- Dale Murphy was the king of 1980s baseball. While that may seem like an outlandish claim to the casual fan, I am here to tell you today that Murphy was one of if not the best player that played his prime throughout the 1980s. His ability to man center field at a gold glove level earned him 5 gold gloves throughout his 18 year big league career. A 7 time all star, 2 time MVP, with a 46.5 career WAR, 398 homers, and 2,111 hits. The dude could flat out ball! His humble nature and leadership presence is what made him an Atlanta icon. The Portland native won over those whom he came into contact with, and was able to be the best player in the league twice over in back to back seasons. As a Braves fan I grew up watching Murphy play centerfield and he had one of the most purest swings I have ever seen. I think it’s a shame that the man isn’t in the hall of fame!
As a Mets fan... I HATED him... How he's not in the hall of fame is beyond me. He was definitely one of the top 10 players of the 1980's.

Dale Murphy was one of the biggest reasons I got into baseball. God knows he was the only enjoyment I had as a Braves fan in the 80's. He deserves to be in the Hall,there's so many ppl in the HOF that didn't have his numbers let alone his leadership.

That's not really true because TBS was broadcast all over the country in the 80s and baseball fans were able to watch the Braves all across the US. I was and am still a Reds fan but I was happy to be able to watch a baseball game every night no matter who was playing. It didn't take long to see that Murphy was a total superstar
I've never been a braves fan .. but I do know the game of baseball and I know that Dale Murphy was a superstar and should be in a Hall of Fame. It's not even a question... Should have been first ballot
After Dale's 1982 MVP, he actually went to work out during some Instructional League games during the off season. I forget who but one of his teammates said "Dale is going to be the first player to win MVP one year and Most Improved Player the next!"

Those 80s brave teams were terrible throughout Dale's career. He only went to one playoff series back in 82 against the Cardinals.
Outstanding video on one of the underrated players of that era. He and Wade Boggs were tearing up the league from 82' to 87'.
He's my favorite athlete of all-time regardless of sport.
Dale Murphy is one of the biggest travesties in terms of living players not elected to the HOF. He belongs in Cooperstown. He has the numbers, is a genuinely wonderful human being, and is an incredible ambassador for the game. It's the kind of player that MLB should be looking to enshrine: a true role model.

Absolutely no other bats in the lineup to help him… even Ozzie Virgil or Bob Horner.
His knee was bone on done with no cartilage. He couldn't plant and generate power. Maybe if he took steroids his upper body power would have been helped. But that's not who Dale was. I'm a Yankee fan from NJ. But thanks to TBS he is all time favorite player.

I still have my Rawlings RBG36 Dale Murphy signed edition baseball glove that I got when I was 11 years old. I idolized Murphy growing up and playing baseball. I miss those days.

Was my favorite offensive player as a kid. Back to back MVPs, was a good catching prospect, moved to center to save his body and won gold gloves and a 30/30 guy.
I still have a Dale Murphy binder with over 500 of his baseball cards. It's a crime he's not in the HoF.

Yea, I remember that 1987 season, as my dad and I would go to Braves games and enjoy Murphy’s talent. If the 1981 strike didn’t happen , he would have hit over 400 home runs and probably would already be in the hall of fame.

When I was a freshman and on the freshman baseball team at Benson high school in Portland in 1974 I was watching Bensons varsity team play Wilson high school at Buckman Field. I saw Dale Murphy hit a monster home run into a parking lot that must’ve been over 400 feet away. I couldn’t believe my eyes! I cannot believe he is not in the baseball Hall of Fame! Something needs to be done about that!

I know this is obscure, but my favorite player growing up was Willie McGee. He was the only player that was almost as skinny as me and the year I really became an obsessive sports fan was 1985. Him and Marcus Allen became my favorite sports stars. Both had injuries mess up their 86 seasons. I still believe that if it wasn't for 86, McGee would have been mentioned among the near-HoF players of the era due to hitting for average, stellar D, and his speed.
Willie McGee was one heck of a ball player. His 1985 in particular is ridiculous! He definitely deserved the award and he had some fierce competition for that honor
@@Cam23 Amen. 1985 is still the favorite year of my life. I went through numerous personal tragedies in 86 as well (PTSD was developed very early), I've always found it odd how well my favorite sports players did paralleled exactly what happened in my life. Life is a weird thing sometimes

I don't really put much stock into the hall of Fame anymore but I know that Dale Murphy and Dave Parker were two of the best players in baseball for awhile in the 80s . I'd bet there are players in the HoF who aren't as good as either of them

He dominated the league for a period of 5 years, so for that, he should be in the hall

@ *Cam* - Great video my friend. I was born in 1971 and Murph was my hero as a young kid and in my teenage years. The GREATEST single moment ever for Murph (IMO) was coming off the bench with stitches in his palm and hitting a Dinger off Doc Gooden. It's my best memory of watching baseball ever.
You highlighted perfectly what I always knew but we didn't have the stats back then like we do now but he got hosed a couple years in voting for MVP. He should of had 3 MVP's at the least. You also have to remember he played on some bad Atlanta teams and had nobody to protect him in the line up and got pitched around constantly.

I always liked following Dale Murphy's progress in the NL top ten home run leaders along with Hank Aaron. With all of his career home runs, Hank never won the NL home run championship, but Dale won it twice!
He is the full reason that Atlanta is my favorite team.
In the best stretch of his career 1982, 83, 84, 85 he played in all 162 games each year on only one good Braves team (1982 lost 3-0 to the Reds in the playoffs).
Unfortunate he was not able to win a ring, but it takes a village to make that happen in a team sport

Thank you for this video. As a Dodgers fan growing up in the 80's we were privy to watching Braves baseball on TBS. I never rooted for them obviously but quickly became a Dale Murphy fan, how could you not? I was actually in attendance in Dodgers stadium when he robbed a HR from Pedro Guerrero in RC field. I remember thinking, dang, I sure wish #3 played for LA. Lol.... Anyway, thank you for the memory lane opportunity. Now do one of these videos of Eric Davis and his prime days in Cincinnati.

