  • Greg Maddux had a Hall of Fame career in which he won 4 Cy Young Awards, won the ERA title 4 times, and won 18 gold gloves, the most of any player in baseball history. In his 23 year career, Maddux was a finesse pitcher who had immense control. He reached new heights in 1995, and put up a historically great season. His 1.63 ERA is 2nd only to Bob Gibson's 1.12 ERA from the 1968 season (which forced MLB to lower the mound to increase offense). Maddux accomplished many great things that season, but there's one thing in particular that was missing... (watch to find out what that is).

I'm a lifelong Dodger fan of 50+ years but Maddux is my all time favorite pitcher ( thanks TBS ).

Greg Maddux started a painting company, but it folded because he only painted corners.

This is just one of the many reasons why he’s my GOAT at the pitching position. I just love how surgically he dissected batters with his baseball IQ and otherworldly command. The professor indeed.

One correction: Bob Gibson's 1.12 ERA in 1968 is NOT the only qualifying live-ball ERA lower than Maddux's in 1995. Dwight Gooden posted a 1.53 ERA in 276.2 innings in 1985.
On Maddux's struggles against the Rockies in the 1995 NLDS: He started one game in [pre-humidor] Coors Field, which was even more friendly to hitters than it is today, and that was his BETTER start in the series--he allowed 3 runs in 7 innings for a quality start.

Good catch! Somehow missed that one.
I mean take “struggles” for Greg Maddux with a grain of salt but I get what you’re saying. His struggles is still a quality start haha

I followed him his entire career and believed in his prowess in his early days with Cubs. He matured gracefully and admirely...I don't think we'll see another 300 game winner.( signed, a Cleveland Indians fan...sigh)

Greg Maddux opened up his own family themed amusement park. His family doesn't like him though, because he doesn't give out free passes.

Greg could have had 400 wins. So many games his offense took the night off, assuming he'd pitch a shutout.

I remember the offseason before the 1991 season i was telling everyone how the Braves were gonna be good. This was before they had Maddux of course but they had rookie Avery plus Smoltz and Glavine
I was 12 and this was in Southwestern Ohio and most people around here at least didnt believe me cuz the Braves had sucked for so long

One thing you have to mention, he had the biggest strike zone of any pitcher of his time! He constantly got strikes that were 3 to 6 in outside and 3 in inside. You look back on the reruns and you'll see that he was a great player but his numbers were really puffed up because of the strike zone he got.
