Tom wrote the song and gave it to Stevie for her debut solo album. They recorded it as a duet. She also did Leather & Lace on same album with Don Henley of the Eagles.
@@eriklarson9137 there’s a great 4 part doc called The Defiant Ones about Iovine and Dr Dre. But Tom and Mike Campbell wrote the song, Tom decided to do it as a duet with Stevie, and Tom's band the Heartbreakers are the band. Stevie had nothing to do with the song other than singing on it.
I don't think he was being totally serious. Maybe just how it popped up on UA-cam. And as he says himself, he is still growing his knowledge about music he may have missed.
@@garyking6519 That isn't what happened. Tom Petty wrote and recorded the song. His producer Jimmy Iovine, who was working on both Stevie and Tom's records at the time, wasn't going to use it on Tom's album. Iovine felt the song came from a female point of view. He brought in Stevie to sing on it, and that version was added to her solo album. This performance of the song in the studio was used as the promotional video for MTV. Like people say, Taylor Swift writes and sings songs about her exes, but Stevie makes them perform it while she stares at them. Mainly to Lindsay. Watch Silver Springs, she calls him OUT! 😂
You're making it sound like Nicks and Petty had a "thing" at one point... Not that we know of and Stevie claims never had those type of feelings for Tom despite being so close. She may have been a little twisted by dating TWO members each, of TWO supergroups... Lindsay and Mick Fleetwood, from her own band, as well as Don Henley and Joe Walsh from the Eagles. This was going to be on Tom's album but he loved Stevie's performance so much he did not record it and the song went to her for her epic Bella Donna album.
Stevie had a good solo career, but not an iconic or groundbreaking solo career. I don't think she deserved to be inducted as a solo artist, her Fleetwood Mac induction was enough. And to think she was the first woman for both is ridiculous.

Stevie is singing with Petty's band, The Heartbreakers. Petty's guitarist, Mike Campbell, wrote the song, as I understand it, they gave it to Stevie. She and Petty were friends forever. They called Stevie an honorary Heartbreaker. She showed up at a few of their shows and would perform a few songs with them. Another song she sang with them is, I Need to Know. Every one of the Heartbreakers is a top tier musician. I've seen Petty take a break and let the Heartbreakers just perform, and been totally entertained.
I believe she wrote a lot of lyrics. Reactors don't play or get into pre nicks/buckingham Fleetwood Mac. Some great music and McVey was a part of some of that.
It's Pettys song. He shared it with Stevie. They have other songs together. After FM she became an honorary member of the Heartbreakers. She and Tom were great friends
You should do Tom Petty " Don't come around here no more". That was written when Stevie was breaking up with Joe Walsh from the Eagles. He showed up at the studio where Stevie was working with Tom and the Heartbreakers. She told Joe Walsh, " don't come around here no more'. And the rest became a TP hit
I saw Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers at Hyde Park in London, about 3 months before he passed away in 2017. Stevie Nicks supported them that day and came on stage to perform this during The Heartbreaker’s set and it was a real goosebump moment, having loved the song for over 30 years. I’m still gutted Petty is gone
That riff is to die for. This is just a great song! Hard to beat these two ...great duet! Tom wrote the words and Mike Campbell(guitar) the music. Stevie wanted Tom to write a song for her.
9:56 Speaking of her eyes and that ‘look’, you really should check out Silver Springs from The Dance concert with Fleetwood Mac. Her eyes are shooting daggers at Lindsey as she sings. 🎶🎵“You’ll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you”🎶🎵 Best break up song, ever. ❤🤘🏼🤘🏼
This is more than a duet, it's Stevie singing a Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers song. I loved this song since it come out. It was so popular that it really overshadowed just about everything on Tom's album Hard Promises. They did a duet on it so check out Insider from that album.
This is one of those songs that literally takes you back in time!!! You remember what's going, you can still smell the things around you, you just feel everything around you!!! It's a song that has stood the test of time!!

Stevie wanted to join The Heartbreakers but Tom said The Heartbreakers are all guys. She was at 3 of the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers concerts I attended. Amazing to see the 2 singing together live.
Stevie rep’d and shouted out Tom Petty for being something the world needs more of in their time. They probably had a great working relationship and friendship. What a time to be alive.
Stevie Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975. Tom Petty released his first album in 1976. Both were well established by the time this song was released in 1981. Many singers perform duo's together to attract a larger fan base.
RIP Tom Petty. I had the chance to see him a few years ago but couldn't afford concerts at the time (for quite a few years, actually), and then he passed away. Now I'm in a much better place financially and I'm taking every opportunity to see all the artists I want. In the last 3 years, we've been to a ton of great shows - and next Friday I'm seeing Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks!
Wish I could have seen Tom Petty live! I was an adolescent in the 80’s, loved Tom Petty’s music since I was a little kid. Watched his videos on mtv, listened to him on the radio and bought his cassette tapes to listen to in my home stereo and Walkman. Tom Petty is one of a kind, an extreme talent.
