  • In this episode I am riding to Oaxaca, in Mexico. On the way, I stumble upon a small motorcycle shop that turns out to have the parts that I have been looking for for weeks and weeks in El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico. I cannot believe they have EVERYTHING!

That's something I learnt here in Germany: The big flashy shops are run by people with degrees in Business Administration. Some part has been sitting in a shelf for a year? "We can use the space for stuff that sells better. Get rid of it!" The small and run down looking shops are run by mechanics and enthusiasts or just got handed down from the parents. MBA? What spare is that?
-They will have all the stuff you need, and then some in the darker corners of their basement storage.
And I could have done with a disclaimer: Do not watch this episode if hungry! Am off to the kitchen, it won't be a pretty sight!
Lovely countryside, lovely episode! Mucho enjoyed! 😍🤗

You'll be geared down just a bit, but not much. The tire height being a bit taller will split the difference a bit. You may find it being geared a bit lower may be better in tight offroad situations. I've been the owner of a small bike shop for many years and those folks really rolled out the red carpet! The little motorcycle shop that appears from out of nowhere was not an accident.
It had been waiting for Noraly to ride by!
That's great that they had everything you needed. It doesn't matter that the tires don't match, or that the chain and sprocket weren't exactly OEM parts. What does matter is that you are safer now by having them. You never know when you may not have opportunities like that while traveling the remote area's between the larger cities and villages.
The food looked amazing, but I think I'll have to agree with you that the Grasshoppers will not be on my menu! 😂

I am truly thankful for all these journeys you bring us along on. We can't fully express how much we appreciate all that you do, but believe me we are thankful for all the hard work that we see, and just as much for all the hard work (did someone say editing videos...) that we don't see. You are an amazing piece of woman, Noraly! Never forget that.
The +5% change in the number of teeth on the back sprocket should lead to a bit better acceleration for you and a bit lower top speed - and I think that trade will be beneficial to you and the style of riding you do. The slightly more aggressive tyre pattern should also be good if you intend to continue finding "roads" instead of roads.

With that rear sprocket not fitting exactly original make sure bolts are staying tight visually and you can also give it a kick in the morning before packing up . You will see and feel it's loose with a kick. After a few days if still tight it should stay tight.

I understand the limitations of finding parts. Along with a more aggressive tire set-up....Your riding style would benefit with a larger rear sprocket. Better bottom end to put the power down in climbs, water crossings, more torque in the lower gears..etc.

I would disagree with the sprocket change. I have 2500 miles on my Rally and the 1st gear is way granny, and 6th is overdrive. She would loose the benefit of top speed which on mine is around 80 MPH. She's coming to the states and if she rides on I5 in California or any other highway in the west you need some speed. I was on I5 in Oregon for an hour yesterday heading north coming back from forest roads heading north and needed the gearing that came with it.

And the 42 will help off-set the tire height gearing change effect. She likely won't notice any difference on the highway but will in the dirt. Tall tire rides on top of the pavement while the tread sinks into softer ground. Kinda changes "gearing" effect?

First thing I did on my 250L was to replace the stock 14/40 with 13/42. Best decision that I ever made!
I like the lower achievable speed for the real technical challenges, more acceleration is always a good thing, and still tops out near 80 mph.