It is an absolute travesty that Dale Murphy is not in the Hall of Fame. Murphy carried the Braves during the ‘80’s especially when the Braves were not so good. He never complained, always signed autographs, and never had any clubhouse issues. If Murphy could’ve made a bigger splash in the playoffs. He would be a no brainer. Nobody could beat the Cardinals that year the Braves made it. Throughout the ‘80’s the Braves played against great teams like the Mets, Dodgers, Cardinals, Padres, and even the Astros. Murphy wasn’t an alcoholic, drug user, domestic abuser, or bad with fans. Murphy’s only crime was he played for a Braves team that was constantly in rebuilding mode. I know, I watched those Braves teams. I wish there was something the fans could do to get Murphy in Cooperstown. Murphy deserves to be there.
It's a damn shame that players like: Dale Murphy, Al Oliver and Dave Parker, continues to get overlooked by Cooperstown!
In Murphy's case, the man had a five-year stretch were he totally dominated the opposition in ALL 162 games that he played in.
Now, he may not have had much success in the postseason, but by no means was it Murphy's fault.
I was a Montreal Expos fan at the time, but I always enjoyed watching Dale Murphy play.
As I mentioned earlier, Murphy, Parker and Oliver, all deserve to get in the Hall!

Dude great stuff, for some reason i only could get Cubs games & Mets games in gilbert Az. And since i really started watching baseball in 1987 (after the mets had just won the world series) i was a huge daryl strawberry & doc gooden fan. I think had we gotten braves games too Dale Murphy would have been in contention for my favorite player. Unfortunately for me i didnt have sports center or the internet. And as an 8yr old was only able to form my opinions about baseball teams & players off the two stations that played games i could get and baseball cards where i could read the stats on the back to inform my opinion.

Darryl Strawberry is a guy that I hear about quite frequently in the comments and have had a few suggest him so he's definitely on the short list to get a full length upload in the near future! What hurt Murphy & Mattingly too was the last few years of their careers’ was taken up by injuries as shown by their numbers. It is the unfortunate part that happens to many dominant players of their eras. Maybe Murphy will get in via veterans committee. Also doesn’t help that the Braves were only good from ‘82 & ‘83 (not his fault of course)

The baseball pundits (i.e., knuckleheads) knock Murphy who played 18 seasons for his great 7-year career. Remember Koufax who played 12 seasons and his great 6-year career. They couldn't hold the HOF door wide open enough for Sandy to enter.
You have to overcome a double standard on some levels to get in the Hall of Fame unfortunately. The voters are inconsistent at best
He is close to being a HOF member I would vote for him he never cheated 4 years in row played all 162 games that is a credit to him

I just saw Dale at the PGA Superstore today.
I want her to Murphy’s Hall of Fame. Chances is about the first four or five years of his career. He wasn’t in every day player. The interesting thing to me is if he would’ve stayed a catcher he probably would’ve gotten in already with his stats at that position.

I grew up a Cards fan in the '80s but saw a ton of Braves games on TBS. I'd also watch all the Cubs games on WGN after school. Dale Murphy was a beast. Bigtime power hitter. His production really fell off a cliff fast for some reason. I don't think he's a HOFer but he would have been with a few more good seasons. I remember being upset when my dad told me he was very religious and would never play for the Cardinals because they were owned by Anheuser-Busch.
I Googled "Murphy's Law" and ended up here. More proof that whatever can go wrong will go wrong.
One player I remember who had a great 5 years before falling off was Mike Greenwell. From 87-92 I thought he’d be a hall of famer

A question about the MVP voting of 1984- who were the two relievers who finished above Murphy that year?
I see Bruce Sutter of the Cardinals. He was a reliever. But the only other pitcher above him was Rick Sutcliffe of the Cubs, who won the Cy Young award as a starting pitcher.

Good job on this video, by the way. I always thought that in the eyes of the voters, he needed one more season like he had in 1983 or 1984 in order to make the Hall.
Im not convinced that we should use the mistakes of the past to justify his selection, though. There are a lot of players in the Hall who should not be there. But Murphy has to be considered on his own merit. Given that you could argue that he was the best player in the game from 1982-1987, a case could be made for him.

I will say this over and over again, if Harold Baines is in the HOF, how the F is Dale Murphy not? What can you possibly say about Baines that is better than Murphy? If Dale Murphy put up the numbers he did in the 1980s on a winning team instead of one of the worst teams in baseball, he would be lauded and be in the HOF no issue. The fact he put those numbers up on such a bad team says even more. Dale was a GREAT ballplayer and is HOF worthy if Harold Baines is.
Never has one player made the Hall of Fame lose so much luster than Baines getting in.

It's a shame he didn't have maybe one or two more seasons where he hit 30 HR and around 100 RBI's. And he just fell a couple of homers short of 400 HR for his career. His prime was over after his awesome 1987 season a bit early by his early 30's. It's too bad his batting average dipped so low after that season down to the .220's. He also has no world series appearances. His run with the Braves was great though and I agree with this video. He was the Atlanta Braves during that era and could also run and field too. He is the definition of a borderline HOF case for the Veteran's Committee but I hope he gets in. Class act too. If only his prime lasted a couple of more seasons he likely would have made it to the Hall already.
