Let's check that!
Both StingRays from 1989, Alnico pickup, 4 bolt neck.
-2 EQ StingRay with Rosewood fingerboard
-3 EQ Stingray with Pao Fero fingerboard (born as a fretless for 1989 NAMM)
-Both basses recorded with same Elixir 45-100 Coated strings
-Both basses recorded through same setings on Gallien -Krueger Fusion S head, using DI Post EQ with Tube preamp. Signal then goes to Focusrite 2i2 and then to DAW.
-NO spices of any kind in DAW

Ive always said that the Specials sound closer to the Pre Ernie Ball era 2band StingRays than the pre Special era 3band eq models. Love me some StingRays!!!

I like the beefy sound of the 3 band but I hate messing with mids on my bass. Id rather adjust eq elsewhere.

Agreed, there is really no need for the cut/boost with mid circuit. EB/MM could have just kept all this the same and added the mid for the 5 string along with series/parallel/single switch. 5 string is very different.

I love the tone of a stingray when the bass is cut so much of the classic stingray tone shines then! I’d love a pre like a 78 I have 2 specials and a 04 I’ve probably had 11 stingrays lol the never get old

I don't think this is even a contest. 2 band all the way, always. I don't understand why they even went 3 band, but if you've ever met Sterling Ball, you'll know be's very thick and doesn't listen to what others think.