This is actually where 'Edge of 17' came from. Stevie Nicks was talking to Tom Petty's wife during the session and Tom's wife said sometimes he acts the 'Age of 17'. Tom and his wife were from the south east US and had pronounced southern accents. Stevie was from California. She AGE as EDGE and thus a hot was born.
I was born in '53 and am thankful for the era I grew up in. I've basically been able to see and hear it all, right up to present day. Stevie Nick's, who thankfully I got to see perform back in the '80's and Fleetwood Mac are definitely in my top ten favorites.
I love seeing the surprised look on your face at these oldies!!!!! Thank you! I'm 71 so I was there when this music was made and it's so great to see young people enjoy and verify how great this music is/was!
There was a point that in Stevie's career that she wanted to be in the Heartbreakers. Tom told her no women in the Heartbreakers. But they did make her an honorary member. Tom was already a beast by the time this song was made.
Yes, this is a duet from Stevie's album Bella Donna which "Edge of Seventeen" is also from. This is Tom Petty's band "The Heartbreakers" and this song was written by Tom Petty and Mike Campbell, the Guitarist here. Stevie Nicks also had a duet with Don Henley, from the "Eagles" with "Leather and Lace" from this same album.
My girl crush growing up. So lucky to see Fleetwood Mac live in the early 90s and they didn't miss a beat. Stevie was just as gorgeous as ever ❤ Leather and lace by Stevie is amazing too. Peace out ✌️ ☮️
Here ya go! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Stevie also did an excellent combo with Don Henley on “leather and lace” Lol I didn’t even notice that Tom‘s name wasn’t in the title. They just go together. Oh wait that’s Grease
I saw Stevie here in Maine in 2022. She was amazing. She did a wonderful tribute to Tom with photos of him/ them on the screen behind her. ❤️. She also did a tribute to Prince as well.
Stevie is the lead singer for Fleetwood Mac. This is actually Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Mike Campbell on lead guitar, keyboardist Benmont Tench, drummer Stan Lynch and bassist Ron Blair.
Happy Father's Day!!! My guy Tom with my girl Stevie. Perfect duo! Please do more Tom Petty: "Breakdown", "Mary Jane's Last Dance", "Don't Come Around Here No More", and too many more to mention.

Written by the late Tom Petty and Mike Campbell. Great duet. Stevie Nicks and the late Prince wrote a song. Tom Petty was also in The Traveling Wilburys. Suggested video 📹: 1 Stevie Nicks and the late Prince perform Stand Back 2 Fleetwood Mac performs Little Lies 4 Littke Big Town and Keith Urban cover The Chain 5 Tom Petty sings I Won't Back Down. 6 The Traveling Wilburys perform Handle with Care.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers became an immediate seminal "new wave" rock and roll band (they actually were more like The Byrds 2.0) in 1978-79 with their first few albums. By this time they were one of the most popular bands in America. They have a TON of iconic hits.
Hey BP - I think it's easy to forget from this side that even though you have done so much, there are always significant artist holes, simply because you didn't live through it. People assume things just because you have done so much listening work around this same time.
Well, here is one viewer that knows you were learning. And it is wonderful to see your reactions to my music when I was young. I think your reactions are great regardless of what anybody else says. Keep doing what you’re doing.
Stevie was a prolific songwriter but Fleetwood didn't have room for another songwriter when her and Lindsey came on board. The way that that group reacted to her writing songs is what FORCED her to not only have a great career with them, but also a HUGE solo career as well! She's the closest thing to a musical machine that you will ever find in human form!
YES, Stevies has a very successful solo career (in fact is the most successful from Fleetwood Mac)! If you really want to see Stevie stare down someone then check out “Silver Springs” (live) from “The Dance” concert tour in 1997 (was in the audiance at MSG for this stellar tour)! Tom wrote this song with Stevie in mind to perform the duo, it was released on her first solo album (same one that “Edge of Seventeen” appeared on), “Bella Donna” in 1981. Another hit duo from this album, "Leather and Lace" features Don Henley of The Eagles. It was a very successful solo album for Stevie and reached number 1 on Billboard. Stevie wrote “Dreams” and sings lead! Next song from Stevie should be “Rooms on Fire”.
When I was younger(mid-70's forward) I had blonde straight hair and wore it like Tom here. And I also has some girlfriends that looked very similar to what Stevie looks like here. Man those days were heavenly.....didn't realize at the time how truly wonderful I had it. Had no problem attracting some very very beautiful ladies.....they swooned for me......true story. These classic songs bring back all of those wonderful times to memory......thanks for memories.
Try Stevie Nicks with Don Henley from the Eagles. Their song Leather and Lace is awesome! The official video doesn't have him in it though, just backup singers. Have a great Daddy's Day!
