boundaries this band has confined themselves within over the last decade, and that alone should be respected and appreciated. Wasting Light started that transition (though it fell flat on its face after the first 5 songs on the album), and this album is just another step in that direction. It takes a lot of courage to redefine a sound that you have had for so long that has brought in so many fans. Kudos to the Foos for having the balls and artistic integrity to make that leap. This is a fantastic album and arguably their most inspired since The Colour and the Shape.
@@Tocaraca After the 5th track on Wasting Light, they fell into autopilot. The songs sounded like songs that would've been left on the cutting room floor during the One by One sessions.
@@7corners Totally disagree. These Days is a fantastic track, perfect balance between restrained verses and explosive choruses. The syncopated groove in the chorus super strong. The drop from the bridge to the final chorus especially is incredible. Back & Forth has a great melody and is overall just fun, although I'd say it is the weakest track on the album. A Matter Of Time is not even close to being "autopilot" material. The groove in the entire thing is exceptional, and just like These Days, the contrast between different parts of the song is stellar. Miss The Misery is the best song on the album (for me anyways). The 6/4 time sig groove is excellent, the guitar solo towards the end is splendid, it's just a great song. I Should Have Known is the most different song on the album, featuring strings and extremely overdriven bass guitar at the climax, which separates it from the rest of their discography. It's nowhere close to being a throwaway track, and is the most standout on the album. Walk is an absolute classic. Out of all of those, Back & Forth is the only song I could come close to calling "cutting room floor" material.
Have to disagree there, it has got the trippiness of soundgarden and the lyrics of nirvana but not the soul of Alice in chains and the sound if pearl jam
Been hooked to this song ever since I first heard it a year back....What an absolute masterpiece! Haunting, painful and soothing at the same time..My favourite song from Foo Fighters..
...having Ben Gibbard on the track as well as an extra ebow player is just adding to the awesome eerie atmosphere of the song...definitely 1 of my favorite song of the album! :)
I grew up in Seattle, this is a wonderful song but it has a sad meaning for me. This song represents my childhood and how everything good in my life is going away. It saddens me that the City that I loved is dying. The area I grew up Woodinvile has been ruined and it really used to be a magical place. This song for me represents my childhood joy turn into bitter Nihilism and Madness.
i read somewhere that Grohl said this album was going to have a different sound, so maybe because of that I came in expecting something new. I don't think this album sounds very different from their past work but I really liked this album. I think it's some of there best work.
NNNNNNNNVVVVVNNNNNN Of course. I especially like how in-tune all the band members are with each other on Something from Nothing. That's probably the result of the seemingly huge production that this album has had. But still, all instruments are the perfect volume at the beginning in relation to each other, and that makes for some great listening.
John Doge "all instruments are the perfect volume at the beginning in relation to each other"...It's called mixing mate. BTW this album sucks donkey dicks!
Rineta LeGal The fact that some people don't enjoy the album means he's doing something right. Great albums don't need to please everyone. You probably expected Wasting Light 2.0. Well, it's not. And I find it a good thing, I was missing some refined melodies from the Foos. This album is a lot wider than Wasting Light.
Don't get me wrong, Dave sounds awesome when he rocks, but I feel that his groovy voice was _made_ for these soft, heartful songs like Subterranean and I Am A River. It just fits so perfectly.
Feels like a love song to younger Dave and just so good. Rediscovering this album slightly older, slightly bruised, slightly more cynical and it just blows my socks of the craftsmanship on this and every song. The transition to a worldly band where reflection and freedom is more apparent. Outstanding. Not to mention, if the Foos ever wrote a Bond theme this is it!
Rineta LeGal Dave Grohl after Nirvana went through hell and back again to where he is now, still a famous and accomplished musician who does not live in the shadow of his past. He was able to move on, make his own music even though some might not enjoy it, Kurt would be fucking proud of him, proud to see that he was able to move on, something he was not able not.
Rineta LeGal Boring shitty pop music ? I agree he has commercialised his music a lot but this is not "Boring shitty pop". I don't care what Kurt's opinion is. If I had to guess I don't think he would enjoy listening to it that much but he might have been proud of Grohl for how far he has come. Personally I haven't enjoyed this album and I didn't buy it, I love the Foo Fighters but this just wasn't them. I hope the next album that Grohl is already preparing ( YES! Hes that good!) will be heavier and a bit more edgy.
I have only become a fan of the Foo Fighters in recent years and for some reason I can't stop playing this song. When I first listened to it I didn't fancy it but now I love it and have played it over and over the past few days. It reminds me of one of their earlier songs but I just can't put my finger on it, can anyone shed some light? Loving outside and in the clear too - still need to watch the rest of Sonic Highways but I have loved every minute of it so far. Way to go Foos!
Absolutely in love with this song. Kurt would be proud. Totally reminiscent of the hell he endured closing the eyes and burying Cobain, a musical genius..yet, Dave started again, subterranean. The truth is so unkind. Miss you Kurt!!
