JFC Greg is probably one of, if not the best bassist in LA.. Its crazy how he can play any style with ease. Amazing demo.
Wow-humbled,my friend.
Upright is the REAL test, always keeps me humble and striving ⚡️🙏🏽⚡️
Always a pleasure to watch a player play an instrument that is loved.
Greg the Hammer returns!! Love this guy. Big Tony Levin fan here, great to hear him mentioned. Pre Stick Tony is best Tony lol. Godspeed Y'all.
Can't go wrong with Tony Levin. Always a Thumpin Thursday with G.C. (luv the Soundgarden shirt)
Really enjoyed this. The history, the playing, the enthusiasm. I've long heard the original MM basses were highly regarded. Glad I learned more.
Greg is definitely in the groove, beautiful bass, one of my favorites...
Greg! Awesome job! REALLY PUT THAT THROUGH THE PACES! A buddy of mine had that same base brand new back in 77. We loved to hear it growl!
You can't spell Bass without Greg! Great episode.
Greg great to see and hear you again. Your playing and expressions are awesome.
Just gotta be another person saying; Greg Coates is a monster! Good stuff.
Best bass player you guys have had on here - what a slick player - pretty damn nice bass as well
This is an awesome video! Thumperiffic!
Just wow! Nice work Greg .
Greg is simply AWESOME.!!!!
Awwww thanks man!
Truly a pleasure
Amazing job, Greg has really grown into presenting!
So so so long for me to see the Music Man!! Thanks NRG ❤
Awesome bass. And in some unbelievable condition. Love the tone. Hope to one day get my hand on one of those.
Greatest bass ever
Chic bassist: Bernard Edwards, so influential, mostly because a lot of hip-hop “borrowed” things from Chic in the early days. (No electronic samplers, they hired studio guys to play the sections they wanted on repeat for the entire song… not easy (original “Rappers Delight” recording ran about 15 minutes! Imagine playing the same groove perfectly over and over for 15 minutes!)
Exactly-a young Doug Wimbish-another of my favorite players-tracked the bass on that Sugar Hill Gang cut, great that they took the time to record their music rather than loop tape or record vinyl instrumental passages and cut the vocals on top.
Good god this guy is GOOD! His phrasing and voice is absolutely stunning. You can hear a little bit of everybody’s he’s influenced by but he’s made it his own. This guy is on a high level!
I have that bass. Bought it at Normans around 1978
I bought one in April of 1978, a late '77 model, natural with a maple neck and black pick guard and a B005000 serial number. I paid $477.00 for it, a load of money back then, especially when I was only making $2.35/hr as a twenty year old kid. I've played it all these years, yet it's still in about 95% condition, and in fact, only got it's first ding about four years ago. It sounds and plays like butter. A definite keeper!
Amazing sounding bass.
Amazing job Greg!
My pleasure!
I want one of these!
Greg, my man... that was awesome! 👍🏻
Thanks so much Paulo!!!
Truly a pleasure
Master Class
⚡️🙏🏽⚡️
Smokin riffs. Nice job.
great instruments. they were a hit from the moment they were introduced. Good demo showing how the tone controls/active system affects the sound
Wow really nice bass
Best bass I’ve heard. My dream is now to have a vintage stingray. I’ve had a 2000s one and tonally a different universe. Apples and oranges really, all subjective 😊
Great demo Greg!
Very nice
I think this guy knows how to play, but.... :)
Yeah !!! Great playing and knowledge of this example !
Walnut again which i dig plus made in one of the best years of my life.'
GF then Wife. Thank goodness she's still here.
Dream MM bass for me!!!!
One of the biggest regrets of my musical life was selling a 1978 Stingray...in 1980! Ash body, black pickguard. A young, foolish guy. Oh well. Love your playing Greg, my favorite episode yet with your playing!
We have all done it! My 57 LP Jnr. Ug
Thank you so much!!!
Cool bass!
Great bassist👍👍
Nice. I appreciate it
Sounds amazeballs
Greg never fails to impress!
Thanks so much,super inspirational bass
Dreambass!
My introduction to the ‘Ray was Tom Hamilton, who sported one for the recording of the Live Bootleg dates, and I believe for tracks on Draw The Line. I didn’t own my first one until the early 2k’s, when I traded my 4003 for one. They’re such beasts, and a must-have for most bass players…IMHO.
Music man is the best bass for recording!
Badass!
That looks almost identical to my '92 stingray. I love the oval pick guard. I'm amazed the mutes are still on, mine only lasted until about '95 :) Such a wonderful bass to play.
Killer Greg, greetings from Bosnia!
WANT!😍
My boy Greg Oats
Nice🤠
The late, great Bernard Edwards of Chic is who Greg was trying to think of.
Friggen' awesome!
I have owned this very same bass since I bought it used in exc. cond. in 1979 or 1980. I didn't have the money for a new one, and the only used one they had was this ugly brown color. So I traded by 60s Fender JB for it, plus $300. I had previously paid just $300 for the JB, so $600 total investment. It's still a great bass. Just got around to replacing the mutes. Back when it was still possible, I sent MM my original 2 band EQ and traded it for the three band, which moved the jack to the side of the bass. It weighs 11 pounds, more than any of my 5 strings weigh, so due to back problems I don't play it as much as I used to. For over 20 years, it was my only bass.
Bernard Edwards...
May not play Music Man guitars but this video definitely makes me want to! Great work Greg! However! Gotta do a Maton!
Looking at one of these exactly. Wondering what you priced this at?
I think that bass needs a refret after that demo.
No kidding!
I was TRYING to be nice…
Fly
I owned one of these but had to sell because I wasn’t good enough for it!
Awwww man-you deserve one !!!
Thanks Greg love your work on the show!
Wow he's a thumper, I can't remember what band he played in?
I need a bass. No fleas!=)
😆😆😆
Greg Hawkes of the Cars used one.
FLOCK OF SEAGULL PLAYS BASS!
Seems as though u really like this bass.... maybe you should have it
If I had the $$$,it would be mine⚡️🙏🏽⚡️
i think john deacon played one.
Yes!!! He did and I regretfully forgot to include some of his lines in my demo-GREAT bassist
I really enjoyed this video, even though I should not have watched it.. I've already got 3 bass guitars and don't need another one. I should not be tempted by the Stingray.
Apparently, Bernard Edwards may have played that line from "Good Times", but it was written by John Deacon. That's a nugget for everyone convinced John ripped off Chic in the composition of "Another One Bites the Dust".
that is really not true! first came the famous Bass Line played by Bernard in the Chic song "GoodTimes", which was the bass than copied in "Rappers Delight". Here a quote from wikipedia: "History
It is purported that John Deacon's bass line was inspired by "Good Times" by the disco group Chic.[16][17] In an interview with NME, Chic co-founder Bernard Edwards stated, "That Queen record came about because that Queen bass player ... spent some time hanging out with us at our studio."[18]"
Think I've seen Victor Wooten play something similar. And nobody knows more about bass then him.
He typically plays Fodera basses.
that pickguard reminds me of a toilet seat lol
Totally 😆
Jesus get to the playing already 🙄