I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live at least a half dozen times, maybe 8, including his last tour (RIP TOM). On one of his tours, he actually had Stevie come out and sing a few songs, including this iconic duet with Tom + Heartbreakers, and it was so cool to see it live, rather than just a video (the concert was years after this early 80s video). She had put on a few pounds, but still had that sultry smoky voice. A great memory!
You're absolutely right about Stevie's sexy "f me" bedroom eyes. Especially in this video where she turns to Petty and stares at him with those gorgeous brown smokey eyes. Heart melting. Needless to say, this was a HUGE MTV VIDEO HIT.
Tom Petty had a lifetime friendship with Stevie Nicks and would have her join his band on some of their tours over the years and just come out and sing this and a couple other songs either him during the show. Tom would always introduce her as the band’s little sister ❤I was lucky enough to see her perform at a Tom Petty concert in St.Louis in 2006 and it was amazing 🔥
Stand Back is a Stevie Nicks Song inspired by the beat from Prince's Little Red Corvette and yes Stevie Nicks is the Queen of Rock and Roll , she is a prolific song writer and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice and The Writers Hall of Fame .
Yeah everyone at the time knew this as Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty and the heartbreakers...Tom made her an honorary heartbreaker after this duet.If you want to see Stevie at her prime as a solo artist you can't go past 'I can't wait' and 'stand back' but she has a huge catalogue of hits from her solo career.
Tom loved her so much ! He made her a honorary member of the Heartbreakers!!! R.i.P. Tom!!!
And Stevie was often seen and heard as a backup singer at Tom's concerts.
Tom wrote the song and gave it to Stevie for her debut solo album. They recorded it as a duet. She also did Leather & Lace on same album with Don Henley of the Eagles.
He gave it up begrudgingly. But, iovine was right when he told him the song with Stevie will buy Tom a house.

If it makes you feel better I just enjoy how much you emphasize the unifying power of music.
She had a amazing solo history. Stevie's greatest hits and think sold a lot of copies and a great album.
Pegasus it's a beautiful thing to watch you wake up and smile into the light. The 70's and 80's and 90's were freedom.
This is the DEFINITION of 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers became an immediate seminal "new wave" rock and roll band (they actually were more like The Byrds 2.0) in 1978-79 with their first few albums. By this time they were one of the most popular bands in America. They have a TON of iconic hits.
Hey BP - I think it's easy to forget from this side that even though you have done so much, there are always significant artist holes, simply because you didn't live through it. People assume things just because you have done so much listening work around this same time.
Stevie was badass.
80s had some of the best duets.
I love Stevie and Tom! Both are two of my top fav singer songwriter performers. Great talent there and this was such a great duet!!
Fell in love with Stevie when I was 11 and Tom is an American icon. Thank you!
So excited you did this one. Best duet of all time
Classic rock at its finest
Huge hit on MTV during the early years when it was all about the music. Thank you for reacting to this. Hadn't seen it in a long time.
He made her an honorary Heartbreaker.
Well, here is one viewer that knows you were learning. And it is wonderful to see your reactions to my music when I was young. I think your reactions are great regardless of what anybody else says. Keep doing what you’re doing.
How awesome to be able to do a duet with the Gypsy Queen singing your song. She is so beautiful in this video.
I LOVE THIS JAM SINCE THE EARLY MTV DAYS, EARLY 80'S ....PURE MAGIC !
🌸 I've seen interviews with Stevie and they were really good friends, her and Tom Petty ....
Stevie is my girl ...love this duet..and for 75 yrs.she has not changed one bit ....
Yes!!! I love this song! I recommend this one, and her song Leather and Lace with Don Henley in ur last reaction! Please do that one next! 🙏
Stevie Nicks and Don Henley, "Leather And Lace", another great song!
She's Stevie Nicks! She had a huge everything career.
You check out this “ Live” performance of this song soon. ua-cam.com/video/IXphsh6bqL8/v-deo.htmlsi=lEnpZZXVEJ8F2sgc
Happy Fathers Day
First heard Tom Petty when I was about 13 yrs and have been a fan to this day. (I'm pushing 59 yrs)
I've been waiting for this one!
I've always thought of this as a Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers song featuring Stevie Nicks.
That’s coz it has their sound
My wifes favorite singer is Stevie nicks and loves her clothes and wears stuff like her ❤
Insider with Stevie and Tom doesn’t get enough love. Another incredible song with them.
You need to listen to Christine Mcvee singing songbird a truly beautiful song
Stand Back is a Stevie Nicks Song inspired by the beat from Prince's Little Red Corvette and yes Stevie Nicks is the Queen of Rock and Roll , she is a prolific song writer and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice and The Writers Hall of Fame .
Dont come around here no more is a must listen
The music video is a trip too 😂😂 I love it RIP Tom
I just saw her in concert in March and she talked about her friendship with Tom Petty.
Happy Father's Day !!
Sometimes They just enjoy singing together ❤️
Now you need to do Stevie doing Leather and Lace with Don Henley (Eagles Drummer/Singer)