Totally loved Sonic Highways on HBO! Allready a huge fan of Foo Fighters, but learned a huge amount about the music I love even though I'm 53 and have moved from California to Portland, Or. to the South...Living in Memphis now, God knows I'll make it to the concert even though its all the way till next October, and who knows where Ill be (maybe Nashville)! Love love love Subterranian!
Officially my favorite song, fuck the haters, this is music. Beautifully written and means a lot to me as well as I'm sure Dave and the band, great job!
Wow, I heard this song on a Foo Fighters documentary about Sonic Highways last night. Not often a song grabs me, when you are in that timeless moment of sublime music nothing else matters.
"I might think that you love me, but I know damn well you don't.." His band has so much 'personality' and he's clever in writing some words in there that has irony and truth in it, something that sticks in my mind long after the song has ended
And once again, Dave and his band proved they can renew their music, having it to evolve positively. That's one thing which I'll endlessy love the Foo's for, because they stay never the same and their music is like a neverending, unpredictable expedition. They're all about experimenting, fusing and splitting various influences together, while STILL MANTAINING, AT THEIR VERY BOTTOM, THEIR UNIQUE SOUND. I'll be honest, I didn't enjoy this album AS MUCH AS I DID with all their previous ones, but I liked it anyway, and, on the other side, it DID brought some...novelty; and, by the way, sure it'll get better each and every time I'll listen to it. Otherwise, If I liked listening the same riffs over and over again, I'd probably be listening to...ehm...Nickelback.
In my humble opinion this is the best song Foo Fighters have written in years :) reminds me a lot of Nothing Left To Lose album. Sonic Highways is a master piece and Foos should be very proud :)
I have had a lot of operations and sing a Foo Fighters song right before they knock me out. My 2nd spinal fusion I sang this one. I felt like I had been mined! It helped me so much in my recovery. Thanks Foo Fighters!!!!
Great track, easily my favorite off the new album (though I may be a bit biased because I live a few hours from Seattle). Dave clearly mentioned during the HBO companion documentary that his real goal was to reflect each city's musical identity WITHOUT deviating too much from the style that the Foo Fighters have already established (i.e., he didn't want the Nashville track to sound too much like a country song). With that in mind, I think this is a pretty stellar representation of Seattle-- it may not be a straight grunge song like it seems many were hoping it would be, but it's absolutely nailed the sense of introspection and self-doubt which made grunge so massively important and successful. Not only that, but on listening closer to the song after the first few times, I could hear that there were actually references to Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains in the lyrics too. I'm really proud to have this lovely song representing my area of the country.
Definitely my favourite of the album
DUDE i agree. why is everyone hating this song? i think it's my favorite song they've done in years. it's weird and unique and ben's backup vocals are great. not a typical melody line.

Nothing left within, I've been mined
Hell and back again, subterranean
I've been digging in down inside
I will start again, subterranean
But the truth is so unkind
What do you know, how low the sky
Yet the truth is so unkind
What do you know, how low the sky
You might think you know me
I know damn well you don't
Oh no, oh no, you don't
You might think you own me
I know damn well you don't
Oh no, oh no, you don't
Buried my heart, cannot go this alone, oh no
Poison this house, god in the stone
Oh no, you don't
Nothing left within, I've been mined
Hell and back again, subterranean
I've been digging in down inside
I will start again, subterranean
But the truth is so unkind
What do you know, how low the sky
You might think you owe me
I know damn well you don't
Oh no, oh no, you don't
I might think you love me
But I know damn well you don't
Oh no, oh no, you don't
Bring all your lies leave them deep in the dirt
Oh no, you don't
Pull down my eyes
Lay me deep in the earth
Oh no, you don't
Nothing left within, I've been mined
Hell and back again, subterranean
I've been digging in down inside
I will start again, subterranean

Epic Love You All D.G& F.F ill be playing this nonstop..............
Love Seattle/ blue thru in 1980. David.
I love playing this song!!
I love the diversity of this album!
This album sounds like echoes patience & grace. Its an excelent album.
Love this song can't wait to Learn it on guitar!😂😘
This is definitely one of the best songs off the album.
"I might think that you love me, but I know damn well you don't.." His band has so much 'personality' and he's clever in writing some words in there that has irony and truth in it, something that sticks in my mind long after the song has ended
2019 y la sigue rompiendo
I am in love with this song
This and "Outside" are my personal favorites as of now.
This is my favorite song on this fantastic album. I immediately wasn't that impressed, but the more listened, the better it got. Two thumbs up.
great job
I love this song.
meh call me crazy but this imo is the best song on the album..
I see your point, but I think I Am A River is even better.
Great m hi sic. Awsome musicians.
I'm really proud to have this lovely song representing my area of the country.
good road trip music
recently did a road trip and had this playing, so yup yup good road trip song lol
